Chicago resident here. I’ll break it down. Housing projects (overpopulated) were destroyed, causing opposing gang members to relocate and live on the same block. The city thought cutting the head off the snake would kill it, but they were wrong. They locked up gang leaders, which eventually killed any type of gang structure. Gangs always had codes. It used to be gangs vs gangs, but now its a free-for-all with no structure. There’s a bunch of kids with mental health issues running around and avenging their friends. An old friend I played baseball with was gunned down this summer. He was not gang affiliated and he just had a daughter. The south side doesnt even have a trauma center. City policy combined with a lack of resources helped fuel the situation. Edit: This is a multifaceted issue. There is not just 1 cause or just 1 solution. Nitpicking as if only music, black culture, etc are the problem is purposely missing the point because of subconscious prejudices. Redlining was a city practice that literally created these neighborhoods. The majority of shootings are gang related and to provide a solution, you have to understand gang culture. The people in the communities do share the blame to a certain extent too. However this is a nation of individuals, so law-abiding, low income black people have literally nothing to do with black criminals who are strangers. Stop putting them all in one box and trying to make them accountable for strangers who happen to be black too. A lot of people under the comments are using this as an opportunity to flaunt their racism instead of talking about city policy. Anthrax is poisonous no matter who ingests it, therefore it causes poison. Fatherless households produced a president and many other successful people. So to use that as an excuse for a multifaceted issue is not accurate. Same applies with music. At least be intellectually honest and have a legitimate point to make if you disagree. Criminals will be criminals, but the local and national government has an obligation to do right by EVERY citizen.
T E I don’t understand what you’re responding to. Are you under the assumption that I live in a bad neighborhood because I cited reasons for crime? I don’t , btw. Most people who reside in bad neighborhoods typically don’t have the money to move. Running away and moving doesn’t solve or address the problem of bad policies and a lack of resources. Its clear by your bootstrap mentality that you came to project something, which resulted in your strawman argument.
ought to have more police. and support your police. when some gang member is trying to rob a store, and gets slammed and clocked by the one time, don't rally about it, praise it and tell each other, you play stupid games you'll win stupid prizes. report crime when you see it, don't say well bobby is a good dude, so fuck it if he sells crack or robs homes. it's really simple, it's honestly the community that makes the difference. last tip, support legal, law abiding citizen gun ownership, and support stand your ground laws. someone breaks into your home, you blow a cavity in his chest, open and shut case. the end. sincerely, a person in small-town Texas who hopes yall can get well.
Straw buyer: "a person who buys something on behalf of another person in order to circumvent legal restrictions or enable fraud." These are people with clean (or clean enough) police records to purchase firearms for resale on the black market. If the police later trace the gun back to them, they just claim it was lost or stolen and there's very little anyone can do about it. Most teenagers on the South Side of Chicago know someone who knows someone who will sell them a gun, no questions asked, in a matter of hours.
Unless the city has closed borders and police enforcing checkpoints, I don't see how just a city-wide law would be all that effective when a place with lax gun laws is an hour's drive away and the demand for guns is so high.
The new standards of parenting teach young parents to let the kids be themselves . the problem is kids dont know better, another problem is 7 out of 10 marriages end up in divorce so 3 out of 5 kids have only one parent . gentrification, corporate sponsored policing nd encarceration are big contributors.
Focus on just parenting. Education is only beneficial for landing a job. Unless you you're reading the scriptures learning about morals and principles that will help you through out life.....
Tell that to the one’s who abandon their family!! Not all single parenthood is women chasing away men, there are abusive, narcissistic cowards out there. Women abandon their children far less and will struggle to care for them.
When a kid grows up and probably doesn't have a dad, then is put in the system (jail) more than likely for bullshit and now has a record, has no education because of lack of funding for public schools plus the fact that teachers are grossly underpaid and have no motivation to teach, then the kid grows up and is uneducated, limited in the jobs he can get and is emasculated at home because he can't financially take care of his family he is going to leave! A man doesn't really feel like a man if he can't provide for his family. Plus the fact that women who receive section 8 housing by law can't have a man living with them completely KILLS any chance of the family to ever build on the little they have and actually try to get ahead
That's sad. It should be alarming and would be in any other country. Some say it's racist that it would be a bigger deal in another country but that's not true. In other communities people don't accept ghetto lifestyle but the black community does. They need to start cleaning up their own backyards because their problems are their own. White people don't do this shit so let's stop pretending any of this is on us.
I live in Logan Square which is a pretty nice area and I'll tell you for a fact that the majority of gun violence is never even investigated. The other day I heard about 15 shots in a row and there where cops driving around afterward but I couldn't find it a police report or anything on the news.

When he talks about PTSD in the ghettos it reminds me of a conversation I had with an old friend recently. I grew up in shithole areas of LA in the early 80s-90s. Lotta places, gangs were huge, pretty bad scene. I was always afraid of getting shot in a drive-by, whenever a car was coming up behind me, at night mostly, I'd start to panic and my blood would rush thinking I could get shot. Always gave me anxiety, a lot of people were dying around me as I grew up as a result of those types of shootings. I reconnected with an old friend after 20+ years that still lives there, I was telling him about how I still get that panic and anxiety whenever a car drives up behind me as I'm walking. He told me I had some kind of PTSD from the bad areas we grew up in, I'd never thought about it that way. I thought I just had an irrational fear now since it's extremely unlikely to happen anymore, especially given the area I live in now. Just can't really shake the thought.
Exactly it’s so sad that we have to deal with fear of even walking the streets. That’s why my family and I moved. After a drive by we survived we knew it was time to go. But some people don’t have the opportunity to go somewhere else and have a constant fear and are paranoid of many things a regular person shouldn’t have to worry about. So when they leave their old life they are still haunted by the things they feared before.

They’re right about Chicago being segregated. The news makes it seem like the city as a whole is a war zone, but I’ve lived on the Northside since 2003 and I’ve never felt unsafe no matter what time of day or night. It really is like two different cities sharing the same name.
Yup, certain cultures just have zero accountability and blame all the problems on everyone else. They take no responsibility for destroying their own neighborhoods. They glorify violence and drug dealing. They don’t pursue education, have a lack of work ethic and the parents don’t teach their kids right from wrong. Do you see how they treat dogs or other pets? Not all, but most of them are terrible people. Truth hurts.
That's how St Louis is too. The city gets a horrible reputation. But it is extremely divided. During the great depression, the predominantly afro american areas on the northside suffered the most from high unemployment etc. In a way, the city inflicted this damage on their own communities. Delmar road formed a rough "boundary" between the black neighborhoods and the high-class white areas, places like Clayton and Central West End. Places just a mile or two away that happened to be some of the most desirable neighborhoods to live in in the US at the time. By the time you got to the 1950s and 60s, this divide was almost irreparable and the entire Northside of St Louis has pretty much become an entire wasteland.
I love this guy. I live in Chicago now and we really need more help. Send in the national guard. But this guy nailed it that the biggest privilege children can have is two parents in the house to raise and support the kids.

PTSD is real on the rez too.... lol and I agree, I've never been to Chicago but we had to get off of the rez. Watched my mama die in front of us, I had extended family and our tribe but I wanted better for me and my sister. So I got married at 17 to a Marine, he let my sister and cousin come with me. He finished his tours while we stayed in Navy Housing while finishing school, then he packed all of us up, moved to Alabama, provided for us and loved us. Community here is amazing. He is white as could be but no one ever gave us shame. Ever. So...because of this young, southern, white bullet catcher who fell in love with a poor native girl and never once complained about us. His family is amazing and eventually, in all...we got over 12 of my family members down here, finished highschool and 7 of us finished college (so far). My man was voted in as a citizen of the Quileute so now we can foster WA natives (well most natives) now that aren't my family. This little town down here deserves an award for it too. Im from Chicago, and I need to point out a few things. First, the segregation today is mostly black and white. Historically, it was an immigrant city, and the white populations were also very segregated. There are not many cities large enough to boast a Bulgarian neighborhood, a Ukrainian neighborhood, etc. Those borders have faded over time, while the black/white/Hispanic divisions have not; but the European, Indian, and Asian restaurants and cultural hallmarks remain. Second, there are a lot of black professionals in the city, and every one I know moves to a rich, black neighborhood by choice. The city is large enough to support wealthy-black neighborhoods. Obama lived in one, Hyde Park on the near south side. Finally, it is a misconception that black neighborhoods are only on the South side, like there is a clear divide. Or, that the division is between poor black and rich white, as there are a lot of poor white neighborhoods as well.
Hyde Park is not a rich black neighborhood. it's been mixed since forever. Please, start listing off the "poor" white neighborhoods in Chicago. This will be the shortest list ever.
No such thing as a poor white neighborhood in Chicago. There are some lower-middle class white pockets in the city, but not poor. And Hyde Park is mixed. Lots of U of C professors , doctors, etc.
I met a guy from the bad places of Detroit while in the Army, we were sent to Germany after basic. After a year there he said he will never come back to the states. 20 years have passed, he still there and loving it.
Everything change, now it’s mostly white with a lot of new luxury apartments. I know cause I’m a union painter and I worked in Cabrini Green. Where the high rises once stood are now empty fields. Kinda get chills knowing how bad things were back then when you walk thur there.
As of the moment we have 1900 ppl shot and survived as of this year. 422 people murdered this year (not just with guns), which is pretty low compared to the past years, but yeah it's pretty bad still.
Fairly new to Joes podcast, but as a person who has lived in Chicago my whole life what happens in Chicago the news cant even fathom how it is to live here you leave the house not knowing if your going to return home. Chicago breeds soldiers and you HAVE to have the heart as one to survive.
July 4th right around the corner, but we wont be hearing anything about what happens on the news. In the GTA they report on all of it; from assaults to stabbings and shootings. The climate is intense, every time I watch the news theres death after death, pointlessly. Even in Canada, shootings (of course not on such a large scale) happen constantly. And I dont even know how we change it.
"Fixing the problem starts with education" I agree. Your earliest education starts at home with your first two teachers, your mother and father. Your mother teaches compassion and your father teaches respect. Thanks to the war on drugs and an inflated welfare program you have fathers in jail for possession and mothers having as many kids as possible to milk the govt. Decriminalize possession of small amounts of drugs(hefty fine may work), roll back welfare for new single mothers to two children max and zero dependent claim on taxes if on govt assistance (everyone, not just black moms), existing single mothers will continue getting their checks but will have to pay it back in taxes once the kids reach 18, sterilize repeat violent criminals, and encourage community activities and organizations dedicated to uniting people rather than just sucking up govt money and keeping communities divided.
@@crragg1022 even if you are correct, 4.5 is just embarrassing. The government really needs to intervene and start setting up youth programs. I live in the U.K. and the murder rate is 1.2 and that’s pretty average when compared to other 1st world countries besides the US.

It's not really segregation. So we have an assload of different communities. So if you're the average Hispanic or Asian coming to live in Chicago you want to live around a community that you can relate to and understand. And most people tend to live in the corner where they grew up.
You can tell he touches on all the things he’s been trained to believe: It’s happening because it’s segregated. No one cares because we’re black. If it happened, even a little, to white people they would air lift them out of here. But as the conversation goes on he gets to what he knows to be true in his head and heart: Education is important. Having a father/positive role model in the home. Community policing in combination with effective policing. That’s what needs to happen but the leadership of the left has conditioned the people who live in these areas to react to these solutions by saying they’re racists. I live in a major city that used to be rot with crime, of the gang and various types. What happened was the people of this city had enough and open themselves up to each other and to policing solutions and now the city as a whole is safer and more connected than ever. It didn’t happen overnight but now it’s a very safe place for anyone to live and that didn’t happen by accident.
That's it, that's the solution. Getting the people motivated to change it, getting them to see that there is another way. Repairing the family structure starting with parenthood, creating clever alternatives to crime, making life more enjoyable with more amenities, and so on. If you work family by family, block by block, giving people a better option and forgiving them for minor crimes if they commit to a better life, it will RAPIDLY change for the better. A gently guiding hand works best. Too much government is what created that mess.

The violence is getting out of control in London as well, the problem is the glorification of violence and gangs throughout our youth - social media is probably driving this. I grew up in probably the most deprived area in East London and the education wasn't great, but I moved up north to Chesterfield in my teens and it wasn't much better there either, and knowing the levels of education around a lot of the working / middle class areas in the rest of the country I can't say they have it much easier. But if a kid from Chesterfield stepped out of line, then they would be singled out, the East End used to be like this and everyone respected the rules. But now it's crazy, kids are untouchable as well, no one is allowed to say anything to them even if they are being twats. I hear young adults in London say all the time in the news (such has Stormzy who was able to get a good education and higher education) 'it's so tough living in London, it's rough', and yes it can be, but also there is far more opportunity in London and far more work. There is also loads to do, football teams, boxing gyms and youth clubs are dotted about everywhere, but kids now are driven towards violence and crime as the glorification of being a 'big man' and a 'somebody' is putting pressure on them. Another issue is that the older local generation who made all the rules before have moved out and sold up for a better life in the country, and to make some money. So there's no one really guiding these kids and to tell them what's right or wrong, we all must step up and help guide these kids down a better path.

None of my white mates who are less educated than me have been unemployed as long. Britain does a better job of hiding its racism than America, but it is still there. Knife crime is only in part due to culture, it is also down the environment. Jobs, Opportunities, Unfair policing, unfair criminal justice system and even public service provision. I always joke that if race wasnt a factor in London, why is it poor whites are always housed in the better parts of town like Angel Islington or even fucking Primrose Hill? Whereas blacks and Asians are housed in shittier parts of town? Its not an accident its by design.. Even the reaction to knife crime is so different in multi racial London compared to Glasgow which used to be the knife crime capital of Europe. Glasgow got the public health problem approach, family intervention, jobs assistance as well as strong policing. All London got was more stop and search (frisk). I wonder why??? Also get the fuck out of here with this back in the day bullshit. London whites were far more violent statistically than today's kids. Remember the violence associated with the teddy boys? Mods and rockers who ran pitched battles in the streets in London and Brighton? Even more recently the Punk scene was notorious for violence.. As for the East End dont make me laugh it has always been violent even before the krays (gangsters).

Edit:
This is a multifaceted issue.
Anthony Jones fatherless kids with mental health issues
Matt thew And no resources.
Or you can move. Ever thought about that? If you're a decent person and the people around you aren't, be a man and leave.
And yet here in Illinois, and particularly Chicago, we have some of the strictest gun laws in the country.
Which is why straw buyers in Chicago have to drive all the way (an hours drive) to Gary, Indiana, where gun laws are far more lax.
@@gentlemantramp7528 Straw?
Straw buyer: "a person who buys something on behalf of another person in order to circumvent legal restrictions or enable fraud."
These are people with clean (or clean enough) police records to purchase firearms for resale on the black market.

Title: gun violence in Chicago
Video: “so did you hear about the poachers and the lion in Africa?”
I live in Chicago and when he said 4 killed 28 wounded I didn't even feel like that was alot
David Leach my roommate is from Chicago and said about 60 people got shot last 4th of July
I’m also from Chicago and I can agree
David Leach right lol thats sad . But seriously its not alot compared to other weekends

Here's an idea, either move from "shit"cago or stop electing derelict leaders like Lightfoot
Lightfoot just got in office for a few years. Give her 2 term, I’m sure she is great
When he talks about PTSD in the ghettos it reminds me of a conversation I had with an old friend recently.
I’m very sorry that you’ve acquired PTSD from your previous lifestyle. I pray that you can manage to prevail through such a tough adversity.

I have lived in Chicago my entire life and I have never been shot at-EVER. And I am over 50. Where the heck are you living in Chicago?
They’re right about Chicago being segregated. The news makes it seem like the city as a whole is a war zone, but I’ve lived on the Northside since 2003 and I’ve never felt unsafe no matter what time of day or night. It really is like two different cities sharing the same name.
Yep, that's the difference between having mostly whites and mostly blacks.
I live in Lakeview myself. It’s definitely a tale of 2 cities

@Galios Elvensong it seems pretty obvious doesn't it?

"Fixing the problem starts with education"
I agree.

@@bringinthedope5929 Shut yo bitch ass up nigha. You trynna speak for all black people?? Sadly not all would want that. Learn too speak/think for yourself "Dose of DK" LMAO.
They tore down all the projects south west side, and the areas 30 times better for it now. The mexican vs black crime used to be out of hand in this area, and now I can actually walk down 18th st and not be scared for my life. At the same time, the crime in the south side got 10 times worse when all those people were forced into other peoples territory, and they all started shooting each other.
I'm really interested in this. I've heard projects cause a festering in crime. Do you think the issue is less housing projects? A lack of the community to report crime and support police? A combination, or something else?
Are you talking about Cambini Green? If so how did they fix the problem, they didnt they just moved it elsewhere
I live in Detroit Michigan. Your chances of being a victim of a violent crime are 1 in 51. Chicago is 1 in 126.
I lived in poor places with less opportunity with no crime, Its the culture of the citizens.
Scott Free Maybe Where You Live Isn’t As Poverty Struck As You Think Or You May Stay In A Small Town
@@dukeroe no, I moved every 1-2 years, lived in 8 states, multiple cities in those states... my family was poor, Had to steal hot dogs just to eat sometimes, Parents were divorced so lived with mom and dad at different times depending on who was doing better at the moment and so I got to experience poor black neighborhoods and white neighborhoods, then eventually suburban white neighborhoods and even suburban diverse neighborhoods, then when I graduated I moved to California where motherfuckers live in half a million dollar houses but somehow are still gang members… I lived all across America and saw all walks of life...
Scott Free You Said Y’all Stole Hot Dogs Yet You Initially Said There Was No Crime I’m Not Getting It Because Last Time I Checked Stealing Is A Crime

It's not really segregation. So we have an assload of different communities. So if you're the average Hispanic or Asian coming to live in Chicago you want to live around a community that you can relate to and understand. And most people tend to live in the corner where they grew up.
HellJumperCentral d
You can tell he touches on all the things he’s been trained to believe:
It’s happening because it’s segregated.
No one cares because we’re black.
If it happened, even a little, to white people they would air lift them out of here.
But as the conversation goes on he gets to what he knows to be true in his head and heart:
Education is important.
I gotta tell you for someone like me from the streets of Chicago who's been through alot and seen alot its nice to hear Joe weigh in
Funny he said “education” would fix things in Chicago and not dads sticking around. Then Joe asked him how he made it and he said “having a mom and dad.”
The issue with everyone knowing it’s a war going on in the 708, and no one attempting to fix it. How do you fix generations of destruction?
Yet look how many guns in rural southern areas. Where people hunt to survive "for the most part." There is not the problem.
Who in the South is hunting to ensure that they continue their existence?!? 😂😂😂
There's lots of guns, lots of hunting down here. It isn't to ensure our existence though 😂😂😂 it is done for sport. Lmao. You're funny, MJ.
@@MarkRai-ko1sk That's ins't true. There's plenty of black folk down here. Ever heard of Atlanta? Houston? The issue is brain-dead politicians in cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, and Baltimore.
Major respect for the man’s father. 2 full time jobs for a years on end. Respect.
MAJOR. Respect (ノ゚Д゚)
Awesome points made in this video about discipline, personal choices and responsibilities, hard work and education. All people can learn something, or be reminded of something beneficial to living a better life, by listening to his life stories. You can see that Joe is impressed by the father's dedication and example, as well as the values, respect, and character he developed in his kids.
Great to see this👍
It is not PTSD it is CTSD because it is continuous, it is still happening, their reality.

It's racist to talk about it.
It's called being a "white saviour" now.... When you worry about the plight of others
lmao false dude. wow you should come on the podcast
2018: "24 people shot in one weekend in Chicago!"
2021: "Hold my beer!"
The problem in Chicago is the media here treat the police like the thugs and treat the thugs like they are angels
because the POLICE ARE thugs. The police are apart of the problem. Not all of them but alot of them are in the pockets of gangs or just plain old dont do their job.
What’s funny though is the one dude says nobody would talk about it unless they were white but I see one out of the two political parties saying something all the time it’s a Democrat run state and city Trump has offered to send in the National Guard and the mayor did not want it what can you do... you can’t help someone that doesn’t want it
Jmac 86 Trump the same guy that said that there would be violence in the streets if republicans didn't win. Make a point but don't attribute trump.
I did make a point but if you don’t think that pointing out the fact that he did offer to send the National Guard and they didn’t want to like I said what can you do I’m not attributing anything to anybody I’m just saying that something needs to be done in the city and it wouldn’t hurt to get some federal help
"If Mexicans Invaded North Dakota." I love Joe Rogan 😂😂😂
The first thing I would do is legalize every single drug. The violence would diminish so fast it would make your head spin.
I live on the SOUTHSIDE of Chicago dog it’s dog eat dog out here
Time to put all rabid dogs down , people should start a go fund me site and have a list of the worst of the worst to get hit 1st ... yes?
Chicago's so segregated..record violence in the black community..

Most gun crime in the Country and its a gun free zone...
If you were informed correctly, you would realize Chicago is within a 2 hour drive to Indiana which is one of the least-regulated gun markets in the country... You can legally purchase a privately owned gun for cash... no paperwork... People like you mis-represent facts just to fit your narrative. Just like the leftists. Yeah gun free zone, but criminals willing to kill someone, are willing to drive 2 hours to get a gun. Not rocket science buddy.
@@skobird2732 You cannot buy a gun in Indiana if you're a Chicago resident and dont have a FOID. The indiana dealers check your state ID. I would know I live in Chicago, have a FOID and buy my guns in Indiana. I will say that gangs probably have installments where "legal" individuals buy and distribute weapons out of Indiana.
+Frank Valineo Well sir, the Law in Indiana is that only Federally liscenced dealers have to perform backround checks, private gun sellers at gun shows and just private sales in general require nothing at all. No ID, no nothing, so how are they gonna know if you're from Chicago ... Private sales is what the gangs thrive off of, cash deals, no paperwork.
@@skobird2732 You're absolutely right man, I have no experience with gun shows or private deals across state lines, but I just looked it up. Perhaps tweaking that loophole can create a dent in the influx of guns to Chicago . Thanks for the quick insight.
There is no such thing as "illegal" guns.
They're undocumented guns. Racist. Hahaha
This is nothing compared living in Brazil.
And? This isn't about brazil ots about chicago. It isn't a competition, IT'S A PROBLEM.

Just send all these Chicago gangs to real warzones and let them have fun.
This is actually kinda genius. He can walk up to a group of dudes. "Hey y'all, I know y'all is killers. How'd you like to kill for your country? You can all go together, make decent money using better weapons. Get out of this toxic city." Dude its fuckin genius
Not a terrible idea not a great one either
You wanna assemble a real life suicide squad?
They not finna fill for a country that dont care about them
I think this was gonna be initiated. Well something like it. Basically put these men in the military. Break them and build them up to be better Men. Show them a group who support each other and look out for each other.

You fix it by changing the way you teach and guide the youngest generation in the areas
This was two years ago and there has still been nothing done about this epidemic.
No, it starts in the home, period. The single-motherhood in the black community is without a doubt the main issue, education would be second.

Texaco Muzik ENT. Black community is the problem.
Skot Thomas you dead granny and papa the problem don’t worry about shit You Dont Have To Live In it’s not affecting your life So Keep Your shit to your self

Organic London Gardeners London Can’t Compare To Some Of The Safest City’s In Th US You Have To Live Here To Know In Most Of Our Inner City’s Young Black Men Are War Survivors If We Make It To 25 And Most Of Us Have PTSD By The Age Of 14 Ik I Did That Can Shape The Rest Of Your Life And Lead You Down A Dark Path And It’s Hard To Shake Because No One Is Dealing With The Actual Problem Were Just Angry Confused And Hurt But IG That’s Our Fault I Don’t Know
Bullshit, I am black and from London, I grew up in Stoke Newington. I got 13 GCSEs all above B, 4 A levels and then two degrees at a top five uni. I lost my job recently was unemployed for 10 months.
And two years later 105 murdered in one month
