At the time I couldn’t stand this music. (Along with Disco and Opera) I remember they had a show on tv and id be like sigh…… But watching them now some fifties years later I can appreciate the talent they brought to the stage and pull off a performance like this. Thanks for the upload MS.
These guys had a great manager. They played Woodstock in 1969! Then perfect timing when the 50s became in vogue in 1973 (American Graffiti movie and Happy Days TV series) which led to the Sha Na Na syndicated TV series.
I literally just learned about Sha Na Na within the last ten minutes and I am amazed at this level of talent and comedy. Qualities which are lacking in contemporary acts.
I would watch these guys every week. I also saw them at Disneyland gradnite 82. I loved their songs. Little did know I would actually meet Dr. Scott Powell. It was at Dodgertown back in 93. He was working with Dr. Jobe and evaluating injured minor league players. When I worked with the Dodgers in the minor leagues. Dr. Powell was down to earth. When I asked him if he was with Sha na na he said yes. He saved all of his money to go to medical school. Awesome group and music.
As a kid in the ‘70s, born ‘69, I had no idea this was a ‘50s nostalgia thing: Happy Days, American Graffiti, etc. I thought it was all part of our modern ‘70’s culture.😂
I like the sax solo at 1:35. But it’s funny how each band member, when he has a solo, gets the center Mic. I think this was more common back then. At 1:53 he starts to sing and he’s actually very good. I think maybe this band had more talent than recognized probably because people saw them only as a 50s novelty act perhaps. It’s not exactly my cup of tea but I think they’re very good. One other thing I noticed: they have a great separation of singing types. I can hear tenors and baritones and maybe even a bass singer. It’s truly as if their voices ARE musical instruments.
Sha Na Na was created as a nostalgia act, but I believe the sax player you mentioned is the only member who really was from a band with hit songs in the 1950s. If my memory serves he was in Danny and the Juniors (At The Hop/Rock&Roll Is Here To Stay). I’m sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.
Awesome performance! That sax solo was fantastic! Life would be a dream if we could go back in time. Happy Cinco de Mayo! 🥃 Happy Sunday 🕊 thank you for sharing! 💖
Guess who eats together at the Carnegie Deli? Bowzer from Sha Na Na and Arthur Fonzarelli! I've been hearing that song every holiday season for 30 years, and only just now learned what "Sha Na Na" was. I just figured it was an old TV show from the same era as Happy Days, since Fonzie is also referenced in the line. And, it actually turns out, Sha Na Na hosted a variety show in the 70's and 80's *called Sha Na Na*. So, maybe I have a latent memory somewhere in deep storage that gets recalled every time I remember when Adam Sandler was funny.
It's not Billy Crystal. It's Johnny Contardo. Billy has guest starred on the show, and Johnny Contardo would plug in a comment/joke recognizing they look alike.
Took the words right out of my mouth 10 when I watched that first run on the little B&W in my bedroom. Blown away. I think they were on a Showtime at the Apollo in that same time period.
It's not Billy Crystal. It's Johnny Contardo. Billy has guest starred on the show, and Johnny Contardo would plug in a comment/joke recognizing they look alike.
Always get a kick out of the “two decades ago are a thing” dynamic. The 50s were big in the 70s, 60s in the 80s, 70s in the 90s, 80s in the 2000s, the 90s in the 2010s. Culture works on a very specific pattern.
I can't remember how I discovered them ,my parents divorced MoM got me (YEAH!) life was better for me and SHA~NA~NA made us survive, my MoM loved Bowser's antic's and singing voice, me too,I loved Metal Punk New Wave and you GUY's when it wasn't cool to like different types of Music at the same TYME, ✌️🤪🚀from SPACE RANGER JYM thanks for listening
I wonder what they thought of this music at the time. It had only been 14 years since the 1950s. That'd be like someone trying to bring back the sound of 2010 right now.
This is great, I never saw it. It was a couple years before my time (1975 :) ) but I still got to listen to this, as some relatives liked oldies. I always did too! What I do wonder, why do the singers almost NOT utter the word 'job'??
I used to watch these guys on tv every week. What a great show they had!
Grease for peace
Me too! Grease For Peace! Long Live Sha Na Na!!!! 🎵👍❤
What an amazing group of talented performers. I have been watching these guys since
the 70s and am always impressed.
Loved this show when I was a kid. I think it was on re-runs by the late 70’s, though. I was 2 when this came out. 😂
@SpaceInTime1885 I DID TOO MY MOM AND SISTER'S AND I WE SING AND DANCE TO THE MUSIC 🎶 I WISH THAY STILL PLAY THE SHOW IT WOULD BE GREAT TO SEE AGAIN
Bowser with the low end vocals, and Lenny On The Sax!🎷
Awesome entertainers! I loved them as a kid. I am 56 now and would still watch them. RIP to those who have passed on.
His last name is Contardo 😉
I grew up on these guys. We would watch their show in the 70's religiously. Great memories!
Followed by SCTV… with Dave Thomas as The Beaver!
Aww, so nice to see a decent quality video of these guys. Thanks for loading it!
I loved their TV show, along with seeing them in the movie "Grease (1978)" playing Johnny Casino & The Gamblers!
Great tv. Nothing compares today
Better then anything put out by today's mainstream artists.
John Bowman AKA Bowser, the tall guy in the black muscle shirt, ended up hosting Hollywood Squares from 1980 to 1992.
Bauman is his last name.
Loaded with great vocalists.
At the time I couldn’t stand this music. (Along with Disco and Opera) I remember they had a show on tv and id be like sigh……
But watching them now some fifties years later I can appreciate the talent they brought to the stage and pull off a performance like this.

I see what you did, there.
what about Hee Haw?
I hope disco and opera are also on your playlist now...
Because you finally turned adult. I did love this even as a kid. Late in your case, but good for you now
They played Woodstock. Sha Na Na had the chops.
These guys had a great manager. They played Woodstock in 1969! Then perfect timing when the 50s became in vogue in 1973 (American Graffiti movie and Happy Days TV series) which led to the Sha Na Na syndicated TV series.
Thats when music was music! 🕺
These guys were always fun to listen to!
The 70s nostalgia for the 50s was strong…
Sha Na Na is bad ass! My Mom taught me so when I was a kid... and Mom didn't lie.
I literally just learned about Sha Na Na within the last ten minutes and I am amazed at this level of talent and comedy. Qualities which are lacking in contemporary acts.
They were a mainstream tribute band before they were a thing.
RIP screaming Scott and all the stars of Sha na na that past away in resent years Amen 💔
Growing up we all wanted to be Bowser. I still love that Sha Na Na woodstock performance.
During it's hey day, half the kids dressed as Bowzer for Halloween lol
When I was a kid this is one of the coolest things ever to hear and I used to love watching Sha na na
Loved Ol Bowzer back in the day!
Only guy that could eat a big mac in one bite...

Fun happy songs with corney jokes. I remember this show when I was a kid.
My Dad and I loved these guys when I was a kid.
Reminds me of the Blues Brothers!! 🎷
💙💙💙
Best TV show EVER!!!! Bring it back to us on MeTV!!!! ❤❤❤
21 years old when this was on the radio . On top of the world . Not so much today 😎
I'm so used to the fast paced version from Woodstock. To think this was one of the first "tribute bands". Good upload!
It’s hard for me to imagine this band was at ‘69 Woodstock 🤯!!
Grew up listening to Sha na na. Thanks for this!
My all time favorite band shanana and still playing there music and all ways will ❤
😊❤ALWAYS LOVED THIS SHOW ❤️

I ❤ these guys. Watched their show every week. Johnny was my fave ❤❤
I've always loved Sha Na Na. I still love these guys.
I know Dan had gone by this time, but where's Screamin'? I'm shocked he's not there.
Sorry, no clue.@@shannonlashbrook3765

Maybe a bass singer? Maybe? If you don't know 'Bowser' is a bass singer, then you really don't know ShaNaNa.
@@legiontheatregroup No, he was not.
Awesome performance!
That sax solo was fantastic!
Life would be a dream if we could go back in time.
Happy Cinco de Mayo! 🥃
Happy Sunday 🕊 thank you for sharing! 💖
More talent in one member of this group than anything that exists today.
Might I add - I 'knew' Bowzer as a kid - Disappointingly, he turned into a real 'winner' Ugh
Loved them as a kid and remember watching their show good times 🎉❤
I was nervous about re-watching Sha Na Na after all these years - but these guys are GOOD!
These guys are so great
Loved Sha Na Na when I was growing up
Certainly one of the best groups to grace our ears. All super talented
Some good times!!!
Thanks
What's great is they made it fun! Good times watching Sha Na Na!
Top notch Sha Na Ana clip! Thanks for posting.
Great blast from the past.
My mom loved these guys
I did they where great
Loved their music when I was a kid. Bowser was classically trained on the piano
At age 12, he went to the Julliard School of Music for his piano playing.
Such good memories of watching these guys when I was a kid!
"Grease for peace." 😃
Yes , these guys were good and had a fun tv show as did Manhattan Transfer , good times for all genres
Johnny Contardo with sideburns! Great 😁
Sha Na Na's Classic Lineup
Memories. Love it.
Nobody has the confident stage presence of Scott Powell. Brilliant
Did you know he went on to become an Orthopedic Surgeon?
simpler times for sure! 🙂
so much fun!
Such great memories! I love these guys!
Omg thank you i feel like a kid
Guess who eats together at the Carnegie Deli?

Denny greene had such a smooth voice
Wow..Billy Crystal has a really good voice..
HA!
It's not Billy Crystal. It's Johnny Contardo. Billy has guest starred on the show, and Johnny Contardo would plug in a comment/joke recognizing they look alike.
love this ❤ thanks for posting 😊
Maravillosos, geniales, eternos
Amazing 😊
Cool!
i always thought Johnny Contralto was cute. Thats back when I was only in my 30's. Now I'm in my 70's, hes still cute.
Contardo. Not Contralto.
Just imagine, if a group like this came out now they'd be preforming songs from the early 2000s
Funny.
What songs 😏
You mean they'd be rapping.
🤯
Except they would be doing it WITHOUT auto-tune or pitch correction.😅
Fun, different, cute and playful!
I wish I was 10 again!
I feel you! My father was the coolest dude ever then!!
Took the words right out of my mouth
10 when I watched that first run on the little B&W in my bedroom. Blown away. I think they were on a Showtime at the Apollo in that same time period.
@@cee8mee I'd sneak in the living room at night to watch. Those were the days!
didn't things seem simple back then?? damn.
I love watching this TV show.I Love Jocko from Sha Na NA Billy Crystal from Sha Na NA.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Awesome
Great!!!!
Hello guys I missed you baby Johnny I love you so beautiful handsome man that me ever see
Watched the show as a kid but mom n dad said it was bedtime before it was over 😢. My fav part was the ending😅
I love SHA NA NA since GREASE

Every time I see Bowser, I see Kozmo Kramer (Michael Richards) when he was in UHF with Weird Al (before Seinfeld).
UHF was filmed in Tulsa and the T.V studio was actually owned by Al's Aunt. Fun fact
Bowzer!💖
I knew Bowzer when I was younger - He was cool back then; Sad that he turned into a real l'winner' > Ugh
I had no idea that Billy Crystal was in Sha Na Na.
Yeah, he was great in Sha Na Na, before he became Adam Ant.
Funny. Right at 0:21 I thought, “That’s Billy Crystal!”
😭😭😭😭
Was just about to type the same thing.
I think he looks more like the killer Scorpio in the first “Dirty Harry” movie.
Grease for peace!
YES!
Too much fun.
I always liked them
Great 😊
I cant believe now that I used to like this
I used to sing "Get a job" to my wife.
I grew up with it
They were also at the first Woodstock.

I was a teenager and thought it was cheesy.
So THIS is how they got their name!!
So sad half of the group has passed on. I always had hoped to meet Jocko someday.
I like the shiw they had in the 70s.
This is great, I never saw it. It was a couple years before my time (1975 :) ) but I still got to listen to this, as some relatives liked oldies. I always did too! What I do wonder, why do the singers almost NOT utter the word 'job'??
I will always tell them that one guy is Johnny Knoxville. Damn Time travelers :D
Bowser is still doing shows. He had a gig in July, 2024.
How many of these guys were the originals at Woodstock?
I believe 4 in this video. Donny York, Denny Greene, John Marcelino & Scott Powell
Jocko (drums), Donny York, Lenny Baker
Santini looks somewhat like mi Da w/ out his toup so.....🤣🤣🤣 'specially in the gold lame'
