Jerry, thanks so much for these videos. After watching you level frets on this Washburn mandolin, I decided to to do that on my Washburn, since I had some minor fret buzzing on the D strings at the 6th fret. I took off the strings, applied a sanding block and went over the neck several times, and crowned the frets. When I was done, I then applied Linseed oil. It looks great, but most importantly, the buzzing is gone. Your videos gave me the confidence to do this on my own. Thanks so much!
This month must be my lucky month. I have just about got my music studio finished and now I get a wonderful concert from you and Randy S.! I will be looking forward to your next"goodun"! Thankz
Hi Jerry, I have the same model, the Washburn M118. I've had it for several years and like it very much. The binding has turned yellow so this one, in the video, is new and not yet broken in. The specs from the Washburn company indicate that that the top is solid, carved spruce, the back and signs are solid flame maple. I looked inside the F holes. The grain pattern on the inside seems to follow the grain pattern on the back, which is a good sign. So, it seems, that it is not laminate. That was a great tip on how to detect a laminate back! The soundbox is larger than other F style mandolins, and the fretboard is 31 mm. which makes it the widest neck I have ever played and very comfortable for ex-guitar players. Some people prefer a more narrow neck, however, and should not choose this model if they have small hands. The action on mine was extremely low, with no buzzes, and I didn't have a problem accessing the truss rod. The cast tailpiece lacks harmonic suppressors and needs the felt strips you typically add. I like what you do with carving out the extension; I should send mine into you and have you do that for me! Your set up work is the best!
I have seen a rash of video stealing going on here on you tube but of videos we have made and the new channel video puts up someone else's video and claims its theirs. But this is the first time I have seen someone trying to get money for videos other than someone subscribing to Paetreon to support a channel. Another great set up of a fine musical instrument. You are the best I have seen. Thanks for sharing.
Wow you did an amazing job on this instrument. It sounds great. Very loud tone. It really rings out. Jerry are an amazing Luther. If you are not already. You should apply to be an authorized repair man for Martin and Gibson. I have a friend that is a Luther. He is a repair man for them. They send there customer to him if they live in this area. They pay him to there warenty work. He seems to make out fairly good. It was just a thought. I always enjoy your videos and look forward to them. Thank you for sharing them.
Thomas Tommy thank you my friend. You are right, I probably should have applied years ago. I've disscussed repairs several times with both Gibson and Martin. They always say, "sounds like you are fixing it the way we would fix it." Oh well, it's a bit late in life to deal with it now. Thanks for watching.
That first screenshot looked legit to me, it looks just like he clicked the support button from your about tab instead of the scribe button, I've never heard of having to pay to scribe to a channel, tho you can charge money per video to be viewed, some channels charge as much as several dollars per video to view it. It would take a pretty big hole to get the dremel into the truss rod lol :P Good set up and video! Nice mandolin playing as well!
Randy, I have no issue with paying Jerry some money for his hard work on the videos, I just ain't gonna give cash to someone else. I've also watched some of your vids and enjoy them too.
Hi Jerry, Thanks for the warning. Of course, they aren't interested in small amounts of money but they are interested in your credit card details. Although I watch almost every video you do I guess that some people pick and choose OR are new watchers. I suggest you do the warning more than once as I wouldn't want your reputation to be discredited. Keep it up - I know it takes a long time to edit the videos but I start getting itchy for a new one after a few days. Farm videos and all. Perhaps you might do one from your recording studio at some point. Cheers, from another UK follower.
Hi jerry! Love the videos. Do you ever stain your deer antler saddles? I was curious because i`d like to send my bridge to you to make a copy but the white just turns me off. I see ways to stain antler online but was curious as to if you tried it or not. Thanks for your time.
Howdy...sorry to hear about that illegal things in UK... Can't wait for another project...got a question...i have a big imagination, that is why i ask...has someone ever asked you to build a blue or green mandolin? That should be cool, and if nobody requested it yet, when i get a bit more finances, you'll build me a sunburst-blue mandolin...😀😀😀 Once again, great work...and i enjoy your soung wery much...they are relaxing, realy beautiful... Hope you post a bit longer project soon... Greeting from Croatia!
Tihomir Kolarek thank you very much I built a red mandolin. I have built a purple violin, but never a blue mandolin. I would be happy to build one for you. Thank you for watching.
Nice job Jerry. Question...were you wearing the prescription colorblind glasses you were going to order? If so, do they differ from the ones you purchased before in terms of how they alter colors?
Great video as always, Jerry! Do you have a recommendation or a favorite entry level, or maybe just above entry level mandolin? I play guitar, but your channel makes me want to branch out.
Do you have an allen wrench like the one for an automobile distributor...it has a handle at one end...a springy thing in the middle and a short stub of allen wrench at the other end.
Mel Superable well that wouldn't be very good because I am too biased. I build my own and play my own so that would be my favorite. thank you very much for watching.
Hi Jerry, watching your videos is like being back in school ! I've been working my way through all of them, but there's one thing I haven't seen as yet. Do you have one showing how you measure and cut the fret slots on a fingerboard? By the way, I am the guy that sent you the subscription screen shot. I haven't had my CC bill in yet so don't know if I got conned. I am however now listed as a subscriber.
George Van Win it looks like I did get a contribution of about approximately $3.95. I can't remember exactly, so maybe that was it. I used to cut all my own fret slots. I don't do that anymore, so it's very unlikely that I'll have a video on that unless I make a special order instrument. Thank you for watching.
Jerry, IF the cash came from my account, I'm very happy you got it. However, the sum I selected was £5 which would be about $6, so IF it came from me we both got ripped off a couple of dollars. Cest la vie !
George Van Win If there's a way to get the specific contributor name I haven't found it. So can't say for sure. Google/RUclips is pretty good at keeping a portion of all revenue that comes my way. lol
Jerry- I'm pretty sure it does not matter to you, but the advertisement today was 'Tires Plus". Is that a local shop?? Usually it's StewMac or Musiciansfriend. You know, music related.. Just kinda funny, I guess to me. God bless you...
ElderlyIron Jeff I thought you knew... There was only two Bluegrass songs ever written. One of them was "boil them cabbage down" the other one wasn't. lol
Thank you again for inviting us all in to see craftsmanship on display. What a treat!
yonks49 you are welcome. Thank you for watching.
I wait for your new videos while I re-watch older ones, thank you for all the effort you put into them!
Amir Abdelmalek you are welcome thank you very much for the compliment there will be a new one out in just a few minutes.
Perfect!
Always a treat, Jerry. Thanks for another entertaining full meal deal. I watch your videos as I exercise on my climber machine.
Edward Petersen glad I am contributing to your good health. lol. Thanks for watching mt friend.
You have a unique talent in your presentation. As good as most "how to shows" on TV. Thank you for sharing.
msapostle you thank you very much I really appreciate the comment

Audio Tech Labs thank you. Good luck with the studio.
That 'Washington County' sounds like the C..T. song from the move Meatballs. Love the music, and learn so much from you.
Steven Miller thank you.

You sure made that Washburn mandolin sound good!
Michael McCoy thank you very much Michael.
Sounds good! Pretty cool about the customer too!

Andrew Bryan thank you. I am planning on doing one from the studio in the near future.
Nice neat job Jerry as usual ! Love that "Old dirt Farmer" song, sad but really nice

Chance Hurley I can dye it black with leather dye. Only had one other request for that in the last 34 years. But it is doable.
wow I'm genuinely surprised. I suppose most people just like it the way it is. I'll be in touch, thanks again.
Thanks for sharing another fine setup video. It sounds like scammers keep coming up with new ways to make money.
Dale Palmer you ard welcome. Thank you Dale.

Jerry you need to try some of the ball end Allen wrenches. If you hit at a slight angle they still bite.
I've got a set of SAE and a set of metric.
Nice job Jerry. Question...were you wearing the prescription colorblind glasses you were going to order? If so, do they differ from the ones you purchased before in terms of how they alter colors?
Dean Jarvis still waiting on the prescription glasses. They are very slow filling orders. Supposed to get a status update today. Thanks for watching.
Another mando saved from a life of mediocrity. Nice job Jerry, gosh the scammers are everywhere.
Dane Nichols thanks Dane.
May I ask if there is a particular reason why you carve out the fret extension? Thank you - enjoyed your video!
Pick clearance
Great video as always, Jerry! Do you have a recommendation or a favorite entry level, or maybe just above entry level mandolin? I play guitar, but your channel makes me want to branch out.
watching video it s easy ...
make video it s more hard , thank you to do it !!!
frederic thom thanks
Do you have an allen wrench like the one for an automobile distributor...it has a handle at one end...a springy thing in the middle and a short stub of allen wrench at the other end.
Richard Mead nope, don't have one of those. Thanks for watching.
I have this same model mandolin. Not a terrible one.
I'd like to see a video of your favorite Mandolin
Mel Superable well that wouldn't be very good because I am too biased. I build my own and play my own so that would be my favorite. thank you very much for watching.

I have no control over but ads are placed on any of my videos. That's all directed by Google. Thanks for watching.
I'm in the UK, and have never seen that kind of thing before. Maybe more to the point many would pay not too see my channel!!
tallthinkev Ha! Thanks for the note.
Sounds more like "Just Over the Hill" instead of "Sledd Ride" !
ElderlyIron Jeff I thought you knew... There was only two Bluegrass songs ever written. One of them was "boil them cabbage down" the other one wasn't. lol
shred it jerry lol
red rum not much danger and me shredding it the way I play. Thank you very much for watching
Yep, I reckon that screenshot is a fraud, but go no idea how it gets in there!
John Garrison thank you John
