"Don't call me Shirley." Bravo Dasha. 👏
When I saw this movie as a teen, I thought it was pretty good. Now that I'm Kevin Spacey's age in the movie, and having only rewatched it here in this reaction, I think it's incredible. There is more to it than I originally thought. Probably the biggest difference in how touching this movie is is the part where Suvari's character asks Spacey's "How are you." As a teen, I understood what the movie was getting at and laughed it off. Today, I teared up a bit at that line. It hit me differently. I'll have to rewatch the movie in its entirety, because things have changed. Thank you for reintroducing it to me, Dasha and whoever recommended it.
yeah, when I was a teen (and way more impressed with The Matrix) I didn't understand why it won awards and was so talked about, it was like the English Patient to me, which I thought was over-hyped junk and so I need to rewatch, but now that I'm older I realize how good this film is, definitely not a feel good movie but a movie that can really help people I think, 1999 had an odd arrangement of films
Definitely got to be middle aged to get it. Which makes it a pretty rare movie, as nearly every film these days seems to made only for the youth audience.
17:32 "Don't call me Shirley." 😆😆👍🏼
Keven Spacy’s personal redemption is beautiful. He finally realizes what is truly important, albeit a little late. He dies with a smile on his face. I love this film.
Well in reality Spacy is still human garbage
The ending monologue is one of my favorite closing moments of a film.
Mine as well. I wonder if the movie's based on a book or a play.
@@davidgalvez5341 It's not.
@@davidgalvez5341 While it’s not based on any play, this was the film debut of director Sam Mendes (Road to Perdition, Skyfall, 1917), who was known prior to this movie for his theater/stage work. The whole film has the vibe of a stage play and I love it. ❤️
The way he speaks is so soft too, I can't get over this film lol
@@Little1Cave "Skyfall" you mean James Bond?
The ending monologue from this movie... I used to listen to it A LOT, sort of like an inspiration. Deep thoughts.
I remember watching this after my shift on Sunday, when I worked at a movie theater in high school. Watched it because I was bored, remember being blown away how good it was. I was 16 years old
I remember going to see it with my girlfriend at the time. After the movie, we walked out, got in the car & proceeded to drive home. Neither one of us said anything for a good 15 minutes. Both of us ruminating over what we’d just seen.
The moment when Carolyn cries into the closet filled with Lester's clothes always makes me tear up.
The “pass the asparagus scene” will never not make me laugh. It’s one of the funniest scenes ever put on film and the chemistry between Kevin Spacey and Annette Benning in that scene is amazing.
Benning is ludicrously good in this. The scene where she berates herself for getting emotional tears me up.
Anyone that acts like that... it's OK to cry !
It’s no wonder why this movie won Best Picture in 1999. Brilliant writing, acting, directing, cinematography, soundtrack, etc. A masterpiece.
The writer of the film Alan Ball went on to write and produce 2 epic series on HBO, Six Feet Under and True Blood. Both are worth checking out!
Huh. Six Feet Under is my favorite series but I did not know it was the same writer. I can absolutely see it now that I know. It comes out clearly in the dark humor and drama.
@@HaienTwitch I feel like American Beauty is just a 2 hour episode of Six Feet Under. Much of the music and dream sequences and very similar.
Still one of the best satirical dramas of all time, as well as one of the best depictions of a mid-life crisis.
Fun Fact: in the beginning of the film, Jane uses more make up on her face and Angela uses way less. By the end, Angela has more makeup and Jane has less. A role reversal in regards to their internal character.
A work of genius, amazing script written by Alan Ball. When Steven Spielberg watched this in a private showing he came out and with tears in his eyes said to Sam Mendes the director (it was his first film) 'You've made an all time classic movie'....
Excellent reaction! I had the pleasure of meeting Alan Ball, the man who wrote this movie. We chatted for a few minutes about his work. Such an incredibly nice man. He told me that a lot of the movie was autobiographical. Not the killing, of course, but a lot of the other stuff. He wrote this over several years when he was frustrated with his then professional life.
I wish more reactors would take a look at this masterpiece. Unfortunately most avoid it because of Kevin Spacey’s real life reputation. That’s a shame.
So points to you for this reaction.
While you’re right that every character here is in need of therapy, I believe that Lester fully redeemed himself in the final moments of his life. That was the whole point of the movie IMHO.
Great reaction. Keep ‘em coming. ❤
Is that why? I have seen a lot of reactors do "The Usual Suspects" and "Baby Driver."
I think it belongs to a kind of cringey overwrought kind of movie that was hollywood's kind of 'indy' look in the late '90s, they were often critically acclaimed in their day and are still remembered today without really deserving to be and wouldn't be if they were made today. Magnolia is another good example
@@helvete_ingres4717 American Beauty & Magnolia are great films.
@@-M0LE possible but it's like... 14 accusers, all with similar stories (boys at the time) and he was known to take trips to epstein's island regularly
@@-M0LE It's a possibility, but not something I would bet on.
Dasha, What strikes me, with each and every video of yours, is your empathy, your instinct, your maturity, your generosity, your light hearthed spirit, and your common sense. You are a rare gem. Whish you luck, make money and have fun!
This is among my favorite films but I hardly ever watch it. It's such a heavy movie, but it's near perfect. The ending is beautiful and touching but tragic. It's a movie of broken people finding their spark and it's fascinating
Idk what prize you should get for making an Airplane joke during American Beauty, but you deserve something. RUclips should make a special plaque for that.
🥇
Ha!!!! "And don't call me Shirley!". Dasha is a Genius.
Seriously, like how in the holy F😮!!! I was caught wayyyy of guard, an absolutely LEGENDARY quip , all hail Queen Dasha 😂
This is such a 'forgotten' gem! 🌹
This and the movie falling down are the best representations of the breakdown of American life.
Falling Down is brilliant.
Hi friend, not nearly as good as falling down but the movie "god bless america" is similar and may be something you would like.
Thora Birch was only 15 or 16 when filming this, including *_that scene._* The studio had to obtain special permission from her parents, and they actually agreed. It was quite polarizing.
Her parents were both adult film actors
Dasha hit it right on the head at the end with her initial take on it. Rarely do you see a movie with so many defined characters and every single one of them goes on a dramatic character journey without it feeling overwhelming and crowded.
Wow! Dasha delivered a well-articulated synopsis of this film! I love her unique way of speaking as well as her reactions!
The title comes from the type of roses called American Beauty.
Here a list of my fav movies I think you'd like that not many people have reacted to: Rounders, Eastern Promises, The Death of Stalin, High Fidelity, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, The Count of Monte Cristo, Whiplash, Amadeus, The Talented Mr Ripley, Casino, Oldboy (2003), Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), The Banshees of Inisherin, In Bruges, Air Force One, Almost Famous, True Romance, Joint Security Area, The Emporer's Club, Sunshine, The Handmaiden, Uncut Gems, The Before Trilogy and last but not least a double feature of The Three Musketeers (1993) and The Man in the Iron Mask
Note that Studio Ghibli likes to get reaction channels taken down, so reacting to their movies is a bad idea. Bigtime copyright Nazis.
This film never fails to make me cry at the end. Such an incredibly beautiful film! Ppl might hate kevin spacey now and although i cant condone his actions, this film will live on forever as a classic.
A lot of his movies are great. You can't take away that the man has talent. I also can't condone his actions, but he gave us some awesome movies.
So a filthy molester has talent so you cocksuckers worship him eat a gun barrel faggots.
@@morkcallingorson774 lol what you okay there buddy xD
@@morkcallingorson774 Homophobes get blocked in this house. Fuck off.
H wasn't found guilty of doing anything wrong.
Dasha: This film is mostly about..."transcendence." The examples are nearly continuous: Lester's smile just before he dies (and indeed, his "fatherly" change toward Angela when he finds out she's..."just a kid." And his transcendent experience of dying), It's shown several times by Ricky (his discovery of the beauty of a bag floating in the wind, his experience of "no fear," etc.) Even the song playing when Lester and Angela kiss, which is originally by Neil Young, is quite strongly an anthem of transcendence). The film's writer, Alan Ball, is a Buddhist (which is a religion of "transcendence") -- and also happens to be gay. He began writing this film after a particularly bad day, when he just felt that he HAD to write something about his true feelings.
You love drama - LA Confidential - 50s era crime drama with Guy Pearce (first big role) Russel Crowe (first big role) and Kevin Spacey.
One of the best films ever made.
50s
@@andrewjones575 Ha ! Thanks, thought I hit 5 not 2...
This is in my top 10 movies. It's SO good. You have to look past Kevin Spacey's off screen behavior and just see him as the character (at least I do). This movie just gets even more real as I grow older. It's really well written, directed, and performed. A true classic IMO.
Edit - The score in this film is also insanely good. One of my favorites.
You know what? I can't think of a movie I really, really liked that didn't have a great score. It's like an integral part of the film.
I remember seeing this in the theater. Me and my friend busted out laughing when Annette Benning said "we lived in a duplex!" as if it was super low class. We'd both lived in duplexes before. They're not too bad. Better than having an upstairs and downstairs neighbor.
This film is still just a fantastic film.
"Don't call me Shirley"...I caught that.
When this movie came out, there were a few other films that addressed awakening of self realization. Fight Club also falls into this category. We go through our lives with a perception of what is important and what should make us happy. Reaching that moment of clarity where we see reality is elusive.
American "It's OK to be creepy" Beauty is on my top 10 favorites list.
I loved when the girl said, "You are so busted."
This film is actually about happiness.
How elusive it is, how much we yearn for it.
It's a reminder of the phrase, 'One is only as happy, or unhappy as one imagines themselves to be."
The unnecessary drama of our lives keeps us from focusing on what is truly important, and that is love.
Love of our families, ultimately of ourselves.
I've never been angry at the end, cause Lester was free.
He had discovered his true self, and was finally happy.
He made it.
For Kevin Spacey movies.... one not to miss is "The Negotiator".
And THE REF, it another Christmas movie
Very underrated film... Surprised anyone had the guff to review it
One of my favorites. Great reaction, thank you for being among the first to do it.
I saw this movie in 1999 & it changed my perspective on so many things. I have even studied the film a bit. There are so many hidden details. Like, the reflection in Lester's computer resembling prison bars, for instance. Despite how it is depicted, Angela represents Lester trying to re-capture his youth. Which is why he realizes, she isn't what he desires, when he finally has that chance with her. Great film 100%!
This is my favourite film of all time. Beautiful, tragic, suspenseful, emotional and I just love the ending narration.
This is my absolute favorite movie
I fell in love, and had a torrid romance with, a 21 year old.
As a teen this was a great movie...... now I'm 51. This movie means something entirely different now to me
14:44 that is EXACTLY how it started for me, I wanted the same thing 🤣
This was my favorite film for the longest time. The controversy that exploded around Kevin Spacey kind of tainted it, really, since he allegedly went "farther" than even Lester Burnham did.
Don't think you will see this comment Dasha, but if so;
Know that when it was released, this movie was acclaimed by many people to be a remarquable representation of the american society. 20 years later, it's just more true than it was back then.
A similar movie you should check out is Magnolia (1999). It has an all-star cast and features one of Tom Cruise's best performances
Your thumbnails always crack me up lol
32:30 When I had a heart attack I went into cardiac arrest for four minutes and it was a really strange experience. Nothing like I expected.
To set things up, when I was 3 years old my leg was amputated. When I was 11 I had to have a revision. This is very common with amputees who are still growing. Your bones get longer from the ends, and on the ends of your bones you have growth plates. These plates don't cause the growth but the guide it.
An amputee's bone also grows from the new end, but without the growth plate it doesn't grow straight.
So when I was 11 I had to have surgery that involved breaking the bone, then pinning it to make it straight again.
A few days after this surgery I was home, walking on crutches when I fell, with my full weight right on the end of my stump. This totally messed up the surgery I had just had and the pain was amazing. I have had a lot of very painful things happen to me, but nothing ever hurt as bad as that. It just hurt *SO* badly.
Then I had a heart attack. That is the one thing in 50 years of life that hurt worse than falling on the end of my stump.
So the ambulance gets to the hospital and I am in the ER, feeling very uncomfortable, answering questions from the doctors. I ask for someone to please remove my leg and a nurse comes up. I start to explain how to do it but before I can the nurse just does it. I'm feeling rather impressed and am about top ask if he can remove my liner as well when what I can only call a discontinuity takes place. I'm still feeling impressed with the nurse, as if there has been no pause but several things have suddenly changed. I am now laying flat, looking to the side. Before I had been sitting up lookingh at the nurse whi just took my leg off. I'm now stark naked and someone is messing with me down there. And someone else is pounding the ever living crap out of my chest. I realize someone is performing CPR and I start to worry. When I learned to do CPR they said to never do it to someone who is awake. I am now awake so I ask, between compressions, "Should you be doing that when I'm awake?"
Thankfully they stop doing CPR at once. I was surprised how much it didn't hurt. It wasn't comfortable, but it wasn't that painful.
I have recovered from being knocked out before, and every time I had a feeling of waking up. Not this time. I felt exactly as I had felt when my heart stopped beating. I was even having the same thought.
This is because I was not unconcise, I was dead.
My memories from this point are fragmentary until the next day, I think I was going in and out of consciousness, but I did not have another cardiac arrest.
But I learned what it means to be dead, because I died for that four minutes my heart had stopped. I am convinced that when we die, that is it. You just stop. There are no thought, no dreams, there is nothing. It is very much like the state you were in before you were born. What were the several billion years before you existed like? That is exactly how the billions of years after you die will be like.
To be afraid of death is to be afraid of nothing. Nothing can't be scary, can it?
I don't think it's weird or creepy, I think it's scary real. People nowadays go through this more than ever (in all fronts) and it shouldn't be that way at all! Beautifully made movie (cinematography, etc.), hence the name of the movie. Great reaction Dasha, as always!
Hi Dasha, if you like drama in your movies then please watch "Chaplin"(1992) or "Anna and the King"(1999).
two fantastic movies that i really hope you will enjoy. another very dramatic film is "Glory"(1989)
Dasha thank you for this movie review. Very good! I enjoyed your interpretation; this is a classic - sad but very true for so many.
Good one. Your reaction to the end was ace!
American Beauty is a fantastic film. If you enjoy dramas like this I recommend checking out 'The Dead Poets Society' with the wonderful Robin Williams playing a serious, rather than comic part.
Other beautiful dramas I'd recommend are: The English Patient, Chocolate and Remains of the Day.
You never really know what's going on in someone's life, things can appear quite Pleasant on the surface but behind closed doors, they can be suffering or going through hell, just Imagine how much happier everyone in this movie could have been if they had just been honest and communicated with each other, but everyone was lying and putting on fronts, first you must be honest with yourself, almost everyone in this movie was suffering in their own way. It was a good movie and another great reaction, I always enjoy watching your reactions Dasha you’re a highly perceptive person with a big heart ❤ I've been thinking about becoming a Patreon member, but lately, I've been having to take care of my sister's cancer treatment, so right now I need to keep my priorities straight
Sam mendes makes great movies. Road to perdition and 1917 are stellar.
18:00 I knew someone who died when I was 4 years old. One of my playmates passed away when I was 4, and I was sad, because I was told he could no longer play with me.
My nickname for this movie is “Why we close our window blinds.”
Amazing masterpiece American Beauty starring by Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening. This film won an Oscar for best picture and best actor by Kevin Spacey and the iconic scene is Mena Suvari in the ceiling with red roses just epic👍👍 thanks Dasha
One of my favourite movies, and a cracking soundtrack!
Hi Dasha! I love your reactions. I have a suggestion for a future video: "School of Rock" with Jack Black. It's a funny comedy about a failed musician who becomes a substitute teacher and gets the kids to help him win a 'Battle of the Bands' competition.
I honestly think that your reactions get better and better, Dasha. Do keep up the good work. This movie caught my attention when it was on satellite TV. So I only saw parts of it. But when I did manage to see all of it, I was blown away. The music is also really good.
Timeless Masterpiece.
Probably the least rewatch value of any movie I've given a 10/10. It's so infinitely depressing that you have to be in a specific mood for it, but it's made so well I'm glad I saw it.
Wes Bentley (the guy with the camera) can currently be seen on the TV series Yellowstone, which I definitely recommend. He was also great as the villain in the underrated horror movie P2.
17:35 That was hilarious Dasha. Please keep making unexpected Airplane! references. 😂
Great movie, great reaction, great thumbnail.
You misinterpreted the Colonel kissing Kevin Spacey. He was trying to understand his son because he thought his son was gay. He wasn't gay himself, although many people have that theory. The director explained this in an interview that the kiss was about the Colonel trying to understand why anyone would be gay because it just didn't make sense to him.
I don't buy it.
By far one of my favorite reactions Dasha has ever done. Just one more reason she is my favorite. Well done Dasha

I love movies it's a
shame that there are no good American movies anymore
I came into this movie a couple minutes late and missed the opening narrative. At the end when he was killed I was completely shocked. It seemed I was the only person in the theatre that didn’t see that coming. Wasn’t until quite a few years later when I rewatched the movie that I’ve found out he tells the audience he is going to die. I think this movie works way better without that opening narrative telling you that.
I think that within 20 minutes everyone has forgotten the opening dialogue.
Such a great movie. So beautiful. Have this and, "Se7en", on DVD. Kevin Spacey is such a wonderful actor. ✌️❤️🌹

You misunderstand something - the claim of this movie is not that there are regular people and the people in this movies are broken and therefor different.
The claim is that these folks ARE regular people.
Of course there is exaggeration used for story purposes. But the core claim is very clear.

I don't know if you've seen Spanglish yet, but you should definitely check that out if you liked this.
The sad thing is that this movie wouldn't be made now. The idea of a 42 year old being attracted to an 18 year old would be deemed unacceptable, even if he didn't go through with it when he realised her innocence, and was really just a catalyst for him to feel alive again, rather than the middle-aged shell he'd become.
I think it's good that it makes you feel uncomfortable. Movies shouldn't be afraid to take people out of their comfort zone, and tell the stories of people who think in unconventional ways.
This movie is so good
Maybe top 10 ever for me, it really is THAT good.
