The little Mini they drive in this movie is LEGENDARY among car enthusiasts. It's a 1965 pocket rocket. It's like a go-kart. It's tiny, super light, goes wherever you point it, and it accelerates like it's arse has just been scorched. It's super fun to drive. It's very stripped back. It's very durable. It's ideally suited to busy, tight, narrow, twisty traffic. In these locations I'll back the Mini every time. The Mini is one of the things everyone knows and associates with "Great Britain", from an era when the UK had the best reputation for engineering. It's one of those "how do you say UK without saying UK" - a picture of a phone box, or a Mini will suffice. Bonus points for a Mini in British Racing Green.
Along similar lines, you could try The Italian Job from 1968 with Michael Caine. It has a car cast of 3 glorious little Minis when they were at their peak popularity. Bourne has that European feel to it, despite the main cast being American. Ronin from 1997 is kinda similar. The car chases all involve regular everyday cars, on various tight, twisty back roads through little scenic villages in France. Both are excellent movies, which also happen to have legendary car chase sequences.

When I first saw this movie, I could really 'relate' to the Bourne character.... After I awoke from a 10 day coma (when I was a teenager) I had strange images and scenes in my mind that I simply did not understand. As months in the hospital continued, I came to realize that I had many skills that I simply had no idea I had ever learned before. --It was very frightening and confusing as I "learned" all about myself. "Muscle memory" on the typewriter keyboard.... Advanced Algebraic calculations and science formulas, etc.... 😲

Do watch the next 2 movies! The Bourne series was so influential on the spy/action genre. For better or for worse, 'shaky cam' fight scenes became the in thing (few did it well!). Also, it's probably not a coincidence that "Die Another Day" which came out the same year, was the last Pierce Brosnan Bond film. The whole James Bond franchise was transformed to emulate the Bourne movies' grittier, down-to-earth approach.

I never get why with such big budget movies, they don't go the extra 0,1% and get the foreign stuff right. Like the Russian name in the passport, how hard can it be to make up a viable name? The spoken German from the side characters is pretty bad too. Can't be so hard (or expensive) to find a native speaking actor for a role that only has 1 or 2 lines. Sure, the majority of the audience will probably not notice the difference with stuff like that, but the movies are distributed internationally, and if you speak the language they try to imitated, it always throws you off.
Anyways, great reaction as always. And I wish a happy new year.
P.S.: I can highly recommend "Run Lola Run" with Franka Potente (Marie) in the lead role. Being German myself I have to admit, there are not many German movies I could recommend (and even less to foreign viewers), but "Run Lola Run" is a great and unique movie.

2002 and The Bourne Identity comes out. With it came a whole new perspective in the Spy movies which before this were ruled by the James Bond movies. The Jason Bourne movies were grittier and more violent. Eventually it caused a shake up and an invigoration in the James Bond movies and the introduction of a grittier more violent James Bond in the form of Daniel Craig. Also, it would lead to the creation of John Wick.

Hey Dasha I think you really enter the mindset of Jason Bourne. --------- Bourne wants a regular life as he watches the kids at the lay over house. He just wants to be a regular man not a world class GOD Tier assassin. Clive Owens' dialogue lets us know so much, "They takes so much from us. Look at what they make you give."-------- The price of being a 007 agent is so high for sure.

  • @danielwagman9794

I think Franka Potente's amazingly realistic performance as Marie flies a bit under the radar. Her character is also living on the fringe of normal life. She turns out to be nice, honest, smart and very warm and empathetic, with normal human frailties. And yes, the subtle but true-feeling subplot is that she's starting to LIKE him like him and, as they arrive in Paris, is gently probing to find out if he has a woman in his life. I think she was feeling happy to find no evidence of a girlfriend in his closets or in his medicine cabinet!
A few quick thoughts about the plot...why DOES he have the bank account info in his hip? He could have easily memorized the number, and the bank didn't seem to require the laser light. Why give possible enemies access to that info, as happened on the boat, if he were dead or unconscious? Is it really just in case he gets amnesia? Also, wouldn't Franka Potente's character Marie have been caught up in the rukus at the embassy and unable to get out so quickly? I mean she was right there at the window, with all her papers out. And wouldn't it have made sense for Treadstone to send Nicky to his apartment in Paris and maybe just ask him what was goin' on? He had obviously, apparently, interacted normally with his landlady. But I guess this is actually consistent with Chris Cooper's character being a bad boss! One more thing, just food for thought; if the two police officers in the park had been female officers, and he had quickly bashed them to unconsciousness with the baton, would his character be less sympathetic? I bet he would have uttered a sincere "sorry, sorry.."

@@thejamppa Exactly my point, it redefined how action films were done. Yet whenever people list the best film series this is almost never included. It’s easily in my top 5.

Thank you, Dasha for reacting to this movie! I too have the same thing happen when I hear Matt Damon's name or see him. In my head, he is saying "Matt Damon" in the puppet voice! Also, thanks for the translation! You are right... they should have come up with a better name for him in Russian. Now that you know more about him, what name would you have picked for him?

Good catch on the title. Bourne is a deliberate pun on the word born. Welcome to the world of English homophones.

What's great is that ALL the following sequels are at least as good or, often, even BETTER than this. This is definitely a series that you should continue with. Furthermore, in the next in the series, he goes to RUSSIA! You can tell us if his Russian speaking is good.

You need to watch Part 2 (Bourne Supremacy) and part 3 (Bourne Ultimatum). They delve deeper into who Jason Bourne really is and why he was the way he was. Also, part 2 has Russian bad guys, so you can pick apart their Russian.
Part 4 (The Bourne Legacy) is worth a watch, though Matt Damon is not in it, but it does shed some light on the programs (Treadstone, Blackbriar, etc.) that were the factories for these supped-up spies/assassins. Part 5... watch at your own leisure, but I suggest lowering your expectations a bit. It doesn't really bring anything new to the table.

You'd make an _excellent_ agent (covert operative) yourself, if it wasn't for your 'thing' about blood and your two phobias!
Bravo! (And keep on translating for us!)
Looking forward to your reactions to the other Jason Bourne movies!

Not the same type of movie, but deals with some similar themes around identity and such: Christopher Nolan's first major feature film, Memento. Definitely worthy of watching if you haven't already and is definitely a Nolan movie through and through. Some say it's his best film. I'm not so sure, but it is good.

I agree. A lot of Hollywood movies do not make enough effort to have good consultants help with foreign languages and cultures. It wouldn't take a lot to raise their game quite a bit. Too many nephews and lovers on the payroll.

Dasha ... God, I love your reactions and you too. You're such a great human and so damn smart. It's a pleasure to watch these movies again with you !!! Of course, you NEED to watch the next 2 in the series, The Borne Supremacy and The Borne Ultimatum. The story continues and just keep getting better and better.
The 4th movie in the series, The Borne Legacy, is good but it isn't really a sequel ... it's kind of more like a "side angle" to the others. It touches on Jason Borne, but it stars Jerremy Renner (Hawkeye from Avengers movies, Arrival) and Rachel Weisz (The 1st & 2nd Mummy movies, Black Widow), Edward Norton (The Incredible Hulk [2008]), Scott Glen and Stacy Keach.
