Thanks to the tips, I went from barely touching the rim to consistently having my fingertips 2 inches higher. The knee-to-knee one made my jump a lot more consistent, huge props.
Let me add some info as a 7'5" high jumper. Lowering the center of gravity isn't restricted to one axis as you are showing, but you have a complete understanding of the physics with some caveats. Yes, force over time, this is called a lever, or leverage. How can we elongate and increase the force over time (leverage) from what you are discussing? Force levers and leverage over 2 axes. That means leaning back into the penultimate stride, and also to the side. This puts leverage on the X and the Y axis, increasing the leverage and multiplications of force over time. This is why all modern high jumpers like myself utilize the Fosbury flop method of high jumping. We run a curve so at the plant we are leveraging multiple axes to increase the height of our center of mass as high as we can. But the center of mass in a good high jumper actually may pass underneath the bar. How can we do that? Moment of inertia... Because we use 2 axes when we plant to take off, our body will rotate equally and opposite in the direction the torque was applied. Thus we spin head towards the ground and back towards the bar, making the most efficient use of energy to clear the bar. Is your vertical measured from stand still no step or did you run into a vertical measurement? I had a 38.5 two footed no step vertical, so my running into a vertical jump would have easily surpassed your measurements. EDIT: Bro I just watched your video, that's not how to measure true vertical. You have to just stand with no steps straight up jump. If I did what you did my vertical would have been like 60"+ University of Oregon School Record Holder 7'5" 2.26m 2000 Pac-10 Champion and Newcomer of the Year 3x D1 High Jump All-American 2x Olympic Trials Participant 1999 MVC Champion University of N. Happy you were able to dunk but I also wanted to tell you some good news. It might seem unrelated to anything you just said, but it’s very important. I wanted to say that Jesus Christ loves you and died for all of our sins. Everyone has sin and the wages of sin is death. Sin leads to death and death leads to hell (Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23) But Jesus died for our sins and paid our debt to sin, so anyone who chooses to believe in Him will be saved from hell and could go to heaven. If you want to make Him your Lord and Savior you could say this prayer: Lord Jesus, I confess You as my Lord and Savior. Please forgive me for all of my sins, I repent and I turn to You. Please help me to live for You, and I love you. In Jesus name, Amen! If you prayed that, Glory be to God! Please get a Bible, read it every day, pray everyday and please go to church. Jesus loves you!
Just subscribed! Exceptional explanation. I'm trying to get back my vertical (being in my 50s, still working out but losing "something" in my jumping/speed/etc - tough to explain. This will help!
this is so awesome that you give such amount of content for free❤also, do leg sleeves help with knee pain or injuries? REAALLLY hope you answer🙏the only one who i can trust.
I've been on a trip, so I haven't been able to try this all out. But just messing around in the hotel room it feels like the tip to lead with the knee will make a big difference. It feels like 1. it will let me get way lower and 2. that it will allow me to carry more speed into the jump. I'll test it out for real later this week, but I think it might be able to instantly put on a couple of inches.
I'm gonna try this tomorrow, my vert has kinda been all over so think my technique isn't very good. I'm 5'7 and some times I grab rim but others I can't even touch it
Isaiah I’ve been jumping trying to dunk since I was 11 years old (obviously on low rims till about 13.5 years old ) and I am now 15 I’ve been working out in the gym for about 2 months. When should I start applying actual plyometric exercises?
How much do you think each pound of body weight effects your vertical? I could slam when I was a kid, off one leg, but that leg, my left, got chopped (compound fracture tib fib and a pin etc, at work, and I've never been able to jump as high off the right leg. Gonna try your two-leg style, but I've put on about 20lbs of muscle since then. Oh, and I'm old as dirt. 57. May never slam again but I will improve my vert.
I think you should’ve also mentioned at 4:47 was that tendons only store and release energy for a very short period hence the need to jump off quickly :)

Hey man, love the vids and website!! Gotta question though; if I do proper strength training and plyometrics through the summer, how many inches can i add to my vertical before the next Volleyball season in August? (My vert rn is 30.5 inches and I've been doing jump training for 3 weeks)
My form's penultimate is not NEARLY long or low enough. I've been stuck at 34-35 inches for a month and a half(ish) with no progress on my two-foot, but throughout the entire 2 months my 1-foot got to where I was 33-34 inches and dunking. I think form must be my issue.
i have a problem im 4'11 and im stuck at an 18 inch vertical after about 2 months of mostly just jumping i just cant lift off the ground can somebody advice me something?
Damnnn I been making that critical error on kicking out to elongate my penultimate, excited to see if I can get the lead with knee step down and how it affects my vert
Awesome on jumping high but your theory is wrong.first thing to when jumping high is solid muscle 2nd thing is learning the timing of using your arms when lifting off the ground, for instance look at your arms at time of jumping then look at Vince Carter, Jason Richardson, Aron gordan, Earl Manigault, Tracy mcgrady, Spud web, and so on. It's all the same technique with the using of the arms when jumping vertical style
@@DavidBergman1776 thats why i said single calf raises cuz you put like 2x more weight on it which is what i do but i add like 10% bodyweight to it for better results
Most people are far from being coordinated to get that much momentum and have a controlled jump like a pole vault. I had a 36 inch vertical in my prime, definitely enough to dunk but never managed to master that maybe because I trained weights more than jumping which goes against law of specificity so obviously plateaued way too early
Because you shouldn't just do one type of training. You MUST periodize. Do one type of training at MOST 6 weeks at a time. You need to get power by heavy squats (as heavy as you're capable of) and also you need to actually train jumping. For squats I would start with a 10, 5, 3, 3, 3 reps per set cycle, as the reps get lower, weight gets higher. You'll get the hang of it.
With this tip I went from just touching backboard to jump over the Empire State Building, thanks!!

This video was SUPER helpful. Much more digestible than longer productions, and very actionable with 5 steps. Thank you!
