    Many professional orchestral musicians (especially violinists and violists) deal with chronic back and neck pain, especially if playing for many hours sitting down. Besides overuse, posture, and technique, another thing that often contributes to this kind of pain is a weak mid-back area. It's our responsibility to take care of our bodies before and after sessions.
    Here are 5 great exercises to strengthen the mid-back. These are based on what I learned in personal training, physical therapy, and from Angela McCuiston of @Music Strong Fitness Training (IG: @musicstrongfitness): musicstrong.com/

    Excellent video. I wish the string magazines would spend more effort in discussing the physical ailments of violin playing and their solutions. I believe this is a topic you should continue to revisit, with an emphasis on right shoulder problems. Heifetz, Milstein, Perlman, Vengerov all suffered from right shoulder injuries. Thank you! 🙏🏻🎻

    Excellent video, Inna! So important to work on strength and flexibility away from the instrument to avoid injuries. Thank you so much!

      You're very welcome! The back is actually the most commonly hurt area for orchestral musicians!

      @@Violinna, I’m the 73 year old beginner i told you about. I have a lot of pain between my shoulders when i play violin. I did PT for one month, and it didn’t help much. I didn’t understand that my mid back is weak. I’ll continue exercises, some of these I already do, and I can now add more. I only last about 15 minutes playing at a time, then I must stop and rest. I’d sure like to increase that.
      I also get professional massage twice a month, one is deep tissue, and the other is gentle shiatsu massage.
      Thank you very much! You are the consummate violin instructor.

      @Violinna  Год назад +2

      So sorry!! I hope that more musicians can be alleviated of pain!! Have you tried doing these exercises yet (or some modification) for a couple weeks? I don't know your specific situation, but would recommend physical therapy and maybe even a body mapping teacher - sometimes just the setup is the reason...or even just the chair!
