    I’ve been roofing and installing seamless gutters for a long time and I warn every homeowner that either puts on new gutters or new roof where they have thought about leaf guards or anything of the sort I tell them never to buy leaf guard gutters. They are worse than just leaving them open and letting the gutter do their normal job. I tell customers that it’s cheaper to hire even a roofer to come clean your gutters than it is to pay for these to be installed I’ve even come over to places where they have got lead guard are completely covered in inches of dirt. And pine needles rendering them completely useless making the rain run right off the roof as if there are no gutters at all thank you for sharing your video. I’ve been blasting them all over social media for years because I think it’s wrong to trick our elderly and veterans into thinking they’re getting some thing that is actually useful when in fact, they’re being just lied to if I were you, I would sue take all your video evidence hire a lawyer, and take them to at least small claims or something let them know you mean business don’t let them just walk away with your money.

      I was a roofer for 12 years in my younger days {I'm 68 and retired now}. I came across all different types of gutter guards and screens and I can tell you that none of them were effective. Back then I lived in Columbus Ohio and every autumn after the leaves fell the company I worked for would would get lots of calls to clean gutters and I did a lot of that work. Many of the homes I worked on had gutter guards and I would have to remove them to clean the gutters and clear downspout blockages then replace the useless guards making the job take twice as long which cost the customer extra money in labor.
      I live in SC now and probably twice a month I get something in the mail wanting me to get an estimate for gutter screens. I just chuckle and throw it in the trash. I am still able to clean out gutters myself. I think these companies prey on elderly folk. My advice is to call a reputable roofer and have them clean out your gutters. Don't fall for it. They absolutely do not work.

      Thank you! I've been looking at getting these gutter guards but hesitated because I have a ton of trees and pine needles and didn't see how the gutter guards would work with them. I'm glad I read your post and will continue as I have been, having someone clean my gutters in the fall.

      I've had one experience with 'small claims' and will never do it again.
      After you pay the fee to make a claim, you have to show up on the determined date, sit and wait for the judgement, and even if you 'win' your claim YOU are responsible for actually getting your money! What's the point in filing a claim, then?
      YEAH, GOOD LUCK WITH THAT! 😱😣

      Yeah I hate to blame victims, but $11,000 for gutters? With a price tag that high, I can see why things like "100% free labor" sounds appealing. That is a very deceptive tactic and I'm almost certain that's what that company did. Who needs to pay labor when the product is being upcharged 500%?

    • @Jrichardstein
      @Jrichardstein 12 дней назад

      Sorry for the trauma they caused you. That price is absurd, and the product may work in climates with drizzle rain, but no way can that laminar flow design work with sticks and other debris dropped by trees. I got a deep gutter installed, put in stainless steel gutter guards and they work great. Not the micromesh ones, those clog up, but the larger hole design works great, even for pine needles.

      I’ve been a STATE LICENSED contractor who specializes in exterior work since 1999. I can tell you I’ve never done a gutter job on a single story home with leaf guard for more than $2500. We constantly come in behind these guys and fix or entirely redo what they’ve messed up. A lot of customers who got their bid first said they knew it was a scam soon as their sales guy is taking 25% off in minutes if “you sign today”. You can’t NEED $4,000 for a job and be down to $2500 in minutes of starting the sales pitch. And most of my interactions in Florida with this company are just leaf filter related. They don’t get many full gutter jobs down here. It’s all just adding leaf filter to already installed gutter systems. But they switch things in those like the hangers for wrong sized hangers and I’ve had 3 entire houses of gutter fall after they went and “upgraded” the system.
      These aren’t contractors or even Constuction oriented humans. They’re sold a franchise and are getting into work they’ve never done.

I wanted the inside scoop on LeafGuard is all. She said they don't work well in heavy rains (here in the Midwest we get a lot of heavy thunderstorms in the summer). That didn't surprise me. • @Workingcockers
      @Workingcockers Месяц назад

      Your gutters may be over flowing from to small of a gutter during these heavy rains. If you have a 5 inch K style gutter, then you could go with a 6 inch K style gutter which doesn’t sound like much, but adds a great deal of extra water volume. If you have proper run off away from the house, I would not worry about it so much anyway unless you are getting damage to landscaping as the run off occurs. Gutter guards will not help you with only heavy rain, it will actually make things worse. If your gutters are old and worn out, look at the 6 inch gutters

    Very good lesson here Brenda. Thank you. I grew up in tropical climate where houses are built with corrugated iron roofing sheets. The sheets are simply extended beyond the edge of the building so that when it rains, the water falls at least 2 feet or more beyond the structure onto grass. No gutters required unless you want to direct rain water to a holding tank.

    • @edwardgiovannelli5191
      @edwardgiovannelli5191 2 дня назад

      Most houses in America also have roofs that extend well past the side of the structure, but people here don't like water running off their houses or something so they get gutters. In most instances they don't actually do anything worth the expense, but people who don't know any better want them because they think they need them.
      Its crazy.

At a local restaurant I eat at the owner mentioned a toilet that did not flush properly so he called a plumber, the plumber said those 3 toilets were not commercial type and the only way to get them to work would be replace them, to the tune of about 5,000.00 I told him I would take a look at it, they have been there since 1970, and only 1 was having a problem, I snaked it and didn't find anything, but I noticed it just wasn't much water coming out when flushed, (by the way, these were the commercial toilets that have no tanks, just the big chrome handle to pull to flush) I pulled the valve out and found someone had put in the wrong valve, it wax supposed to have a 3.5 gallon valve, but only had a 1 gallon valve, so a 25.00 valve fixed the problem, 4,975.00 less than the plumber quoted. I clean them every year. Because of the way they are made they are not easy to clean. A contractor poked a hole in the bottom of the gutter while building a patio. I tried to get the local Leaf Guard contractor to come out and repair it. They refused, they told me the only option was to replace the entire run across the rear of my house. Hired the same people that cleaned my gutters to install it and they did the gutter cover installation from the roof all the way around the house in less than 30 minutes. 5 years on, It's been fantastic. No longer the splitter splatter of overflowing gutters in front of my front porch and side window. Every year it pays for itself. Sure a lot of youtube videos say that eventually the gutters will fill up with roof granules as the roof degrades but I can use the money I've saved to deal with that later. Ya it will be a big expense later but so will the roof replacement. Home ownership ain't cheap.

      Same here. I have often seen their TV ads. Each time I asked / told myself: "That looks like it might be a good idea,,,, but,,,,, will they actually work"? Apparently from the video by "Brenda", they do NOT work at all. I have done some work part-time & full-time on home construction/ painting/ repair / block wall-concrete walkways and basic home repairs since I was a young teenager. I retired 5 years ago, but still have some tools.

    Our home is surrounded by trees, so the gutter cleaning every year was a major pain. I looked at variouos gutter guards and noticed a major problem. They all seemed to lay flat on the top of the gutter. And, of course, they were expensive. I searched around and found that I could get a box of 3 foot gutter guard panels; enough to cover 100 feet, for abouot $90. They came, and were even supplied with self-tapping screws and a magnetic drill bit to hold them for one handed drilling. The change I made, was not to install them flat on the gutter, but to match the pitch of the roof, which was an a-frame. The debris washes off, but the holes capture the rain and let it flow through the gutter. About a total of 4 hours of work and my whole house was completed. Cost? Under $100 and my time. This was last year, when I was 74.

Instead I agreed just to have my existing gutters cleaned for a cost of $585. LeafFilter subcontracted the work and the subcontractor told me if I had gone directly to them I could have had the job done for $125. I got burned by LeafFilter.

    I’m 71 years old. Had a heart attack in 2022 which required a quad bypass to repair. This was in Jan of 2022. In June of that same year after getting an estimate to clean out the gutters and install Leaf Guards I decided to tackle it myself. I had been in rehab for 6 months and lifting weights with the approval of my Cardiologist.
    After convincing my wife I would “ take my leisure “ on the job, I got the materials together and a ladder and began to clean out all the gutters. Took 2 days to clean the gutters and 2 days to install the leaf guards. I watched a You Tube video to learn the ins and outs which made it way easier than I thought.
    My son wanted to help me but I insisted I would be fine.
    It was time consuming and me feet got sore from climbing up and down the ladder for 4 consecutive days.
    But, I finished the job. The estimate I received was for $2100 ( which is why I researched doing it myself ).
    The total out of pocket for me was 42 leaf guard sections at $4.50 a section and 4 pairs of work gloves, which I had already.
    The total cost was $189. I was shocked that’s all I invested. But, 2 years later, my gutters are 98% cleared and flowing freely. I brushed them off or spray them off once a year in the fall. We have quite a few trees.
    A side note……. After the job was complete I spent the next 2 days relaxing and recuperating.
    I told all this to show how much you get ripped off from some of those companies.
    They would have made $2021 profit from my savings!
    I realize most people at my age shouldn’t be doing this type of labor outside but I wanted to see how far I could get the job done. Little did I know I could complete it myself!

    LeafGuard is heavily advertised on some niche-TV networks in the US.
    The aspect that always got me puzzled about the design of it: How can the rainwater drain into the gutters when there is a layer of leaves on top of the LeafGuard grill screen? Leaves piled on the roof and gutters would block the drainage of the rainwater to the gutters, making the water flowing to the ground as if there were no gutters in the first place.

      LeafGuard, allegedly, works by using the surface tension of water. The theory is that water will follow the curve of the edge into the gutter. Meanwhile, they say, leaves, bugs, dirt, and debris keep going over the edge (not into the gutter) under its own momentum. Knowing that water is a "sticky" molecule, and seeing the design of the gutters, I could never wrap my head around how they figure debris - especially small bits of debris - would make the jump to avoid being flushed down the gutter; it doesn't make sense. But, they sure do have some slick marketing!

    Aloha Brenda -
    Thank you so much for sharing your poor experience.
    I'll be 76 in June and I'm a Vietnam Combat Veteran and a military retiree. I live on the Windward side of Oahu. Once in a while we get some major downpours. I don't know the pitch of your roof or the roofing material type, but that makes a difference on how large your gutters and downspouts should be. About a year after I purchased our home I noted a slight leak in our asphalt-shingled (the least expensive material initially) roof. So after considerable research online and visiting a builders expo in Honolulu, I decided to have both my 1800 sq ft Rancher and 500 sq ft 3-car detached garage re-roofed with Aluminum Shake Roofing. It has a Lifetime warranty. Of course, I had to pay more than twice what an asphalt shingle roof would cost, but if I had the asphalt shingles I would have had at least one more roof replacement and 5 years into another. The humidity and salt air plays havoc in Hawaii. Also, normally you have to pay more for materials and labor.
    Unfortunately, I didn't know that when you install a metal roof, you probably need a larger gutter and downspout. I had the smaller one (either 4" or 5" K-style style with 2" x 3" downspout. So, during heavy rains it would overflow. So several years ago my 20-something year-old aluminum gutters were beyond their life expectancy so I decided to replace them with new 4 1/2" x 6" gutters and 3" x 4" downspouts. That increased the volume by 40%. So far, I never had any waterfalls. One last thing. If you live where there is snow and ice, you should ask for the heavy gauge (0.032 inches) aluminum. Although we have no snow, I opted for the heavier gauge aluminum rather than the industry standard 0.027 inches (or some companies will use a lesser thickness of 0.019 or 0.025 inches). Altogether I paid less than $3,000.00 for 5 gutters and 8 downspouts. Of course, in my case, I didn't opt for any leaf filters so every so often I have to clean two gutters out because of the trees overhead.
    Anyway, ALWAYS do your own research. The local gutter installer wanted to know how I knew as much as I did about gutters and downspouts. I pointed to my smartphone and said, "I Googled it". He just shook his head. Too many folks apparently don't understand that smartphones can do much more than take photos/videos and look at social media posts.

My response to it was all of these risks and potential fatal flaws that are likely to happen soon after the manufactures warranty expires in a year, tells me I should not buy this sub standard product. It’s funny how saying thanks for the heads up and walking towards the store exit changes a sales representatives perspective on the quality of their products. I finally got so tired I agree rationalizing that it is a BMW, the repairs would be outrageous if anything ever went wrong. Well it turned out that this warranty was $3,000 financed over 6 years at 5.5% and only covered from the end of the factory warranty (50 k miles) till 75 k miles. And yes there was a problem at 52,000 miles, the center console where the A/C blower motor is inside the dash sucked in a paper napkin that was in the glove compartment because BMW does not put screens over the ports that allow air to get to the motor. They had to disassemble the front interior of the car to get to it with a fairly hefty bill which I submitted to the warranty company, and they denied the claim saying that was not a mechanical repair but "cleaning." AFTER MARKET WARRANTIES ARE ALL SCAMS! ALL OF THEM, and what gets me is how Walmart wants to know if you would like the warranty on your purchases, I am like it is a $1.49 lighter, but if something goes wrong they will pay to ship it back to China and have it repaired and returned to me? And the Warranty is $12.99? I never, NEVER ever buy the useless inconvenient expensive fraudulent warranties!

We kept the Eucalyptus trees lining the back of the yard trimmed enough so if they fell, no part of them would reach the house. After a neighbor had house damage from their tree that was taller than the length between it and the house, my ex stopped grumbling about paying for the trimming. It also kept a lot of leaves off the house, so our gutters were never clogged. It was always a hell of another cheaper to keep the trees trimmed than to deal with damage. And there is no need for leaf guards on the gutters.

      I agree. My wife called them for gutter guards. Guy came out and said 5,000. I laughed in his face. I said the same thing you did. 250 to clean that’s 20 years. The guards, which they manufacture, are sheet metal and plastic and screening. The cost to do that is not much. Huge markup on these things.

    We have had a better experience with Leaf Guard. Did a 2nd story renovation on our home , the old wooden wrap-around deck had suffered more damage due to not having a gutter system. So after replacing the deck and painting the 2nd story, we had Leaf Guard to a small gutter system on the two sides of our home that needed it. No trees around so it's just for water: 2 years in so far, no gutter issues, no clogs or pests, and it's keeping a lot of runoff away from the wrap around deck. Mission Accomplished. Thank you guys! Sucks to see someone have a bad time with them.

      My mom has also had a better experience than most I hear about. After my dad died 3 years ago, we had Leafguard installed on their house because I didn’t want my mom to worry about it. There are 3 very large trees around the house and so far the Leafguard has worked well. Yes, they are way overpriced, but they have saved my mom from having to clean her gutters for 3 years now. I hate that other people are having a bad experience.

    I remodeled for about 20 Years and I've always hated every leaf guard type guttering (the super cheap chicken wire ones are actually okay, but you still have to keep them clean)- there's nothing to improve with normal gutters, it's way cheaper to just pay someone to clean them out once or twice a Year- even if they worked it'd still be cheaper to hire a cleaner. Thanks for the video, hopefully you've saved some folks a headache and a lot of Money!

    The collapsed drain pipe 2:40 that was buried in the yard was a major problem that caused the water to back up and gush out of the little clean out door in the down spout pipe. Your gutters were probably full of water during a rain storm. Glad you had that underground drain lines replaced.

    • @ppumpkin3282
      @ppumpkin3282 Месяц назад +1

      I have old underground drain pipes, they were there when I bought the house thirty years ago, I imagine they are all clogged, and have tree roots growing through them. Whenever a heavy rain is predicted I just attach an eight length of gutter to the down spouts and have it run away from the house (in a real heavy rain 3-4" in 24 I'll ad another eight feet. Fortunately my house was well sited (thats one of the reasons I bought it), and the land slopes away in the back and front. For me, I don't think its worth the expense to dig up the old drain pipes.

      Clean out door is upside down because the lip must overlap at the bottom. You will see water like to stick to the surface because of the water tension. Unfortunately not all of the water will stick to the surface and will go over gutter opening. I say it is a bad design and a money pit

    I’m glad I saw these commercials on TV. I did my two gutters front and back 128 feet of gutters. It took me less than two hours to do, and it cost me less than $100.
    I bought these 3 foot long leaf guards, let Simply slide under the first row of shingles, and snaps on to the edge of the gutter for around 70 cents each, free shipping. The ones I got were made in Ohio. The biggest problem was, keeping supplied with these plastic guards, fast enough, because they literally take about five seconds to install each. my wife I installed them, and we are in our 60s. I put a video on my channel where I did a 28 foot section of my house for the video to show how simple it is… I have the video on my channel. It’s only a few minutes long, and I get right to the points, no graphics, no music.

    I've installed two sets of gutters on two houses, buying the gutter components from a contractor wholesaler. I installed gutter guards on both sets, commercial slide-in on the first, which worked OK but not great. When it came time to do the second job, I researched and wound up using expanded aluminum material from the local metal yard instead of commercially available guards. This worked well, and cost around $200 for the whole house. In huge downpours, the gutters will overflow in a few spots as the down spouts get overwhelmed, but this is uncommon and not a big deal. Shop around, this is a local handyman-level job and shouldn't be anywhere near the prices quoted in the video.

    • @wodefjandi512
      @wodefjandi512 Месяц назад +14

      That is correct. $2k max for full gutter installation from a reputable company on most houses. It’s the salespeople that are to blame. They prey on ignorant people. No empathy, just dollar signs in their eyes. The customer too shares partial blame at times. They expect way too much. It’ll never work perfectly. Don’t expect it to. And…. when it doesn’t, don’t blame others. You signed the contract. Pulling out a violin and telling a sob story putting no blame on yourself is just wrong. Do your own research. Educate yourself. Be armed with knowledge and it’s far less likely to be taken advantage of.

      You’d be surprised how much decent gutter gets sent to the scrapyard. New roof? New siding? Might as well get new gutters. Functionally they are fine. Might be dirty and dingy and look bad, but otherwise fine and still do the job they were designed for. So, to answer the question…. literally everyone has access to this at a scrapyard.

    Advice to homeowners (I'm an engineer but do home inspections on the side): Just leave the gutters open, even the cheap screen-type leaf guards have issues. If you hate cleaning the gutters, then check out professional gutter cleaning services, they are probably cheaper than you'd expect. The first time I had my gutters cleaned by a contractor, I couldn't believe how cheap it was compared to how much I dreaded that task. And, if you happen to be installing new gutters for some reason, check the price on the wider size with the wider downspout pipes. If you can't afford to install a fancy underground drainage system, then you can just stick inexpensive 10 foot long irrigation pipes on the ends of the downspouts, a bit unsightly but effective.

Soooooo many sales tactics/pitches, took 2 hours because I was trying to be nice, but I wanted to yell "JUST TELL ME THE PRICE."
