  • From commercials to print ads, you may have seen the company "Leaf Filter" promising homeowners that they'll never have to clean out their gutters again. While the gutter guards deliver on that promise, homeowners say the product creates an unexpected dangerous problem in the winter.

I got a quote from Leaf Filter and Leaf Guard. No doubt Leaf Guard is a great product but they wanted $14,000 to do my house. Ended up buying a different system online from Menards at about $1.50 a foot and installed it myself. I spent about $140 to do my entire house and had it up in about an hour. Couldn't be happier.

i called Leaf Filter for a free estimate a yr or so ago,,,,the guy came & proceeded to get his ladder & measuring tools , jumped up & got down to business; working, measuring, figuring, up & down the ladder in front,,,,then went to the back & proceeded to do the same thing so i calmly told him,,,"ulm, hey buddy,,,my house is 80 ft long back here same as up front except the front porch makes the 80 ft length divided in 3 sections!" his reply was, "well,,,i have to earn my money!",,,,,so i said,,"ok,,,,just trying to save you some time!" it was about 2 hrs later when he finished & handed me the estimate,,,,,i just looked at him like he was a highway robber & asked, "$7, 450??? ,,,,seriously man,,,where is my quote?" so he said that was what he figured & so i said,,,,well Dude,,,no way i can afford that now or in the future & i started heading for my front door which made him yell that he couldnt afford to drive up here all the way from Memphis for nothing which stopped me in my tracks so i quickly said, 'GO COMPLAIN TO YOUR COMPANY, THEY ARE THE ONES THAT SAID FREE QUOTES!!" pfft!! my first & last conversation with those numnuts!! ha

Congratulations on saving youself from these shysters. Good for you! There is no alternative to keeping your gutters & downspouts from overflowing than to have to actually getting up on your roof every year and physically cleaning your gutters. If you do that, your gutters will always work and you won't have any problems. Also, half the time the reason gutters overflow is because the DOWNSOUTS are blocked up. So, you have to make sure those are running every year also. There is no other alternative.

They came out to quote a small section of our house that was on the second floor so we couldn’t clean them. It was about 15 feet total. They quoted $2450. I jumped up from my chair and said “well I’m sorry we wasted your time”. The salesman didn’t stand and said “well what were you thinking.” I said “we had a quote from another company for $540.” He called his manager (of course) and got him to approve $580. So that tells you the markup. They were still making a profit at $580 but wanted to charge $2450.

Years ago my company did leaf filter jobs. We would do the mesh filter as well as gutter replacement. One day we show up at a trailer park to one of their jobs and find out that the company had charged this trailer owner $10,000 for new 6in gutter and mesh filter. There were three runs of gutter total on the customers trailer, maybe 120ft total.
For my company to come in today and do that much gutter and install a leaf filter that is aluminum and a product that actually works would be somewhere sub $2000.
Leaf filter is not only a scam but criminal

My house came with Gutter Helmet. Not only do they freeze then melt and drip onto the driveway and deck and then refreeze, they also create a buildup of ice back onto the roof. I dread the next time we replace our roof and have no doubts we will be spending extra to replace the rotted wood from all of that water damage. I agree with those saying just pay someone to clean the gutters out once or twice a year and you’ll save a ton of $ in the end.

here. Started at approx. $11,500 and ended up at around $4800. Very old high pressure sales tactic and yes they almost demand that both decision making adults be there. Customer service is no help they absolutely do not care about their customers. We are fighting this the best we can but they only send a service tech out once a month. My first clue should have been when I asked if they have their own installers he said yes they do so not to worry they won't hire anybody out of Madres. The more I thought about that was how he just discriminated and how non-transparent he is. From the installation to them being up there to the customer service it's all a scam. A french drain could divert water away from a house but would not prevent some ponding. Many communities including the village where I live require the leaders to empty into a dry well so water is returned to the ground where it is needed instead of running down the lawn or driveway into the street and into the sewage system which costs the village a lot of money.

It seems that ice issue would happen just the same if the gutter were clogged with debris. Ice will form naturally in that fashion even without a clog.
Leaf filter should be offering that heat tape service as an option but not all climates would require that option.
Some climates I can see algae and mold being an issue. So … you definitely mitigate the larger debris and in some cases even vermin and pests clogging your gutters..
As far as maintenance free .. i would say to have that expectation would be idealistic.. However, an angled brush that telescopes should be included to scrub the filters from the ground with some algicide. Seems a lot easier to do than getting up on a ladder.
Leaf fitter needs to fully educate their customers as to the maintenance requirements for each environment.
I am so curious to see if the new filter mesh solved the problem…
As for the pollen the angled brush from the ground should also take care of that…still for me no ladder is s plus

We had the Leaf Guard filters installed a couple of years ago. And YES, they DO plug up when there's a freezing rain, and the freezing rain spills over the gutters onto our sidewalk. It's DANGEROUS! But maybe the heat tape, inside at least the at-risk areas above walkways and driveways, might be the solution. We haven't tried it - I don't want my 84-year-old husband trying to do this. And yes, they are expensive.

Regardless of what leaf guard does to their filters, in winter this is a cold zone outside of the attic’s blanket of insulation. Only heated wire installed in a zig-zag configuration plugged into an GFCI outlet that used a sensor inside the gutters down pipe will sense 32 degrees and turn on heat over gutters. There is actually no other way to achieve this loss of ice dams in winter. Many houses have outlets under the roof on the soffit correctly wired to handle the 20 - 30 Amps these heated wires require. They clip to gutters and up to shingles. Open gutters or protected gutters are still subject to outside of the thermal blanket of insulation in the attic and will freeze. Do not use nail & tubes to hold gutters up as the weight of water is 8 pounds per gallon, it adds up fast with 400 - 700 pounds of weight in or on top of your gutters in every 20 feet of length. This heated wire system can be ordered by length and installed by a professional or homeowner who has a good ladder and comfortable with heights!

When customer calls us that have leaf guard or any that is screw in I normally pass on the job unless they want to pay 10x amount for my time to remove and install. No matter what you still need to clean them yearly, you will still get dust moister inside the gutter that will collect over time and turn into mud that will clog your downspouts.

Remove, reallign, reseal.....the filter comes in 4 foot sections right out of the box and they were supposed to use hidden hangers only. Leaf Filter is just one of many gutter guard companies who actually think their products are the absolute best. The idea is nice but the stainless steel mesh is to small of a hole pattern . If you get a general rain they work nice, but if you get heavy thunderstorms the water cannot penetrate the mesh fast enough and will wash over the edge. As far as cold freeze area's the mesh is going to freeze the water on the very top and water will freeze solid and build up. The other problem is the cost (outer limits)$$$$. Way overpriced. And the installer is the one getting hosed. If their product had a raised lip on the front edge it would most likely hold some of the water back from rolling over. There are alternative products with better performance. I have 50 years on the roof as an installer and have seen every one.

It has almost been 2 weeks since my first request for service. Each time I've called I've gotten an answer, but nothing gets done after that.

I used to work for them as subcontractor and sometimes the customers give me the checks and for just 30ft of leaf guards they charge ,1,900 dll is ridiculously a lot of money I feel so bad when I get the check because they are disability people

Debris may not enter the gutters but it does build up on the screen causing rain water to flow right over the gutters. I calculated that for what I paid for my Leaf Filters I could pay someone to clean my gutters for 25 years! The guarantee is for the gutters not clogging, but not the actual screen on the Leaf Filter! Over hyped product!

@@cldemaine It was a waste of time. The company that installed them no longer does business w/ Leaf Filter (they've switched to a different product) and the customer service people simply confirmed what I said in my comment.

During winter ice will build up on Stairs, Sidewalks, and Driveways. And a lot of ice will build up after rain storms. Solution to this problem is to put salt on Stairs, Sidewalks, and Driveways.

If you get a moderate to hard rain the water runs right over the top of the very fine mesh and onto the ground. If you get a nice light rain then they probably works alright. But don't be foolish enough to spend five, six thousand or more dollars for this. Waaaay over priced.

Have them, sadly. Any hope of getting my money back? Or any recourse legally? Or do I just have to pay someone to come and take them off as I don't have a ladder that will reach up to the second-story roof?

Don't purchase LEAFFILTER GUTTER PROTECTION system from LEAFFILTER NORTH because they do clog on top of the filter which is not covered by the warranty period Thanks Roger B
