Okay. So now I'm going to teach you how to place your left hand on your violin.
In a previous video, I spoke about how to place your violin on your shoulder the proper way. So once your violin is up and looks beautiful and it's just in the right position, you put up your left hand.
Now, the first thing to think about when you put up your left hand on your instrument is, you're putting it on the neck of the violin. Here's the neck of the violin.
Now the first thing you think about is where your thumb goes, and what it should look like. Your thumb should look like this.
For a beginner, you may even want to pick up something like a sticker, or even like one of those corn removers from the pharmacy, and put it right about there. And your thumb should point, ever so slightly, in the direction of the scroll, which is here. So in this direction. And the thumb should not be too straight, but on the straighter side, but relaxed, not bent. On the straighter side, but relaxed.
Then the other thing you have to think about when placing your left hand, and after thinking about the thumb, is the arm. Your arm needs to be very, very straight. You don't want the wrist coming out. You don't want the wrist coming in. You want it to be perfectly flat like a pancake, all the way from your elbow to your palm of your hand.
And then last but not least are your fingers. Now, depending on which string you're putting your fingers on, you might want your elbow a little bit in, or a little bit out, but we'll talk about that in another segment.
When you put your fingers down, they need to be put down right on the very tip of the fat of the finger. Not on the nail, and not off the tip. The tip of the fat of the finger. So let's say I'm putting my first finger down on the A string. This is the tip of the fat of the finger. Second finger. Third finger. Fourth finger.
Now an example of doing it wrong would be like this. So you want it to be on the tip of the fat of the finger, and if you think about that everything else is in the right position. You have a little platform here. Here's the platform for the second finger, platform for the third finger, platform for the fourth finger.
If it's like this, there's no platform. The pizza will fall right off the platform. So you want it to be nice and tall.
Again, don't move the thumb. And this is the perfect position for the left hand.

I send this video home a lot to give students some extra help with left hand positioning. That's usually hard at first until it clicks. The only thing I change, is for me a "pancake hand" is when the child places their palm flat against the neck and uses the "flat" fingers. So, I usually have to tell them we just use different words and explanations, but to follow what you look like. :)

Yes, terminology is the key. Often confusing, so pictures, and different angles are helpful.

Oh corn remover! 🤯😳 GENIUS!!! I might have some, but I need to ask my parents if I can use it on my violin (fiddle) because I have two but only one has 2 finger tapes, which that one is pink. And my other one is just about over 100 years old (it belonged to my great great grandfather) It is very old no one has played it about 114 years! 🤯 I’m the first 😁! And anyways I would need to ask my parents about fingerings.

Is the bottom of the neck of the violin supposed to touch the inside of my left hand? I was taught to cradle the neck between the knuckle of my thumb and the knuckle where my left index finger connects to the hand. This has made it extremely difficult to learn vibrato. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Can anyone plz guide me.. should we press a string all the way down untill it touches finger board or just lil bit. Also how much pressure to apply? Thanks

    • @anotherpracticeboy40hrs57
      @anotherpracticeboy40hrs57 2 года назад

Generally you shouldn’t be pushing the string down all the way to the finger board, but it should just be enough pressure to create a clear sound

Hi. I'm a current flutist (flute player) and I have a question about this that I have asked in a different video but didn't get response for. I am a lefty and I want to learn how to play the violin in the future. How will this not only affect others around me but how will it affect me in general? What should I do so it doesn't affect me and the others around me if I decide to learn how to play the violin

people there is not a mistery about the left hand that needs to be explained in one hourtime step by step ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,do it the natural way like perlman , vadim repin , ricci , vengerov ,,,,,,,drop the neck of the violin on the left hand like the street gypsy violinists ,,,,and start being free and walking with the two feet on the ground instead of walking on a string in the air ,,,,,,, actually the holding a pizza dish position is the greatest way of relaxing your left hand ,,,,,dont let your self be told how it should be ,,,, think by your self with logic , using fysics , gravity and natural way of holding the violin ,,,,,remember you dont hold a violin ,,, you drop it onto your hand ,, the hand do not hold any violin but only does not alow the violin from folling on the flour ,,,,,,i am a violinist and if i didn t do it this way i would have never been able to play the most dificult repertoire ,,,,,,,

Hi, I'm a beginner, and have a couple questions for you.
First of all, when you spoke of the platform you make with your fingers for the pizza, does it matter much if there are slight deviations in its surface level? For example, during practice, I had some pizza resting on my fingers, and it was sliding around a lot - felt a bit like I was balancing on a tightrope, but kept it there - and it added a level of stress to my bow grip. I guess I'm just not used to it yet!
Secondly, I noticed quite a difference in finger placement when trying to manage an entire pizza vs. just one slice. One slice I could sort of toss back and forth as I was 'feeling' the music, but the full pie felt like... I dunno, a 'canopy'. It sort of dragged my music down, in a way. I tried playing a classic Chicago tune, but the deep-dish still muffled everything. It DID seem to add a level of soul to the music that I didn't get from a standard slice (the slice produced more of a little ditty), so I think I can work with that. It also didn't seem to matter as much where my fingers were at at any given time with the full-on 12 inch, as I think the entire pizza sort of... 'encompasses' the entire musical piece, if you will. And an added bonus: tossing the pie into the air adds an impressive down-beat upon landing that you can swing up out of while carrying right into a long bow draw across the pepperoni and onions!!
    Your thoughts?!

Your wrist is NOT totally straight, like mine--it's bend a little. And I think this is natural with your anatomy as with mine. I will veto my teacher in this point. Forcing into 100% straightness is violence and unnatural unless a student feels comfortable with it.

Charisma Spencer-Bates congrats on looking condescending yourself. "I am 16 and already play two instruments" who cares? I played the piano and guitar by the time i was 7. By the time i was your age i could play more instruments than there are fingers on your two hands. No one cares. Don't say it like your something special. I'm not special because i play a lot of instruments. Second, "anyone at any age can play happily" this means that there are probably 7 year olds watching this right now. Because this is general education and who knows how old or young or talented or inept the viewers may be. It needs to be understood so that ANYONE AT ANY AGE can happily watch and understand the video.
      Thanks,
      Another angry RUclips commenter.
