Bleach TYBW Episode 12 - Everything but the Rain June Truth
The reason Yhwach stole Uryu's mom's powers was because she was a Gemischt Quincy, a half-blood, which Yhwach considers impure. Why she died was because Isshin said she already has a weak constitution so the stress of losing her powers killed her outright. Masaki was impure because of her inner Hollow despite being an Echt Quincy, a pureblood. Masaki survived having her power stolen, but because she was fighting Grand Fisher at the time it ended up killing her too.
Fun fact, in the manga she still lived for 3 months after the selection before she finally died. I guess they simplified it in the anime.
That doesn’t really make sense though because ichigo ain’t full Quincy and by those standards neither is uryu. ichigo is 20% Quincy 20% human 20% soul reaper 20% hollow 10% ninja 10% saiyan so why wouldn’t he take their powers just the opposite he wanted to recruit them

Just a fun fact, most of these episode titles are referencing manga titles fom the early chapters in the story.
All of them are chapter titles actually. Which is something the previous anime didn’t do unfortunately cause Bleach has some very creative titles

There's a popular theory about the significance of that scar on the mom's leg. The theory suggests that perhaps that scar was from a hollow attack back then from when she was still an active Quincy. And just like how Masaki's Quincy blood was basically tainted by the hollow that bit her, the same thing could've had happened to Ryuken's mom. Katagari mentioned that Masaki could get treatment from the parents so it's probably what they did to Ryuken's mom, granted Masaki's case was a little complicated cuz it's not from an average hollow so idk if the same treatment would've worked but that's besides the point. So basically the mom was saved but since she was already tainted by the hollow, she can't bring herself to bear more children at that point since it would also get passed on. And that could perfectly explain why Ryuken's mom feels so strongly about wanting to keep the pure quincy blood in their family going as well as why she's always strict towards Masaki and why she's putting all this pressure on her.
It's just a theory out there but I'm actually inclined to believe this is canon, especially since they showed emphasis on that scar even for a brief moment. If anything it was probably a subtle hint to her background.

Btw, the reason why Uryu's mom also got her powers taken was because she's a half-blood Quincy. To Ywhach, half-bloods are also impure. Masaki was a pure blood but since she got tainted by a hollow she's no longer considered as such. That's why Ywhach took their powers. Now the reason why Uryu's mom died from the process was because she was already naturally weak. Her powers may have been the only thing sustaining her life so taking that away would kill her. Fun fact, in the manga tho, she didn't die right away. She got like a couple of months before she finally died to it. I guess the anime simplified the story.
This is also why Ryuken HATES Quincies and never wanted his son to be anywhere near them. Also, the "selection" process hits Quincy whose bloodline has been diluted by humans. Basically, pureblood Quincy like the Kurosakis and Ishidas are much stronger than the mixed blood Quincy and so they might survive having their powers extracted; mixed blood Quincy do not survive the process and will slip into a coma and die. It is also suggested that most of the Sternritters are purebloods, with only a few exceptions that I can't detail due to spoilers.
[Tidbits & Clarifications]
- That last bit about Yhwach being responsible for Masaki's death is also important because as I stated on several occasions Ichigo still carries that trauma, he still blamed himself for his mother's death, He couldn't accept himself because he was the cause of his greatest failure, and now he has a true target to point his blade towards.
- Uryu's mother was sick and unwell so apparently her Quincy abilities was the only thing keeping her alive, so when Yhwach stripped her and all impure Quincy of his power, she died.
- The special Gigai Urahara used with Isshin was the same kind Urahara used in an attempt to secretly turn Rukia Human.
If I remember correctly, every “impure” Quincy lost their life, except one…

Uryuu's mother was not royal class (Echt Quincy), that why she was chosen to die. Quincies take a lot of german references from WW2 and the Arian Race
Yeah, there are a lot of Nazi references in the Sternritters besides the aesthetics. The pure blood Quincys are like the Arians, which is what Hitler(Yhwach) considers the "true" Germans; while the half bloods are like the Jews which he despises. The Auswhalen selection process is likened to the Nazi concentration camps during the Holocaust. Even their battle tactics are a nod to the Nazis. Just like how the Nazis dominated the earlier rounds in the war using their "Blitzkrieg" method, the Sternritters also won their initial attack through similar means.
There are people like this in the real world, but without the power that's possessed in anime, a lot of people don't see it.
Makes you wonder what Zangetsu thought when he saw Ichigo's mother being killed.

Something that’s not really talked about a lot is just how important this talk and explanation really was for Ichigo. For all these years since he was a child Ichigo has carried this burden of guilt on his shoulders even after finding out it was a hollow that killed her and being told by his dad not to blame himself because he married the woman that would die to protect her son, Ichigo still always carried that guilt and it’s from that guilt where Ichigos overwhelming desire to protect people and desire for power stems from. And now after finally learning the full truth of his birth and the true nature of his death he has a real true vendetta against Ywhach which you could argue he didn’t really have against Aizen. This battle is personal for him and after hearing his “June Truths” he feels revitalized and at peace so to speak and it all culminates with the next episode
there was a little error in the start scene where komamura had his current design. Back then he should be wearing a helmet to hide his face from people. Just a small boo boo they made.
Masaki was a pure quincy but because she was infected by the hollow that made her impure so she got hit by the quincy selection ting. Uryu's mother was an impure blood quincy from the start so she got hit too. And cause she was frail she didn't just lose her powers it took her tf out.
They cut out a scene which probably was a good decision overall when isshin saved masaki from the hollow inside her where it straight up showed her titty.
Nobody knows for sure what the point in showing ryuken's mom leg with the hollow scar on it was but i assume it was to show she got made impure too so she can't have anymore pureblood children. If ryuken got infected as well thats the end of the pure quincies. He ended up marrying the maid so no more pure bloods. But its not even confirmed it was a hollow scar. coulda been anything.
He should've wrote more scenes like this episode cause hes not bad at it. Orihime confessing to ichigo and gin thinking about rangiku were pretty great. But it's in the wrong magazine and came out years too early for that.

I don't know if it's different in the manga, but from this I choose to believe that Masaki/Katagiri were slowly robbed of their powers over days or weeks instead of a single instant. The timing is just too perfect and it would bother me if it was an instantaneous event. Like, the first time Masaki uses her power in a week and it just fails, she didn't notice it fading until it was too late.
It was instantaneous in both manga and anime
