He wasn't in the fullbringer arc and we get no flash back or hint and the moment he calls it out we cut to Zangetsu having all the pieces slowly connect and just go "OH OH MY OH MY FUCKING GOD" It was done so well to and makes sense and doesn't hurt the past(Don't Include Filler Zanpaktou Rebellion Arc).

Only when the Squad Zero blacksmith tampered with his real zampakutou Ichigo managed to reach again Old Man Zangetsu and see also his hollow self before they vanished
I like how here hes told to say goodbye to Zangetsu as he knew him. It a way he did but ichigo chose to accept both white and old man zangetsu as his new Zangetsu as a team of 3 in himself as his whole self.
