As the programmer for pitching/batting and the home run derby, I just wanted to thank everyone here for sharing their enjoyment of this game. We'd received mixed reviews when it came out, mostly because of the game's "limited use" of historical player stats. So for all of us who worked on it, your praise is very, very appreciated. For most of us, MLB feat KGB (or 'KGB' as we called the project) was the first released videogame in our careers, and quite a trial-by-fire. So I have to also give a huge thank you to the whole Angel Studios family...it was the time of my life!! Even more thanks to founder and former CEO Diego Angel, who took a chance on a bunch of n00bs, and somehow persuaded Nintendo to keep the project afloat. You're a mad, mad genius. I f'ing love ya man!
That’s so cool!! You know this game was a HUGE part of my childhood. In fact, it was this specific game that got me interested in computer programming! My dad was a software engineer and I remember asking him like “how do they do that?” - I started thinking in my head constantly about how certain features would be programmed, and that’s when I really got a grip on the idea of conditionals or if/then statements, before I ever wrote a line of code. My dad ended up giving me a book on programming in C and that was the start of it for me. It’s so cool to just hear someone who worked on it talk about it! What language was the game primarily programmed in? What graphics software was used?
I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, and watched Mariner games all the time, even in the off season. I was obsessed with baseball and obsessed with this game. Thanks for providing hours of enjoyment during some really awkward times in my life.
I spent more total time(because of the season mode) on this game than any game after. including gta and other sandbox games with online modes.... the pace of the game and the exceptional batting experience made this the best baseball game I've ever played.
By far, KGJ Baseball is the greatest baseball game ever made! 2nd place goes to NCAA baseball on the PS2 (not sure if that's the actual name of it but it's the only college baseball game ever made, I think). 3rd place goes to just plain old Baseball on the original Gameboy (and now I feel old).
Call me, call me, call me “Junior!” - LOL when I was a kid playing this game I had no idea what he was actually saying. I thought was saying like “homie homie homie...”
Wow, I remember spending a lot of time obsessing on getting those opening screens to display along with the opening music along with KGJ's opening welcome. I know that most people skip that part, but I wanted it to be just right. I still watch that section over and over... Call me crazy, or call me Junior. ;-)
Awe man I miss this game, I used to play this game religiously. Me and my friend Dustin were super good at it, I could always beat him though lol. This is such a good game.
Does anyone else remember that there was a code that would make Griffey hit a homer as long as you made contact? He even called his shot like The Babe. It was awesome!
I loved playing this game growing up. I didn't realize it but you are absolutely right: the arcade style made the game more wholesome. For some reason Danny Tartabull always led the league in triples and I always needed Darren Erstad on my team. Good times.
In the summer of 98, I played this game every day and all day. Loved it. I miss those days. Being 20 years old. Wow. Time flies. I purchased a sealed version a few years ago and had it graded by wata. This game has a special place in my heart.
The best part is that this was released in the 1998 season AKA the Yankees' best season ever, and it features that legendary lineup. Only problem is that its out of order.
Ehhhh half agree.... A lot of the time I found that if you trade two crappy players for one really good one, you can keep going that method until you have an all-star squad.
Get Chili Davis and Jose Canseco. You can trade both of them for a great player, then the other team drops them, so you can get them back and repeat the process.

This was back then when I was still playing little league baseball! In 1995, I was playing for the Mariners! My baseball history influenced me to pick up this game!! And this game was really fun to play!
Played the whole season back in the days. W/Dodgers I (Piazza) had a HR duel With Big Mac❤ fondest memory for the love of the game!!! Ps. Im pretty sure i beat out Big Mac for most homeruns which was at least over 65-70 jacks 💪
Bro banjo I can still hear those different thene musics in my head it had some really great music just like zelda ocarina of time or like donkey Kong for super Nintendo I was born 1990
There is one historical easter egg in the game where if you play with less than 30 teams in a season and game puts the Milwaukee Brewers in the American League.
My greatest achievement in my life is playing as the Mariners and going undefeated for a season. Griffey hit like 200 homeruns. Only used the cheat if down and need to win.
I remember my uncle came in the room when I was playing this when I was about 7 and he said something like "wow I thought this was real life at first, how good are these graphics getting?"
Last time i heard that intro, i was 11 and at my aunts house for the summer. Id be playing this game at 7 in the morning on their big screen tv. Times were so much simpler back then. Im 35 now. Idk where the time went.
All these years later, I've set out to finally complete an entire season with a perfect record. I'm currently on Aug 20, so I'm getting close. Since I am a master of this game, I've made some self-imposed rules to make it more challenging. I drafted all "poor" players or small circles with low overall ratings both hitters and batters alike. No resetting. No trades. It has been quite the challenge. Anyone who has actually made it past the all-star break knows the difficulty increases in the later months. I've had 3-4 very close calls, but still no L's. Cheers to anyone still playing this game in late 2024! PS. My normal starting lineup is: Chuck Carr CF Tony Graffanino SS Joe Vitiello RF Ozzie Timmons LF Herbert Perry 1B Lenny Webster C Andy Stankiewicz 3B Pat Listach 2B Pitcher (DH is off for added difficulty and the need to PH)
So many memories of playing this game as a kid. The cheats you just described just blew my mind! lol If I only had the internet back then. I really regret giving away my N64 away 15 years ago. Luckily my in-laws still have my wife's. Time to buy this game on eBay and play with my kids when they're old enough.
For those who liked this game back in the day, check out RBI Baseball 20. It's actually good this year. No, it's not The Show, but more fun imo. Def has the Ken Griffey Jr N64 arcade feel.
Bro i had this game for N64 in 1999 i never knew about the cheats but i did have zelda ocarina of time n 007 and southpark for southpark the cheat code bobby bird gave you everything
The only other video game series I would put next to this is MVP baseball 2004-05 games. Those were ahead of their time. Between those two, this and Griffey Jr slugfest that was my childhood to teenage years. Haven't played any baseball games since. Mlb the show is 🚮

i really did enjoyed playing this game with my older brother in our younger days, it was awesome! thanks for your efforts
this game is a never forgettable memory of playing with my older brothers
ah man i had so much fun playing this when i was a kid. Pure nostalgia
Hearing that "hi I'm Ken Griffey Jr let's play Major League Baseball" again just threw me wayyy back great video bro
Haven’t heard that in about 10+ years, when i tell you i felt some type of way inside, playing with my friends, wow 😭😢
Hahaha
“Nice catch kid”
Likewise
slow summer day nostalgia in 1999 early 2000
Epic times man
You explained that perfectly
Exactly!! I can relate I also feel the same way when I got banjo kazooie in the summer of 99! 🎮🕹️🎮
That intro is the most nostalgic thing ever. I haven’t heard it for over 10 years!
Me and my buddy played the shit out this game lmao! ITS GO TIME!
Over 25 years for me
Awesome to see ANYONE talking about this game in 2018. A staple of my childhood.

That was my favorite part no joke

Those character models are pretty damn impressive for the time tbh.
I love the pitcher shaking his head in resignation after giving up a HR
Does anyone else remember that there was a code that would make Griffey hit a homer as long as you made contact? He even called his shot like The Babe. It was awesome!
LL-RRR-LL on the D Pad
I always remember that saying "Going Going Gone"
My dad used to play this faithfully

Wow. You gave me flashbacks watching this. My god. I so vividly remember playing this exact game as a kid. Lol
W.O.W. that intro IMMEDIATELY took me back 20 years ago!! the nostalgia is veryyy real!

oh man, this brings back old memories! oh lord! I was so excited watching this video!
So many hours as a kid on this game, you could def run up the score. My goal was to get to 100 runs in a game but I always fell short around 85
Done it. It only flashes your score as 99 when you cross home plate though :(
Good old days of going 162-0 with the Rangers
Yo I just found your channel! Great stuff!
The best part is that this was released in the 1998 season AKA the Yankees' best season ever, and it features that legendary lineup. Only problem is that its out of order.
I spend so much time making trades on this game because it's actually realistic in the way it works
Ehhhh half agree.... A lot of the time I found that if you trade two crappy players for one really good one, you can keep going that method until you have an all-star squad.

My favorite n64 sports game.
Childhood memories drag me back.
My friend was a big part in making this game, and I’m not even kidding ... He’s happy people are getting joy from it ...
That's awesome! Tell him thanks for making such an amazing game that still holds up 20+ years later.
Swiss Cheese Gaming ... 👍
This is the game sports game of all time

If I were a pro-wrestler, I'd get the cheering soundbite, the "yeah yeah, woo woo! C'mon!" crowd cheering, included in my walkout music.
I used to rent this out a couple of times back in the day. Always was a blast playing it.
Same dude. I hated baseball irl, but this game was an exception. I got an extreme surge of nostalgia seeing this again 💗
God the Mariners were so busted in this. ARod hit circle was great but Griffey’s literally seemed like the whole batters box. Love it
Martinez was gigantic too
Loved this game , I can’t believe use to play 162 game long season .
Remember buying this the day it came out. This and Banjo Kazooie was my entire summer in 1998
Bro banjo I can still hear those different thene musics in my head it had some really great music just like zelda ocarina of time or like donkey Kong for super Nintendo I was born 1990
I gotta grab a copy of this for my n64 sometime! Lots of good times as a kid!
There is one historical easter egg in the game where if you play with less than 30 teams in a season and game puts the Milwaukee Brewers in the American League.
They were in the American League that season.
Best mlb game.
That music omg

Wow. Been 16 or 17 years since I’ve seen and heard this
I remember when the stance emptied when it's a blowout

I'm pretty sure IRL they used Thunderstruck when he hit a home run (same as every Mariners player though)
The presentation of this game was so slick, especially for an N64 game. I loved the batting system.
Sausage Fingers still holds up
I don't remember why but I'd always be the angels and recall hitting as Vlad Guerrero a lot in this game!

Only baseball game I truly enjoyed playing the hell out of

The game is fun multiplayer, but enragingly frustrating against cpu
Am I crazy for remembering that opening theme in a different key?
i wish this had a stat that showed how many hours i played this....DAYS!!

Impressive.
This game and the one for the snes are literally 2 of the best baseball games of all time.

So cool a official MLB video game officially published by Nintendo before Sony PlayStation’s MLB franchise
Play as the reds and put Deion Sanders in the starting lineup at leadoff hitter. You’re welcome.
This and bases loaded 2 on nes are my favorite baseball games
I miss baseball games like this, not everything needs to be realistic simulation. I enjoyed the Bigs series as wel
