Thank you for sharing. It seems that you and your neighbors recognize the advantages of employing this system. In Illinois, USA (2924) we still have street litter and alley trash (though our alleys are lined with dumpsters, trash carts and recycling carts). We have a low participation level for recycling. We also have independent businesses (junkers or pickers) that prowl the alleys and pick up scrap metal (which they sell).
In addition to not wasting resources, like metal, rare earth elements, and energy (burnable waste), environmental protection was the other reason to end the landfill system. A landfill area is basically polluted for the foreseeable future, and in the worst case scenario it could lead to toxins in the ground water. All kinds of pests also thrived in landfills. Paper recycling has been going on for a really long time in Finland, but I reckon it's the same for most of the world. The bottle return system is also quite old. As far as I can remember, it has existed. Personally I always liked to think it was created to reduce the amount of broken glass bottles on roads and in nature. They are nasty and dangerous. Biowaste is these days used to produce gas for traffic. That's quite nice. I read in some parts of the world where people put most of the waste in a single container, there are actually facilities that go through all that mixed waste and separate metals and such away from it, for recycling. Since also in Finland there are some stubborn people who refuse to sort the different types of garbage, it's hard to say which system is more efficient, but probably pre-sorting does have big benefits.
Thanks for the input. I understand that in some countries trash is being processed later...but imagine that persons job?! Of course they might have it automated to some extent, but human labor is definitely involved. I think it less disgusting to go through own trash and separate it, then someone else does it weeks later..
@@gpsfamilyjournal7036 Yeah. Though even in Finland there has to be monitoring. You have to check what goes into the trash burning facility furnaces to ensure they operate appropriately. Biowaste has to be checked for plastic. Recycled plastic itself can't contain certain types of plastics. Paper recycling process will be ruined if there's something else than paper in it. Glass recycling only works for certain glass types. Metal needs to be sorted for the different kinds of metal (iron, aluminium, etc). But yeah, the more pre-sorting, the more efficient the processes will be.
Extremely useful, thank you! I haven't returned any of my Pantti bottles yet because I wasn't sure of how to do it in the stores (I just kept them in a bag at home).
I came from Spain, we recycled Tetra Pak to the plastic. Here in Finland they recycle as carton? That’s so strange and cool learn how to recycling in Finland....
Hi! And welcome to Finland! I totally see why Tetra Pak could count as plastic. It’s a hard one. There is carton, metal and plastic in some of them. But I guess the way they process is at the plant is different. It would be really cool to go for excursion one day and learn about the process.

Loving positive comments!
You are so full of roska
Правильное решение. К порядку надо приучать с детства.
Hello mam i want job waste garbage collection in Finland
So you are not allowed to throw away plastic (soda, water) bottles in the plastic waste bins (Muovipakkaukset) ?
It is allowed, but doing so would be a waste of money, since you'd lose your deposit.
Красавица наша!
Pravda!
