    I am curious. Why is it that many educated Europeans are more articulate in English than many Americans for whom English is a first language?

    • @sampohonkala4195
      @sampohonkala4195 4 месяца назад +108

      Alexander Stubb may be an exception (from a bilingual Finnish and Swedish speaking family, fluent also in English, German and French, speaks some Italian), but in most cases Europeans need people in the lead that can communicate in several European languages or at least can speak decent English. Finnish president leads the foreign policy and has little power in anything else, so one reason for Stubb to win the tight election may have been that he was expected to communicate well and use his skills to serve his country. In Finland the second language, most often English, starts on grade 1 for everyone, and therefore there are kids that are close to fluency before they turn 15.

    • @hanshansen3885

      @sampohonkala4195 Alexander Stubb is not an exception in terms of english skills. All scandinavians are very good at english. As you mention yourself, they start english classes very early in school.

      @@hanshansen3885 Stubb is not a Scandinavian, he is a Finn... I think he is somewhat of an exception, though, as he got his bachelor's degree in the US and his wife is from England. For a Finnish politician he also communicates well in general. Sanna Marin had something of the same quality in Finnish; both make their opinions extremely clear - good and bad opinions alike.

    • @hanshansen3885
      @hanshansen3885 4 месяца назад +12

      @sampohonkala4195 Technical you are correct but many also include Finland in Scandinavia. There are strong ethnolinguistics differences between Finland and the rest of the scandinavia but in most other ways Finland is very connected and similar to them.
      Again, I disagree with your assessment.

      Sadly, most US citizens don't get a very good education, because people have to pay a lot for it. That means that the US is not supporting their poor kids that want to learn. What a waste! I was shocked to hear that when a child is born in the US the family starts a savings account for his-her education! Schooling is free or nearly free in Europe.

      @alphalance9408 all the countries that border Russia follow the US very uncomplicated agenda. Finland used to be neutral and co-existed peacefully with Russia for many decades after ww2: economic trade, social prosperity. It’s all over now. Finland has decided to be an anti-Russia country for no particular reason even in a much more extreme way than the Baltic states: closure of border, illegal seizure of Russian state assets, ban of Russian cars and confiscation of assets from civilians who were crossing the border when it was open. This all constitutes casus belli. It’s naive to think that it will go without a response or that the US especially under Trumps administration is going to uphold this or that NATO’s article 5 can be validated in the event of casus belli. Finland is walking on the edge of abyss. Big time.

      @@Ebaniovo Everything has a reason. People have the right to dislike Russia and not want to have any relations with it. There is no such obligation to love Russia. I may not like many things in America, but in America I can say so, and if I do so in Russia, I may fall out of a window "for no particular reason", be poisoned, my transport may crash, etc. I can say that I hate America, and America will not come to my house and force me to love it. But Russia will, because it is a rapist by nature. If you like it, if you don't like it, bear it, my beauty,' as their Tsar said. When Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, I was talking to a Russian woman. She really could not understand why the Ukrainians were defending themselves. As she explained to me, the violence had to be endured because if you fight back, it will only get worse. It is the most disgusting thing I have ever heard. Later I heard the same thing from other Russians. I think that the Finns, the Baltic peoples and others who had to deal with the Russians just tolerated it, but now they can no longer stand it. And they are right. You can't let perverts into your life.

      Where does it says in the Bd. Mem. that Ukraine has a white check to pursue ethnic cleansing? And to join NATO? which was supposed at the time of concluding the Memorandum to remain in the 1991 borders where the Russian USSR leader Gorbachev agreed on the reunification of Germany with the expansion of NATO into the Eastern part of Germany. How long an agreement has validity? Internal laws are subject to change or modify and, international treaties also. Russia did not withdraw from the Memorandum, its provisions are still active, except the Russian speaking population does not want to be cleansed and thus, do not want to be governed by Kyiv, it is a simple fact from which, those who did not agreed, went to a campaign of ethnic cleansing under the "fog" of an "anti-terrorist campaign". You can see what does terrorism: blows up civilian public buildings, blows up civilian public buildings and infrastructure in other cities of other countries or in the capital city, AlQaida remember? So, the Kyiv Gov. mocked the notion of terrorist activities by falsely claiming an independence movement is terrorism, while another continuation of the same governments blew up Nord Stream, which is pure terrorism. So, the French Revolution for instance, was terrorism (and yea, if it would not have succeeded, it certainly was), also the US Revolution for Independence was a terrorist activity, no? By the moment when, the Bd. Mem, will not be repudiated by Russia in full, read its provisions and you will see that they are functioning, but Kyiv blended its provisions with the international provisions of the UN Charter and invaded Russia, so this may give a pretext for Russia. The US did obey the international law when it attacked Iraq in 2003? Were there any US settlers or citizens shelled by artillery or abducted?

    Finland has more skin in the game, being closer to the war zone. Many of the European nations know too well the casualties of war. This can and will be a hard peace to negotiate. No country should try to dominate another through war. Ideals, morality, humility needs to take precedence. A piece of land is just that, no less, no more. The sooner we figure that out and whether we like someone or do not cannot play into any peace negotiation. Everyone needs to be held accountable, individuals as well as nations for any crimes committed against humanity. No exceptions. The world body needs to stand together as a whole in this fight. Which form of governing each nation chooses is of their own but, through not so much a world order but that of a world precedence of humility for all, so long as individuals are not repressed of their freedoms, we can only hope the deliverance of peace can be maintained by all.
