Thank you for sharing. It seems that you and your neighbors recognize the advantages of employing this system. In Illinois, USA (2924) we still have street litter and alley trash (though our alleys are lined with dumpsters, trash carts and recycling carts). We have a low participation level for recycling. We also have independent businesses (junkers or pickers) that prowl the alleys and pick up scrap metal (which they sell).

I think it's so RUDE when people laugh at others trying to learn a new language! I had a similar experience in a language school but it was the opettaja (teacher) who laughed at me. Good on you for sticking to your guns and picking up Finnish!

Did you happen to figure out some of the criterion? I'm from the U.S. and we have some good supermarkets, but I don't mind regular ones. Maybe, the quality of the bread, imported cheeses, more organic produce at the really nice ones. Like one chain from NY state, called Wegman's. HEB and Whole Foods. The English link in your description box is dead. I'd like to see if there are more in the top 30 to try out on my travels.

I hope your family has been doing well. This is one of the channels I found during the lock downs early in the pandemic that, as I live alone and have no family, made the 6 months of loneliness bearable. I have a little observation that might amuse you especially - we can call it the architecture of Finnish education - when people's schools (kansankoulu) started, the children were taught at home or in home-like buildings, even in towns (example Sirkkalagatans folkskola in Turku), then schools started to mimic rich houses, or palaces, with ornaments and pillars outside (example: Flicklyceet i Helsingfors - opposite Ekbergs konditori in the Bouleward in Helsinki), then schools in the 1960-1970's turned into factories, which was thought utterly functional - fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaisaaren_koulu - efficiency was the word for the day. And now play-ground and social skills are much more emphasized. Rightly so!

Just think about it, once Finland was so poor and there were so many problems, like in a 3. world country. Now things have improved very much. In 1938 the first free practical baby&mother boxes were distributed. As a condition the mother had to visit the Neuvola - a place for getting healthcare advice from special nurses and doctors, to secure the best possible start for the coming kid. In the 1960's OECD noted that Finland hadn't much riches of any kind to build development on (I think that hurt Finns' feelings a little) so they concluded that Finland's only real hope for progress was education! But Finland's government took the advice seriously and education improved rapidly. In the 1950's in Helsinki it was not unusual that schools were so few and crowded, that children went to school half the day in two shifts, morning and evening respectively, so the classrooms and teachers could be used to the fullest, and so that every child had the chance to have education. The youngest kids would walk 3 km to school but olderkids would have 5 km to walk before they were eligible for school-bus-tickets. In 1970's university studies were free of fees, if you could pass the entrance tests or had good grades enough - still you had to pay for your own living costs. But to make it possible for everybody there were bank-loans with lower interest rate, and the state stood for the security. If you had neglected your studies, you would not get a loan for the following term... So a student's parents needed not to pay anything.
