It's so great you visited Matosinhos instead of a big city like Lisbon, Porto or Faro.. People sometimes forget about the other cities and there is great food all around the country :p
I've seen several shows about portuguese cuisine and yet all summed up does not represent even half of its variety meat dishes, fish, seafood, dishes only with vegetables, with lots of fruits (typical in Madeira, a archipelago) and all can be grilled, stewed, fried, roasted, steamed or any other way you can imagine it (like a dish with bread and fish, or/and seafood, similar to Hot Pot) there's great variety of soups, including one made by cooking a rock with the other ingredients, one on which you mix with cold water or red wine and eat it cold on hotter days or even stinging nettle soup (for those who don't know its a plant that causes itching when touched but it's okay to eat it after well prepared) there's also a great and delicious variety of canned, preserved (smoked, salted, dried) food and cheese, in fact most of the secrets of the traditional dishes is the quality of the ingredients but even with all of that there's something that has never been fetured to great loss of the shows hosts, and that would be traditional pastry like the rest there's a large variety for all tastes, from extra sweet to lighter lavors made with cheese and other ingredients, from cakes to creamy sweets, etc... there's still so much no one has showed before, born in a small country with over 1200 years of history and also being Europe oldest country (the only country in Europe which its borders have remained unchanged for over 800 years, all along only being known as Portugal)
i had a excellent breakfast in Portugal. Made my way to Barcelona than back to Portugal. i hada very good day eating all types of food. had a scare in Barcelona, got through it with no International Incident. thank goodness because i was very hungry.
A cara do gajo da Sandman quando o apresentador lhe diz que podia acompanhar porto com comida, hahah, tipo, "vou ser educado e dizer que sim, mas isso é blasfémia" hahaha
«Better late than never., Matthew Henry Been to NJ and NY and I wish I met you there: fortunately you met my country, which is a far better deal for both.
There is a tendency, for restaurants located at the shore of oceans, to add more salt than it is otherwise needed, far from the oceans. The extra salt is necessary to help humans retain water.
Tony Branco it's called flavour and Portuguese food is known to have it since its birth. if your worries about high cholesterol high pressure and so on,cut the salt entirely, infact stick to English food or the Baltic countries they have no flavour in their food.lol sorry.
That is not a correct statement. Drugs are not legal in Portugal. The use of drugs is not considered a crime. It's difficult to understand, but in Portugal you can use drugs but you cannot buy or sell them. If you are caught by the police using drugs, you will not be arrested. Instead you will be taken to a commission where they will evaluate your addiction and advice on a way to get treated. You will then have to report back at scheduled times so they can check your progress. If you don't report back, you will get fined.
Although I love this show, I am not down with cooking pigs that are two years old. We should have more respect for animals and at least let them live a longer life.
Shut the fuck up you old ass geezer. Human beings are put on this earth to protect and live by example. If we are going to eat animals, it needs to be done in a respectable manner. It should not be hard to understand that eating babies is disgusting.
You're still stupid like before! You are right, and it is better to leave the pigs, cows, oxen, goats, etc ... die of old age! Oh, and let the chickens grow old until they have teeth.
maybe you're right. But this is a bit difficult if you work twelve hours a day, and you spend another hour and a half at the club each day. But maybe you should see yourself in the mirror! Maybe a young man who should be working or studying, but instead is wasting time with a middle-aged guy who's in the bathroom exchanging stupid comments with some fool.
nacht98 It is also, along with or wine, considered to be the fastest growing. The reason you get critics say such bad things is simple. They are paid to. In the 1980's the EU paid the Portuguese government to stop producing things such as, wine, fish, olive oil, tomatoes, oranges etc. Why? because countries such as France, Italy and Spain could not compete in regards to the quality of the produce coming from Portugal. Our government took the money and sold the country down the drain...the result? all our top produce stays in Portugal and you can get it for 10% of what you would pay in any other country :)
Luis Gorgulho this is so true. For exemple I lkive in alentejo a region in the south that is mostly agricultural. In the past years many "farms" were bougth by spanish people, bey brought their olive trees destroing our olive trees, why? Because spanish olive trees give more olives and at a faster rate but the downside is that the quality is low and in 5 years they mees up the soil. But why do they do this? Profit, Its quantity vs quality. But what really pisses me of is that the world thinks spanis olive oil is the best in the world but what they dont know is that its made with portuguese olivesw from our olive trees not the spanish
+João Viegas The problem is that Spain is a brand that sells really well...everyone loves Spain in UK and probably Portugal does't sell well, peolple don't want to buy portugal, cause it has a low profile. It´s not a very known and popular county. I eat lot of Spanish food, but never heard of Portugal's until recently
nacht98 is a question of marketing not quality, we have products from spain and taste like shit compared with ours, the fruits is a good example, take an apple from spain and eat with pell and you feel the chemical taste in your mouth because the big producers put nail polish to shine and have a good visual aspect, many producers in Portugal don't put that shit, and many quality products that you eat from Spain come from Portugal, because many spanish companies buy our products to process in their country.

Outstanding...WOW
Mike, you are a lucky dude, to be in Matosinhos eating Earth's best sea food. Cheers!
Loved Matosinhos !!!
The man looks amazing for 56.. I wonder if he knows/ ever worked with Bourdain??
Bacalhau no mesmo prato que caldo verde, that's a new one.
Também fui apanhado de surpresa com essa. E o caldo verde pareceu-me demasiado grosso.
Interesting stuff!
Doug Tarnopol Hey, do you have the second part? I can't find it. :)
Italian, Spanish and Portuguese are very similar
no we are not
To many time the same error, "Quinta dos Crasto"
Too many Portuguese cooks over salt their food. Otherwise if the food is cooked properly then it's good.

Portuguese food was recently considered the worst in the world, trying to understand why. maybe it's too bland
nacht98 only a critic made that regard and that critic sucks ass
