I am fortunate to live there for 6 months of the year then back To Mid Wales in uk another beautiful place but it does not compare with Portugal Go visit it will become a lifelong friend to all who choose to venture there

Good program! I thoroughly enjoyed my four days in Lisboa. I visited and attended mass in the Se (Cathedral) of Lisboa and visited some other churches, but unfortunately not the two Rick went to. I'd also recommend the National Archaeology Museum that's connected to Mosteiro do Jeronimos. I especially liked it because it had native ancient Lusitanian artifacts; I don't go to Portugal to see artifacts I can see in their native lands or other museums around the world. I don't understand why all these travel shows do taxis though. The metro is a more rewarding, cheaper and authentic way of travelling, and I had no problem going anywhere in Lisboa using the metro (including close to the Gulbenkian Museum where Rick went to). Get out and mingle with the locals!
Going to Lisbon next year :)

Thanks Rick for the video. I was watching a video on Lisbon but half way in I clicked on yours, which is more informative and interesting.
I was taken to the Algarve as child in 1971, well before it was paved over. It looked to me like most people did not own cars, but got around on mopeds and donkey carts. Life was very sleepy and backwards. Away from the coast towards the interior there was nothing at all. 50% of the cars were VWs.

You have got to remember even at 241 years old the USA is still in its infancy where Europe is thousands and thousands years old.

Fun Fact: Lisbon is the second oldest capital in Europe, just behind Athens in Greece. And half a millennium (500) years older than Rome! It is also the ONLY European capital on the Atlantic!
It's ancient name "Olissipo" as the legend says was named for Ulysses, who founded the settlement after he left Troy to escape the Greek coalition. Mentioned also as "Olisippo" by Pliny "The Elder" and Olissipona by Greeks! ;-)

I once saw a good documentary on TV about Portugal. It was saying that the Portuguese (the Porra Porras :-) ) have a yearning for their seafaring days. It was part of their culture, part of their identity.
Portugal also had a dictator, Salazar. As a result, the resulting government ruled until 1974. It also caused Portugal to be very isolated. So, Portuguese people from Angola and Mozambique knew much more about the outside world.

Fun fact: Portuguese LAGOS is where the name of the Nigerian LAGOS came from! The biggest city in Africa as it's roots in this small and lovely place. African Lagos was founded by Portuguese in the late 1400's!

Fantastic video regarding some of the history of Portugal. However, I’m a master historian and those in the medieval world did not believe that the earth was flat, that was clearly known and protested since the ancient time of Eratosthenes in the 3rd century BCE.

As part of a tour, they took us to CARRIAGES MUSEUM. i mean, it was interesting to see the development of CARRIAGES, but...I guess there are no Goya, Velazquez, Greco, Picasso From Portugal. It is house in another building now

Given Ricks activism I'm surprised he didn't mention Portugal's common sense drug policy. Its the best on the planet. *Everything* has been decriminalized, you know much like the entirety of human history before the 20th century when people ingested what they want and civilization progressed just fine.

Geedi1977 In Brasil we have a rich culture and Skyscrapers but violence rates are huge, mainly in crimes that is caused by drug trafficking.
Geedi1977 Some cities in Brazil still have historical architecture, that we can see some cities that looks like Portugal, but we have other European influence in our old architecture because immigration of Hollandese, Germany and Italian. Brazil is a Frankstein appearance, that we can see beautiful cities like Gramado, Canela, and mixed ugly and beautiful in same city like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Recife. My city Natal was colonized by Holland, but after was conquered by Portuguese and we can still see some buildings that looks like Portuguese and Hollandese in historical neighborhoods.

Lagos in the Algarve is a must-see; quaint fishing towns and beaches like Ponta de Piedad or Benagil are incredible. Loved my time in Portugal and southern Spain and can't wait to head back to Spain from the US this summer!
