The thing to know about punk rock is that it usually has a message beyond some pop bubble gum bullshit that you get with other music genres. Usually the message is some kind of social commentary, the entire movement stemmed from dissatisfaction with society and a desire to evolve it from its tired traditions and worn out attitudes. One could critique punk for being a little bit myopic based upon the fact that it was a little to white and middle class but it had the best of intentions.
