Funny you post this now… I just got into this song in the past two weeks. This and Astro Zombies are both so catchy and incredible. There’s a great ukulele cover everyone should hear of Last Caress as well.
Well I’m glad the timing worked out! Thanks for watching! I appreciate it! Astro Zombies is a good one!! So many catchy songs! The ukulele version sounds interesting!! Have a good one! Cheers, Jon
Glenn's greatest gift is songwriting. Then 't now. Ya nailed it. Misfits are simple energy with a killer songwriter. With a strong point of view and style. Misfits rule
It took me awhile to accept the "Jerry Only" era Misfits. However, after all this time, I think "Famous Monsters" is a 5 out of 5 record and would go so far as saying that some of these songs (like "Descending Angels") are just as good as their classic output. Gotta admit, "Hybrid Moments" is probably my Misfits jam. Great analysis! Don't doubt yourself. Anyone who listens to this stuff as much as you (or any of us collectors for that matter) is a scholar in my book. Salute!
Hey Hellion! I’ve never gave that later Misfits a chance. I really should rectify that!! I will definitely check out Famous Monsters. Thanks! Yes Hybrid Moments is a top track for sure!! By the way, I certainly don’t feel like a scholar! Haha! I know a good amount about music, but everyday I will be humbled by people who know so much more or know things I have no idea about! Just your videos alone, you show so much I’ve never heard of, and there’s dozens more on the RUclips who do the same!! Thanks for watching brother! Appreciate the recommendation and the comment!! Cheers, Jon
As always, awesome video Jon. I love your takes! You should definitely make more! My take on the Misfits is that the reason they are considered punk is attributed to what differentiated them from anything going on at the time. They juxtaposed sloppy, fast, fuzzy riffs with dark B-movie/Comic lyrics with Doo-Wop/Girl Group/ Elvis vocals all wrapped within their gothic looks. That very notion was punk in of itself. Similar to why the Stooges and even the Cramps are often lumped into the “punk” genre (I prefer just Rock & Roll). With that said, I actually would “categorize” The Misfits into Outsider Music. After-all, all genres have a broad spectrum. Cheers from the PWN and say hi to the lady! Hope y’all are well. 🍻
Hey Jess! Thanks for watching! Yes you are correct, the Misfits are definitely a punk band! I was trying to say they are a bit more than just punk. Almost can’t categorize them. Like you suggested, almost an outsider artist band! I do think it’s all under the umbrella of Rock’n’Roll, and believe it or not I don’t like putting bands into boxes or categories, but I like debating about it or discussing it for fun. In the grand scheme all the sub genres are pretty much unimportant. Thanks for your comments and observations! I enjoyed reading them!! Hope you’re doing well!! Have a great week! Cheers, Jon
I always love seeing what records you have behind you Jon. As usual some rippers, Two Tone, Dead Moon & the Kinks. I also love a man with a strong opinion who has a good argument to back it re: your 10 year prediction. You always have an interesting angle in your vid's mate that makes me go & pull out the records and I then hear them in a fresh way. The Misfits took me a long time to give a chance to because of the Metallica association made me think they were metal at first. I was amazed at how incredibly catchy and hook laden their songs were, especially when Danzig was fronting them. They're definitely way more musical than most of the punk bands of their era. That is a fair point about bold opening lines in great songs. It's more about making a musical statement than people thinking it's going to bring down society ha, ha! The chorus was what sold Last Caress to me for sure. It's perfect and gets you by surprise after the wild lyrics that proceed it. That was fascinating your take on when & where Glen Danzig was born had a lot to do with where that sound came from. A whole lot of completely different influences to your average punk band. The Italian working class experience sounds like a fair point to me. The first wave of punk (UK & US) to me were way more hepped up rock 'n roll bands than what the codified punk sound became. Great stuff mate. Cheers...Ben
Hey Ben!! Thanks for watching and your well thought out responses!! Your comment about the bold opening lines gives me an idea that that would be a cool video topic to do!! Yes, the original punk bands were certainly more rooted in RnR than what was to come! In fact 45 years later its hard to distinguish some original punk bands from the straight RnR bands before them. Very similar except for the song titles. And as always, take my opinions and exaggerated statements with a grain of salt. Just here for fun! Thanks again! Have a great rest of your week!! Cheers, Jon
Recently heard this song while listening to 70s and 80s punk for the first time; I've been obsessed with its music and lyrics, thanks for this video, it's exactly what I was looking for!
This was a really good video John. I love the Danzig era Misfits. That song was my intro due to Metallica. Once I heard Walk Among Us i was hooked. That opening line is certainly memorable. Another striking line ive always loved is from Welsh Psychobilly band Demented Are Go. Try this for a line "Lookin' up the crevice of an unborn child, the blood and the afterbirth do drive me wild". Its a great song called Born on a busted Hymen. Give it a try.
Thanks Mikey! Really appreciate you stopping by! Glad you got a kick out of this one. Half music theory and half bullshit! Haha! I know the Demented are Go for sure! Definitely don’t remember that tune you mentioned! That’s quite the lyric for sure!! That Sparky was completely out of his mind!! A real RnR character!! Have a great week brother!! Cheers, Jon
Lots to agree with here. They put out an incredible collection of timeless tunes in a fairly short period of time. Best ever? I don’t know if I’d say that, but they are certainly top tier and in the conversation and they got there with much less money/label support/recording technology than anyone else in the running. Glenn’s vocals are beautiful and passionate and certainly recall the rock’n’roll sounds that came before them. I still believe them to be a punk band as that is the time/place/scene they came from but unlike some punk bands who could have only existed in the punk scene, certain bands like Misfits & Ramones were making timeless music that could have worked in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s up until the present. The arrangements of the instruments may have varied slightly depending what decade you throw them into, but the combination of those certain chords with the vocal melodies are undeniable testaments of rock’n’roll magic. Last Caress is an amazing example, but what makes this band so special is that their 78-81 era is full of songs of similar quality. I believe their lyrics will always hold them back from receiving the mainstream attention and acclaim that they deserve which will keep them out of The mainstream Beach Boys/Beatles/Spector conversation, but I can’t disagree with you that they put together an incredible songbook that stands the test of time and will likely grow in its glory as time goes on. Cool video, lots to think about. Great band….Still love me some Beach Boys though…if the future generations forget about pet sounds, etc…they are missing out!
Wow! Yorpshard!! You summed it up perfectly!! I agree with everything you said and you said it way more eloquently than I could I ever do!! Yes, the Misfits are absolutely a punk band! No argument. I throw some exaggerated views and opinions out there on purpose. I often speak in hyperbole to make a point. Take what I say with a grain of salt. Everything I talk about is usually “the best’ or “the worst’ with no middle ground. Haha! I think a point I failed to make was I feel Danzig has a kinship to and follows more in the footsteps of Jim Morrison, Ozzy, Elvis and the fifties vocalist than to the Johnny Rottens, Joe Strummers and all the early 80s punk contemporaries. Not so much that they weren’t a punk band. If that makes sense. Thanks for watching! And I really appreciate your response! Exactly the sort of thing I was hoping for. It’s easy for me to start talking BS if no one is up there with me pushing back! Haha! Have a great week brother!! Cheers, Jon
I'm sure we've talked about it already, but all of Danzig's projects have pigeon holed into a genre. I get why they went with punk for the Misfits...fast, agro, rock and roll. They did the same with Samhain, and Danzig. Danzig has never been a metal band, always more heavy blues rock...of course his industrial album Blackacidevil throws a wrench into the argument, but you get me , hahaha. Great video.
Yeah Steve! You get what I’m trying to say. I’m not best at explaining my thoughts. I generally don’t like putting bands in categories, but it’s always fun for discussion and debates. You are so right about his solo albums being completely different, yet he remained the same. Obviously the Misfits are a punk band. I can’t read Danzig’s mind, but I feel his whole persona and style of performance is way closer to Jim Morrison, Ozzy and 68 Comeback Elvis than it is to Johnny Rotten, Joe Strummer or any of the 70s/80s punk singers. Thanks for watching this one. A bit over the top, but it was just for fun! Have a great week!! See ya around!! Cheers!!
Loved this. Misfits are an enigma to me. Glenn Danzig is certainly a singular performer. Almost a genre all to himself. As you say great rock 'n roll however you label it.
JOHN!!! GREAT VIDEO!! IT HAS BEEN WAY TOO LONG SINCE I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO LISTEN IN!! I am super happy to be able to watch this channel again. The Misfits were probably ....and almost still are.....in my top ten of favorite bands of all time. HOrror films were my first love, I suppose. ANYTHING monster related was initally on my radar. SO while many kids loved Batman and GI Joe, Transformers, and the like....I was getting old monster toys and magazines from garage sales and bankruptcy/estate sales and such. I just absolutely loved monster movies/horror films. When the Misfits came along, I felt like I had found the holy grail of my interests combined. This is a great video, and I appreciate your input on everything.
Hey Fletch! Good to see ya! Hope you’re doing well! Cool you were into horror and monsters stuff! I’m not big into that stuff, but I love flipping through those old horror mags with the B&W photos and behind the scenes shots. When I was a teen we were way into horror and slasher films and like you said, the Misfits fit perfectly in that world alongside our favorite metal bands. Thanks for stopping by and giving your story and views in the comments! That’s what makes this fun!! Have a good one!! Cheers, Jon
A great point about Glenn and Jerry growing up around the fifties doo wop sound. Glenn has talked about his love of fifties music and how Elvis influenced his career in music. Like so many of us they also grew up with early rock music. I appreciated your insights on the working class Italian history and how music played a big part in it. Lastly. Like yourself. We were fortunate to see Misfits in their early days. I think they played with Jerry's Kids if I remember right. I was most likely digging for records that day. Because I went over to the Channel in the early afternoon from either Kenmore or Harvard Square. Excellent food for thought Jon. Well done~ Rob/Boston
Hey Rob!! How’s it going?? Very cool you saw the Misfits back in the day! And at the Channel too!! I never saw the original Misfits. I didn’t even know who they were until after they broke up. Funny talking about making rounds record shopping back then! I remember doing that when I first moved to Boston. Start at Looney Tunes and head to kenmore then back down to Newbury street. Or start in Harvard Square and head down Mass Ave towards Central sq. Haha!! Hope all is well!!! Fall is finally coming!!! Have a great week!! Cheers!!!!!
Thanks Noisy! Appreciate you watching and dropping a comment! Glad you dug this one! And that you’re a Misfits fan!!! Have a great week! Sorry for late response! Cheers, Jon
Thanks Aaron! Just having a bar room debate, except by myself. I sound a little silly up here when there’s no push back, but this is just for fun. It’s hard to explain in words, but as you know, there a heck of a lot more going on with the Misfits than just ‘punk rock’. Thanks for watching! Appreciate and respect your opinions and tastes! Cheers!!!!
Jon, this is a brilliant video, I love it! I think you are on to something here. I remember listening to some of Misfits more known songs in the early 90’s. I really liked songs like Last caress, Die die my darling and a few more. But I never got close to buying any records with them. I bought the early Danzig records instead. However, I feel the need to dig into their catalog now, after watching your wonderful analysis. Last caress is truly a beautiful song. Thanks for a well thought up video!
Hey Mathis! Thanks for watching! I was a little over the top on this one. And probably made claims that aren’t correct. But I always liked debating friends about music and bands. It’s more about the back and forth and the love of music more than the actual facts. Haha! If you want to check out a Misfits record, for you I recommend Static Age lp. It was their debut originally from 1978 but got shelved until the 90s. Although a bunch of tracks came out on 7” and collections in the 80s. It’s at least worth a listen online. The Misfits certainly aren’t for everyone. Thank you for your support l, always appreciated!! Saw you have a new video up, it’s on my queue. Cheers!!!
@@bipbopboom yea, it’s always fun discussing music. I’ve thought about this and I think you got many points in the video. Back when I listened to these songs I don’t think I heard the 60’s girlgroup references, but that was because my ignorance. Listening now it’s damn obvious! But, without knowing too much about the history of Misfits, they must’ve been influenced by punk bands too? At least the punk scene in and around New York, their contemporaries?
@@Glendoras that’s hard to say. No doubt Danzig would’ve heard the Ramones, but that was about the same time the Misfits formed and he would’ve about 22. Not sure how much influence they would’ve had at that point. I know he was heavily influenced by Jim Morrison and Roy Orbison. His favorite bands as a teen was Blue Cheer and Black Sabbath. And he also stated it was seeing Elvis in Jailhouse Rock that made him want to be a singer and play music. From the suburbs of New Jersey, I doubt he heard of Television or the Contortions etc. Probably heard the Dictators and definitely would’ve known about the NY Dolls. But I’m just guessing here. It is fun to talk about. Thanks for the conversation!! Cheers!
We all see things through our personal anecdotes, and we all only talk about the things that we remember.. Great video... whether they are or aren't , were or weren't America's greatest Rock'n Roll ... you make an excellent case for it and to me that's all that really matters. Personally I think it was the Shangri La's.:) The thoughts on 50/60s Italian working class life were my highlight. of the video. . love the wine , the food, the movies and the opera (really do) so thoroughly enjoyed that. Nice one, really, Cheers
Hey Klaatubar!! Thanks for watching!! Appreciate your comments! Yeah, I’m not trying to convince anyone of anything, just having fun! I love the Shangri-Las! They were about as New York as you could get. Back in the gang days they were the real deal. Glad you enjoyed the video, as always take everything I say with a grain of salt!! Have a great weekend! Cheers, Jon
I really enjoyed this video. I like the way the video is put together and its historical value to me. I was in High School from 78-82 . The cliques at my High School that liked The Misfits were considered misfits. I was into The Sex Pistols, The Plasmatics and Motorhead. I got shit for it . Until some of them finally got it. I still have those bands on vinyl and listen to them often. I wasn't into The Misfits back then. As i aged I've learned to appreciate The Misfits more . With today's generation , The Misfits probably will rise above other bands that were more popular during that era. Its always fun and interesting to watch your channel. Cheers
Hey Quicksand! Thanks for watching and for the kind words!! Enjoyed reading your comments! I had similar tastes as you only I was 5-10 years too late!! Haha! A lot of the ‘cool’ kids were still stuck on the Doors and Zeppelin (nothing wrong with that) they couldn’t handle thrash metal let alone punk. Very few of us into music more underground than Iron Maiden. Yeah, funny how some lesser known bands get more popular through the years and some of the famous bands get forgotten about. Thanks again! Appreciate it! Have a good one! Cheers!
Really enjoyed this Jon. Great stuff as usual man! I agree, for what that's worth. I mean if one thinks about just how much society has changed just in the past 30-40 yrs (or 60 lol!) when these lyrics were indeed so outrages, hell these were the lyrics of our youth/teenage rebellion brother! Many can't possible fathom that if they weren't right there as this stuff was being heard for the 1st time by young impressionable kids, who by and large, were attending church, peers whom were, or reading literature and being schooled by church going folks...And now, it's tame in comparison. The Misfits, considering how short they existed with Glenn in the grand sceme of things, will be up there as one of the greats of American rock n roll acts in history. No question. My comparison may be way off base, but not for me, and thats how we all hear things. Like you alluded to, The Misfits and I believe all the members not just Glenn, rockabilly/early rock'n'roll doo wop influence, either directly or indirectly, are similar in that regard, (if not some others with frontmen) to Twisted Sister. I know that may sound way out there, (especially to those who only know Stay Hungry) but for my generation of headbangers, I don't think so if you consider their influence and the bases of their sound. Absolutely loved this Jon. I could also similarly see a band like Metallica and Megadeth being spoken about in the distant future for great American "rock" bands. As you say, what was once considerd hard n heavy by kids like us in the early 80's, is almost just rock n roll nowadays. Anyway. Enough of my blabbering. Lol! I'd buy a copy if you ever put some of your exceptional knowledge to paper my friend. For now, love your videos and sharing. Enjoy your weekend. Cheers bud! 🍻✌️🤘🎶🤘
Thanks Twanger! Appreciate you watching and putting your views and observations in the comments! Enjoyed reading them! Yes , I think Metallica are already a respected establishment band and has their place in history alongside Led Zep, the Who etc. like you said a lot has changed over the years. Only a short time ago it seems, Metallica and the thrash bands were underground and not taken seriously or even feared! Now they’re good wholesome family entertainment!! Ha! Thanks again!! Sorry for late response. Been busy. Have a great week! Cheers, Jon
Right on Southport! Thanks for watching and leaving your two cents in the comments!! They had so many great songs, don’t know if I could narrow it down to a top 5!! Have a great week! Cheers, Jon
Bravo Jon! Absolutely nailed it! 2 things: I’d argue you’re as close to a rock historian as a person can get without obnoxiously calling yourself one! 😂🤷🏻♂️ I can’t put them above the Ramones for any reason but the Misfits are incredibly important to American music whether they ever get the credit or not. They were Drag Rock. Cheers brother
Hey Bruce! Thanks for watching! Yeah, just cause I say something, doesn’t make it true. I like the debate! The Ramones are one of my faves for as long as I can remember. I’m not gonna go against them. I’ll defer to you! It is a worthy debate between the two bands, their plus’s and minus’s. Would be fun!! I never heard the term ‘Drag Rock’ you’ll have to fill me one night on the Dr & Kidd show! Thanks for watching! Much appreciated! You have a great weekend!! Cheers!!!
This is a great format going a bit more into detail on important bands ! 👌. It is quite obvious that you really like this band (like me) and you know what you are talking about. Greets from Max, Germany
Hey Max!! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!! Yes we both like the Misfits! But don’t take what I say too seriously. I don’t always know what I’m talking about! Haha! Sometimes I exaggerate or say things just for fun! Ha! Appreciate you stopping by all the way from Germany!! Have a good one!! Cheers, Jon
@@oztheallknowing8592 you are correct! Classifying things means nothing. I just have fun discussing and debating. My friends and I always had fun arguing over bands and song etc. thanks for watching! Cheers, Jon
Hey VU!! Thanks for watching!! I actually don’t know who Rick Beato is. I see his name come up all the time. Now I’m gonna have to search him up!! Haha! Glad you dug this one, always take my opinions with a grain of salt. Half the stuff I say I don’t believe the next day or I could be argued out of pretty easily. Just for fun! Have a great week! Cheers, Jon
Some great analysis there Jon. They're not a band I really listen to, but I know the odd song from them. But yes they are very much a rock n roll band. As are most punk bands when you really listen to them. The added horror element really adds to their sound and makes them quite unique, especially with Glenn's voice.
Thanks again Grant! You’re spending way too much time on this channel!! Haha!! I agree with your take on the Misfits! No doubt they are RnR and no doubt a good amount of punk is straight RnR! Have a great week brother!! Cheers!!
Blimey John, you've gone all in on this one. I remember hearing 'One Last Caress' on the Legacy Of Brutalty' cassette that was getting passed around school. That & 'Where Eagles Dare' got played out loads when I started DJing at parties in college.
Hey Harris! Thanks for stopping by and dropping a comment! Enjoyed reading your first hearing the Misfits! Thought I’d try something a little different with this video! Thanks for participating! Hope you’re doing well! Cheers, Jon
Judy checked..one last caress wasn’t on ‘Legacy Of Brutalty’...to be honest school was never a strong point for me...could concentrate! 😆 That’s been proven here!!!@@bipbopboom
@@Harrispilton22 haha! No worries! All my videos, and especially this one are full of mistakes, BS and factual errors! No one is keeping score! Cheers Harris!
Funny how I've been lately thinking how great Misfits really are. So simple and catchy. Def one of the greatest rock n roll bands ever. Cheers from Finland!
@@bipbopboom I don't think you went overboard at all. I feel the same about few bands/artists. The Birthday Party is a band that I am very passionate about. Being from Finland Hanoi Rocks were really important to me when I was a kid. They were my gateway band to punk rock. I love when you can tell that this guy means business, just like your did. Thanks again for the great video!
Great video Jon! I really like how you laid out the evidence for this point of view, and I agree. I actually really like the post Danzig album Famous Monsters. Sure, Michael Graves is just doing a Danzig impersonation but they carried on with the doo wop melodies and the lyrics are pure camp. Forbidden Zone and Lost in Space are good examples and on Saturday Night they go full 50's doo wop ballad. The theory still works for this version of Misfits but as a metal band instead of punk.
Hey Christopher! Thanks for watching and leaving your thoughts in the comments! Ya know, I really should listen to those later albums. I don’t think I ever heard them at all! I never had anything against them, just didn’t pay attention. I probably would dig them now! Glad you dug the video and you agreed with my points! Haha! Of course, no one is right or wrong, this is just for fun! Thanks again! Have a great rest of your week!! Cheers, Jon
3 words Jon, Creedence Clearwater Revival Bro!! Crap that's 4 lol, I'm a misfits guy for sure, but probably the greatest American Merchandising surpassing Kiss for sure, great video and discussion. Take care Jon.
Lonny, you may have found the Achilles heel to my argument!!! I could never admit that CCR are the best American RnR band. To me they are the Tom Petty & Heartbreakers of the sixties. Haha. But I don’t think I could legit argue you that you’re wrong!! I may have to retreat back to The Beach Boys!! Haha! Thanks for watching Lonny! The whole point of this was to spur debate and get some pushback! You got me in check! Cheers, Jon
@@bipbopboom HAHA, I haven't laughed on a response in a minute like I did yours, that's awesome, I agree, great debate and definitely look forward to the responses, you know someone is going to say Nirvana!! Cheers Brother, thanks for the smiles..
Really interesting, well thought out and presented.Great to hear the passion & love for the band etc... I only know one MISFITS song,I think it's called Dig up her bones ??? Hope you do some more of these 👍👍👍
Hey Nick!! Thanks for watching!! And for the kind words! I’m just throwing things out there for fun. Not sure I even believe my own theories. I don’t know that Misfits song you mentioned. It’s from the newer version of the band without the original singer. They’re good and all, but I like the original 70/80s era stuff best. I hope you’re doing well!! Thanks again brother! Cheers, Jon
Jon !!! Very interesting point and yes I can see what you mean about the greatest American rock n roll band. You are so right about listening habits when hearing the Misfits for the first time in mid 80s yes they were fast n raw. These days it does seem tamed. Last Caress should be right up there with Stairway to Heaven, Satisfaction, Freebird, Jump and Livin On a Prayer. ;) I agree with a lot you are saying and brought up though. If you really dive into the songs they are stripped down great songs, fun , edgy, scary, and real !!! This would be a good discussion to see what bands others would compare with them. Totally hear the Doo-Wop influence. You could say they are a rock n roll band and strip back the punk but also think about the influence on metal bands. Could they be like Motorhead and cross over the rock borders. This would be a good topic to talk about. Later -VK
Great points and observations Vance! I know I was a bit over the top describing them and analyzing the song. It’s just in good fun! But would have ever thought the Ramones would become respected and Metallica to be the establishment rock. A lot changes over time. And did you know USA Today voted Last Caress as the greatest song to come from New Jersey? It beat out Born To Run and Living On A Prayer! Honest to god truth!! Thanks for watching brother!! Always cool of you!! See ya soon! Cheers!!!
It's hard to argue against your hot take, Jon, except for this: nothing good ever comes from New Jersey. 😉 Kidding of course. Are they punk or not? I could go either way, because their attitude was punk but musically, yeah, they're a rock and roll band, or horror rock, sort of their own thing, taking the old and making it new. Great point about Italian families being okay with the boys being musicians. I think you're on to something there as Italian families were more likely to embrace music back in the 60s than other ethnicities. Anecdotally of course but yeah, I'm Italian and I get it. GREAT video, I love the discussion and the breakdowns in this video. Cheers! Tom
Thank you Tom! I enjoyed reading your comment and hearing your take! Yeah, the Misfits for all intents and purposes are a punk band. I think the question I was trying to ask (and failed) are they MORE than just a punk band, almost uncategorizable. But I think you got the gist. As for me riffing on the Italian-American culture. I’m glad you can see where I was coming from. Sometimes I have these thoughts or theories that work in my mind, but once I say them out loud they sound silly! Haha! Very much appreciate your feedback Tom! Have a great week! Cheers, Jon
Great job. I hope this inspires other VC members to make similar videos. At this point I'd rather see blood in my stool than another person holding up a color variant that matches the album jacket.
I think Metallica opened the door for many of us to lots of great bands. In fact, that may be their true long term legacy. It’s an interesting theory you have. And I’d agree that the opening line is an important declaration. Danzig’s bravado taking the nihilism of the modern world and embracing it. He moves well beyond the usual masculine sexual bravado to embrace death. Making Johnny Rotten’s statement look weak in comparison. The Misfits embracing the inevitability of death as a goal. Even welcoming it. Well done, Jon. Cheers, Shawn.
Right on Shawn! Thanks for watching and leaving an insightful comment!! You described the Misfits relationship with death better than I could!! Metallica definitely turned us onto new music! But I think their biggest contribution is still the creation of thrash and that big chunky metal chord sound. They didn’t quite invent it, but pretty much every metal band young and old were influenced by the sound of Master of Puppets. HM never sounded the same after. In my (often wrong or revised) opinion!! Haha! Have a good one Shawn!! Cheers, Jon
I don't know why I never dived into the Misfits - I guess because I liked the Cramps I just figured it was more of that and never bothered. I already heard the doo wop before you said it and was thinking it (in that minor section). Of course The Cramps are rockabilly, so it would go that The Misfits are not punk as well.
Hey Kris, your musical tastes were probably a bit more refined than mine, at least by a year or two. Haha! Misfits were an easy jump for the metal kids. I failed to mention, but I bet there was a bit of Dion influence too. Even if it was subconscious for Glenn Danzig. Hope you’re on the road to full recovery! Thanks for watching!! Cheers!!!
The only word I use more than caress is fantastic. I’m a year younger than Danzig and I must say Doo Wop was old people music and of no interest to most 60’s and 70’s Rockers. The Misfits are a great Punk band but like most great Punk bands they are Rock and Roll.
Richie, you are west coast. You have no idea how prevalent Doo Wop was in the NY area. It was the soundtrack for the older working people right into the 80s. It was as common as pizza and bagels. And you are correct, punk is Rock’n’Roll. Just riffing up here, not sure I even buy into my own theories. Thanks for watching!! Always appreciated!! Cheers!!!
@@UncleStu-jd3le I think you are correct!! He’s listed on the Static Age album. Thanks for the clarification! Not sure what I said in this video. I’m no Misfits historian, just having some fun yapping about this song. Appreciate you watching!!! Cheers, Jo
@@bipbopboom I was just mentioning that cos all the photos of the band are from the '81+ era; not a critique or anything,etc... Anyways, I've always enjoyed the band since the mid-80's.
If the Misfits weren't punk then neither were any pre-hardcore punk bands. The Ramones had 50's and Beach Boys influences. The Sex Pistols and the Damned both had blues rock influences. What made it punk was the radically different take on those influences.
Hey 6AM!! First off, thank you for taking the time to watch this!! I really appreciate it!! Your points are 100% correct! I’m not even sure I believe my own arguments, just wanted to have fun like a barstool discussion. My reasoning for saying the Misfits might not be a punk band wasn’t so much about the musical influences, but more about the whole concept of the band. They are almost outsider artists. Something bigger is going on than just playing punk music. I wonder if the Misfits would have still existed if punk never happened. I’m not that articulate in explaining my thoughts and I’m just riffing so I didn’t make the best case. The Misfits definitely fit into the punk category, but in some ways they not punk at all. The fact they were suburban kids that had the support of their parents financing the band, the way they promoted themselves and their image was more a Gene Simmons style than the usual DIY. And the songs were more based on fantasy and horror than the usual punk fare. Of course, these reasons don’t mean they are not a punk band, just thoughts for discussion. Between you and me, I prefer the Damned and the Ramones over the Misfits. I’d also make the argument the Damned were more than a punk band, but that’s for another day! Haha!! Thanks again for watching and leaving your views and points! That’s why I posted this video. You have a great week! Cheers, Jon
This was fantastic Jon, I love the analysis of one album or in this case, one song. Danzig wrote incredible hooks and no doubt it had to be from his days listening to early rock n roll. He could croon with the best of em I'm sure. A pure rock band through and through. In terms of them being the greatest American rock band, I think they'd be in the conversation. Perhaps they didn't have the consistency to take that title. But neither did the Ramones nor the Beach Boys really. For me it would be Yo La Tengo for their sheer consistency since the mid 80s but I would say they're not a "pure" rock band per say as they get into other avenues. But in their heyday with Glenn, Jerry and Doyle, it'd be hard to argue with all those amazing songs. My favorite song would have to be Teenagers From Mars but it's all stellar. With hooks! One time seeing them was on Famous Monsters tour, which was an experience no doubt but wish I could have seen the original lineup in the 80s. Be well!
Hey Dom! Thanks for stopping by and giving us your opinions and views! Very cool of you! You probably can figure it out, but I speak in hyperbole. Take my opinions with a grain of salt. Not even sure if I believe some of the things I said. I like to debate and get people thinking.. As far as Yo La Tengo goes, I was talking best rock’n’roll band, not rock band. So you can still have Yo La Tengo as number one US Rock band and there’s no conflict. Unless of course I could persuade you that the Butthole Surfers were better than YLT! Haha! Funny thing, I was on a Misfits kick a couple of weeks ago, but I probably went 15 years without listening to them at all. Like you said they had the hooks!! Thanks again Dom! Have a great weekend at the record show and meetups! Cheers, Jon
@@bipbopboom you have a great argument to be made there with Butthole Surfers. Maybe even underappreciated. Take care Jon and looking forward to more of these.
I can see the uniqueness and ingenuity in a 2min song like "Talk Talk" but i can not see any of that in the Misfits....if it wasn't the fashion the haircut the skullls and most of all the sh!t that the music companies promoted back then i can't really understand why a Rocker will go and see the Misfits or any other misfits....Jon great analysis i guess but i can not understand the words of the song just by hearing it but i am foreign, you English speaking guys can you hear the words easily?????from the first go????for instance i understand the words and its poetry from the first go when i hear "Talk Talk".....
Haha Kit!! Good Rock’n’Roll should confuse and piss off the older generation!! Haha! You know some guy older than us said the same thing about the Music Machine! “What’s with the long hair and everyone dressed in black? Why’s he so angry? What’s with the stupid leather glove?” Haha! I absolutely understand you not liking the Misfits. Some things don’t translate to different countries or different times or different personalities. Just to make clear, the Misfits self released their records and made their own flyers and artwork. They were virtually unknowns in their day. Their popularity came years after they broke up. If we’re talking sixties garage compare them to the Rats who did Rat’s Revenge. But thank you for watching Kit! Especially appreciated because I know this isn’t your bag! Have a great week!! Cheers, Jon
What the old guy said about the Music Machine is silly because they look pretty all in black and with only one glove.....as for the Misfits you don't have to thank me for wanting to learn more about Rock the music i love and spent time and money to find the recs....best wishes Jon, your doing a great job and you should play us more on your guitar man....

Thanks Anthony! You summed it up perfectly! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! Enjoy hearing people’s opinions! Have a good one!! Jon
Well, I’m glad to hear! The Misfits are a lot of fun!! I very much appreciate you watching and leaving a comment!! Have a good one!! Cheers, Jon
Cool video this is exactly what i was looking for!
Thank you sir! Glad you dug this one! Have a happy holidays! Cheers, Jon
Cheers, Jon
You convinced me Bipbopbombini , this song is really pretty ! 🤘
Grazie! I appreciate you watching Jakawa! Have a great week!!
Thanks Colston! Appreciate you watching! Glad you dug this one. A little different than just showing records. Hope you’re doing well! Cheers, Jon
Well done~
Rob/Boston
Cheers!!!!!

Personally I think it was the Shangri La's.:)

I’m not gonna go against them. I’ll defer to you! It is a worthy debate between the two bands, their plus’s and minus’s. Would be fun!!

Hey VU!! Thanks for watching!! I actually don’t know who Rick Beato is. I see his name come up all the time. Now I’m gonna have to search him up!! Haha!

Blimey John, you've gone all in on this one. I remember hearing 'One Last Caress' on the Legacy Of Brutalty' cassette that was getting passed around school. That & 'Where Eagles Dare' got played out loads when I started DJing at parties in college.

Thank you sir! I’m sure I was a bit overboard on this video, but I’m just having fun! You have a wonderful week!! Cheers, Jon

Last Caress should be right up there with Stairway to Heaven, Satisfaction, Freebird, Jump and Livin On a Prayer. ;)
I agree with a lot you are saying and brought up though.
Cheers, Jon
Skulls, Astro Zombies, and I Turned into a Martian tops my charts. Cheers from Brooklyn
Cheers Lefty!! Very much appreciate you watching my silly yapping!! Have a great week!! Jon
Great job. I hope this inspires other VC members to make similar videos. At this point I'd rather see blood in my stool than another person holding up a color variant that matches the album jacket.
Haha!! That’s pretty funny!! Thanks Barney!! Appreciate you stopping by and for the comment!! Have a good one! Cheers, Jon
Cheers!!!
@@bipbopboom You mean best coast.
@@vinylrichie007maybe so, but shoveling snow puts hair on your chest.
@@bipbopboom I must admit I’ve never shoveled snow. The last time I was at the beach some kid pointed at me and said, “Look mom a hairy snowman.”
Next you need to do a deep dive into Skulls and London Dungeon. Two of my favorites.
Skulls along with Die Die My Darling and AngelF@ck would make the greatest love songs video for sure! Thanks brother!!!
@@bipbopboom I’m surprised Danzig hasn’t taken down this video yet.
@@vinylrichie007 Danzig take it down? Who do you think put me up to this video? Soon as the check clears, I’m going full Misfits content only!
@@bipbopboom Maybe he can sign some bootlegs for you.
@@vinylrichie007 I laughed out loud for this one!! Thanks
I think Franche Coma was the guitarist on that recording session. I could be wrong though...
“I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die”
Yeah, that’s an awesome lyric!! One of the best ever written!! Thanks again!!
I think misfits are greatest band all time
I can’t argue with that Richard!! Thanks for watching my yapping! I appreciate it!! You have a great week! Cheers, Jon
@@bipbopboom i need some misfits vinyl btw
