I have a 2000 S10 short bed. 2.2 five speed with 206,000 miles. Original tranny, original engine, original clutch, original AC components, original exhaust, original thermostat, original blower motor, original front end components (grease it every oil change). Did have to replace the wiper motor, 1 fan clutch, 2 water pumps, front brakes, starter, alternator, tires, belt, hoses, plugs/wires and coils, and oil changes. That is about it, great lil truck, burns zero oil, extremely reliable just not very peppy.

Just recently got my 2nd gmc sonoma. It's 1999 with 30,000 miles. 2.2,5 speed manual, crank windows and is a blast to drive. Recently replaced all radiator and heater hoses, thermostate, replace a/c compressor, orifice tube, receiver dryer, all o rings, had rear and transmission gear oil changed, added air suspension to lift up rear 3 inches and flushed brake fluid. Got a crew cab ram but this little truck is more fund to drive around town.

Got a 03 Extended cab w/V6 Vortec and just passed 500k on the original engine. LOVE THIS TRUCK - so easy to work on w/o all the computer stuff on today's engines. Only 'major' repair was a few yrs ago replacing the fuel spider. WAY easy. Actually increased the mileage to about 26mpg from 17. Just now starting to show body rust (bought in Louisiana in 03 but been in IL, MI, FL, TX, OK and PA. Road salt kills! Actually taking it down to the frame and do a complete restoration. This truck and I have been to hell and back quite a few times and She's My Baby. We got too much in common. LOVE THE MODS you did - TOTAL sense!!!

i've got 2 03 s10'S a 4CYL 2WD and a 6CYL 4WD. Both have been faithful servants over the years with minor care. They are heads and shoulders better than my last Ranger. None of the interior issues that you refer to as trash, but then again my 2 live in the northeast and don't bake in the Florida sun

Have an '02 s 10 2.2L. lot of the problems you mentioned are things that've gone wrong on mine. AC unit doesn't work, getting it fixed soon. Fan clutch has broken on me, wiper motors stop working for no reason every once in a while. And the headlights, I just sanded them down and restored them and that did the trick.

I plan on keeping it till it rusts apart

I have a 1998 S10, its still going strong, it's just had some little things here and there, not wanting to get into truck payments, plus the fact newer trucks are big these days, they just don't make a small economy truck anymore, and something compact is all I need, I can haul or tow something if I need to, don't have to borrow a truck when needed...As for the things that have needed replacing...I can relate to everything you pointed out, reliability wise it's good, gets done what I need and is dependable. I did have to replace the alternator a few months ago, the one that was on it was the original 👍,

  • @dylano7242

The main problem with 2.2l was head gaskets and very weak automatic transmissions. But being 4cl head gaskets aren't to bad to fix. It's best get 2.2l with manual transmissions as the automatic is no longer made , have go junk yard or rebuild. A manual transmission can drop all kinds aftermarket in if it goes bad.
The 4.3L got way worse gas mileage 18-19 mpg vs 27 mpg 2.2l. And lower intake problem hard work on a v6 in a small compact truck best just get a full size 4.3L, 4.8l , 5.3 than a 4.3l in a s10.
I needed cheap transportation and bought a 1998 sonoma ex cab 2.2l 5sp 125k miles $2500, and a 2004 cavalier 2.2l 5sp 75k miles original $1300. They are very simple transportation, good mpg, easy work on, cheap to repair and buy. 1998-2005 where the Golden era for moden chervy gmc vehicles. Every after 2005 chevy gmc is pure junk.

Helpful vid. I just bought an 03 Sonoma extended cab with 91000km (around 56000 miles). Body is in good shape, got it from an older fellow who bought it when he retired and then kept driving his older vehicles. He took good care of it. Needs some front end work because there is play in one of the front wheels. Can’t wait to get the safety inspection done so I can hit the road.

I have a 1997 GMC Sonoma with 243,000 miles on it. I have actually had very few of these problems. I'm wondering if it's because mine is a 4.3? Idk. My main issues have been the effing driveshaft joints and front wheel bearings. Every time I do the front brakes i go ahead and just replace the front bearings and races as well.

  • @MA-lm1ql

Theres an easier way to do the starter, you come from the front with a long extension like 20" to get to the electrical connector bolts its a narrow shot but thats the easier way I've done the normal way and it really sucks and if you look in from the front side into the engine and can find that passage for the socket thats way easier.

It's not that easy I need to know more about the truck. Any major dents how is the interior The other thing to factor in is it doesn't have an OBD2 port to communicate with the car if it starts having issues They didn't start installing those in vehicles until 1996 so if you start having engine issues you're going to be doing a lot of trouble shooting without the help of a computer.
