Do NOT LS Swap Your S-10 Unless You've Done This FIRST

- We're building a 2000 Chevy S-10 Xtreme for LS Fest Texas. Just 7 days ago this truck was a beat up old cab on a dirty frame. Now everything has been sandblasted/cleaned/painted, and the engine and transmission are back in. Incredibly it even looks like the driveshaft is going to fit. After hitting a rough patch with the accessories we've got it all straightened out and the engine is complete except for the exhaust. We spent untold hours cleaning and painting, now it's ready for the cab to go on!

Literally everything on that engine was repainted EXCEPT the crank pulley!! I never knew I had OCD until this build lol
Buddy of mine just put a coyote motor in a 2010 Ford ranger . Was a lot of work to do it right but it's so fast ! Look forward to your S10 completed ! 👍 smoke em!
SVT made one off lighting 5.4sc swap in 2001 called lighting bolt
This is my favorite build series I'm following on RUclips
Don't weld the brake booster rod. Thread the rod with a die and use a threaded sleeve and jam nuts. It allows you to tune in the brake pedal height when mixing parts. Once you get the right height add some loctight or tack the jam nut to keep it from ever backing out. Makes replacing the booster in the future easier also. One thing to look out for when mixing parts is the booster to master pin tolerance, make sure the clearance is right so you don't drag or have a soft pedal. There are 3d printed tools to measure it or they sell them.
You need to get either an inflatable paint booth, or do the 1 inch PVC and plastic + AC filters and a fan paint booth. I've painted hoods using the PVC pipe make shift booth (inside my shop) and you can get it as clean as a real paint booth. But the more important thing is you can paint inside without getting overspray on other stuff. Just need a respirator and set it up so the fan blows in through filters, and exits through filters, lined up with a garage door so you can open it to the height of the opening so it exhausts out side the building.
I've done a few LS swaps but I have never bought a kit, just made my own brackets and wiring and flashed the GM computer. One thing to note you can get a straight thermostat housing, which makes the bottom hose much cleaner than the fbody housing that is angled. I do wish holly made that same type of airbox for thirdgen fbodies tough. It would be nice to have a tad more clearance on my formula.
My favorite channel. It always amazes me that there are people that know how to do this stuff.
Ya ought to put a modern hemi in something some day. They can make stupid power with a turbo or two or blower etc just like the other engines. But the ls engines are everywhere and everybody makes goodies for them to put in anything and make power so understandable to run them. It's really amazing what all kinds of modern engines are capable of these days if you want to go nuts. I think you'll get it together in time to go play with all the help.
If he's going to need to that they’re phasing out the hemi modern hemis have cam shaft oil issues and because of this, hemis are quickly.
It's a "let's make Holley richer" kit. I ls swapped a 96 standard cab and didn't buy one holley part. Granted i fabbed my own cross member and notched my own frame. I bought mopar master cyl and got $138 kit online for manual brakes but you drill a hole 2 inches higher in the brake pedal and that increases push rod leverage and they work as good as power brakes. You can get all four bolts off the brake booster in 2 minutes with a 15mm deep wobble socket, 10" extension and a cordless impact.
Just LS swapped my 1987 s10 4wd 🤕 a little bit of a headache next project will be my 1971 El Camino SS that will go alot smother and wont be as tight for sure 🤞
I think you just got the truck's name, the LS10.
I would say you now need an "LS-10" badge on the tailgate, lol
I'm picking up a '74 El Camino today that has been sitting in a field for 10 years...wish me luck!
The most important thing to do when doing a LS swap in your S10...
Allow yourself more than 30 days to do the swap... 🤦♂️🤷♂️🤣🤣🤣
My exact thoughts going in…
Looking like you will have a complete list of things not included with the "kit" pretty soon. It's the sprint to the finish line, after we paint the new components.
LS-10 actually is the best name for this
U make s10 owners look good. Great video
I replaced the brake booster on a 98 blazer. It was a nightmare. I used a crowsfoot wrench with a swivel and some extensions. Couldn't get the 4th nut back on though...
i must have gone the crazy way i took the full dash and column out to replace my booster 6 -10 mil and 9 -7 mill ithink on the dash and 2 -13 mill and 2 -15 mil for the column then went to town to get the booster out i did it the hard way
Classic Auto Air might have an A/C Kit for your truck?
Brake booster its easy using a spark plug socket and turning it with a 19 ratchet wrench
I'm thinking about going out LS from a l31 unfortunately I'm going to have to go Auto cuz I'm on my 6th NV3500 in 8 years.
i used a dual diaphragm booster from an 85 s10 blazer when i did my 83 swap,
remote mount your coils on the inner fenders. looks better as well.
Great time to replace the HEATER CORE, for that "added insurance" and longevity!
This episode should be called "What's your Clearance Clarence".
Great how-to project. If it was not for LS Fest, wondering if another small block Chevy V8, 265, 283, 327, LT5
Running that same accessory bracket, ran into a issue with the power steering pump pully hitting the gearbox, are you running a smaller pully?
I had to clearance one of the bolt heads to make it fit, sounds like a common problem 🍻
I would have put on the header pipes on the passengerside b4 installing the Evap box .
I am using the stock brake booster, stock manifolds, stock steering shaft and it all fits.
What engine mounts did u use?
@@frankrizzo2724 Current performance s10 LS swap motor mounts, I was surprised it all fit since most people say all the stock stuff won't work. I did have to take the steering shaft off while installing the truck manifold but there's still a 1/4" of clearance between the shaft and the manifold.
Just a note on the manifold - I'm running a turbo setup so I cut the stock collector off and welded on a V-band flange for the crossover pipe. There is no way the truck manifold would work with the stock bolt together collector!
LS-10, That's A Good Name For It.
I love how Siri is always listening lmao!!! Great videos man!!!
LS swapping an S10 is a totally ridiculous thing to do! But I am really enjoying this build, and looking forward to see what happens. But, I recommend that you don’t attempt this at home because it will most likely, bankrupt you and end up either getting you arrested, blown up, burned down, wrapped around a pole, or all of the above!
Sounds about the same as owning a Mustang lol
@@ryanm4319 only with less pedestrians hit
We've done it several times, there are tons of write ups online with the parts needed. The first one we did was in a parking lot and it's still running 10yrs later. We were swapping small and big blocks into s10's in the 80's and 90's so we had a slight advantage also i guess.
Only if you have money it's ok
lol , what?
Hydro boost setup that solves your brake booster clearance issues
Okay, well i have the NV1500 manual 5speed transmission in my 03 gmc sonoma that i want to swap
Why not use a booster from an 80's model square body S-series?
Paint the crank pulley!
You should make the licence plate LS10 or JRSLS10
What about the drive shaft and axle? They were made for a basic 305-350. They won't take an ls7 or x for more than a few thousand miles before failure
I've been doing s10 v8 swap for over 40years
now would be a good time to replace the blower motor. No???
I had to skip two sets of ads one after the other when he was talking about the camaro vs truck accessories
How about a HydroBoost electric brake booster? Takes up slightly more space than the master cylinder.
I guess I commented too soon. 🤣
What engine did you use?
If the 4.3 is basically a 350 with 2 front cylinders cut off why doesnt the ls fit better are the heads angled wider then a 350 and why did the transmission have to move back if you could have just moved the motor mounts forward and run an electric fan instead of the clutch style fan so there is more room between the engine and radiator
4.3 isn’t based on the 3rd Gen LS motors. While the 4.3 is a modified Chevy v8 block it isn’t based on a 3rd Gen block.
Does this holly still sell all of this?
Absolutely 💯
What if I already ls swapped it and I’m just now watching this😕
Question.... what did you do to clearance for the trans dipstick tube?
LS-TENS are mean to work on
Swapping to manual brakes, what a dangerous step backwards.
Smaller Malibu booster is a way better idea ✔️
You don’t need the evap box? No ac or evap required?
Will this booster fit an 87 model?
Fly me out there to ya and Ill bring you a period correct Rockford Fosgate car audio system!
And, with the help from MTX Thunderforms, there will be NO added weight!
LOL....I would LOVE to come out there but I'd be happy to just mail some gear out there to ya. It would be an honor to simply help out!!!!!!
We have clearance, Clarence.
Your still working on this thing?
Thanks!
That's it. That's the name.
LS10
or join the ls swap S10 Facebook page and Actually read the pinned post on how to do this without spending half as much money as this guy and running into clearance issues like he did
An extended cab!? Why
Do you plan to run A/C? Also if i run a 6 speed manual do you have any idea which transfer case i should run? I have to put a pedal set in but thats easy peasy compared to everything else. I just really want to daily drive my S10 and being in humid ass Florida i need A/C
As for hydro boost, they came on the 6.2 and 6.5 diesels so should be some in wrecking yards or even military surplus. I am certain my Transfer case hooked to the 4.3 just wont hold up behind a 6.2/ 6 speed manual especially sonce i plan to race it occasionally
Interesting series.
TIL, steering column sounds like Siri :)
Unlike most people if you know what your doing it's very simple today you should have did it 30 years ago duhhhhhhh
Just curious, You said you wanted to keep ac. Do they make a relocation bracket to mount the compressor to the pass side upper?
Yes they do on driver or passenger side holley makes them its expensive to do ac on s10 ls swap u endup spending 200 for new compressor custom ac lines 175 new o ac o rings 5 ac bracket 185 and dont forget freon r134a like 45 plus replace any ac component thats defective have it service vacum the system paying to fix any leaks and charging the system its like 300 for the job or more addid it up
Hey
For the algorithm 🙂
Will this be the same as the Sonoma
Yes
Everyone tells me to put an LS in my 93 s 10...... But that's what everyone else did.. I'm building a 4.3
Two words: image stabilization
What motor mounts you use?
Who's GMC truck was that in the background? I'm hoping you still have the F-250 personally
why do you like that piece of junk?
@@brentkiely657 why are you like this?
@@dr.trombone2747 that grey ford has been a terrible truck . why am i honest? because i'm not a bullshitter : )
What happened to your cameraman???
I heard taco bell was pulling Mexican pizza from the menu for a while because it was selling out to fast
Jake!
The dime is now a silver dollar
I like the name, el s-10
I’d rather 351/302 swap a ranger
PS both of them are slightly ratrod ish mildly put 😂
Safety second I see.
i think we found the name for this truck, LS10
Hey!
Check out some of my content on Ls swapped S10’s! With Nitrous!
Haven't v8 s10s been done to death? Why another one ? So passe.
no, I'm putting a SBC in my S10 like god intended
What happen to your dad & the car con-packer?
How much would it cost to build an aqueduct from Topeka to San Jose? We could definitely use your excess. Climate change leads to too much or too little of everything, apparently.
5 inches isn’t tiny it’s average 😡
That job looks like a pain...🤔
Poor Jake. Why did your wife leave you bro? I hope that never happens to me. I’d be dead.
Do not LS swap your S-10 period. Do what I did. Build your own old school small block, in my case a CARBURETED 383 stroker. The block is the only GM part in that engine. Mine came with a 2.8l/5 speed. I replaced the transmission with a 1969 Muncie "rock crusher" 4 speed, and replaced the rear end with a Ford 8.8" 3.73 Trac-Lok.
You need a better tailgate. Hate seeing all the work your doing and using the bent to h*** tailgate
Hi 💟💟💟💟💟💟🎬🎬🎬🎬🎬🎬
STOP....that's ENOUGH videos of this....it's still a POS S-10...............loosing interest in your channel
I feel like that crank pulley not being painted is bothering me more than it should.
😂😂
You can paint it if you want a detailed showroom look
Hey
🥇 boom!
“LS-10”
Looks like you just named your truck!
LS-10 eXtreme.
love it
Get a vintage air compact unit. It puts everything under the dash and you keep all that room in the engine bay. Then get a high mount pass ac bracket for ict or dirty dingo and your good to go. I did it on my 91 TA and gained a ton of room in the bay and under the dash, ac out of the vent is 38 degrees
I was about to make the same suggestion, Vintage air even makes a firewall forward kit with a smaller air compressor that can plumb to the factory EVAP box.
Yeah you don't need all that to swap an s10 that's Overkill and those Holley mounts he's using are part of the problem why things don't clear
@@neilbrown82 can you recommend good mounts? I really don’t want to modify my Bravada’s braking system significantly.
the evap cover yes that is a must probably,i did it but i did NOT remove the entire thing like you did good lord bro,you can slide it in behind the engine, haha,as for coils mine didnt hit the brake booster.i have a 2005 blazer, with a cammed 6.0 and centrifical supercharger.i bought the hooker steering shaft and it still hit the header,so had to dent it which everyone does,so who cares, now i went with rubber motor mounts because im a stereo guy and didnt want my dash vibrating like crazy from polyurthane motor mounts.OH and i did mine with the entire front clip and grill installed, just remove the hood.every single nut, bolt and wire by myself, except the exhaust, and im disabled i laughed when you said ohh my arms hurt omg bro it about killed me doing all of it,i cut my core support for a huge 3 core radiator,i got the ac condensor relocator and moved it forward,i bought everything at current performance wiring, they have all the stuff you showed.well good luck to everyone doing this,it can be done, spend lots of time with a huge hammer and pipe beating under your firewall so the engine wont hit when it flexes, thats one thing i spent days on.if your gonna cam swap it,get ready, the valve spring retainer clips is a bitch to do,for me mine was on stand really high and i had to lay across everything to reach the back cylinders, most importantly is get a good moble tuner.forget dyno tune.later
Why would anyone put a crap LS engine in anything? :)
I know there is a way to put A/C on that truck. The compressor may need to be relocated but I know it can be done. Don’t half ass it! You’re going to Texas. You’ll need a/c! Love what you guys do! Enjoying the build.
I've seen other videos of the frame being notched out and boxed back in. Fit like a glove.
Dude, you need a compressor - so much easier to blow crap out of that cab plus everything else they are good for like making noise during RUclips videos
