I think everyone has had one of these moments where their life's work just kind of blows up in their faces and the fragile reality falls apart and you start questioning everything. Glad JJ was able to get thru it. Usually takes help. He got it. others aren't as fortunate.
@@gregthegoatostertag8579 @Greg “TheGOAT” Ostertag you know I thought about Greg Paulus too the other day. I believe he is coaching somewhere now. He had it bad a bit too at Duke. I am a,die hard Duke fan. Right in the middle of NC here. Surrounded by UNC fans. My mother is a Duke fan, but my brother is a UNC fan, all of friends, and alot of ex friends too as UNC lovers. (I'm being nice not using the term I usually call them lol). But, I will never forget I had to defend Greg Paulus to those Tarheel fans. I got into a huge verbal argument they were making fun of him. JJ I hope you know you are the reason I love sports and basketball specifically. Please don't think you were only hated as you made me find my love for the game of basketball. I still love duke because of you
I wanna throw somethin in on this, and see how it grabs ppl. I've been watching JJ for a long time now. I'm a Duke lifer, and approximately the same age as him. He's always struck me as incredibly intelligent, but, even above that, painfully self-aware. The kinda awareness that notices the circus of sports for what it is. When I listen to the beginning of this clip, it makes me think of the saying that "ignorance is bliss." My comeback to that has always been, "If ignorance is bliss, then intelligence is misery." I wonder how much of his struggles before he got a handle on things stem from the very same intelligence & self-awareness that makes him so good in the space he now occupies... 🤔
No matter whether it was rooting against him at Duke, watching him play in the NBA, listening to him call a game, or listening to him on or host a podcast, JJ Redick does not disappoint. Very intelligent basketball mind and definitely now a worthy champion in some capacity
Wow. This is really compelling. This is the day this man, who clearly almost killed himself on more than one occasion, signed a 4 year contract to become the Head Basketball Coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. The quintessential American comeback story. Damn.
Love the Blue Devils...Go Duke. Love you J.J. you are a Duke legend. I still love my Christian Laettner too. G Hill, S Battier, all of you. They were jealous of YOU. You played for the best school. 💙💙💙💙😊
idk, he described it as a downward spiral and didn’t seem to be bragging. it came across to me like he was off the rails and knew it, but had enough self awareness to want to figure out exactly HOW off the rails he was, so tracked his drinks during a binge. idk tho, could def be bullshit lol
Nothing is more humbling than to here JJ Redick complain about his problems. When I was at U of A watching a better three-point shooter and player at his position and not even get drafted
Wow. Shows the length schools will go for athletes. I don’t go to class for a whole semester. They are like fail and no way get any chance to get an incomplete. “ if we do it for you that would be unfair.” BS.
@@ramsnation196 Because he was given stuff he did not deserve. For example, he won the Sullivan award as the best amatuer athlete in the county. The great Bill Walton is the only other men's college basketball player to win this award. That is the biggest reason why people hated him.
Damn bro the “finally” “someone came to get me” quote was actually very emotional
When JJ was at the height of his powers senior year at Duke, he must have been an absolute legend at parties.
No question haha and, not in a bad way, he’s a little arrogant too, definitely had all the broads

that is amazing he did not pass out. just imagine if he was disciplined how much better he would have been?

“I Hate JJ Redick”
Players these days are like “what’s a sophomore year?”
JJ one of the greatest shooters/scorers/players of all time at Duke!!
JJ you are a goddamn inspiration
A lot of emotional IQ. Shocking he still likes people in general...
Come along way, and he’s upfront too, he’s been through the shits
He is the reason i watch basketball his senior yr at duke was my 8th grade year. and reggie bush was the reason i watched football.

This interview is JJ debunking the myth that going to college has advantages over going straight to the NBA.
In the NBA he would have been cut. No coach would have come to get him and help dig him out.
JJ put up a lot of bricks in his Duke career, but his senior year was pretty good: 47% from the field, 42% from three, 28.9 points a game.
Honestly since he’s like 6’6 and an athlete makes sense he could down 30 beers
Prolly light beers too
2:18 look at the center of the screen :) alittle nugget from Will
In response to being bullied by Maryland, our boi JJ thought that it was a good idea to go on national TV and read poetry

the cargo shorts era 🔥🔥
The $5 tip to our Bellhop at the Ocean City Holiday Inn Suites was legendary. We forever referred to a $fiver$ as a “💴 JJ 💴”.
Great episode. Great story.

He pulled a great George Costanza at the end there too. Leave on a high note.

Tar Heel fans invented cancel culture. The journalists pushing the false story against the Duke Lacrosse kids were Carolina grads.

Love JJ but alarm clocks definitely existed when he was in college. Seems like the logical way to fix that problem
I never understood how he got so much hate and imma dunk fan and I’m from DC
Living in Kentucky and being a tar heel fan from the Vince and Jamison days, you sir were hated in college.
Coach K mean af
So instead of just buying an alarm clock so he could put his phone on silent at night he changed his phone number 15 times?
😆😆😆😆
he did say he ended up with only $7 haha
This is low point for him? I crushed beers and watched The OC on Hulu a few weeks ago and it was an absolute highlight reel kind of night
