I just acquired a whole new perspective. I guess I've never given players much thought beyond a one dimensional perception that every player's path was pretty much a limo ride to the bank. What I saw instead is the struggle to balance all the facets of life through a course of challenges, something most of us can relate to. What we usually see is all the glamour and glitz between workouts and games, not the moving boxes in modest rental properties during conversations of uncertainty. I particularly hadn't considered the issue of effect on family life - the missing stability of a permanent home, community and time with family. In this aspect, players have more in common with members of the armed forces than the elites we tend to group them with. Redick is a smart, articulate guy. The way he shared his experience bumped me out of a rut of misunderstanding.
i definitely understand what you saying J. younger. i'm in the Armed Forces and i can see how his moving and stuff is related to my family having to deal with constantly switching duty station every 2 years. But one thing i'll say is, damn..if i'm getting paid let's just be modest and say $5 million dollars/year, i don't think i'd be as frustrated to be moving. As a matter a fact, he about to get $23 million this year, let's just say next year, if you Reddick can't you just say fuck this i hate moving, it's hard on my family, i'm retiring? in the military i can't say that because i'm only making $60k/year. Anyway, Reddick is my boi though, let's see how he do this year. I know his a sniper on that 3 point line. I'm a 3 point specialist myself. I was hoping Jimmer Ferdette was going to be able to stay in the league longer but his skills never develop, so i keep my eye on JJ.
I'm also a fan of the Clippers, but I'm a fan of any team that Joel Embiid is on since he is Cameroonian and I'm part Cameroonian. So, I'm really happy that JJ can still play for a team that I will support.
@Ronnie MGR yeah, THIS year. His comment was posted a year ago, last year Redick signed a 1 year deal for 23 million. They resigned him this year for 12.5 million. Check your own facts and chill
His total scoring eff% is pretty high so the 76ers must have been checking that out. I'm a celts fan, and I thought the sixers were better when mcconnell played. I was happy when ben simmons played, espeically the 1st couple of yrs.
This was fantastic man. You don't really think about the sense of disappointment and neglect a free agent gets from their prior team and the effect it also has on their families. JJ was very candid about the whole experience even the whole 10% thing but damn some YOU GETTIN PAAAAIIIIIDDDDD. It's a great sign when your a ball fan and you are excited to watch Philly this last year and going forward, we all are and hopefully things come together finally and they become the beast they can be. TRUST THE PROCESS.
Mc LBJ There’s a lot of uncertainty in that shit man. That’s why I get mad when the commentators always talk about who Cleveland needs to trade for to help LeBron and where LeBron should play next season. Smh
This was amazing. For the first time I thought about how difficult it must be just to have to pack, move, uproot a family at almost any given moment...
Remarkable shooter, great player, but even better guy. JJ's had an above-average NBA career silencing his doubters that thought he wouldn't last a day coming out of Duke. He works diligently perfecting his craft and making sure he's in tip top shape which is why he's been so successful despite the challenges. Great vid.
He made his mistresses sign contracts saying they were required to have abortions and keep quiet before anything happened lol so idk about "even better guy"
He is right. Philly right now is the best situation for JJ financially and it gives him leverage. He may be 33 but his shooting and ability to play off ball will age well and has tremendous value in the league. And once Philly sorts out their long term contract situations for their core players they may want JJ to be there for the 3-4 year deal.
Absolutely right lM0-after Embiid & Covington get taken care of and assuming JJ has a good year(&he should) I think they offer him a 3/4Yr extension avg 15/17Mil a Yr. They've said it's a 1yr deal but they think if all goes well he'll be around longer, so@15 for 3Yrs it becomes more like a 4Yr deal@17Mil average. He's exactly what they needed, a marksman who can catch and shoot the triple, his help alone with the spacing will be worth it. Simmons drive & dish to Fultz/JJ/ Covington open to knock down open 3's. With Embiid playing mostly in the post, pick & rolls and pick n pops will attract attention in the paint, as will Ben+Fultz driving and finishing ability, so having someone like JJ to go along with Covington that will be able to make the D pay by knocking down wide open 3's will make it hard on opponents. Essentially 2-5 now can stretch the floor being good shooters. Simmons, Fultz, JJ Redick, Covington, Dario, Embiid as your top 6 isn't bad at all, esp when you figure TLC, Amir, Holmes and Jahlil 0akfor are the guys making up your bench. Exciting time for the Sixers, and I'm Glad JJ is now apart of it and along for the ride. Good Luck JJ
The one year deal he signed was a deal he gave Philly. I'm sure there was a side agreement made. To resign JJ to a 3 year deal, after the one year deal expires. Btw, great move. JJ added a veteran presence. Averaged 17.7 ppg in the regular season. Career high average.
I'm a big soccer fan from the UK and shit like this is what makes the NBA such an interesting sport. The accessibility is something you just don't see in the other major sports

I cannot overstate enough how happy I am to have a player of JJ's character on MY 76ers team. I am a huge UNC fan so all I've ever known abt JJ was during his Duke dys in those epic battles. I hated his guts. I love that this gives a look at the MAN he's grown into while also giving the viewer a peek into the uncertainty of free agency & the REAL LIFE part of the NBA and how it affects their psyche. Great stuff UNINTERRUPTED! Keep it coming.
Definitely appreciate the insight that JJ shared with us. He's received a helluva raise though lol. We look forward to having him in Philly this season.
JJ was my first real favourite player.. the first basketball game i watched was a clippers one. I watched JJ play and the way he shot the ball really made me fall in love with the game. i started playing 2k15 with the clippers and i played the whole time with the clippers and JJ on the perimeter. Its really great to see him on a better team than LA. Happy he got his deal
Wow after watching this I'm am so glad we have you here in Philly. So much maturity in this guy. I think a lot of people forget these people are humans as well and this is a job. Philly is a great place JJ I hope you find home here, whatever that means for you man. Prayers are definitely going up for you and your family.
Andrew Bechtel i watched this he day it came back last year and I remember thinking, Philly is gonna be good. Didnt think this good. Here’s to hoping yall get to the finals for real
How he goes about his career, very perceptive guy, Im not surprised if he ends up a GM (or a coach) for an NBA team in the future. Sports and showbusiness is a meat grinder, so much scrutiny about how much youre really worth. Youre basically an asset and your employeer will make sure to squeeze every hundred dollar bill theyre paying you. Getting paid millions, definitely comes at a price. Lots of pro dudes arent mature enough to be able to handle it.
Damn Reddick went from being a third option guard during his Orlando Magic days to a starting role in Philly averaging almost 20 ppg. He really is the unsung hero on that Sixers team right now
As a Duke fan, this was great. I never thought JJ would last this long in the NBA; however, the way he changed his body (post Duke) and improved his foot speed has been impressive. I don't think he got the opportunity in LA (CP3, pass the ball!) but I like him in Philly and wish him the best.
Incredible look into a humble, professional athlete's life. Incredible short documentary. Could you even imagine JJ on the Rockets??? That would be one heck of a team.
I liked JJ as a player alot before. But this made me appreciate him way more as a person. Great content, and absolutely going to root for JJ to succeed even though I am from Boston
okay, I don't mean to sound rude, but I find that JJ was a bit over-dramatic with this whole situation. He's walking into free agency as one of the most sought after shooting guards in the league. He knows his market value, and about how much ridiculous money he's going to make because of the salary cap increase. I understand how hard it is to become a pro athlete and how much time and effort it takes to become one of the most sought after shooting guards in the league. I also get that it's hard on a player's family too, but come on. All of that comes with the territory of being a pro athlete. He's making millions upon millions of dollars that most people in this country wouldn't even think of attaining anytime in their life. His life coming into this free agency is not that hard relatively speaking. I mean, imagine being one of the fringe players in the NBA with great potential but perhaps had their career derailed because of an injury, and are now either battling for a spot on a roster or are simply trying to start a new life outside of the NBA. I understand his wife's sentiment on how tough moving can be on her and her kids, but you can't always where you end up in the NBA. JJ can't just "take one for the team," and stay with one organization, as much as he would like to. An organization has every right to move him if it plays to their advantage. Regardless, this is a great video on what it is like to be an NBA player and what it must feel like to deal with being a commodity.
"JJ can't just 'take one for the team,' and stay with one organization, as much as he would like to." ... sure he can. He can take a paycut and any team would take him. But, he doesn't want to. It's a choice that he made for $$$
I got the sense he was sincerely worried about getting an offer. The clippers said goodbye and the houston deal must have been a low ball since he didnt comment on it. He said he was waiting for coach dantoni to call and no more comments so it didn't go well. I've seen other documentaries with him and he looked stressed in this one. It worked out of course.
Really such an amazing view on professional sports. It really moved me and showed me the sacrifice that these athletes have to endure as basic people as well. Look they are human ... they want families... they want the basic living standard of happiness. What a great documentary.
Watching this again. JJ signed with the Pelicans for a two year 26.5 Mil deal. Quite a pay he got. I'll dearly miss him with the Sixers. Sixers were my team since I got into basketball and JJ is one of my favorite players since he was with the Magic.
Awesome job this season in Philly JJ! It was fun watching you and what an exciting playoff run. I hope you stick around for a while man! TRUST THE PROCESS! GO SIXERS!!!
john pessoa agree. She never has to work and has the audacity to complain about potentially having to move. She had the temerity to say it's JJ's turn to take one for the team. No bitch, the one who busts his ass and brings home the $$$ never has to take one for the team. Ridiculous.
i think yall need to understand that marriage and basketball are two different things. No matter where he plays, she gets that luxury. I think JJ himself would tell yall not to put ya mouth on someone's business you dont understand.
john pessoa I think she might be half joking for the cameras since being a single parent to two toddlers for 9 months out of 12 looks hard. But she knows where the sweet sweet big cash money is coming from. She's fine. She's alright living the life in Brooklyn.
poor JJ he has to move his stuff every couple of years.. poor JJ the only thing he wants is stability but he is offered a 23million contract for 1 year only.. Thank you for shedding light on the traumatic experiences of an NBA player JJ! I hope one day Post NBA Stress Disorder will finally be recognized and you'll get a pension for that
So so interesting. I'd love more like this exploring the player's home life and decision-making. Thank you to JJ for sharing his personal life with us, good luck in the upcoming season.
Yep. Don't forget he's a Dukie. They put family behind lots of things (which explains why his own son likes Chris Paul better than his own dad). Their whole "brotherhood" thing is total Bull$h!t, and was created in the last 6-7 years in a desperately obvious attempt to rival North Carolina's "family" (which is shown to be authentic and has over 6 decades of testimony to that fact). But alas, we're seeing just how much of a fraud the Duke "brotherhood" is this year with all the crap coming out of one & doners Wendell Carter, Marvin Bagley and their families. No surprise here to see JJ put family behind money.
u are insane, hes family comes frist thats obvius, but u have to realize he can get Money manybe one or two years thats it, after 35 he will be lukcy if get any contract...so of course NOW he will try to get what he can
If his life expectancy was 10 more years, it might be fuck up. However, a man must provide for his family. The woman is the heart, but that heart needs blood and JJ is the one providing that.
Never paid attention to jj before because I only focus on certain teams but now that I've watched this video, I'm glad I saw it. Truly insightful, going to pay attention to Philly and see what theyre about.
This video was dope. I now respect and understand JJ and every nba player much more. It's interesting to learn about the challenges, must be so hard to be completely away from family for those very long stretches of time. Not a 76ers fan, but if the Bucks don't win, I hope the Sixers do.
What a great insite to the process!! So hard for the players!!! It's business but makes you remember this is real life!! Great doco. Looking forward to the new podcast!!!
He has a limited window to cash in. Whats bizarre is he went to brooklyn right away so he must have thought that was a possibility( even if slight ). His kids are still young so I would say his family has to move with him. WHen the kids get hooked into schools, that might change, but he is at the end of his career.
Thank you for this video, this really shows the actual life of an athlete dealong with pressure, decisions for the betterment of their family rather than the glamour life we sre
dude 10% of what you do is for your family? need to flip that around at 90% brother. when your focused on doing what's right for your family, then your game becomes easy
Don't judge a man you don't know. How he processes life is working for him. Who knows the man he will become if his family becomes his master instead of his support.
J C is right. Agbahizzal, nonsense. As a father, he's supposed to be there for his sons. As a husband, he's supposed to be there for his wife. He can take a pay cut and quit being selfish.
"Say Daddy be careful, thats a very expensive middle finger daddy" - Wife...? I ain't sayin' she a gold digger, but she ain't messin' with no broke finger bro bro broke ba broke
How so? He has no charisma at all. Seriously go look the word up in a dictionary. He has an incredible shooting stroke with extraordinary range, and he works out relentlessly to be in great physical condition. Because of that, he's a consummate pro that any team who desperately needs a SHOOTER will have an interest in him. In that vein, he is smart as he presents a certain "value" that teams covet. IF he were to succeed in another business besides shooting a basketball it would be because he has the drive and motivation to succeed. Not because of any superior intelligence, and certainly not because of any "charisma".
Henry Liao I know it’s late but it’s craving a sense of stability. Wouldn’t you get tired of bouncing from city to city moving shit in and out all the time? You also think about how that makes his family feel, especially his kids. That’s hard on them with a changing environment all the time. Just something to think about, you know? They’re humans too and can get annoyed at a situation like this
Actually, for athletes, it's not smart to sign 1-year deals unless you're a cyborg like Lebron. You can get hurt anytime and watch your source of livelihood go down the drain. Athletes signing 1-year deals are betting on themselves - to play better and not to get hurt.
Finally, a sports/nba personality documentary minus the same old mindless predictable RAP Talk cliches.. Like "it is what it is"... "gotta go get it".. "you know what im sayin".
Nice video JJ. Sorry things did not work out here for you in LA. The past season, the frustration was more evident in the way you guys were playing and just the feeling around Staples Center. Clippers didn't feel like a brotherhood. Hopefully things work out for you in Philly
No, it was because Nets were offering a 2-year deal to come off the bench behind D'Angelo Russell. JJ wanted a long-term deal and to start, but no team would give it to him. So he took the biggest offer on the table instead. No team was dumb enough to give JJ this much money except the Sixers. It's a 1-year rental. An expensive rental.
I think he wanted to play for the nets.. I thought him and Jeremy Lin would be a good combo... Pretty much changed when Brooklyn did that Lopez trade.. after that it wouldn't make sense for him to go to the nets
JJ reppin the silversun pickups!! Probably the only basketball player I could jam with or blast some tunes in the car with. He seems like a pretty down to earth man, good father
Betrayed? Nigga are you dumb. He had to leave because the 76ers weren’t willing to pay him the money he deserves and instead they’re spending 170 mil on no Jumpshot Ben Simmons.

U can tell JJ stacking n saving his bread for life after bball...dude lives n a modest ordinary looking home
Especially in LA? Of course
His rental in Brooklyn costs more annually than some will pay for their mortgages in 20 years
In Iowa, yes, in LA? That's a million dollar home
@Anthony Okafor That's because of the location, not because of the actual house. The land is so expensive, not the house.
he lives in the DUMBO section of brooklyn, that 2 bedroom costing you 2800-3500 a month easy

I'm curious, how is it different in the EPL compared to NBA? Don't players get traded and have to move to another city all the time?
@@underpressure07140 there are almost never "trades" in football but when they do happen the players sign new contracts anyway it's kinda complicated but basically there are these things called transfer fees which means you pretty much pay a player's current team for the ability to sign that player who you then have to pay wages bonuses agent etc and in Europe this is only allowed to happen during the summer/offseason and the month of January
in essence it don't work like that cause the teams aren't franchises like in US sports in football the league(s) don't technically own everything so players have a lot more power but so do agents and the teams with the most $$$ so yes players do get forced out of their teams and stuff but you can't cancel contracts without mutual agreement or serious breaches of contract and free agents have a lot more choice on what happens when their contracts run out because of a very important court case in the 90s

Youre basically an asset and your employeer will make sure to squeeze every hundred dollar bill theyre paying you. Getting paid millions, definitely comes at a price. Lots of pro dudes arent mature enough to be able to handle it.
Details?
Damn Reddick went from being a third option guard during his Orlando Magic days to a starting role in Philly averaging almost 20 ppg. He really is the unsung hero on that Sixers team right now
He was an excellent compliment to play with ben simmons who won't shoot 3's and JJ loves the 3.
As a Duke fan, this was great. I never thought JJ would last this long in the NBA; however, the way he changed his body (post Duke) and improved his foot speed has been impressive. I don't think he got the opportunity in LA (CP3, pass the ball!) but I like him in Philly and wish him the best.
Anyone here after the 2020 Clippers blew a 3-1 lead? JJ was spot on about the Clipper culture and that still carried on with Doc, etc.
This was so insightful, well done JJ your are a true journey man! But I hope you find peace in Philly.
Incredible look into a humble, professional athlete's life. Incredible short documentary.
Could you even imagine JJ on the Rockets??? That would be one heck of a team.
Damn. Shoutout to Lebron for creating Undisputed, really great content
I liked JJ as a player alot before. But this made me appreciate him way more as a person. Great content, and absolutely going to root for JJ to succeed even though I am from Boston
The Chronicles of Reddick podcast brought me here
Got nothin but mad love and respect for this man 🙏🏻
This is a great short film honestly.
Such a great short doco - thanks for posting for free too!
he threw out all those towels and pillows and shit? id use them shit
AzNwacko 😨
A lot of NBA players should do this. I really enjoyed this thanks.
okay, I don't mean to sound rude, but I find that JJ was a bit over-dramatic with this whole situation.
My fav player on NBA2k12 😂😂
Watching this again. JJ signed with the Pelicans for a two year 26.5 Mil deal. Quite a pay he got.
I'll dearly miss him with the Sixers. Sixers were my team since I got into basketball and JJ is one of my favorite players since he was with the Magic.
One of the greats sharp shooters underrated AF
Awesome job this season in Philly JJ! It was fun watching you and what an exciting playoff run. I hope you stick around for a while man! TRUST THE PROCESS! GO SIXERS!!!
Not trying to sound like a jerk but i didnt like when the wife was complaining about where to live and vote for brooklyn lol. Have some perspective!!
john pessoa agree.
Seriously. She's living the dream. Complaining about how hard moving is? Yeah, must be exhausting to watch people carry all those boxes.
bad wife ...icant strictly say a good wife support her husband and ready to go with him even to the hell if needed
Just love these kind of short films/documentaries. Need more!
poor JJ he has to move his stuff every couple of years.. poor JJ the only thing he wants is stability but he is offered a 23million contract for 1 year only..
He really said 30% salary 10% family
No surprise here to see JJ put family behind money.
u are insane, hes family comes frist thats obvius, but u have to realize he can get Money manybe one or two years thats it, after 35 he will be lukcy if get any contract...so of course NOW he will try to get what he can
He’s talking about how he has to divide his attention/effort to get the best situation for him financially and success wise while playing in the NBA.
If his life expectancy was 10 more years, it might be fuck up. However, a man must provide for his family. The woman is the heart, but that heart needs blood and JJ is the one providing that.
Caleb Davenport he's being honest like when he said he can't think about much the night before a game
Original and authentic. Kudos on saying something real when the news cycles are anything but.
Never paid attention to jj before because I only focus on certain teams but now that I've watched this video, I'm glad I saw it. Truly insightful, going to pay attention to Philly and see what theyre about.
great solid player, always hitting big 3's
I appreciate the video was shot. loving the video.
76ers in the playoffs this season!!! trust me
I love the honesty in the clip
i am becoming a fan of this guy
This video was dope. I now respect and understand JJ and every nba player much more. It's interesting to learn about the challenges, must be so hard to be completely away from family for those very long stretches of time. Not a 76ers fan, but if the Bucks don't win, I hope the Sixers do.
redick was awesome for us
Brandon Preach!!!!
People Care About Who They Might Get Instead Who They Have 💯💯💯
REAL SHIT
Trust The Process!
What a great insite to the process!! So hard for the players!!! It's business but makes you remember this is real life!! Great doco. Looking forward to the new podcast!!!
Welcome to New Orleans!
This touched me in a profound way. Great job with this.
4:41 Watch out JJ, you might get fined lol
Sheesh this is such a good video, great work guys
Makes you think when he admits that family is only 10% when it comes to the decision. Must be tough on them.
He has a limited window to cash in. Whats bizarre is he went to brooklyn right away so he must have thought that was a possibility( even if slight ). His kids are still young so I would say his family has to move with him. WHen the kids get hooked into schools, that might change, but he is at the end of his career.
Very great documentary.
I been to his house and repaired his fridge a few months ago here in brooklyn lol
Ray guneim lol that's very nice of you
Did you tap his wife? She looks less than fulfilled by lil' JJ.
Mad respect for JJ! What a good dude and player!
When Doc Rivers says "I just want to win", what he really means is "I want my son to be famous".
goodfellabeats it's his loss
Then in retrospect he traded his son.
Lol
just got a whole new perspective on things now... good luck jj... i hope u find again what u once had in la with this new group... good luck
damn the clippers could've at least called him July 1st to say thank you and that they would see what they can do
Oh nvm..clippers called on June 29th..all good
Thank you for this video, this really shows the actual life of an athlete dealong with pressure, decisions for the betterment of their family rather than the glamour life we sre
dude 10% of what you do is for your family? need to flip that around at 90% brother. when your focused on doing what's right for your family, then your game becomes easy
This is why I love JJ Redick. Just overall a great guy
"Say Daddy be careful, thats a very expensive middle finger daddy" - Wife...? I ain't sayin' she a gold digger, but she ain't messin' with no broke finger bro bro broke ba broke
Love the perspective, thanks JJ and family.
He's a smart and charismatic guy. He could succeed in ANY business, not just a basketball player.
Not because of any superior intelligence, and certainly not because of any "charisma".
loved it... great to get some real insights on what's happening behind the scenes..
Its such a struggle having to move cities for 23mil a year. wahh
They’re humans too and can get annoyed at a situation like this
What a prick you are
Beautifully filmed. Great video
Hi JJ, i just want wish u a happy Chinese new year
man. i wanna follow him like this throughout the season and next free agency
Smart 2 sign for 23 mil. Once the team improve of course he gon be resigned so do yo thing JJ
Actually, for athletes, it's not smart to sign 1-year deals unless you're a cyborg like Lebron. You can get hurt anytime and watch your source of livelihood go down the drain. Athletes signing 1-year deals are betting on themselves - to play better and not to get hurt.
He will forever be my favorite basketball player of all time, he works so hard to score
Finally, a sports/nba personality documentary minus the same old mindless predictable RAP Talk cliches.. Like "it is what it is"... "gotta go get it".. "you know what im sayin".
Danny Ocean Shits exhausting isn’t it?! Because there’s much more to that those cliches.
Nice video JJ. Sorry things did not work out here for you in LA. The past season, the frustration was more evident in the way you guys were playing and just the feeling around Staples Center. Clippers didn't feel like a brotherhood. Hopefully things work out for you in Philly
Lol, he dosnt want to stay in Brooklyn because he dosnt want to play for brooklyn nets
Click Click It's a 1 year deal. It's not like they're really losing anything by signing him.
I think he wanted to play for the nets.. I thought him and Jeremy Lin would be a good combo... Pretty much changed when Brooklyn did that Lopez trade.. after that it wouldn't make sense for him to go to the nets
Haha you look like an absolute idiot now
JJ reppin the silversun pickups!! Probably the only basketball player I could jam with or blast some tunes in the car with. He seems like a pretty down to earth man, good father
Anyone hear after he BETRAYED the 76ers and all of Philadelphia?
Betrayed? Nigga are you dumb. He had to leave because the 76ers weren’t willing to pay him the money he deserves and instead they’re spending 170 mil on no Jumpshot Ben Simmons.
This is nice. Great vid and really happy for JJ.
im overweight
you’ll be fine health is wealth you’ll be healthy
