I like it much better when physicists discuss physics instead of philosophy. This attempt to explain the emergence of life using just physical laws and lifeless particles (whose source we don't know) is ludicrous. It takes away a lot of shine from these otherwise brilliant scientists

Although Brian didn’t tie them together, I think he was very consistent that mythical story telling and music and art all provided an evolutionary advantage because they allow us to think beyond the the immediate needs of food, shelter, and security. I would consider all of them a form of story telling, the artist, musician, or story teller trying to convey their thoughts to others.

E=mc2 IS F=ma. Time DILATION proves that electromagnetism/ENERGY IS GRAVITY, AS E=mc2 is DIRECTLY and fundamentally derived from F=ma. Gravity IS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY.

I have been fascinated with Brians grapple with consciousness over these last few years. I have heard him say dogs are not conscious to the extent we are but of course they are and suffer from many of the same psychosis humans do. In recent years there have been experiments testing plants consciousness or you may prefer to call it learned behaviour - where they learn very quickly that being dropped (in a pot) does not need to set off their defences - and then this learned behaviour is "remembered" for over a year (so far). Our consciousness effects water and plants shown in simple experiments that I look forward to Brian explaining one day as he continues his grapple 🙂 - great book btw - I bought the audio copy.

    Thoughts about this amazing conversation.
!) Brian's brother: "Yeah. Veda text #12." Hahahaha! Love it. Science and religion dancing the tango between two brothers. Great answer by the Dahli Lama.
    2) Empire State Building metaphor. And... after that last floor, another big bang and another cycle is born? Kind of like a spinning torus that turns inside out on itself.
    3) Free will. Soooo.... since we live in this grand cause-and-effect of all of creation consciousness of varying degrees of self awareness, one COULD say there is no free will. Yet, we can also look at it through the lens of our free CHOICE-how we react to stimulus in our lives with either fear, hate, love, acceptance, respect, etc. Those choices create our individual small cause-and-effect dynamics that make up a part of the whole cause-and-effect.
Bottom line, the idea of a majestic beauty to it all that goes beyond words resonates and I appreciate Brian Greene's take on it. Thirty five years ago, I asked in meditation to be shown infinity. I patiently waited until a kind of door in consciousness opened up and I got a glimpse of it. There are no words that could even begin to describe it-infinite, omniscient, Unconditional Creation Love are poor descriptions, but ones that I use for want of better words. The vibrations that accompanied it were so intense in my body, they literally jolted me off the bench I was sitting on. My view of the world has never been the same since. How could it? It's when I first felt infinitely grateful to be a participant in the orchestra of life.

A lucid and even riveting discussion of conscientiousness and free will etc. I think it would have helped to talk about the complex biology of systems. It is how these complex systems (the brain) not particles by themselves that give rise to special emergent properties which allow the brain to perform such activity as data processing, memory, analysis, language, imagination and consciousness itself.
