Whenever I watch these, I always ask myself, "how come I'm the only person I know who's into this stuff?" These are all things people should be interested in.
You are not "the only". It just happens that all the others don't reveal themselves, because they are afraid it would be seen as blasphemy. How sarcastic would it be to ask: How come Greene's humans are impermanent, all particles and planets may be also impermanent, but God is not?
You're not alone. I am fascinated by these discussions.
It's the cost - I can "watch" basically listen to music videos without paying much attention. I can have sitcom videos or other videos and zone out easily while they play in the background
But videos like these demand my full attention - I miss part of what he is saying, I won't understand the rest of it

Brian Green is one of kind. He is doing such a wonderful job explaining our physical world in a way that is relatable. I love watching his lectures in the WSF pot casts. It is so fascinating listening to him. I can do that for hours.

When the day arrives that this universe has no need for us anymore we will be gone with no explanation, no recognition of achievements, no honorable mention for our self proclaimed intelligence, no fault of wrongs without any fingers for pointing, no beliefs and sacredness to fight about, no truths and no lies without mouths to talk about.. And yet on that very next day after our departure nature's cycles will continue, the Sun will rise, remaining life will awaken, the wind will blow and we will already be long forgotten by this universe. Brian, reminiscent of Sagan. Passionate, knowledgeable, excellent communication skills.
At 38:40 I liked the way he describes one way to reconcile science and spirituality. I like constructive and proactive ways of recognizing each others strenghts and weaknesses, and building from that foundation. Dr. Greene is in another league way above great guys like Hitchens, Sam Harris, and Hawkins. I like them all, however, I consider there would be better accomplishments via constructive discussions rather than from bashing each other. In the end, we are just humans and the answers can be found when our conciuosness works in an integrated manner.
By the way, I consider myself agnostic. I love science, being a geologist myself, but also have come across nice food for thought from Eastern spirituality and doctrines.

MosPC,we'd have a lot to talk about. I'm Agnostic with strong Buddhist leanings who collects minerals and fossils. Overly doctrinaire fundamentalists are a drag - whether Christian or Atheist.
Love this truth: To get to the whole story of who we are and the world we live in, you need to use a nested collection of stories from the physicist, chemist, biologist, psychologist, neuro-scientist, philosopher, etc to get a complete picture. Wow, there isn't a single thing Brian Greene states here that I disagree with or don't understand - what a brilliantly measured public communicator of fascinating subjects so deeply complex. He is a rare world asset. If we truly knew the odds of ourselves existing - we would probably dysfunction.

Someday's , its necessary to remind yourself that we are each a unique an exquisite set of particles ! .
What sucks is that we can never ever figure out how/why the universe came to be on this side of existence. Since we humans are something, we can never comprehend nothing. I like to think that there is a being that IS ultimate reality, and in this being we have our own existence. One such as that would be too awesome to comprehend, and to me, the thought of that being is much more amazing than the universe itself.

I loved that he compared Glenn Gould explaining Bach's Goldberg variations to Einstein explaining GTR.
Wow! Feels like I am coming out of a spiritual bath in the seas of atoms and muons, properties of which Dr. Brian Greene illustrates with pastoral vigor and certainty mixed with a poetic romanticism.
The last part was extraordinary, "The feel of gratitude toward our very exsistance"..
The way this man talks and explains deep science concepts is simply awesome.

Dr Greene I have enjoyed and every other emotion listen to the Science Festival discussions and most other discussions I have found online with you and needless to say a huge fan - your chat with Richard Dawkins was the closest I have seen you to considering consciousness as a building block of matter. I hope I am still around when we discover consciousness is fundamental and effective however small in changing the frequency of the minute strings that you teach are at the core of matter.

Answered a lot for me and not to be dramatic, but I welled up in emotion in certain parts of the book because I understood myself and humans a little bit better and I appreciate life a little more.

I hope this comment gets to the right person in the Commonwealth Club. I felt that the lighting design was very poor and showed both of the speakers in a very bad light. After the Fukushima disaster 2011, I began collecting minds at CrazyLa AirG, referring to myself as a "quantum mechanist". The science/pseudoscience was still so new quantum physicists were still being picked on for calling themselves scientists. *Shrugs*. So I grabbed it & claimed it. Quantum is no persons or company's intellectual property. *Pats myself on the chest*. Mine. & I spoke it like a 1st language. More. Like it were my very teeth.

I weigh up everything i think & anything that's said to me for potential depth of life within. Quantum ideas don't feel as though they need to be weighed. It feels as though quantum thinking might take delight in the sustained joy of quantum thinkers. It makes me laugh so hard I sometimes cry. It can make me freeze & not breath at all in awe. Whilst i enjoy charting the mind, it will be just like my quantum thinking mind to both bridge gaps & open doors, but then walk through walls anyway as well. It might be a unique perk that quantum thinking may construct pathways through the mind, just ahead of the thoughts that would establish them.

Is solipsism a valid approach though, if someone experiencing solipsism is characterised by feeling lonely, detached & indifferent to the outside world & is not as impacted by words? If truth is synthetic then yes why would they have such an impact on us (the ones of us who aren't suffering solipsism at least😉)?. Could it stand to reason, that of the two types of people, it would be easiest to think reality is objective to who would wonder we had no explanations?
Human problems may be hard to deal with if a person cannot discern between 2 things. I think freedom of choice, is the freedom to relinquish life & be ignored doing it. The freedom of someone making choices (who cannot gauge that anything has life let alone one of us more than the other), is also to drag down anyone with them who entertains them. I give thanks to Jesus for offering us forgiveness if we should ask, & for dying for my and your sins, because it leaves me more time to conduct a ripple effect via a Disenfranchisment of minds.
Who could believe our purpose could be enmeshed with our very beings as history expands as does universe? So that some practice honesty (🔑) & be familiar to other minds in crowded rooms degrees of separation between them, & some others not, & be without as if holding their souls at arm's length from them. Just how vile an idea is it that a man who has been dead for 2000 years will return to resurrect our corpses, only to judge them and then to throw most of our resurrected and judged corpses into a lake of fire for eternal torture? If that does not make a person sick to the stomach, then they lack a healthy emotional development.
I have a much respect for Brian Greene's knowledge and general persona, but I differ from him on spirituality. This comes from our childhood I think, Brian was raised Jewish, I was not. I think that religion inculcated in childhood, is difficult to remove, which is borne out by facts. Jesuits knew this when they said, ''Give me a child until the age of seven, and I will give you the man''. As science progresses however, I think religion will eventually disappear as it seems to be doing at the moment. Overall, it will be good for humanity when factual knowledge is our primary life concern.

Meaning can only be given in a subject-object relation. The subject can only give meaning to the object as the subject perceives the object. Modern physics tells us the objective nature of all things that the subject can perceive, including the subject's own body and brain, are forms of information animated in the flow of energy, but then who or what is the true nature of the perceiving subject? To answer this question requires a solution to the measurement problem of quantum theory. The natural solution of the quantum measurement problem is inherent in the holographic principle of quantum gravity, but nobody seems to want to pay any attention to this solution even though it is the ONLY natural solution. As fascinating as this field of study is - I am increasingly, not well nourished, by it. We may find meaning therein but it is meditation - that allows one to probe the inner meaning of everything. Vivekananda - said that it is grander to study inner nature than outer nature. It seems that this field of knowledge - streams out from the individual to the cosmos - in a largely horizontal form. Yet meditation has the ability - to fully explore human consciousness - in a vertical way. One may even probe - silently - beyond the senses - even to the root of thinking, a la, Patanjali. Where intuition and reality - reveal one's inner nature, lived.
May there be universal wonder and gratitude - for the world, we inhabit. There are those sensitive souls and especially saintly humans - that are - 'as ordered' - to love everything. Their hearts as so inclined and they somehow feel - that 'Love is the Base' and to be linked to it - in this supreme way - is right. Their actions in this regard - mirror this link - to the very Nature, surrounding us. Like it, or not - we are all existing - within - '' the mysterious ways of God. '

As I watch this discussion on entropy I'm reminded of the saying, only the good die young , the "good" are those that disrupt the least, Is it a coincidence that Elon Musk is the biggest disruption to industry and status quo and the richest person in history? A flat body of water could be seen as organized until waves appear th disrupt that calm organization. then the wind disrupts the waves causing irregular choppy waves that over time appear to be organized in a repeating pattern until they form a calm flat pattern. The quantum field can be visualized as a multidimensional web of consciousness, or energy potential, yin and yang, a web made of everything and nothing at the same time.Maybe Nothing could be more real than nothing being real.
