  • The Maruti Suzuki Alto is the most popular car in the Himalayas by far. Which is why we’re calling it the Mountain GOAT - the Greatest Of All Time. In this video, we drive the Alto from Manali to the high altitude passes en route to Leh to try and understand what makes the Alto so special. We also retrace the route that Sirish took on his first ever Raid-de-Himalaya, which he took part in in an Alto!

      Firstly, absolutely stellar cinematography. I played it twice just to soak in the views. Secondly, thank you for making me see my old Alto in a new light. It is truly a very capable vehicle.
      My best memory of the Alto is when it crossed a water logged road outside our house without a hiccup when a Range Rover Evoque, for some reason, couldn't. I felt good seeing a Rangie getting stuck in its habitat. That's evil, yes, but just shows the sheer capability of the tiny Alto.

      Yes. Among the 3 cars i drive, i love my 2016 Alto for city use over others. Never bothered to buy an automatic coz its got a super light clutch. Narrow body with good ground clearance i zip through the left most (mud roads) when get struck with crazy traffic jams in the city :)

      @santigris 2 года назад +6

      Absolutely! My uncle had once left his at our place since he was traveling to the US for six months, and just to keep it active, I reluctantly took it out the first time, to office (since I owned a Swift). And boy, within minutes I had a huge smile on my face! Its ability to squeeze into gaps, its light weight mated with a very peppy engine just won me over completely! And I came home realising that it may not be sporty, but for anything you want to do, it's a total sport!

    • @om5201
      @om5201 2 года назад +3

      @@santigris Yeah. Its no way sporty. You need to revv the engine to make it pull the car fast. But yeah petrol engines are always fun to revv till max rpm. Only thing i hate in Alto is its poor breaking. I dont know about BS6 models with ABS...

Sometimes we thought, it would be our last journey..😂 but he took us to the bus station safely nd we were able to catch the bus.. otherwise we would stuck in manali in midst of the snow in that night.. We have an Alto K10 at home and I can attest to every attribute that you have covered in this video. It is indeed the mountain goat and also the most agile set of 4 wheels after the legendary Tata Sumo for almost all kinds of terrain. This is our own improvised and desi version of an All Terrain Vehicle. No wonder why Alto still continues to be the hot favorite of commercial drivers in Himalayas. Also, about time your editor gets a good raise. The Alcazar one and this Alto one, both the videos are top notch stuff.

    Alto is not just a car, its an emotion. I own one from 2016 ( a K10 ) boy oh boy that car is a rocket just bury your foot and you are off in the wind! Not big in terms of numbers ( 67bhp) but due to its size and wieght it has no problems! And the car is abuse friendly,. I just learnt driving in 2020 and i dont get the car much because i am 17, but when i do, i become a maniac, that car just pulls, i literally abuse the engine like hell revving it going 120kmph in 3rd gear ( ik thats not safe and harms the car) but it just gives you the kick in the pants feel! although there is no confidence while driving when you go above 80 but the feeling is lovely. thank you evo India for this episode!

    When talking about those automobiles which are designed with simplistic and robust engineering.. ; the Alto stands in the first place... !!! Without dispute !!!
    The most practical car in the history of automobiles ; very much fun to drive .. A car you can run for decades and decades.. without issues !
    I heartily thank you Sirish Chandran for bringing this amazing 18 minute video today; It would be really really great, if you bring out more videos in the future on this robust car.. Alto..!!!
    I have a huge collection ; in fact hundreds of previous decades' auto magazines ; which also include plenty of Overdrive magazines where I have a big collection of your writings..

    Thank you for this beautiful video. I am a proud owner of Alto and i have been using it for 10 years now, mostly in the mountains of Uttarakhand. The car has never let me down. Even now it gives me a mileage of 22 on highways. It never got stuck and it's so easy on the mountains.

    The Alto: I was a school kid when it was launched. An old friend of mine had a green one. I wanted one, but my family couldn't afford one. We finally bought a car, but that wasn't an alto. I grew up got married and surprise, my wife's family had one. The decade old girl was sparingly used. And I became the primary user. The maruti impressed me with its reliability and versatility. In a way it reminded me of my own humble origins.
    As for Mr. Sirish Chandran.. I was a young boy from a small town in Kerala who used to save up enough money to buy auto magazines. What caught my attention was this young bespectacled guy who gave detailed reviews with clarity. As I matured over the years so did Mr. Sirish. He covered events both in India and abroad. He drove the fastest and the most expensive vehicles. And now when that same journo reviews the humble Alto atop the mighty Himalayas, and myself is typing in theses words into a video streaming handheld computer, I reflect upon the past, of much much different times, how the past two decades have gone by, and where we are today.
    Thank you Sirish. Thank you EVO.

    I completed a 2000 kms trip across karnataka in my alto 800 2014. It faced mud roads, crazy elevation, extreme heat, forest ghat sections, coastal areas, flooded coorg and back on NH 4! Friends and family made fun of me, but the fact is that it never failed, not even a puncture! The car creates a relationship with the driver just like avatar movie! It's amazing and if someone offers me a million bucks, I'll still choose my alto. 🎉

    I always think. They will say that fortuner , safari XUV are for hilly areas but if you go to Ooty Kodaikanal or any hillstations in south or Himalayas or in North East you can see 100 alto / wagoner or swift : one so called SUV and you can't even see a safari or fortuner there.

    I liked this very much. I can really see the joy and emergence of nostalgia in your face.
    We had an Alto. The standard version (without AC) bdw. In those days especially in our areas of NE, AC was not essential at all. You feel hot temperature, just open the glass and face the breeze.
    But the thing is, I miss the old look of the Alto. I personally feel the front look of current Alto is unattractive. If they bring the look of old Alto (especially the K10 one), I may consider it as our second car in the garage.

    I learnt to drive with my grandparents' 2003 Tata Indigo LS and 2001 Maruti Alto LXi. I kept wanting to go for the Alto because its engine was really responsive and that made it fun to drive. Plus the size and light weight makes it very easy to steer and navigate in cramped locations. This video made me emotional, and it reminded me of the car being very close to my heart. I would kill for a 120 hp version of the Alto, if Maruti would make one.
