    This is fun to watch. In the early 70's we did a bunch of these with friends
    in the Jeep club. We bought the steering boves from a local chevy
    dealer for $7.50 each. They were take offs when the deal installed power units.
    Good content.

    Yeah I enjoyed it. For a young guy you really have it together. OK , nownyou need a Plasm cutter, a milling machine and a Lathe. When I built Streetrods, oh about a 100 years ago, I used to make the shafts that were splined and Double D out of Polished Stainless. The use of one universal is the way to go to eliminate road vibrations in fact they sell a "U" Joint for that but you will hardly feel a difference. Nice work, YOU ARE THE MAN.

    I also got rid of my Ross crap box, but I went the Astro van PS box route mounted behind the front cross member with a GM tilt column. What I wanted to mention is...the late 80's-early 90's little Cherokees have the same steering wheel spline as the GM column, have some very stylish wheels plus they say Jeep on the horn button! It looks really appropriate in an old CJ. Thought I'd mention it cuz it seems you like updated stock stuff over aftermarket.

      Those are called Saginaw steering columns (I've been told). But, yeah XJ, MJ, and any/all GM vehicles from 1978 to 2000ish. That's anything not FWD. Most parts are interchangeable. I once added a telescopic function off a early 90s Fleetwood into my 78 Cutlass. GM interchangeability is awesome.

    Nice work!! Thanks for the ideas. Your step by step is great. On my '67 dauntless CJ I added the tilt column but decided on the Astro van PS conversion mounting the box just behind the radiator. It worked out awesome and it's hard to tell it's not factory with the hood closed. The lack of the boomerang under the radiator is a give away for a hard core Jeep guy, I guess. I like that it's farther back on a boxed section of the frame and has no flex on the frame horns up front. Anyway, keep the vids coming!!

    Hi, I want to add this box to my 50 Willys Pickup. I am thinking power steering or you think the box will be enough without power. Anything will be an improvement to the original Ross. Also you mentioned a single hole knuckle so how would you achieve this? Sandwich the knuckle between top and bottom Heim Joints? Thanks in advance.

    • @SevenBarSalvage
      @SevenBarSalvage  Год назад +1

      You’d be surprised how well the manual steering boxes work, but power is always nice! There’s a tie rod with a hole made into it for your drag link. It’s probably more simple than what I did and the parts are easier to find!

    • @dgiorgi1725
      @dgiorgi1725 Год назад +1

      @@SevenBarSalvage Yes there is a tie rod sold by Advanced Adapters called a "Y" tie rod that allows the use of a tie rod to the Pitman arm. I just don't want to do too much welding other than mounting the box itself. But I supposed nothing ventured nothing gained. Thanks for the advice I m thinking with the 33 inch tires perhaps I would need power but then again. I had a Scrambler with 35 and a manual box that worked fine.. You channel ROCKS. Thanks for taking the time to post these videos.

      These came out of a 3rd gen bronco! I think they are slightly bigger than stock low back buckets.

      It’s a Saginaw box but unfortunately I don’t have specific part numbers. I know they made different ratios.

    are you doing power steering?

    • @SevenBarSalvage
      @SevenBarSalvage  3 года назад

      The internet was kind of split on if a willys jeep needs power steering and I already had the manual boxes so I went with the manual. But with this system adapting a power steering setup should be easy so it could be a possible future upgrade!

    Great job buddy. I have a 1941 Flatfender Willys that I have been restoring from the frame up sense 1993. L- 134 flat head completley rebuilt. I am trying to do the same steering conversion. Watching your video is a great help, but my hearing & your southern accent is had to hear clearly. What is the name of the after market steering column & name of the supplier ? A web site would help in order to place order. Any help you can give is great. Could you send me a direct contact info ?

    Best thing to use that four cylinder for is a boat anchor. Swap in the old 225 Buick v6 then you have plenty of power and efficiency. Then dig up the old warn overdrive unit. Trust me completely different Jeep!

      I’d love to find a good 225, all the ones I come across are either too far away or worn out

      The 14 inch steering wheel with the tilt is what’s gonna help me fit in this thing! I admire a purist though nothing wrong with stock! Thank you for watching!
