- Installing a Saginaw Power Steering box on a Willys Cj5 Jeep frame. This would be pretty much the same for an mb, Cj2A Cj3a cj6, m38 m38a1. The pump and hoses will be in a separate video. #cj5
If you were shooting this video with film, I would accuse you of "flipping the negative!" The video starts out with the steering on the left, then switches to the right, then back to the left again. This is how Billy the Kid got labeled as a "left handed gun," because a famous photo of him got the negative plate reversed, or "flipped," during the printing process which made him look like he was wearing his gun on the left side. This myth persisted until a sharp eyed photographer/gun enthusiast in the 1980's noticed that the Winchester 1873 rifle Billy was also posing with had the ammunition loading port on the wrong side of the rifle! The photographer who made the original print had "flipped the negative" and Billy the Kid became known forever to history as "The Left Handed Gun." A great and very informative video by the way! I'm about to do this very job on a 1947 Willys pickup and this video is an excellent road map. Thanks man!
Very nice Seth, If I ever get my Flattie in the shop a Saginaw box is on my to do list.
Excellent work! Fantastic job. Tuned in for more. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome! Thank you for the feedback and thanks for watching!
Even a manual Saginaw box is a massive improvement over stock. I have a manual Saginaw on a 3B with 33's and it turns great.
Well...pieces - parts are
coming together!! Looks very interesting so far... ! A good bit of structural engineering on that power steering
setup..!? Good job!!
C ya on the next vid
Teach..lookin forward to the next installment of this build!!
Stay awesome!

Thanks! Glad you like it! It’s going to be weird but hopefully cool!

Ha ha ha !!! As of late...

Will look for the next episode to roll with....?!
🤙🧙♂️🐺👍
The new project is coming along nicely! I’m in the process of installing Saginaw steering on the Jeepster.
Nice! Thanks for watching Rod. Hope you’re doing well!
Well thought out and engineered frame modification, power steering will make a big difference, maybe your wife will want to try it out.
That’s a cool idea. I have not seen that before
So how your video has been reversed in one part. Makes it look like the box is on the right side, then is changes back... Great video sir.
It got me to. I thought he was inside the frame for a split second
Hmm that’s strange. I didn’t even notice. 🤷♂️
Another great vid, thanks Seth.
But man, sure wish I had welder in my garage. But unfortunately welders and pacemakers don't mix well.
And that whole "au du scorched mouse droppings" thing... yuck! Andrea's got a great point, shave that critter off! =)
Yeah not being able to have a welder would be frustrating. 😬
Good video 👍👍
Thank you! 😊
We're here with ya!
Very nice work! This is definitely one of the best upgrades one could do for an early Jeep, power or manual version. My problem, when it comes to my own Jeep, is I have been cursed with an unreasonable desire to keep my modifications different from what the rest of the crowd is running. My stock box is shot, the sector shaft has worn through the bushing and well into the case. I thought about the old Hudson steering conversion but finding the parts for an affordable price is unlikely. If you don't mind me running it by you for your input, I'd appreciate comments on an idea I've had in the back of my mind. Years ago I came across an article in a street rod type magazine detailing how to reverse the direction of a Corvair steering box to use it with a T bucket type straight axle. My first thought was if the Corvair box turns backwards for a standard push- pull drag link, then it must operate in the same direction as the early Jeep Ross steering box. Just wondering if you have ever heard of this swap being done? Also, the Corvair boxes came in both fast and slow ratios, do you think the benefit of quicker steering would be less important than the slow ratio's increased power to turn against difficult obstacles? Thanks for the video, I always enjoy them!
Love the video...have a Saginaw I need to replace so will want to see how you connect everything back to the steering. Also wondering if an offset Pitman arm might be available to improve your tie rod alignment even more?
Thanks! They do make lots of different drop pitman arms for these boxes. I think the little bit of rise I have will be acceptable. It will level out even more once the weight of everything else is added. But there are options if needed. 👍
Didn't realize you had a right hand steer model. OH wait it is left hand drive.
Haha yeah that was weird. Either my camera is playing tricks on me or RUclips is acting up. Haha! I promise it was left hand drive the whole time haha😂
Any ideas on how you're gonna finish the body?? Colors, hard top or soft top?
Hopefully I’ll be able to show you soon. I think it’s going to be a rather “open body” jeep. It will probably have a roll cage with a simple canvas top. Not sure about the color yet.
