The stearing was a real challenge on my 65cj5 with the Chevy v6. Wish I would have seen this before I did mine. Thank you for the great information. Will be easier next time
Hi Brian,, I did the same thing ,Saginaw Power Steering Box into a 70 model FJ40 Toyota Right Hand Drive a long time back,, the shaft is the hard bit too do so it looks like factory… regards Frank
I have a Saginaw Box that I got from a junk 69 CJ jeep. that had been converted. They had used a chevy telescoping steering column , which I trashed. I doing a rebuild on a 56 CJ5 and debating whether to keep the Ross box /stock , or go with the Saginaw. you make it look easy. Thanks
I installed similarly on a 1950 CJ3A and ran into a problem with the radiator. The lower tank had to be reshaped around the steering shaft next to the inlet. Have you had to do the same?
@@alanafbaker yes, I had a radiator shop cut the bottom corner out of the lower tank, right up to the edge of the outlet neck and leave a 1/4" ish space in the tank so water can flow out the tubes then soldered it all back up. Only solution I could find and still use the original radiator.
Ive not found much help or how-to videos for the 3a. No room to raise the rad up maybe lower the Saginaw box on the frame could be an option. I just purchased a new aluminum rad and would rather not hack it up.
You could lower the gearbox but you will sacrifice ground clearance. Best to keep the lower bolts of the gearbox as low as possible inside the frame. Use a piece of tubing as a support through the frame. The upper and lower bolts will need bushings to set space from the frame. I welded 3/16" plate outside the Frame for support. Make sure you do not block the fender mounting holes. Leave about 1-1/2"" clearance toward the front of the jeep. Also box the inside of the frame with 1/8" plate. Use cardboard to fit to the frame and transfer to the steel plate. Hope it helps.
One question Brian, I am getting ready to do a Buick v6 swap in my 3b. She is already very non stock. She currently has a vega steering swap. My question is, how to figure the pitman arm angle/placement for saginaw power steering. I am capable of all the fab work, also worth note she also already has a G.M. tilt coloumn. Thanks bud. Will.
I always use a drop pitman arm on Saginaw conversions. It helps keep the tie rod parallel to the ground instead of on a steep angle that will cause bad bump steer. I also place the box so that the stub shaft that goes on will come thru the crossmember and the U joint will have plenty of clearance to rotate.
Time for a new Saginaw box. I always use a manual box, I don't care to use power steering boxes in new or old vehicles. Manual box keeps me better connected to the road. Power steering can be nice for off road though.

This is where I'm at on my '54 3B. I'm trying to decide steering wheel placement.

i would be welding in section of 1/8 or 3-4 mm walled pipe for the tunnel through the cross member. to give it back some of it strength.
Looking good! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Did you find a solution to the radiator being in the way?

the body brian is that a sgi?
Yes!
The Vega steering is failing, as you know, it is not up to the task in a Jeep that gets used. I wheel Madeline regularly.
