Michael Jordan 1989 Playoffs: 32pts, Gm 6 vs. Detroit Pistons

  • As the world currently ululates against Lebron James' recent shortcomings in the 2011 NBA Finals, it is just another reminder of how truly impenetrable the sanctity of Michael Jordan's legacy is. Thanks to Scottie Pippen's mentioning of Lebron in the same sentence as MJ just before the Finals, it served as a harbinger of things to come when anyone is compared to MJ; that is - the laughable absurdity of comparing anyone to MJ at all.
    While it is disastrous to compare anyone to the level of mastery MJ was able to attain, it can be intriguing to see another great player at the same age or arc in their careers. In this famous game, MJ is also age 26 and facing what would become that year's champion Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Finals. MJ is also down 2-3 games and facing elimination.
    But that's where the similarity ends. With Pippen out in the first minute with a concussion and MJ battling a groin/thigh injury, MJ truly became a one man gang and attacked Game 6 with all of his weapons blazing - going out with absolutely no bullets. In what was one of the most aggressive and inspiring performances ever in a loss, MJ initiated or was wholly involved in what appeared to be 99 of 100 plays. Whether it was scoring, passing, asserting his dominance while simultaneously uplifting his teammates, being the defensive stopper or plugging holes as the utility man - the passion, skill, and intensity with which MJ played was a spiritual experience.
    In the end, one can sense the seething pain burning in MJ as he walks off the court -- the pain that ultimately made him the greatest. That is the purity of sport that MJ was able to communicate and that is why he is the most inspiring athlete of all time.
    (Thanks to mjair10rtg for the opening layup clip. You can watch the full video of his here: • Video )

    i keep looking at that dunk at 2:56 when jordan did that bunny hop before he receives the ball. that's what i call athleticism. see how effortless it is for him to jump off two feet during the beginning of his prime-prime. also amazing anticipation with the distance from the hoop and the reaction of the defender all in less than half a second.. this guy must have been practicing fast break like this in every practice.

      When you mentioned “effortless” I looked it up in the dictionary and there was a picture of Bill Laimbeer….Talk about athleticism lol.

    At 3:02 I went "Oh my God; it's THAT play!"
    I felt the awesomeness of "seeing in person/real-time" a spoken legend. Seeing that play in a highlight reel, then having it show up in the context of an entire game -- exciting.

    mj was never a basketball player. rather, he was an artist. we dont love mj because he scored the most points or because he won the most titles mvps, etc., but because he did it in a manner that combined the serenity of an angel with the rage of a bull

    Thanks Hoops for adding all the awesome vids. I could go on and on about how complete MJ's game was, but watching this all I could think about is, will we ever see another athlete that is half as good as him? The passing, the jump shot, the fade away, etc. He is why I love the game.

  • @popeyeisgood
    @popeyeisgood 13 лет назад +1

    crazy speed at 10:28 and acrobatic layup attempt. it only takes him less than 4 second from one dotted line to another side with defenders to slow down his speed at the end. look how big the strides are, 3 dribbles to cover almost the full length of the court. and look at how he almost manages to lay the ball in softly under that kind of defensive pressure with full speed. just amazing.

    This video is a testament. Mike never had the luxury of having a great team molded around him. He molded those around him into a great team. Younger fans who didn't watch him play can't understand. They didn't see. The path be took... He made Pippen and Grant all stars. By sheer will. It's hard to understand this if you didn't see it.

    i am happy to see you writing the intro again. it is as good as the video. jordan's completeness is shown throughout the whole game- for those who thinks lebron has better court vision, wade being quicker, or kobe being a better ball handler, this video alone totally refutes what all you forgetful/ uneducated fanboys believe.

Your videos and strong descriptions have made it possible for me to increasingly understand exactly why Michael Jordan was the greatest of all time as my understanding of basketball expands. I find Jordan awesome in the truest sense of the word. I hope that, like me, there are some new-generation people who have some knowledge of the NBA's epic history.

    2:14 do you really think that THIS was an accident? LOL. Laimbeer didn't see just see Pippen's arm and knowing where he was just didn't throw a no-look elbow right? Nooo, definitely an accident. Just like at 3:48 when Jordan barely dodged another accidental elbow to the head.
    By the way, Lebron who? If MJ had half the team Lebron had in last year against the Spurs he would have beat Detroit right here.

In regards to your commentary about Lebron and MJ, just as poignant is Chicago's elimination the following season, in particular Michael's comments in the post-game interview. His attitude is amazing! He congratulates the Pistons, talks about how the Bulls want to be where they are but must continue to work hard. Compare that to Lebron's childish comments after the finals this past season. I advise everyone to look up that game if you are unaware.

    I'm starting to believe in letting players create their own legacies without comparisons to someone who has played in a totally different era of basketball. Jordan was 28 when he got his first chip, Lebron is 26, let em breathe. Him losing is so old that I can't wait for him to get one and watch how everyone flocks to him.

    @kileer7 Yeah true Kobe and MJ's careers overlapped but when you think about it, Kobe didn't really become close to the player he is now until the early 2000s. Kobe had to sit behind veterans who had made names for themselves in the league such as Van Exel and Jones. So while one player was on his way out, the other just began to become the player he is now. That was a good point you brought up about the freedom of movement initiative, that further proved my point I think. We CAN'T compare them.

    "The mark of a truly great player is not how they play in a win, but how they play in a loss"
    That's the difference between Michael Jordan and Lebron James, Jordan did everything he could to win until the bell rang. Lebron quit in the 4th quarter and his team mate (Wade) do all the work. He's only assertive when things are going his way.

  • @bendcreagh
    @bendcreagh 13 лет назад +1

    @DJbedhead You have missed the point as you still seem oblivious to the one being made. Lebron disappears as his team is eliminated, MJ didn't. He fought to the end with dignity. I also find it questionable that Lebron has achieved more as a basketballer at 26. I assume you base this on the extra MVP and two Finals appearances (and chokes?). On paper, that might convince an alien landing on earth. At 26, I would much rather be in MJ's shoes with the college career, accolades and playoff efforts.

      ian hecox - yeah, how is LBJ now? 3 of 8 in the Finals. Compare their careers and MJ has done way more and did at 26 too. He had multiple scoring titles and a DPOY. MJ also had no squad and a young and average Pippen in his first two seasons. Meanwhile LBJ made his own super teams but you neglect to mention that didn't you? The only things in which LBJ will pass MJ in are longevity stats and who cares about how long he played. He never elevated his game to MJ's level, period. When you look at per game metrics, MJ is clearly the best ever. Assists and rebounds are position dependent stats in case that's what your reply is going to be about. And of course, as with all athletes in all sports, the bottom line is Championships and MJ is 6 for 6 while LBJ is 3 for 8.
      I won't even get into how much harder it was to score back then. The on court conditions were so much harder before the rule changes and new foul interpretations.

    @ChaosCat79 That is not similar to LBJ's situation at all. MJ's team suffered hard losses because they had NO other superstars, & the supporting cast took several years to develop. In other words, MJ created champions out of a team of average players, even propelling Pip into the HOF. On the other hand, Bron gave up on that same task, & ran to a team where he is not even the clear cut #1 guy, much less is making his teammates better. That will forever diminish all his future accomplishments.

It took him and the Bulls three painful, agonizing years, with Jordan getting criticized for being not a team player and many in the press even saying that he might end up as the greatest player to NEVER win an NBA title.

    @DJbedhead 2 things Lebron hasn't done that Jordan has. Play a great 4th quarter and 6 rings! LBJ hasn't even come close to Kobe yet he's gonna be Jordan? LBJ is good but not a great player, he doesn't have the same mindset to push him over the top. If he did he wouldn't said he didn't wanna score as much, which is why he went to Miami.
