- This was MJ's first truly great NBA game. In just his 9th game as a pro, rookie MJ would take over a game due to necessity and dominate with his athleticism and will. While this became MJ's first 40+ pt game (in his career of 217 40+ games), this really should have been a 55pt game because MJ missed a few easy layups and free throws which were uncharacteristic of him. But throughout the game, his knack for the big play and spectacular drama occurred in the most crucial moments. With phenomenal moves, hang-time jumpers and an innate ability to create, young MJ took over the league by storm and this was the beginning.

Hey checkout Kobe's early year videos 1999, 2000, 2001, etc. playoffs. The years Shaq MVP in the Finals, but the Championship was really decided by making through the West. The variety of skill sets in which Kobe demonstrated has NEVER been witnessed in the basketball. I think you will enjoy it!

Are you talking about how he NEVER shot above 50% for ANY season of his career? Kobe was a great player and prolly the best of his generation but he is no where CLOSE to being the player MJ was.
I love how everyone is just in shock of how good MJ was. The announcers, fans, even his teammates have this "are you kidding me" look throughout the game.

The dunk at 2.50 mark is maybe my favourite Jordan play ever. So freaking explosive. Young people know MJ only for his turnaround jumpers but he's the most explosive athlete I've ever seen in basketball.

Best era of basketball. Miss this time period. I was watching almost every Bulls & Hawks game because we just got cable and we had WGN in Chicago and TNT in Atlanta. It was great being in my early teens and playing a lot of basketball myself while I got to always watch Jordan & Dominique.

I saw a stats somewhere that jordans game elevates when it is more on the line. His 4th quarter avg is higher than his career avg, his finals 4th quarter avg is even better than all his avg on 4th quarter.. his fg% rebound steals, blocks assists go up when the game is more the line

He was just so much faster and more explosive than anyone on the court. He was playing a different game. I would have loved to have been a Bulls fan at this point in time. Just to know how obviously special he was, it must have been an awesome feeling.
For all of you arguing, MJ scored 51 pts at 39 yrs old with the Wizards. You all are watching the wrong Highlights. You can watch Highlights of any young player and they have skills no doubt. Go watch him with the Wizards with a bad knee and who knows what else than come back and argue. Other than that, MJ the GOAT and its not even close.
Bad knee and a finger that was frozen in place because he had cut the tendon with a cigar cutter. He had them put the finger in the position that fit his shooting form.
But remember that this is a 21-year-old rookie guard in only his 9th game.
Jordan was a great player, no doubt. But there have been others. Oscar Robinson was cool and deadly. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was superb in his first 15 years and he is THE all time scoring leader, no small feat. Isiah Thomas was a high-order HOF at 6'1". Chamberlain...just look at the stats, look at the film. Take a look at film of the other players some time and enjoy the overall excellence.

I lived in northern Illinois for many years, and saw MJ play perhaps ten times in person. The stadium was ... electric. Nothing like it, in my experience, before or since.

I don't know how old you are but I'm old enough to have seen MJ in his prime (I'm 42) and LeBron today, MJ is the superior player, hands down. At the end of the day, the very fact MJ has superior stats to LeBron in almost every category except passing (LeBron is the more willing passer), rebounding (LeBron by position alone SF and PF should have more REBs) and 3 pt shooting (LeBron shoots a lot more threes than MJ) should tell you who is the better player. Essentially, you're trying to make the argument that the player with inferior stats across the board except for three categories is better than the guy with more accomplishments and higher averages in everything else, what the hell, lol. MJ won a Defensive Player of the Year Award, call me when LeBron gets his first...

Points: Jordan Rebounds: LeBron Assists: LeBron FG%: Draw FT%: Jordan 3pt%: LeBron Steals: Jordan Blocks:Draw. So in the end it's a draw: 3-3. That's where the eye test comes in. First of all remember steals are unimportant when comparing the best players because ricky rubio and stephen curry are top 10 in the league in steals about every year and they aren't great defensive players. As for 1988, Jordan really shouldn't have won it that year and if you put LeBron in that situation I bet he wins it too. Olajuwon should've won it but he was on a bad team. Michael Cooper could've won it as well but he wasn't too popular with the media. Jordan is the most overrated defensive player ever. When it comes to points, it's simple, Jordan shot more. LeBron had a better true shooting percentage so he was probably a better shooter it's just that he wanted to get his teammates more involved. And all I'm saying is, LeBron hasn't played as much as Jordan so he hasn't accomplished as much as Jordan. So to compare the two you have to look at the eye test and per game stats.
I did not see this game live but I do remember seeing this on ESPN the next morning and you kinda knew then that he was special as a scorer but before him no team with the leagues leading scorer had ever won a championship so he went about changing all that and then his defensive skills emerged as he claimed his place as the greatest to play in the NBA with six TITLE MVP's ,10 scoring titles, a defensive player of the year, 5 LEAGUE MVP's with two crazy years off in between

Stop spreading that tired old lie about Jordan being cut from varsity in high school. He tried out as a 5ft10 scrawny sophomore and didn't make the team. He grew 4inches between his sophomore and junior years and made the team as a junior. He was never cut...end of story.

wow, just, wow. i get tingles when i see videos like this cause they instantly bring me back to being 8 years old watching WGN Channel 9 and Sports Channel and actually watching those first few Jordan led Bulls games. I'll always remember those days more than fondly.

Good eye for the young generation! When I saw KB come out, he was doing all his MJ moves and I saw that he was tremendously skilled. But, he was just a notch below in elite hops/hang-time and lacked gigantic hands which put him at a physical disadvantage only compared to MJ. It's tough to ask to have that entire package.
And 13 years later, I'm the first person to give you a thumbs up sir, for telling it as I've always seen it. Huge hands, and the perfect build to have no weaknesses.

Yeah, I agree. That's the best part about the '84 - '85 season....everybody was in shock. Even at times, you see MJ suprising himself. By '86, it was already expected and everyone knew he was the best. But watching the crowd, the players, and the announcers reaction in these early videos is cool.

Yeah, MJ just became more finesse since everything else was there from day one. The immediate thing you also see is the innate body control and improvisation. 'Scientific American' had a huge article on MJ's body awareness and how some people are born with it. Almost choreographed really as he matched style to substance.

As for his J, Couch Loughery said MJ had it from day 1 but why use a 50% shot when you can dunk at 100% jumping over everyone? Remember, scouts were saying MJ had the touch of West when he came in but all his crazy drives made people forget about it. The only real criticism was that he didn't make his teammates better. But then, he won 6 titles and he squashed the last morsel of nonsense.

This is when he was in his prime. When everyone talks about Jordan in his prime winning six championships - nah! Jordan was in his prime in from 1984 to 1990. That Jordan was light years better than anyone ever to play the game. He was quicker, faster, jumped higher, longer arms, bigger hands, length, every offensive move imaginable and the most amazing thing is how he was a one man full court press - if possible, he may have affected the game as much defensively as offensively. It was almost like watching a pro against middle school kids, the difference was so immense.
Even then, Jordan was too much for those guys!!
