I really like your vibe lmao, it has a certain sarcastic "man, having to do this sucks" in a very entertaining way. Same with the Bimmy video's. It's hard to explain but I hope it makes sense. Really enjoyable stuff.
On a serious note about the list, I could get mad about Justice but given the context of being burned out with Metallica, I really get it. It can get super samey that way. With that in mind, please listen to it again in 2 months or so when that's not the case, because it truly is a highlight in Metallica's career. The songwriting and unique vibe it has really are worth it.

  • @VultureLivesAgain

"...and Justice for All" is the album on which they notoriously buried the bass in the mix. Possibly because they were upset over Cliff Burton's death, and they took it out on poor Jason Newsted. I don't think they were known for burying the bass before that. They loved Cliff.

    • @DancingwithGhosts
      @DancingwithGhosts  6 месяцев назад +1

i think any lack of bass before that was just how metal albums were produced back then.. the bass always got the shaft because records (LPs) were still the main seller and the more bass you added, the less space you had on said-record because the grooves in the record would get bigger therefore lessening the amount of songs that could fit on the record

    • @VultureLivesAgain

@@DancingwithGhostsSo… the thing with Lulu is that people treat it as a Metallica album featuring Lou Reed vocals, when it’s actually more of a Lou Reed album featuring Metallica instrumentals. As a straight-up metal album, it’s Illud Divinum Insanus/Same Difference/Promise (by Massacre)-level musical bruh moment. As a Lou Reed album, I can’t comment on it. Haven’t listened to too much of his work but it doesn’t sound any more intentionally bizarre than everything else I’ve heard.

I unironically love Load (ReLoad a little less), but that might just be due to it being my first real exposure to Metallica. I was 13 when Load came out and kinda starting my own musical journey. "Until it sleeps" was the first Metallica song I consciously heard, when it was played on MTV. I later discovered the older albums and love them too, but Load was one of the records that really shaped my musical taste at the time. Along with "Antichrist Superstar", Testament's "Low" and TOOL's "Aenima". All from that 1996/97 era

Hetfield is a good rhythm guitarist but there's a lot of guitarists in thrash and death metal who play faster and have more fun, unique riffs. Metallica is the actually the perfect band to learn techniques like alternate picking, down picking, legato when you begin playing guitar.
As far as the black album goes, I guess it depends on what you're looking for from a band. I wanted extreme music, so the slowing down is what irks me. A couple okay songs speed wise and some objectively good songs overall.
I started listening to metal in 2008 or so and by the time I'd made my way to the black album, I was listening to Slayer, so all of Metallica felt very slow and simple. Then I moved to stuff like early Deicide and Obituary and Slayer seemed comparatively slower and tame. Now my favorite band is Ripping Corpse and I feel like I finally reached my destination in metal.

It's funny how Metallica after the thrash burnout (And, After Cliff's death)... It's kinda funny watching Metallica looking for their sound.
Black Album was produced by Motley Crue Dr Feelgood producer, Bob Rock. Which it made the best commercial album.
Then Load/Re-Load said, f it, we are going to copy Alice in chains grunge sound. Because Grunge is what is selling right now.
And well, St Anger deserves an AVGN good poop insult.
If you really want to check to what Metallica could've sound with Dave Mustaine, look for the bootleg Dave 'em all, it's beyond amazing.

I'm sort of with you on And Justice For All being kind of a drag. I'm not super technically minded so I'm not sure what the terminology is, but it has this really dry, tinny sound to it that's just really unpleasant to listen to; I assume it has something to do with the fact it has no bass, since Cliff Burton had just died and so they didn't want to immediately replace him out of respect, but it does feel like there's something else just wrong with the album in the mixing or the recording or something.

Yeah, I didn't care at all much for James publically mocking Layne Staley during their show like that. I know Alice in Chains had to cancel out on touring with them due to Layne's drug problem, but damn. I do sincerely get it though, yeah- Layne got to where he was and things ultimately turned out the way they did due to his own terrible personal choices and of his alone; just as anyone else of course. A thing such as opiate/opioid withdrawal and just getting through and living each and everyday and night with a total dependency of these however, are just one of only two things in my life that have managed to completely break me down from that of a grown man, on down to my knees as a small wimpering boy that knows he's in a world of sh*t. A personal and literal hell on earth that I wouldn't/couldn't wish upon my worst enemy. Aside from Alice in Chains being among my very favorite bands and from even personally knowing what a taste of how awful an affliction like that truly is, I still don't really understand how it could be very difficult to not have any empathy as to what the man was dealing with at the time. Especially considering he was a rock star himself and you certainly know he's seen plenty of that sort of thing among folks. I mean, I don't think they had any personal issues or beefs between bands or anything- so I definitely thought it pretty distasteful of James to behave that way. To his credit and benefit of the doubt though- and of course I can't speak for him or anyone else for that matter, but I'd bet if you asked him about that little ordeal today he'd probably feel pretty remorseful of the fact. Sitting in silence much older, wiser, and certainly more empathic or acknowledging today than he was way back then. Right along with having made it through some of his life's rougher chapters, to include recovering from his own life's afflictions since then. Reflecting back on a time when he was just a lot younger and dumber.

well Jerry Cantrell even appeared on Lars Ulrich's little Apple podcast thing a few years ago and they seemed like they were buds.. so I guess it's been squashed.. @@DancingwithGhosts i agree... listening to it with my morning coffee, i think i still prefer the gritty feel of kill em all. But creeping death and ride the lighting are fucking rad. like i really enjoyed those... trapped under ice was another stand out for me... thank you. i think if i told you i love bands like G.B.H, the adolescents , Blitz, the SMut Peddlers Ect, i like me some bad production quality.

@@DancingwithGhostsif you were a fan at the time, you did NOT appreciate the commercial direction the black album went. I think you said in another video that you're a millennial, so you would not have remembered the havoc that was caused by the almost overnight takeover of grunge and alternative rock. Hair metal and all that ruled rock and metal through the 80s was not only dethroned, but violently beheaded in the village square and kicked to the side of the road, leaving fans reeling and not knowing which end was up while the dust settled.
The 80s were the day of The Poser, and a lot of Metallica fans felt utterly betrayed when the black album dropped, after we'd been left holding the bag for 3 years after Justice was released. By the time the black album was released, the entire music scene had changed, and a lot of loyal old fans were just not into it. I was one of them. There is a very distinct line for me between And Justice For All Metallica and the black album Metallica, and I drifted away from them ever since. Once it became really clear that they were trying to kiss the asses of alternative rock fans, while also cutting all their hair off and starting to wear eyeliner for their Very Serious Artiste glossies....yeah, that felt like sell-out city for me, and I tuned out and never returned. It was just super off-putting back then, though I've come to reconcile myself with the black album recently. It's a good album, now having had some distance from the shit show that surrounded it!
Based on your review here, though, I might try Death Magnetic, because I appreciate Metallica most for their early thrash sound, and would love to hear some more of that from them. If I like it, I'll listen to the one after that, and follow from there - so, even though I could never agree with you about Justice being a drawn-out bore in any timeline, I'll take your recommendation and at least try Death Magnetic. :)

i get where he was coming from.. and he was right to be honest. In a fantasy world where he thought he could single handedly stop file sharing, there would still be a means for artists to make money off their music. Also, you can't deny the psychological effect of having access to music so easily and freely now-a-days. I don't how old you are but when you had to haul your ass to a music store like Best Buy or Sam Goody and shell out 15 bucks for a CD.. you appreciated the fuck out of that CD (unless it sucked which was a risk you took back then). You actually anticipated new album drops, you had to go out into the wild to seek it out.... you may have just inspired an idea for a new video, thanks!

Also, I’m your age. I loved buying cds and thumbing through the booklets. I’ll never forget thinking how cool Manson’s Mechanical Animals album booklet was even though I got it in the early 2000s.

problem i have with death magnetic (beyond the awful mastering of the entire thing) is all of their choices are 'welp, that's what we did back in the day'. there's an instrumental, cuz the first 4 have those. it's in standard tuning, cuz they didn't fuck with alternate tunings til the 90s. 10 tracks, cuz kill em all had 10.
even the bestsong is a retread in concept of one and fade to black.
nothing was organic. and it's all bloated.
but feel 72 is their weakest, because man is there so much fucking bloat that almost nothing is memorable on it or stand out enough. lux is the only song that felt necessary.
the snare on st. anger may not be great, but goddamn what was with this period in metal with all the wonky shitty ass snare drum sounds? they all sound like garbage/ tin cans.

i think slipknot kind of made that trend mainstream with the shitty snare sound cuz clown would literally hit that beer keg with a bat sometimes i donno just a theory.. yeah death magnetic was quite bloated i bought it about 15 years ago when it came out and got bored after the first few tracks.. but the sound quality compared to st anger is top notch
