Cars Using FAKE Engine Sound!

  • With emissions laws becoming more strict around the world, manufacturers are finding new an interesting ways of enhancing the driving experience from within the cabin without it making the car louder outside.
    One such method is BMW's Active Sound Design or ASD system which uses the car's speaker system to play generated engine sound inside the cabin, but many other manufacturers use similar systems.
    In today's video I thought it would be interesting to demonstrate just how much difference this makes in realtime using an app called BimmerLink which allows you to turn the ASD feature on and off while driving.
    The Bimmerlink app is avaialble here:
    www.bimmerlink.app/

      Personally I think the only use would be being able to make the ASD slightly louder while at a track day with a helmet on so you can get an rpm noise reference instead of watching the lights, with a stock exhaust I mean....next video I wanna hear outside, so Tom's gonna have to hang out the boot with the mic 😜🤣

    I don't hate the idea, but I don't like that you have no way to turn it off without purchasing an OBD adapter. I think it's cool that automotive industry is putting more emphasis on audio. I recently read about Hyundai researching and developing active noise cancelling solution to reduce wind&tire noise. That's an extremely cool technology that I'm sure will become commonplace in not so distant future.

    I like it and think it is very well implemented. I would rather have an exhaust with electronic baffles to quiet or open the exhaust. Than again that would make it louder for everyone. Cool concept video, glad to see y’all out of the studio for fresh air haha.

    It is a tricky shout, I've always been of the opinion that a noisy engine is wasting energy (everything that isn't turned to wheel rotation is a waste really) so I can see improving efficiency would make the engine quieter, so re-adding the noise isn't such a bad idea, having said that, it should be controllable from iDrive so you can turn it off easily if preferred.

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  3 года назад +4

      It really depends on if the engine is producing the noise and then having it muffled by the exhaust system, or if it’s actually more efficient and quieter as a result.
      They’ve done exactly that on the newer models and made the ASD level adjustable from within iDrive.

    • @PKTMProductions
      @PKTMProductions 11 месяцев назад

      Is it really improving efficiency?
      A lot of things in the car that are meant to restrict the flow of exhaust particles also make it quieter.
      This is almost the same as having a sheet of blanket in front of your mouth to restrict the flow of CO2 out of your body
      (Though we have to state the rule that you can only inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth because that's how a car works).
      Doesn't do any good, right?
      So better efficiency = Better sound
      I mean who doesn't love the roaring V8's
      Also the new Electric cars are the big enemy not only for a car guys, but for the world too. The lithium is aquired on the mines by the hard working children, old lithium is then poured into the oceans. Killing the corals which are producing 50-70% of oxygen for our world

    I see a lot of people saying the sound is fake but my question would be, is the sound actually fake and played through the speakers, or is the system pumping out the actual sound of the engine through the speakers? get what I mean? one is fake, the other is just kind of like opening the windows to let the sound in. this should have been a part of the test I would have liked to see on this video. car stationary, system off, windows open and then closed to see how the engine sounds in both scenarios with the ASD off. I'm legally blind and poor so I can't get my own BMW to test this for myself.

      @@socks2441 Understood. I’ve had and/or driven lots of performance gas cars (everything from a 1968 Camaro up to a Ferrari Italia. I was blown away by my first Tesla drive, so much so that I have 2 Teslas now, and will never buy another gas car. True, you lose the fun of rowing your own gears, but the feeling of being thrown into the seat by a Tesla in Performance mode is no joke.

      @@TechShizzleRacing I've heard from several real car guys with lots of experience with performance cars that Tesla is a bit of a one-trick pony. Once you get over the truly ridiculous acceleration performance of an electric car you are just left with a big heavy passenger sedan.
      It's true that I don't have experience in any of the cars you mentioned (other than in simulators), but if I had the choice of any of the cars you mentioned in my garage it almost certainly wouldn't be the Tesla.

    3:38 its bloody silly. i use my phone for a gps (google maps exists for a reason), to play music through an aux cable, or podcasts during my often 1hour+ commute home everyday. i was once stuck in traffic so bad and so tired that the music/ podcasts just were not cutting it so i played about 5 full rounds of solitaire on my phone while driving. i personally think it saved me from falling asleep at the wheel. laws are stupid. just use common sense. dont be on facebook while driving 100kmph. but holding your phone to your ear and talking to someone whilst driving with one hand is fine. (assuming you are capable of it, which you should be... but if you are not, obviously dont do it.)
    but it is literally the exact same thing as resting your hand on your h pattern shifter while driving and talking to a passenger. either way you are talking and driving with one hand. completely harmless. and yet you are considered a criminal for it and fined. what are they going to make illegal next? drinking some water from a bottle? eating a burger? talking to passengers? changing gears? its nuts.
    i obviously wouldnt recommend the solitaire thing i did though. desperate times.

      You do know this has been tested many times and every time they found drivers talking to someone on a phone is far more distracting vs talking to a passenger. In fact talking to a passenger barely made a difference whilst drivers talking on phones lane drifted, missed turn offs and other mistakes.

      @@craigalexp that's bullshit mate, maybe they tested people who can't drive in the first place. Doesn't mean the few should rule the many. I'm pretty sure if they tested you driving without sunglasses In the evening you would (eventually) prove a worse driver than with them, doesn't mean it should be illegal to drive without them, all I am saying is use common sense. The rules are what they are, I understand and accept that, but if you can't see how silly some of them are I don't know what to say to you.

      @@craigalexp go and test it for yourself, hold something up to your ear and talk to yourself, now talk to a passenger. If I had to pick one of those that caused the most risk it would obviously have to be the passenger as you may feel the need to turn to look at them from time to time, human nature. Are we going to make talking to passengers illegal? Having a navigator with a map trying to explain where to go? Arguing in a car? All of these are more 'dangerous' (if you can even use that word in this situation...) than talking on a phone. If it's the talking on the phone, not the driving with one hand that is so 'dangerous' then how come hands free PHONE CALLING is legal. It's the same thing but just without your hand against your head (which I'll have you know Is how I have driven home from work for the last 4 years.. Head resting on hand). You need to get a grip with reality. We should not be fined and controlled for every single thing we do, we as a race are forgetting how to use common sense and think for ourselves. Every day is risk, you cannot completely irradicate it. Stop bubble wrapping yourself and start living a little. Sorry for the rant. Don't use your phone and drive (primarily because it can give you a ticket, but also if you somehow genuinely think it's dangerous and you can't safely do it, then don't, that's fine. Each to their own).

      @@socks2441 Your responses are very 'me' focused with no thought on how it effects other road users. It's a fact and it has been tested many times by various countries. "maybe they tested people who can't drive" actually they use the same drivers for three different scenarios. Driving with no passenger or phone, just talking to a passenger and another time just talking on the phone. It has nothing to do with driving one handed it's to do with the human brains thought processes and short memory. As you get older it gets worse. "stop bubble wrapping yourself live a little" since when is driving for transport become an extreme sport that should have some danger. Why should i have to live with some danger because others can't stay off their phones.

      @@socks2441 you keep going on about common sense yet you say we should be allowed to talk on a phone and drive? You need to get a grip of reality. Good job endangering lives. Every day I see people on the road with erratic speed, driving in and out of their lane, not paying attention to what they are doing and 9/10 of them are on their fucking phone. If you think words like “bimmer link” aren’t laughable and you need fake sound to enjoy your car - you might just be programmed.
