  • Today I am doing a bit of model railroad demolition--bye bye helix. I am taking down my helix in preparation for a substantial expansion of my layout. I will eventually build a new and imporved helix, learning from my success and mistakes in building this one.

    Cant wait to see what the new expansion will look like. That reminds me that I need to post a new video for my page to update everyone what is going on with my layout since I have moved into a new house. Good luck on the remodeling of your basement. Especially in the area that is close by to me. Wichita Falls is only 45 miles away from me and I have gone there a lot to watch trains go by. I even took my boys there one day and sit around waiting on a train to move. The conductor even blew the horn to let us know that they was fixing to move. It was a good day.

    Very much enjoyed your demo video. I noticed you said you precisely cut the blocks between the levels. Your a better carpenter than most finish carpenters if you can do that 👍
    I would suggest using threaded rods for absolutely precise adjustment to grade. I built o large helix as part of a crew on a friends layout and when finished we were able to make minute adjustments using a caliper and eye by turning the supporting nuts on the rods even a 1/4 or less of a turn. The adjustments are precise. We used 24 turn to the inch but 18 turn would have been sufficient. One of the crew is an engineer and came up with a quick and easy system to spin the nuts into position on the rods. RUclips video listed under Jim Walsh
    Consider this alternative to give yourself a break.
    Good luck

      I too start in the second week in August spending the money and time to make room, level the ground, build a new fence, and pour a concrete pad for a shed for my new layout. I sold my test layout which will be gone tomorrow. The new shed that will be built next year will be 12 feet by 16 feet. Wish I could go 20? but I just can't seem to swing it. However? It will be a nice insulated, central air and heating, with 70 amp beaker box to supply Power and lights. Can't wait to get that going. I will be watching what you do closely. After all I have two helix's to build. I plan on staying tune.

    A cool benefit of a helix is it works as a "holding pattern" for trains, giving a separation between "unrelated" scenes. For example, if you want a snowy scene in an otherwise summer layout, you may not want the train rushing in and then out of a short tunnel.

    A helix with a “ sag an all” in Saginaw? Great to see the expansion and all the new lessons. Reconsider a double track helix, it can be unused if u like but available in case something happens to the main track and allows for staging or storage. Hopefully this frees up space to make north yard into the diamond yard it used to be so you can have equall length classification tracks. I can’t wait for all of the new videos on all of the things that were already finished before you started sharing.

    • @RonsTrainsNThings
      @RonsTrainsNThings  3 года назад

      Hi Derek. I do not plan to chang North Yard. It is already a diamond yard, just without the ladder on the north end. The class tracks are all the same length. What this will do is allow me space to model Saginaw the way I want--something that wasn't possible with the space I had before. It will also allow some open country scenery on the upper deck as well as a relocated and expanded model of Bowie, TX.

  • @coxsj
    @coxsj 3 года назад +3

    +1 for 44" radius. Good move. Also recommend double track helix to eliminate delays and provides a passing location. You can always 'bad order' one track if you want single track ops for a change.

    • @RonsTrainsNThings
      @RonsTrainsNThings  3 года назад

      In my case, I have a passing siding immediately at the top and bottom of the helix, so I didn't plan for 2 tracks. That said, if I had a problem with a track, a second would give me a backup.

    • @coxsj
      @coxsj 3 года назад

      @@RonsTrainsNThings Certainly. Another possible value of the second track is to stage a train. Don't know if that works for your ops scheme but worth considering in the design stage.

    Great to see what you've been up to on your layout.
    That's a great idea on the first turn of the helix.
    One thing you might try if wanting to keep an assembly together is to use a sawsall to cut the screws between adjacent pieces of wood. I imagine you might have been able to remove the helix in one piece, well maybe a few pieces, with the sawsall method.
    Thanks Ron!

    thx for showing the helix demolition. cant wait to see the new changes and construction process.
    i have thought for a future layout to build a risen level toward the back that ties into the helix. then the helix would require fewer turns.
    i would want to model a mountain for half of the helix to look realistic. i would leave the right half open to allow access. i also think helixes are cool.
    i like your dog. i had a pure bred Golden, he was very smart and a great companion for 14 years. hated to see him go but unfortunately dieing is part of life. it was great to have him around from pup to old dog. i now have a shepherd mix and she is becoming as much legend as my Golden. I think you did an engine that had suffered a fire. On Sunday night, the UP yard (Bailey yard) in North Platte NE had a car carrier catch fire and all is a total loss, about 1/2 million they say. Ron, I hate helices for many reasons. If I ever rip out either or both of mine, I will find a way to avoid replacing them, perhaps using a gradual, around-the-room incline. Admittedly, though, my layout isn't multi-level in the traditional sense. Trains go down my helices only to reach staging. And if I had to use a helix, I would make sure that it's open and accessible from all sides, so that trains and track in the helix can be reached easily without crawling under the layout. ...Roy

    • @jvanamb
      @jvanamb 3 года назад +2

      OHHHH PU YOU Panama,
      Though I agree all side oh the helix, including the inside, must be reachable and repairable, Ron is also correct that a helix offers the sense of time the consist needs to travel under. Of course you presently ONLY go to staging. Wait till you need more towns and scenery. The lower level may need to start Operating.
      As I wrote to you on your channel my big boys and I have started a rehab of my Upstate N.Y. layout 11 days ago. Still a lot of demo to do, but the helix, in the mushroom, slipped out like track jointer before soldering.
      We are saving the helix for another purpose, but this weekend we are shutting down the Bar Room. Across the hall. Since behind the back bar we will be building two dogbone shaped, DNA styled, helices. From the ceiling soffit (about 12 feet high) down to 4 1/2 feet off the floor. The early plans are to do a track loop. Behind the Seeburg jukebox. Actually in the adjoining room. And return up to the ceiling on the opposing dog bone. NO REVERSING LOOPS NEEDED.
      My love to your wife. Watch you soon,
      ~Jim

      Hi Roy. I know you are not alone here. In a perfect world, I would prefer to have the same distance that is consumed in my helix in open layout. In this world, however, that isn't an option. My basement just isn't configured to allow for that. This helix served me pretty well. I agree about the open plan, and this helix was as open as possible in its location. Unfortunately there was a back wall and that is where my failrue happened--naturally. The new helix will be in the middle of the room, righ next to my spiral staircase (appropriate) and will be completely open, not to mention larger on the inside thus easier to get inside.

    I'd love to see some track planning tips... I'm personally planning a point-to-point from Amarillo to Pueblo, CO. And I'm just looking at Google maps and trying to figure out how I'm going to squeeze it in and what to keep/leave out. Even with a decent amount of room to work with it's frustrating to see how much you will have to cut :)

    • @chriskuhn219
      @chriskuhn219 3 года назад

      @@RonsTrainsNThings The era will be 2006 or newer - I'd have preferred mid-nineties just after the BNSF merger, but when I started collecting locomotives I wasn't as familiar with the history as I should have been and about half of them have the "swoosh" paint scheme which apparently didn't exist until 2006. Whoops :) I'll probably do the Boise city sub, for no other reason than that the curve of that track leaving Amarillo lines up with how I'd set up the room :)

    I really like your videos even though I model HO scale. I was looking real hard at how you constructed your helix as that is the next phase of my layout, getting from level 1 to level 2. I have made a template where 8 pieces would make a full loop and I'm routing to save on plywood. What's your thoughts on that? I am also curious to know if you will eventually disassemble the old helix to recoup some of the track inside? Take care! - Jason

    • @RonsTrainsNThings
      @RonsTrainsNThings  3 года назад +1

      Hey Jason. I will not be reclaiming any of the track. I don't think it would be possible anyway. I have had a couple people express interest in buying the helix, so who knows. I built my helix similarly to what you describe, except I cut my pieces to be 1/4 turn instead of 1/8. By making the 1st turn a single solid piece I could get the grade perfect. Above that, if my spacers are cut exactly to length, every turn matches the 1st. Like you said, this way I can get about 4 turns out of a sheet of plywood instead of 2. I will be showing all of this in detail when I build the new helix, but realistically that my be September...or October. LOL. BTW, you might be interested to know that I have some HO projects coming up soon.

      @@RonsTrainsNThings I was going to do a double track main helix at 28"R and 30"R but I decided to go single to lower track cost and going 29"R so I have enough room between track and supports for articulate locos and cars. But with as wide of a radius I'm doing, If I did 1/4 turns, I would be lucky to get 4 cuts out of a sheet of plywood. I can get 16 1/8 turn cuts if positioned correctly.

    Well Ron...I guess...it's fantastic for the family to have a basement remodel. Being a helix fan I am a bit torn down whenever I see a helix torn down. I will attempt to be patient to see the new design.
    A note on the old. You seemed unsure as what to do with your old helix? My BEST suggestion would be to contact an area STEAM Railroad Club. I don't necessarily mean steam Locomotion. I'm suggesting your donating your old helix to a Science/Technology/Engineering/Arts/ & Math Education Group or train club. We who STEAM use our base principle (my club uses Model Railroads) as a teaching tool for children, tweens, & teens to develop an interest in all sciences. The facilitators, group leaders, & kid's would LOVE having it. For years to come.
    If your interested, and not knowing where you are, I would say check with Train Clubs or course. But check with engineering or technical colleges near you. Or a large school district in your area. If they can't help, and I can't believe I'm writing this, chuck it.
    God's love to the entire family, including CoVid Pup,
    Jim

The biggest complaint I always heard was that the train was out of sight for too long. That is why I left mine open. Good luck to you.

I think if I can fix my couple mistakes from this one I can have a good experience with the helix. The 1 positive thing about the helix is it puts a lot of run in between key locations on the layout. Time adds to the illusion of operations.

    Ron buddy! I think you're a great guy and you have a wonderful channel and you have lots of great information and helpful tips and are a wonderful asset to the modeling community and I have no dislike of you as a person at all or do I have any ill will toward you. Please do not take offense to what I have to say. That is not my intention. On that note, the two Model Railroad Academy commercials you have are driving me frickin' nuts. I'd say they are before at least 7 out of 10 videos I watch on average and probably 4 out of 10 as a commercial in the video. One even showed before this video and one was the first commercial in the video. I was watching a video of a running session that was right before covid hit and I be damned if you weren't in the video talking in the background louder than everyone else.(Because you were right beside the camera guy running the train he was taping, not because you're loud and trying to talk over anyone. Not saying that.) Saying that though I'm about ready to scream everytime I hear your voice. I almost didn't watch this video because of this. I just couldn't resist saying nothing any longer. Aaahhhh!!! LOL! Ok now that I got that off my mind and out there I'll feel better and we can move on. Its awesome that you're going to be able to build onto the layout and maybe remodel the existing layout to be better. I'm ready to see the new layout extension videos and what you have planned. Looks like the first helix you ever built was very well constructed and looked very rigid. No hard feelings I hope. Stay well. -Wil 👍

    Excellent video as always I enjoyed your helix tear down and I would suggest that in building your next helix you use threaded rod. Threaded rod allows you to make infinite adjustments to the grade I built one on a friends layout and in the end we were able to use a caliper and I contact to get the grade precisely we used 24 turn to the inch rod but in the end we found that 18 turn would have been more than sufficient think about it and give it a try
    One of our crew Jim Walsh has a video on how to quickly put the nuts on the threaded rod is an engineer and thinks we are outside the box good luck on your next…
