    Hello I have just discovered your channel. This is a super useful video for me. I do a lot of sewing for myself and I have been going holiday to Bangkok and thailand for 15 years now. the last year I have been mulling with the idea of buying larger quantities of fabrics when i visit to both sell in the uk and maybe branch out in sewing dresses for selling as I get lots of comments on what I make from the fabrics i bring back. I usually buy all my fabrics at Hieng Yoo Huat on Asoke junction and I love them. They've served me well over the years and they've got great apparel fabrics at good price. But I have been wanting to try chinaworld fabric mall. After watching your video I certainly will visit J fabric and the fabric mall! Thank you for the video and I will watch out for any other videos you'll put out on fabrics and haberdashers. I have just suscribed both to your youtube channel and instagram.

      Hi Nathalie, Thank you very much for your comment and for subscribing. I also love Hieng Yoo Huat they have some great fabric selection (and they are right across the street from Pala Pizza lol), I probably shop there two or three times per month. For dresses I an see how their fabrics are a great selection. I pick up the black denim I make bag straps from there.
      There are some other big shops I will be covering in future videos, as well as diving into more about the business of fashion so you might find those videos interesting. I've really started to take a small and micro business on this channel so it lines up well.
      Jib and I are talking about some possible china, HK, Malaysia, and Singapore trips for fabric sourcing as well. so stay tuned for those.
      You might enjoy my longer interview with Jai Sachdev who comes from a long line of fabric merchants and offers some great insights.

      Hello again Dana, I must have walked past Pala Pizza 100s of times and not noticed them!
      I understand what you mean with making a micro business work. I don't want to go for the big bucks because I think it's in direct opposition to the idea of diy and crafts. People who buy fabrics and sew want something different and usually want quality as well and from my own experience and personal tastes, I have a feeling that offering small quantities of curated quality quirky fabrics people can't find in the other internet outlet is an avenue worth exploring to start with.
      I'd love to offer one off dresses using the fabrics i source, put a couple of designs in my studio and see if there is interest.Sort of semi couture on commission ,but I am not convinced if that is a viable option mainly because of the high cost, time intensive labour involved. It can take me weeks to complete a dress as I do a lot of hand finishing inside.
      Anyway I have also watched the Jav Sachdev interview you did but i'm intrigued as i've tried to research the huddersfield textiles afterwards, found fabrics company in huddersfield in the uk and I'm not sure if this is the same people.
      I will be looking out for your future haberdashery and fabric buying content.

      nathalie duran I lived in Bangkok for two years and walked past Pala hundreds of times before I discovered it LoL
      The hand finishing is very difficult and time consuming. I made Jib a clutch to match a dress she made for a Thai wedding we attended and hand finishing the side seams took longer than the rest of the make. And my fingers also felt as though they were about to fall off. LoL
      The micro business approach is certainly very rewarding. I love hand making every piece I sell. I’ve done big tech business in the past and it’s a different lifestyle altogether.
      One of the thing I’ll be talking about in the future is rounding out my collections will smaller, lower priced pieces that can be made faster like the fabric scarves in my collection or made from leftover fabric like my selvedge keychains. :-)

    • @IdeaStudioBKK
      @IdeaStudioBKK  4 года назад +2

      Dave, This is a little secret, Just about every tailor shop in Bangkok has their shirts cut and sewn by the same sewing factory. They send out your measurements with the order details and fabric to have it outsourced. Only a few select high-end shops cut and sew in house. So the best thing to do is pick your shop based on them having the fabric you want. Avoid the lower end of shops in places like MBK because most of them will be selling you cotton fabric blended with polyester, which is the lowest end of fabric.
      Before you go know what style of collar and cuff you want and how fitted or lose you want the cut. Make sure to articulate that to the shop and when you go back for a fitting Keep in mind that these shirts will shrink about 10%.
      If you want to ensure that the fabric is not a poly blend ask the shop for a small sample and then burn it with a lighter. if it just turns to ask it's cotton if it pills up in little balls while it burns then you know it's a poly blend.

    • @IdeaStudioBKK
      @IdeaStudioBKK  4 года назад +1

      Hey Bella, I've got three suggestions for you if you are in Bangkok.
      1. the Jim Thompson Factory Store is on Shukumvit Soi 93, they have some beautiful silks.
      2. There are some shops in China World that sell silk, but inspect everything closely before you buy.
      3. There is a shop inside the green gate of the Chitralada Villa Royal Residence. You will need to be dressed by the same dress code if you were to go to the Grand Palace (must cover your knee, no sleeveless shirt, must have a collar shirt, and no flip flop and will need your passport to gain entry. This shop has an amazing variety of Thai silks, probably the best selection of any shop I have seen.

    • @bellaferman
      @bellaferman 4 года назад +1

      @@IdeaStudioBKK Thank you so much for your priceless suggestions. I will be sure to followup on all of them. One more question for you if you don't mind. I hope to be in Bangkok for 10 days at the end of February 2021, and then on to Hanoi. In your opinion, would it be better to purchase silk in Bangkok or in Hanoi? Many thanks for your kindness in taking the time to reply. Peace!

    • @IdeaStudioBKK
      @IdeaStudioBKK  4 года назад

      Bella Ferman good question. the silks in Thailand and vietnam are a bit different in a few ways so its going to depend on your preferences and what you want to use it for. they each have a slightly different feel as each country weaves and dyes a bit different. So it will depend on your preferences and what you are making.
      ive seen a lot more imitation silk in vietnam that is trying to be passed as real silk, so thats something to be aware of.

      hot pepper the fabrics at the China World mall are very cheap. Very very cheap. But K Fabric is fairly expensive because that fabric is premium. But still cheaper than the US for similar quality.
