    I agree with Karsten on this one. People take letterboxd way too seriously. like it or not, most people use this site causally and for the most part it’s basically just a comments section for a movie.
    If you have a specific standard for Letterboxd film reviews that’s fine but I don’t think it’s reasonable to think everyone should feel the same way

      Letterboxes is supposed to be a kind of social platform. As social beings, sometimes we express our thoughts on film and art with jokes or one-liners.
      Karsten does this too, but the reason people listen to him isn't because he writes funny one-liners but also because he sometimes has some genuinely good critiques on film. He is thoughtful sometimes and jokes other times. If he only did one-liners, then I don't think people would take him seriously. He would just be a comedian then. If everyone on letterboxd did one-liners, the site would be somewhat of a joke site. Also criticism is subjective. Sometimes we have 'just' have opinions and sometimes those opinions aren't rational. If I watch 50 movies in a month, in not going to want to extensively review every single one. If one wasn't particularly interesting, I'm probably going to just brush by it.

    it's just letterboxd. It's not THE only place you can review a film. It really doesn't matter. People can criticize films how they want. People can criticize criticisms how they want. Karsten can criticize those criticisms how he wants, and you can criticize Karsten's criticisms how you want. But it's just letterboxd.

    I read a lot of letterboxd reviews and the silly one-liners typically get liked the most with many people joking around with it. I don't understand what Karsten is yapping about. I think more serious reviews deserve more love, especially when they put a lot of effort into them.

    Fully agree with Karsten, just let people post whatever they want. If you want one liners you'll find them. If you want longer more informed opinions they'll be there too, theres this thing called scrolling you know. Like i'm sure theres lots of vidoes on youtube that I don't like but guess what.... I don't have to watch them. Saying that because people like Karsten have a big following so they should be held to a higher standard is a bit unfair. It is very obvious that Letterboxd is basically social media but for film, people take it way too seriously. It's becoming like twitter, where people shit on their favourite creators for not being activists.

    Honestly, I watch Karsten to see if I missed any gems in a given month, but as a critic, I find his reviews kind of soulless. I feel like I should be able to figure out his taste in film, but it's so scattershot and random that it's hard to grasp what he routinely likes and what he doesn't. I go by the Dunkey rule where if you can get a vibe for what they like and then they end up either hating something they'd typically like or loving something they'd typically hate, then they've formed a solid ground as a critic and I love vibing with that. It lets me know what his typical responses will be and what I should go to him for. With Karsten, it feels like he's just going through the motions to get reviews out once a week.
    As for his video, I'm of two minds. Yes, let people post what they want, but imho, the one line reviews have kind of worn a bit thin on me. I'll do one once in a blue moon, but if your entire brand is just jokes and you're trying to make a name for yourself as a critic, maybe break the format once in a while to show that you can critique? I don't know, I'm conflicted. I don't think his friend deserved to be completely shit on, but people who do put a lot of effort into their reviews often get overlooked for a quick gag post.

    Letterboxd is ultimately a social media platform with countless different perspectives and styles of writing, which is essentially impossible to control without interference from those running the website. And one liners fuel more than half of LB's engagement so obviously they're never going to get rid of them; it is a business just as much as it is a place to discuss cinema. Everything is about perspective, and believe it or not, that video about the ridiculousness of those who want one line reviews gone trying to achieve it through hateful comments, which was from the perspective of a guy receiving those hateful comments, was ultimately just him being frustrated. Which is valid! Just follow who you want to follow; there's your control. I really believe the most this discourse can achieve is scare some cinema newcomers away from joining in on the conversation or delving further into what the medium has to offer. You have to crawl before you can walk and walk before you can run. Whether you like it or not, yes that means allowing people who ARE NOT official critics on a PUBLIC platform to post bare bones or surface level one line reviews. They may influence the creation of further one line reviews but they will probably not influence the general perception of a film's quality. I started with bare bones sentences, and now I'm writing much stronger things. I have no right to say that people shouldn't be writing one line reviews. In fact, I'd encourage it! And if you're expecting people not to make dumb jokes on the internet... then I think you should disconnect your router because you are going to be quite upset with what you find. Or just stick to the Los Angeles book review and stay away from LB. I've also seen some pretty damn good one liners that are perfect microcosms of an individuals experience with a film from great critics. There's nothing wrong with letting the general public get in on it too. Who knows, maybe one of the countless people who made a SAW X (sucks/socks) joke will turn into the next great film critic. No matter how you spin it with talk of logical fallacies, you are ultimately just doing more harm than good through some ninja ass gatekeeping.

      @SessionsonCinema  8 месяцев назад +2

      I would agree with your definition of it being strictly a social media platform if the site didn't classify posts as reviews and didn't attach them with star ratings. It also does half a dozen other things that try to associate itself as a forum for people who take film seriously. It's not me it's the platform itself. And I'm not gatekeeping the average user. I don't care about their one line reviews. I more so care about people with massive followings, who identify themselves as film critics. Their opinions on film should be more thoughtful than the average user's. And it's important that we hold them to a higher standard of quality to maintain respect for the artform. Nonetheless, thank you for your well worded and well thought out comment.

    Its kinda funny to see people on the comment section sort of defending the large youtuber from the big bad small creator giving criticism of his “so that happened” style of critique
    The idea that it’s “just a comment section stop taking it so seriously” and that “you would be gatekeeping to tell me to stop making letterboxd twitter 2.0” are hypocritical to me because… does ANYONE support Elon’s more lax twitter rules?
    Thats what theyre arguing for. Elon’s Twitter Rules but for Letterboxd. It’s not about gatekeeping or not taking things seriously, because they would call for censorship and the enforcement of standards if people started using the snippy, smug laconic style in quote unquote bad faith
