- What is Pancreatitis? And how would you know if you had it? In this video, lets discuss the symptoms and diagnosis of Pancreatitis!
Do you have severe abdominal pain, specifically in the upper central abdomen, with nausea and vomiting? If so, you may have Pancreatitis, or another condition. This is only the first aspect in the diagnosis of Pancreatitis. It is helpful to understand what sets apart different types of pancreatitis and how those differences impact the clinical course of pancreatitis. What specific labs are ordered and how do those help clarify the diagnosis? What imaging can be ordered and is it necessary for diagnosis? Should antibiotics be given when a person has Pancreatitis and when should they be stopped?
There is a lot of information in this video and I hope it helps you better understand the symptoms and diagnosis of Pancreatitis! In future videos we will discuss the various causes of Pancreatitis, which change the management of this disease.

THANK YOU Dr. Cooper! You may have just solved my mystery illness of the last two years which my doctor had missed entirely! God Bless you!
Thank you for this excellent video. I just returned home from the hospital "yet again" with Acute Pancreatitis but I was given no notification of what is truly going on and therefore will seek out a Gastro doctor at another hospital in my area. I do not have a gallbladder. I am eager to check out your other videos but I do appreciate the calmness and clearness in your voice.
This is super helpful. Thank you.
I'm screwed. I have no gallbladder and my liver enzymes are 498.50 and lipase is
Ive been suffering all year with these exact symptoms, ive list a scary amount of weight. Had ct and mri both look ok , after looking into this condition i am convinced i have this. The pain is nothing like I've felt before and for me right now its almost daily. I am at a loss as what to do, its ao hard in the uk to get the doctors to listen. 😭 Im literally at the end of my limit. Pain is so draining and debilitating.
My son is only 12 and I believe this is what he's suffering from. Do you take anything natural that helps with the pain?
@@dquelch8 Peppermint tea is good, a hit water bottle helps and I've found my posture helps. If I lean slightly back against pillows for instance. I'd also say diet and eating very small and often, chewing really well. Besides those I haven't tried anything else. Hope this helps. I'm so sorry your son is suffering like this is not nice at all.
Had my gallbladder removed
you had yours removed .how do you feel now after it being removed >?@@ssolberg9357
during new years I drank a lot of alcohol with the boys and at some point I had this pain so bad I had to go home for 2 hours. I am now scared to drink alcohol because i dont want to get hurt. Do you have an idea how or why it started for you?
This helped so so much! Thank you
Thank you for the helpful information.
Very helpful, thanks
On January 14, 24, I experienced severe lower abdominal pain radiating ro the back, I wenttoER thinking I had kidney stones but instead it turned out to be a large cyst in the pancreas. I never had nausea or vomiting just during the time of the pain bloatiness which I continue having. I am having a endoscopy with a biopsy next week, GI said whether is malignant or bening it needs to be removed, I live in Frederick , MD but works in Rockville non of the hospitals of this areas do that surger only Georgetown & John’s Hopkins Hospital do.
Update please
Its been awhile, hope you're much better! I have a BUNCH of stomach issues 4 ever , by accident found pancreatic issues( severe 24/7 BURPING they blamed on hiatal hernia) ...hope for relief for us both...yours l hope is GONE❤❤❤❤
Thank you soooo much❤❤❤
Dr it’s a great video ❤
I have gone through MRCP which showed
Mildly enlarged pancreas showing loss of normal pancreatic lobulations with normal signal intensity noted. No peripancreatic fat stranding/collection noted. No focal lesion seen . MPD is not dilated
It it something serious am so scared and my CT scan showed
Pancreas tail looks mildly bulky what it could be
Can you do a video on Autoimmune pancreatitis? I have Hashimotos and have been having these painful flares periodically, which I always thought was from gluten, but it sounds much more like pancreatitis after hearing how the debilitating pain is so similar and spreads to the back. I"m thinking mine is autoimmune related.
Very helpful information. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Great information thank you!
You are welcome!
What if you have low lipase but elevated amylase levels?
My pain isnt in the middle its off to the side pain starts there wraps around left waist then kidney
Me too. Did you ever find out what it was?
@@Tina-xj9rjme also, just started a few days ago. I think it’s this medication they have me on for my diabetes.
I have a burning sensation in my back after eating. My gall bladder was removed more than 10 years ago. All my doctor wants to do is put me on omeprazole full time. What can i do?
I wish you were my doc I'm going through hell and pain everything you described from nausea vomiting severe abdominal pain back pain my doc keeps doing scopes. I told him I'm worried about my weight loss 130 lb in 7 months without trying. That alone should have been a red flag for my doc I'm so tired of going back and forth to the ER. I've been having symptoms since before 2015 when my gallbladder was removed.
Is it possible Dr.Cooper that IPMN's on the head. neck and tail of the pancreas (non-high grade dysplasia) some side-branch that moved into main duct but no dilation seen on MRCP can cause Chronic Pancreatitis? N.B. lipase and amylase normal....blood work normal..but LUQ pain, nausea, steatorrhia present..IgA high. progressively worsening....
Dr cooper what causes these enzymes to get released prematurely, I had 2 life taking pain episodes of stomach pain I guess it was acute pancreatitis how can I avoid these in future
Very informative. Im in so much pain and not sure if i should go back to the er or if im being dramatic
Please do go back to a doctor. You're not being dramatic.
God bless ❤
Hi thee Dr I been in the hospital twice of it. The worse is can't do number 2. How to take the pain way on the left side and also how can I go bathroom better I been battle since 2015 now it's kind of bad again
I want to know too
Hello Dr. Cooper
What would be an alarming level of lipase? I saw another video on RUclips where the nurse stated 23-300 is a normal range.
Normal range is 13 to 60 U/L
You mean 160. Anything times the 3 fold is pancreatitis.
I've been having pain in my left side, right above my hip bone but inside and radiating towards the back. Waist area. It hurts about 50% of the time when I breathe deeply and especially when I sleep on my left side, it feels like a burning pain. What can cause this? I'm almost 60, no prescriptions, no health issues other than a slow thyroid that happened at menopause. It's worse if I'm a bit constipated.
Sounds like you may be constipated and have stool backed up through your sigmoid and descending colon. I would spend the weekend drinking a lot of miralax and Gatorade to see if it improves. I’d also work to increase fiber in by diet. If you haven’t had a colonoscopy for screening purpose in the past then you should have one.
Well flip that didn't tell me anything, cause I didn't have
any systems till I barfed in the middle of the driveway
taking out the trash & ended up at the hospital for 6 mons
cause my gallbladder & pancreas was in bad shape at
the same time but they had to work on my pancreas 1st
B-4 they could do anything with my gallbladder.
I was diagnosed with epi due to a small amount of atrophy seen on the tail of my pancreas. I never had pain and it's strange I have severe enzyme deficiency with only a small amount of atrophy and never had pains.
You'd think I would have had episodes of acute or chronic pains so it is definately a strange one.. MRCP in a few days and hopefully something can explain it. I hear pancreatitis is some of the worst pain you can experience so I'm at least thankful I haven't had to experience it.
Wha happend ? What is your report ? Do you acute pancreatitis with out pain ?
@@pamusaikrishna375 still waiting for results. No pains from acute pancreatitis. I am unsure if u can have chronic WITHOUT pains either. They are theorising I may have pancreatic divisum. Only POSSIBLE cause. I should know more in a week or so.
Dr Cooper. I have a burning right under my left rib like a inch down, been mostly dull not stabbing pains, been going on about two weeks. Not sure if it's spleen, pancreas or stomach. What would your guess be? I plan on going to the e-r if it worsens or doesn't let up. Ty in advance if you happen to be bored and respond
Hello Rick. I am not a doctor and I had your same experience for almost 8 months until I got really sick. I had tests done and an ultra sound to see if it was my gallbladder, liver, kidney or pancreases. At 57 years old ...and never going to a doctor ...I was happily surprised when the doctors thoughts and assumptions were all wrong. Absolutely zero gallstones, blood work looked fabulous and on the ultra sound ... no fatty liver just as the blood work said. Try seeing if eating excess fat or drinking alcohol will trigger your symptoms. If so - please do your blood work and see a professional!
Could a meal with lots of bacon fat trigger pancreatitis if they have no gallbladder?
Yes it could but more likely it would just cause indigestion.
I was recently hospitalised for 2 days put on an Iv drip and paracetamol and diagnosed with acute pancreatitis after bloodwork showed raised Lipase levels. I was quite shocked tbh as Although I felt uncomfortable I Wasn't in a great deal of pain probably 5 or 6 out of 10 and it just felt like an annoying bout of indigestion that woke me up during the night and played up after large meals. I was told that a recent binge drink was the cause which i found even more shocking as I only occasionally drink (once a month) however when I do its white Spirits and to get drunk, On further investigation sludge was detected in my gallbladder and in retrospect I can recall feeling a similar mild sensation in this location for approx 6 months whilst lying down prior to this attack.I have to go back for a scan in 6 weeks to see if the sludge will turn into gallstones ...would this be considered a mild case of pancreatitis? and is it likely that the alcohol caused the sludge or that the sludge as been building up over a period of time ?
I was diagnosed with mild pancreatitis after taking antibiotics but the scans shows normal. If yours is mild, be very strict with your diet so that your pancreas can heal after 6-12 months
