    My mom wanted to play this but has only ever played Animal Crossing. She struggled a little bit with it but got through it and was really happy and excited. Sometimes those of us who play games often forget what it’s like for people who have never picked up a controller. That being said, I agree that it feels a little wrong that because it’s Peach, it’s simple & agree about the performance as well. I struggle to believe this deserves the $60 price tag.

      I feel that way about the difficulty level too. I thought that so much about the criticism around Wonder with adults saying how much easier they found it than Mario when they were a kid. And like yeah, they were kids and theyve now been playing games like 30 years. I wondered (ugh) if any of the people making that criticism had small children in their families or if they just like super trained their kids on games like dance moms so they aren't allowed to be mediocre, lol. I know the kids in my life struggled with Mario Wonder.
      PPS is absolutely intended as a kids game, but it will work for very casual or cosy gamers too.

      Yeah wth is with arlo? he's been getting weirdly nitpicky and seems to be losing his scope lately, It seems like he forgot that just because it doesnt have the technical depth of street fighter doesnt mean its a game for 5 year olds. My wife for example finds it charming and I have to agree. Peach is literally going around giving people hope in a dark time, Its so nice compared to everything else available and it would seem silly to gatekeep that with pointless difficulty or complexity.
      As for the price, lets be honest, if it were 40 everyone would be complaining they did peach dirty and wouldnt buy the game because "Nintendo doesnt believe its worth full price"

      @@daniel8181I agree so wholeheartedly. I have three daughters, one of which is a _gamer_. This will be too easy for her, but she loves watching others play. The other two are dying to play this, and one has played the demo. For her, this is the first game she hasn’t needed help, and she’s 14. She was so happy and achieved flow right away, something she otherwise never manages in games. All three were gushing and squealing around the TV during the entire demo about how adorable everything was and how her voice is so pretty and the costumes! And the theets! And the stars are so cute!
      I don’t know-maybe Arlo isn’t a game reviewer. When it’s a game made for him, then it seems like he is a reviewer, because the review matches the audience. But there’s no attempt to review a game from a neutral perspective or from the intended audience’s perspective. So, if I think of Arlo as just a guy who’s obsessed with video games, has been playing them forever and adores talking about them, then it’s fine. But it’s not really reviewing games a lot of the time.

    • @daniel8181
      @daniel8181 8 месяцев назад +23

      @@princessnavi8815 The obvious retort here is "difficulty settings" but this fails to take into account that:
      -Devs seem hellbent on not letting you adjust them
      -This fails to address the issue of game tone
      -You cant really fix confusing games with a difficulty change (think of how much "game language" you know that they dont, like "always shoot red barrels")
      -It is actually hard to balance difficulties (which makes it even more annoying that you cant later change them)
      Its so much nicer to just make games for differing tastes and experience, and for the gamers to accept that not everything has to be about them. Look how many MILLIONS of more zelda fans there are now because Nintendo decided to make a game for everyone, as opposed to a few million "hardcore" people that weren't buying the games anymore anyway. Nintendo feels like the only company that wants me to play games with my family as opposed to locking myself in a dark room to be lonely with a 60 dollar time sink.

      Yeah that definitely seems to be who it’s made for. Which, as an adult, I’m a little sad about, but there’s definitely a way to make it for all ages, like your usual Kirby or Mario games, but I’m not so sure this game does that :/ maybe it’s just bc these are tutorials at the beginning, but I’ll try not to get my hopes up too much

      @@rhettmitchellit's easy to forget this as adult gamers but even your usual kirby's and Mario's are too complex and challenging for a newcomer to finish. I had Mario and Pikmin 9n the Wii before I hit double digits, and I enjoyed them, but not as much as i enjoyed kirby epic yarn (a game criticised for being too easy, even for a kirby game). Epic yarn was the first game I ever finished, and my brother and I have probably clocked a few hundred hours just having fun and replaying our favourite levels, because it was the only game we had that felt welcoming and fun rather than a frustrating challenge. My point is, this game will have a very important and special place for other young gamers now. And I know it sucks when a cool looking game isnt for you, but we experience that with adult/everyone games too, like loving the concept of pokemon but hating the gameplay for example, I'm sure you can think of times you've personally experienced this for reasons other than target audiences age. I just dont want to see this game getting slandered because it wasnt made with adult gamers in mind, you know?

    Actually really glad to hear this game is simple. My daughter's eighth birthday is days after the launch and, while she loves video games and has been playing them for ages, her skill level is pretty low. She regularly loses to the computer during Mario Party, even when playing on easy. But she loves games, and especially loves Peach. Plus, she is very into fashion and outfits. Essentially, this game was made for her. We have a new baby coming any day now, and this game is the perfect birthday present for when we have a new baby and can't do very much. Gameplay she won't need help to master with a character and premise she heavily identifies with. There are times to challenge her game skills and reach for mastery. This isn't it, and I am so glad to hand this to her.

    For me the biggest issue here isn’t the difficulty, it’s that the game is way too simplistic.
    Take Kirby as an example: are Kirby games easy? Yes, obviously. Are they simplistic? Not at all! Kirby has such a great variety of moves that make every moment of gameplay feel at least a bit interesting.
    Peach Showtime on the other hand just has that feeling where all you do is walk up to The Thing and press The Button. I guess that’s engaging for really young children, but so are Kirby games with all their optional complexity.

      This I can agree with. I'm not the biggest fan of Kirby games due to the difficulty, but I can 100 percent understand the appeal of multiple weapons as a person that puts a lot of stock into replayability. Specifically, though, you hit the nail on the head here with your last sentence. Here a few people have said "it isn't for me, it's for others" and I mean no hate to those people, it's fine to think that. But in my opinion, what is the other audience here? Young children. But like you say here, yeah they're for younger children, but Kirby games (other games too speaking broadly) can be as well. So with things like this, I do think it's a valid criticism. Why limit the audience when Nintendo games tend to be about bringing a lot of audiences together?

    • @Debloko666
      @Debloko666 8 месяцев назад +34

      @@Cheesehead302 In this game's case the "others", in my opinion, would be people who likes simplicity. That want a game just to relax and have a chill time. Neither hard or complex, just to play, have fun, and for a moment forget the problems you may be having. And there is nothing wrong in that. Not everyone want to arrive at home after a long day at work or school, and play a complex tactical RPG or puzzle game that requires a lot of thinking, or a hardcore game that requires many attempts and perfect play to complete it. Peach's Showtime looks to me like one of these simple games that you play to just enjoy yourself, like Kirby's Epic Yarn, Animal Crossing, or any farming game. Can be a fun time, but not for all.
      Of course, we are having this opinion just based on the demo, which has the first 2 levels. Who knows what else this game has to offer in later stages, although... I have a feeling the dificulty will not change much during the endgame.

    I played the demo yesterday and I thought it was fine. I can understand the criticisms you have, but I feel like this is going to be one of those games that's largely focused on the presentation, and the gameplay is merely just a means to let you observe the world. It's kind of like those old school LucasArts games like Monkey Island or Sam & Max; you don't play them for the actual pointing and clicking, you play them for the silly and inventive characters and scenarios they have on display.
    Keep in mind, this is mostly just my assumptions based on the two levels we got from the demo. I feel like the later stages and gameplay styles will be a bit more involving than what Swordfighter Peach and Baker Peach (because I'm too dumb to remember the actual name lol) gave us in what are clearly meant to be tutorial levels for their respective outfits

    I don't think its silly to engage with the game on a critical level, I actually really appreciate it! Between the growing laziness in big entertainment corporations like nintendo and disney, the looking down upon of children's media, and this being like, only the SECOND time peach (The only major female character in Mario) has ever gotten a spin off, it's really important to critically engage with media like this! it's such a shame that the gameplay doesn't have depth, I would've loved to play another peach spin off game after growing up on the one with the parasol and emotions. I just wish peach's game was treated with as much respect as mario's are

      So because it’s made for a younger audience it’s ‘disrespectful’? If the game was actually cheaper like people want it to be, would that be disrespectful too? Because Nintendo doesn’t believe Peach or a pretty female protagonist is worth as much as Mario? Y’all will criticise literally everything even when it’s not a big deal and then act shocked when you’re called cynics. Go figure. Not everything is made for you and you can’t make a critique while failing to analyse the context.

      @robrobrobot6867 8 месяцев назад +22

      @@MissTwister12I didn't mean to imply that the younger age demographic is the problem, I'm sorry I did. That is not the problem at all, especially since most of Nintendo's library has appealed to younger ages while still being enjoyable for older ages. I didn't even consider the price point, and I don't think it has much bearing on the conversation I'm trying to have.
      I do actually think that Nintendo isn't treating Peach with as much respect as Mario, seeing as she has had two spin off games with a distance of 19 years between them, and he is at the helm of dozens of games. Now that she does have a game, don't you think it's a bit messed up that she isn't given the flexibility of other titles in Nintendo's catalog to appeal to adult demographics (Mario, Zelda, Etc.)? Especially because it is Mario games, a famously versatile game that can appeal to kids and adults alike, that Showtime is a spin off of, without the same effort put into making the game for all ages?
      Making a game complex and yet still accessible. like this is totally possible, and has been done by Nintendo time and time again. For example, pokemon (used to) have ivs, evs, breeding mechanics, natures, items, abilities, and I'm sure even more depth that I don't know about since I'm not in competitive circles, even though it includes very young age ranges.
      This wouldn't be so saddening to me, if it hadn't been the first peach game in NINETEEN years, after her first one in 2005. This will pretty much set a precedent for any more games (if there are any) going forward.
      I suppose it isn't really a big deal, a video game side character isn't getting a good spin off, oH nO. But I wanted to critic this anyway, because as I said, I played the 2005 game for a lot of my childhood, and I never beat it. I love peach, a lot, she's a character that I've always wanted to see regain the spotlight. Only, it's personally disapointing to see her return in this way, a way that because of my experience in video games i can't enjoy as much. It is a bit of a worrying trend though. Nintendo is sort of slipping in terms of games. Like the recent super incomplete and buggy pokemon games, and the UI of TOTK showing that details are not being appreciated and shown the attention they have been in prior Nintendo games.
      Nintendo has always been a staple of gaming, an excellent, well-polished game developer. But now, as I play their games, as Nintendo is worth billions of dollars, I don't find that nigh perfection any more. I find cut corners, a lack of care, and I find Princess Peach's first game in 19 years to lack that Nintendo charm, so far away from the excellence of the very thing it is spinning off, like Mario Odyssey and Mario Wonder. I suppose it will still be a good game for little kids, perhaps a defining one in some of their lives, with its incredible art direction. But I look at it, and because I love it, see its potential, know its history, and its place among the growing mediocrity of Nintendo, I can't help but wish it could be more. More like the masterpieces that used to come out of nintendo.
      Shit I should just scrap this comment and write an essay with how much I wrote, lol.
      TLDR: I'm just sad that my best girl peach doesn't have the best game she can. And the lack of care she has been afforded in appealing to all ages shows a way that Nintendo has been slowly falling into mediocrity.
      This thing is so long, I should just scrap it and write an essay lol.

      As for not directly publishing them, the initial quality of the game is not their fault, but they are still publishing them. It is nintendo's responsibility to make sure that the pokemon games are high quality, as that is partially the job of a publisher. We wouldn't have gotten the insanely broken and buggy release of Scarlet and Violet if the Pokemon company had not been okay with the quality of it.
      Pokemon still has Evs and breeding and stuff, but in recent generations there have been weird inconsistencies and trivializations of the mechanics. For example, the infamous exp share, the ability to train EVs through a minigame in X & Y (I believe it's X & Y, its one of the 3Ds games for sure), and Legends Arceus has neither abilities nor breeding mechanics plus it adds a way to change natures through a consumable item. Those are the ones I can think off of the top of my head.

    to me, it was pretty obvious right away that this game wasn't made for hardcore gamers who've been playing games for a long time. i bet kids will love this. it has very Barbie energy, with Peach rapidly changing personas.
    however, as a kid's game, i do have a criticism. why does Nintendo insist on never having voice acting in these games? if young kids are supposed to play this, it expects them to do a lot of quick reading.

      But its good for kids to pick up on how to quick read especially now that literacy rates and levels are at an all time low. Its E10+/Pegi7 so around the time when reinforcing stronger reading habits is appropriate. Though voice acting would help to reinforce that too.

Stuff like the post game True Arena content where the difficulty ramps up, or inputs like a fighting game style quarter circle for Kirby’s fighter ability to use the hadoken like move faster and stronger, or other more complicated input methods for moves certain copy abilities have (though those kind of moves weren’t really brought into Forgotten Land so they may stick as a 2D Kirby only thing).

    From what I hear, this game was created by the same studio that created Yoshi's Crafted World: another game that people say is too easy, doesn't feel very snappy to play, uses craft elements, and relies heavily on its charm. I watched my partner play the demo and the little guys (called "Theets" by the way) are adorable, the visuals are very pretty, and certain elements are indeed very charming (like purifying the birds stealing the sweets so they aren't evil anymore lol). So it's INCREDIBLY charming, but even just as an onlooker I felt that the game just didn't really have a "flow" if you know what I mean?
    And yeah, the more you talked about this being more like a game for children than a game for everyone, the more I could see what you mean. It's a shame that just because Peach is the star, she has to go on a "fake" adventure through plays in an overly easy game instead of an "actual" adventure intended for everyone. But it is what it is, I suppose.

  • @OvenFreshBread
    @OvenFreshBread 8 месяцев назад +3

    I agree with one of the last points you make. I really don't like how because it's Peach that means a game starring her has to automatically be made so easy and boring that only little kids will like it. Mario games like Wonder give you options with characters that can't die so even younger children can play it no problem. There is no reason to not do the same for a Peach game other than the assumption that no adult (or to be more precise - no adult men) would ever want to play a game with a pink girlie-girl protagonist so why bother, right?
    I'm happy for all the young kids who will enjoy this game but I can't help but be disappointed that they didn't create something more with this.

    Learning that this game is developed by Good Feel (if rumors are to be believed) really puts things in perspective. Good Feel started by making a bunch of educational games for children 5 and under for DS in the 2000s. Yoshis Crafted World and their Kirbys Epic Yarn have continued this focus- very simple, approachable games for young gamers.
    So it’s fair to be a bit disappointed by some of the game design decisions, but it’s totally intentional and makes sense if the target demographic is 5 year olds. This isn’t a game for everyone, it’s for (very) young gamers.

    I think the biggest warning sign in the demo that this game isn't going to get any less simple is that Swordfighter Peach doesn't even have a spin attack. Such a limited moveset does not bode well for people hoping that later Swordfighter levels are going to be more demanding.

    I also felt the same way when it comes to depth of gameplay and the degree of polish (or not enough thereof) for an $80 CAD retail game.
    Focusing more on the presentation side of things and catering towards the younger audience doesn't mean it has to be at the expense of stripping depth from the gameplay. From what I've seen in the demo, the experience remains identical regardless of the playthrough, since there isn't much complexity behind the actions Peach can do and that there isn't any replay incentive outside the collectibles.
    The dodge mechanic of Swordfigther Peach feels inconsistent and isn't clearly explained well. Sometimes it works, but inexplicably not the other times. And at no point in the game explicitly shows the dodge timing and what it actually does, leading myself to "randomly" win mob and boss fights. Turns out that I was supposed to hit the jump button when a shockwave or enemy gets very close to Peach, but again the timing is unclear.

    And considering that I've heard rumors that this is made by the same team that made Wario Land: Shake It, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Yoshi's Woolly World, and Yoshi's Crafted World, I'm not expecting much of a challenge in this game. Yeah. I realize that I as a 20 year old man should not be the one making these takes, but it feels like every time a game is made that is specifically trying to aim itself at girls, it's always got to be absurdly easy, the kind of game that doesn't present many challenges at all (like Animal Crossing), or try to hide the fact that it's girly so it can market itself to all genders. I know the idea of things being "for girls" is something that has probably done more harm than good, but it really feels like AAA game devs cannot concieve the fact that a game can specifically for girls and not need to coddle them at all times. Animal Crossing getting progressively more and more scared to make their villagers rude to the player I think is another good example of this.

Played the demo and it’s definitely not too easy when you have a disability in your hand, I actually really appreciate that it’s only two buttons. I was getting tired of games repeating mechanics left and right and am glad to see some creativity in gaming again. Everything feels stale and same-y. Peach feels like, well. Peach. I watched as she played and it reminded me a lot of Kirbys Epic Yarn, so I’m not surprised to hear they’re by the same team. I would bet that in the full game even though completing the game will be very easy (like kirbys epic yarn) getting every bonus/time trial goal will be more challenging for those who want it. I think it’s a great approach for casual gamers and young kids, which is clearly the audience. But since we only saw the first two levels I’d wait and see if there’s any optional, more challenging modes (even like a new game plus or something) so there may even be some enjoyment for more seasoned players too

    Something I noticed that I haven't seen anyone talk about is that the dress ribbons you gain seem to have an effect on Peach's base stats. It might just be my imagination, but after I got the patissier dress ribbon, it seemed like Peach's base movement speed went from "why is she moving so slow??" to a much more reasonable speed that actually felt good to play.
    Not sure what the swordfighter dress ribbon does, but my guess would be increasing jump height. The effect seems to stack as well, so having the patissier dress ribbon while being patissier Peach makes her move even faster, and having the swordfighter dress ribbon while being swordfighter Peach seems to make her jump reach further.
    If I'm correct about this and not just imagining it, then Princess Peach Showtime is going to be a very "earn your fun"-type game, which bodes well. Maybe there will even be special moves (like the backflip so sorely missing from Swordfighter Peach's movement) that can be unlocked with further dress ribbons!
    Nintendo did this game dirty by having the demo be the first two levels rather than cherrypicking the best bits to whet people's appetite.
    Still not worth the $60 pricetag imo, though. I am of the firm belief that games should be priced according to how much bang you get for your buck, rather than who's publishing it. If it's on the shorter, simpler side, it should be priced accordingly.

    The moment I saw that this game was going to have Peach in a bunch of different style of gameplays, I knew it'd be a "jack of all trades master of none" situation. They really should've just had *one* thing, *one* idea, and master that for Peach. Who knows, if done right it could even have Peach get her own series of mainline games. Like Yoshi, Luigi, DK, Wario, and even Toad have their own consistent style of games.

    I'm excited for it, especially since I never got Peach's first game, and I want an unapologetically feminine game. The simplicity showing through is annoying, but this is like the Mario version of the transformation route I'd love to see in a Shantae game. And Wonder already took Shantae's elephant transformation.
    I do hope the game gets some challenge and complexity by the end. It'd be really annoying if Peach finally gets a new game and they decide to make it the next entry of the "girl ghetto" list of mediocrity. Like, I do think there's a place for really easy cozy entry level games. But girls and kids in general deserve mental stimulation and quality games. And there's quite a few good videos discussing the subject.

    During the sword Peach stage I was hyped when I figured out that you could start your combos with a forward air attack as an extension for her ground combo when she lands. But then I stopped when I saw that everything dies in three hits and even the sub bosses came down to just quicktime. The only reward for exploration or going off rails are the collectable sparkles, but there really wasn't much else to explore or backtrack for. Even finding some more hidden health recovery drops would have been nice. Iirc you get a couple for helping the little guys but not much else. Super disapointed to hear this, this was easily the nintendo game I've looked forward to most in years. That's in no small part since I have a 6 year old daughter who is obsessed with the Mario IP and mario swtich games right now (though her favorite character is Rosalina) but also, as a grown man all the trailers looked incredible to me, the idea of all those different powers and every level being completely different gameplay instead of just more platforming with slight twists was super exciting.
    Anyway, I'm sure we'll be checking out the demo anyway to judge for ourselves, but this really is a huge let down to hear. Yes my daughter is 6, but when she was only 5 she 100% 3d World, and she refuses to use casual mode on Mario vs DK, and doesn't consider a stage beat unless she perfects it. Needless to say, she doesn't need her hand held and likes a nice challenge.

      Ironically, while she seemed to enjoy the demo overal, the issue actually ended up being the difficulty was too high! She was having a blast until the cookie making part, I'm not sure if its an age related thing or what, cause I didn't find the tapping to mix particularly difficult myself, but my daughter just could not get Peach to mix the batter through tapping the button as fast as her little thumbs can do it. She tried both thumbs and even other fingers, but after 30 minutes of trying, I ended up having to do that part for her.
      It's not good if both adults like Arlo are finding it too easy and 6 year olds whose 100% 3d world are finding it too hard, you've missed both of your target audiences.
      I didn't actually play it myself (besides doing the mixing for her, which was a HUGE blow to her pride since she wants to do everything herself) but I will say it was fun to watch my daughter play at the least, its visually a joy to behold.
