Banning game sometimes also makes people want to play a game they didn't originally.
At least for me that has happened.
I didn't want to play Manhunt until it had to be taken off store shelves here in Australia.
The game was originally released uncensored with an MA15+ rating.

I heard that most of the enviorment is destructible, and the objective is vague, so I decided to put this to the test. I got into a car, drove into the wall of the party house like I was the Kool-aid man, injuring nobody, and slowly pushed the debris and tables with my car until I reached the second wall, which after a minute I broke through and left the house.

I will always mourn what could have been with We Happy Few (for me, at least, it's Silent Hills/PT-like in that regard). The initial game footage released was fascinating; the playable demo was gorgeous; then somewhere between the demo and the full game release, something...happened. The game we got at the other end of that was flawed, glitchy, and buggy in non-viable ways. (There were at least four places where, if an event didn't properly trigger, players simply *could not* finish the game past that point, and it was throwing-things levels of frustrating.)
It could have been great. Instead, it's likely forever aligned as an artifact of its times, and no one but game historians will care.

The ban on We Happy Few is especially groanworthy because it's very obvious that these are not recreational drugs to make people happy, they're mind control drugs, and that's a bad thing. I remember when the news of that broke and everyone was basically just going "is this satire?" I'm not really a fan of censorship but for the other games I can at least see where they're coming from with it. Hatred feels a little too close to certain real life mass shootings and even Silent Hill fans mostly thought the gore in Homecoming was over the top. The gore & gib effects were no worse than the original, just different & imo cartoonishly over the top, always made me think of Unreal & Quake. On which note... It's not a single person. The board of people "banning" those games in germany consists of multiple people from different backgrounds. There are people from the church, teachers, psychologists, judges, prosecutors, caretakers from children and teen institutions and so on. They play those games, take notes, then discuss at a table which rating the media should receive.
The issue is that they can also straight up refuse to give a rating if they see it as not just potentially harmful to children but also harmful for adults and overall society. And if the publisher goes ahead and still releases, but the federal review board agrees with rating group, then it might additionally get put on the index.
It is important to say, that it being on the index is still not really a straight up ban as in making those games fully illegal like how you might imagine.
In germany games on the index are still allowed to be sold to adults, but you are not allowed to advertise them in any shape or form. Not even list them as store inventory on a public website or have them visible in a physical store on the shelf.
But it is fully legal as an adult to go to a store, ask for an indexed game and if they have it, they are allowed to sell it to you. Some stores even have a separate room, you can ask for access as an adult, where you can see all kinds of restricted stuff you arent allowed to show openly, and buy indexed media legally. It is also not illegal to buy uncensored or indexed versions from neighbouring countries, especially austria or switzerland are popular due to being the same language.
This system still hurts the german media market though, because potentially having your game on an index basicly means very little to no sales, so publishers often censor media for germany prematurely or right after a refused rating but before they are put on the index.

    1. FEAR 2 takes place RIGHT AFTER the first game, not 11 months later. In fact, the explosion from the end of 1 sets off the events in 2.
    2. Becket isn't there to investigate ANYTHING. He's a special forces operative there to take the CEO of the antagonist corporation into protective custody. There is no investigation. There is no missing research team.
    3. The replica soldiers aren't clones of Alma. If anything, they're clones of the first game's antagonist, Paxton Fettel.
    4. The city doesn't "change." The aforementioned explosion causes nuke-level damage to it and you have to navigate the wreckage.

We have shows like Invincible and The Boys that don’t shy from showing the gruesome reality. Then there’s movies like John Wick, Extraction that show graphic violence… grow up, there’s no way all that is banned in Germany and Australia. It was banned in a number of countries, and still technically is banned in Australia, although they do not stop Steam from selling it as far as I know. The reasons vary by country, but most it was the extreme gore in fully acted not animated movie cutscenes (the game was groundbreaking for that at the time) and Australia's primary reason was an implied SA (in that there is no nudity, but it's obvious the implication) to show the supernaturally deteriorating mental state of the protagonist's husband.

In Germany violence against Humans and everything that resembles Humans/Humanoid is not liked by Law in general,
we are also not allowed to own Paper targets that resemble humanoid shapes.
Also if Violence is against humans limb lost or mutilation is very rare to find in games that ran through the german qualifications.
Also extreme violence is also forbidden like execution/finishing moves or beat downs.
But it's much softer by now alot of games have it or a censored version of it and if it doesnt it is mostlikely an english game anyways

The thing about germany is, that we are very sensitive about graphic violence. Your guess is as good as mine but I think it has something to do with protecting the children. It's pretty easy in germany to get your hands on a +18 game as a minor. I think that may be the main reason. But the topic 'violence' in germany is pretty much the same as nudity in public media in the US. I know that nudity is a sensitive thing in the US but in germany it's pretty normal. So it could also be a cultural reason

To be fair to Germany here ... most of these games were banned before the system was revised a few years ago. Nowadays there are not many games left which are actually banned. And even in germany - a ban only meant you could not get the game under 18 unless it was actually forbidden. There is a distinction.
But yeah ... it sucked. And if you want to include all bannings in germany you can start at Wolfenstein and work your way up thtough mostly any game that included more than a hint of blood up until ~2010... ish. Nowadays if a game has a rating it stays that way. Only rare occasions are actually being banned and not even Wolfenstein falls under that category any more as games are finally considered more of an artform and context maters. Before that even the Indiana Jones 3 adventure game was censored in germany. Knowing that australia has similar regulation to germany this list feels rather uneventful to me. :P

Also, you never see security zombies in the german version (zombies that are covered in riot gear, but you can still defeat them, because of lack of armor in the back) because "violence towards law enforcement or authority figures" (i heard it from somewhere)
Hatred is somewhat of a stress ball of a game, like the first level, ok, easy enough, not too many or/and strong enemies, but when you finish it, going forward gets really boring, as you mow down swat units, homeless in the sewers, people with guns of their own, then you get on the train, ope there is a stop, obliterate everyone there, in the train station you encounter National Guard, get to downtown, same thing, then you frankly get bored by the time you get to the army base (you can actually cheese it by getting a respawn point after you got the bomb by just dying, granted, no armor, but you begin the level in a humvee anyway) Also, keep in mind, that game was made in unreal engine in 2017.

Yeah, some people with mental problems might take it too seriously. But that doesn’t mean the game is “influential”. That’s just mean countries need better support system to help people before they go over the edge and do something unthinkable. People can do dangerous crime “inspired” by most innocent pieces of media. Even though they usually choose some violent edgy shit. But we all know even without those media people do bad things.

hey germany here, just wanna clarify a few things here.
for most of these titles, i didnt even know that they are "banned" or "not allowed" here in germany, because most of us use international releases anyways.
not because of any ban restrictions or so, but simply because of sooner releases and a better usage of sites like kinguin and such.
so unless you are a something like a "hard copy console gamer", you wouldnt mostly even realize that those games are "banned".
or as an example for you americans............
you know that mr satan from dragonball is called mr hercules in the usa.
but you dont mind because as an anime watcher, you are only watching the japanese dub with english subs anyways, in which he is called mr satan.
    its kinda like that.
so yeah, its different, but as long as you stay with the source, its all fine and dandy no matter where you life.
