I saw Sammy perform in 1988. He did this song and got a standing ovation... I clapped so hard my hands hurt. You can't really sum up the talent of this man in words... When I saw him for the first and only time in 88 he was reaching the end of his life, and despite being a heavy smoker man did he still have the lung power! I never saw an audience so in awe of a performer quite like I did that night. He was a true master! Although he was a fairly small man, put him on that stage and he was the tallest man in the world! We won't ever see talent quite like this again...
Bluetone Pony You know why I think that is? There are people out there who can sing and dance I guess, but the biggest thing that is missing between those people and someone like Sammy Davis is CLASS! Sammy had class, grace, style... Those things seem unimportant in the entertainment industry of today.
Who nowadays can sing or entertain like this? Making music on computers has took the soul out of music i don't care what anyone says - can i get a thumbs up if you agree? : P
I'm 22 years old and never got the chance to see him perform live, though i can listen to him forever, I put a thumbs up on this video back in 2008 and now almost christmas 2014 I'm listening to it for the 100000 time thanks to my stepdad making me grow up showing me what actual music is! Music made nowadays can't cope with this, not in the long run! This is something we really should preserve for future generations so they can hear this too!!!
The first concert my dad took me to was Sammy Davis. I remember as a kid both my Dad and I tearing up watching him do Bojangles. My Dad loved Sammy. Watching this again flashed me back to my youth and I cried a small river. This song has more meaning to me now then ever. I wish he would come back and dance. Thx Sammy. You are missed.
Your dads a sage, saw the pack in '88 Vancouver,BC It was, an epiphany, Liza took Deans place soon after, like her,but sorry to say. Felt extremely lucky to know, truely what Amore's about
Frank maybe the greatest singer of all time but i must agree that Sammy is the greatest entertainer of all time ...Singer , dancer, comedian, storyteller, and at this moment i can,t think of the word but he does voices of other people too...
What an entertainer. This song stops me cold with its power mixed with raw and heartfelt emotion. Young performers should study this performance. He gave himself and the audience was riveted.
What an artiste. Singing, dancing and acting. A great deal of talent and a lifetime of experience goes into producing such a consummate performance. Nothing, and no one around today compares to this. This is entertainment at it's peak.
Absolutely. This guy was probably The greatest entertainer of all time. Brilliant singer, performer, comedian, impressionist, drummer, dancer. Was there anything he couldn't do superbly? He wasn't a great swimmer!!! Very sadly missed. Justin Beiber and the current crop of mediocrity don't come close.
My name is Bo. My father really wanted to have kids and played this when I was just born. One year after that he drowned. This song is the most special song in the world to me, whenever it gets on I have to listen to it till the end. And when I go to my father I want this to be played at my funeral. R.I.P. dad
Without a shadow of doubt, this has to be one of the greatest performances of all time. This is what happens when it comes from the heart. God Bless you Mr Davis.
I sang this near the end of the evening at my gig tonight. Dedicated to my "little brother", Clipper, who was my 1st Westie. He's been gone 20 years in Febuary. Never got over him. I'd be lying if I said I didn't shed a tear in the singing of it. After 20 years he still grieves.............. Love you little buddy.
Proud to say i went out with him for a week in 1968 he was a true gent and he also met my son Stak who was 6 month old a wonderful memory he had two wardrobes full of tap shoes in the penthouse apartment at the bunny club in London
I met Mr. Davis at a small bowling alley in 1979 in Las Vegas. He was there with Lola Falona, and a couple of other greats. He bowled 66 that night. I have a few pictures as I had my friend go to our home and get my camera. It was such a fun time. He's a treasure, for sure.
On any given Saturday morning , it was cleaning day in a three bedroom home in a blue collar home outside of Detroit with my 8 sister's & brothers.. My parents played Sammy, Frank, Dean , Motown , Big Band , ecetra.. I'm honored & humbled to have been able to hear all of them Angels sing on an old fashioned stereo cabinet.. Dammit people, we all & I mean all need more of life's little things !!! Slow down & stop feeling compelled to compete & keep up with the bullshit..
What an awesome interpretation of a truly beautiful song! This man died empty - what talent!! Now listen up you Contemporaries.. this is how you do it! If you can't have me revited like this then I don't need to listen or watch you! Hats off to Sammy Davis Jr. for leaving us with such great music!
I saw him in person at South Lake Tahoe during the early 1970's. He sang Mr. Bojangles just as he did on this video. Great performance. Watching this brings back so many memories of the time.
I had forgotten how good Sammy Davis was until I heard him an the Bob Roberts show on radio sussex on sunday night thanks Bob. in fact yep he was good a great song and dance man.
All i can say is FANTASTIC,i wish we had performers like this nowadays, this makes me so happy and when i listen closely it reminds me of of all my memories from my life.
1971: I was so depressed, hating my job, very few friends, a confused young man living with the consequences of choosing not to go to college and regretting it. I was driving home from work one day, and this song came on. Though I had heard it before, I listened to it for the first time. It made me cry, but then there was a relief, and I found way to be happy again by joining an acting troupe. I never became a great actor, but I did get beyond my paralyzing self-pity!
Saw the great man many times and was utterly privileged to see him sing this song live. In my opinion Sammy Davis Jnr. had one of the finest voices of his era. And what a dancer!
Every time I watch and heard this song cry now, always like this song, but not that my Dad and my Grandparents rest in heaven, the song brings me plenty of good memories, I heard Sammy, Frank, Dino for my Grandparents and my dad, thanks for sharing what was and is real good music
Songs with a beautiful, albeit sad story, this is one of the worlds greatest performers. Sadly I never got to see him live, and I am greatly disappointed by that. But the joy of youtube means I can watch, to my hearts content Sammy's various songs and performances, Thank you uploading this. RIP Sammy we miss you.
Only one guy I know can dance as good as Sammy and Mr Bojangles....Boab Mellon by name and Boab Mellow by nature. Won't You Come Back and Dance....... Much Love Mate. xx
Refinement, class, stunning,super-duper the best version that I saw ever Mister Sammy David please back ,sing, dance dance♪ thanks Markflem for uploading this marvelous video Greetings from Belgium have wonderful Crhistmas Alex and Lisa ♪♪♪♥♪♪♪
very happy to see this video jump from 500k views to almost 800k views. Sammy Deserves it, he was one of the best entertainers that we ever had the privilege of watching. there will never be another, and will never be another "Rat Pack" we have lost all of the greats, and are left with complete garbage these days. i can only pray for a music revolution in my lifetime. i need it. RIP sammy, thank you for the 64 years you gave us, i wish it could have been more, but that would be selfish. LUV!!!
This guy's music is fantastic. Gotta love the classic blues/soul. And this is coming from a death metal singer/drummer - this really comes from the heart, and I love it. Good music is music that comes from the bottom of your soul, and Sammy Davis's music is exactly that.
Sammy was persecuted for most of his life, but he kept on singing; kept on dancing. He owns this song- so much so that others should just leave it be now- Perfect. Like the man, this is incredible.
This is by far the best version i've found online, many thanks for uploading! This song gives perfect focus, i've been listening on repeat for around 2 days
Sammy Davis, is one of many fabulous entertainers who have come along...left their mark... and made their exit when their curtain came down. I'm sure like many who have seen this video, I am moved to tears. That's the difference between an artist and a simple entertainer. Sammy, like his contempories in music Andy Williams, Dean Martin, Perry Como etc. Put their heart and soul into their work. They lived to entertain, and died leaving us with a lifetime of beautiful memories. Thanks guys.
first time i have watched this video/heard this song tonight, and i have absolutely fallen in love with this video, i don't have any way better to put it. the man was a true CLASSY LEGEND, that broke so many taboo barriers in his career/life. Sammy we are truly grateful for all you gave to us in your 64 years on this planet, i would be selfish to say i wish we had more, but it was ur time to go. you said it best, you would rather die than lose your voice.
I think this is my favourite rendition. Maybe it's because he's getting older, a little slower, a little more wistful, but then all of sudden he belts out the high notes as though he were still in his prime.
I am so glad someone else feels the same way. Let me put it to you in another way.. If most of TODAYS artists got up on stage, sat down on a bar stool, no fancy props, no fancy lights, no fancy fireworks, no fancy synthisizers, no half naked woman with T &A's handing out, just them on that bar stool and started to sing... EVERYBODY WOULD GO HOME !
Thank you Jerry, for writing the song. Thank you Sammy, for taking the song to a higher level. Thank you RUclips, for making this able. Thank you markflem, for uploading this great quality video. Thank you emotions, for responding to this magic. So glad to be alive.
My husband and I saw Sammy Davis in person at Resorts Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, N.J. What a great performance by him! He sang and danced to this song.
By far, bar none, the Greatest Entertainer ever! Of course there were many great singers and dancers and actors and drummers and impressionist and musicians, Etc, but how many can say that they could do all those things? This man could do all those things and more, pint-sized but perfect, A true gift from the Creator. Thank you Father, I hope you're also enjoying him.🙏😇💓👑🌷

the rat pack, the best and classy bunch of artist this world will ever be able to listen and watch...thanks to all of you for sharing your talent with us...
This version is the best , no disrespect to the Nitty Gritty Dirt band that done the original . Yet this song has nothing to do uith Bill Bojangles robinson .
What an amazing performance. This song celebrates two wonderful legends and great men of this world. Love you both and thank you for paving the way for us.
The world needs entertainers like this to come back onto our plane of existence. Sure there are people like gaga and what not who can perform, but entertain? Thats limited, i dont think there was anyone who could say they disliked these greats. I just pray that they land again soon and come back to their calling

People just don't have it anymore today.
fairly small? He was tiny.
IslandGirl Felecia A tiny person yes, but if you measured him by his talent he was one of the biggest people ever to walk the earth!
KLUNKET Thanks, man.
Who nowadays can sing or entertain like this?
Making music on computers has took the soul out of music i don't care what anyone says - can i get a thumbs up if you agree? : P

What a bunch of lucky bastards those people in the audience are. I'd give my left arm to have seen this live.

The greatest entertainer of all time
Love Sammy but Frank is the greatest
Frank maybe the greatest singer of all time but i must agree that Sammy is the greatest entertainer of all time ...Singer , dancer, comedian, storyteller, and at this moment i can,t think of the word but he does voices of other people too...
One of the greatest singers of all time.
this was me and the wife's first dance, after our wedding, and still and always has brought shivers to my spine, God rest your soul Mr Sammy Davis jr
What an entertainer. This song stops me cold with its power mixed with raw and heartfelt emotion. Young performers should study this performance. He gave himself and the audience was riveted.
One of the most amazing performers/singers of all time. Miss him.

+bahons72
Absolutely. He was awesome.
When an act puts on a bowler hat, and gets a huge round of applause. It's the definition of a respected performer.
+Colin Parry Agree100% Two others come to mind. Charlie Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy.
+jimysohns These people were the definition of MEGASTARS, never to be seen again!! Which makes me kinda sad..
In terms of vocals and dancing, quite simply one of the greatest performances you'll ever have the pleasure of seeing.
even though he didn't write it. this song was meant for him.
how True and clear can words be.....
amen!!
Oh sure it was...
My name is Bo.
My father really wanted to have kids and played this when I was just born. One year after that he drowned.

Pure genius !!!
No edge. No arrogance. Just pure talent and an engaging performer. Wonderful.
Brilliant what more can you say?

Mr. Bojangles Songtext Übersetzung
Ich hab mal einen gekannt - Bojangles, ja, so hat er geheißen - der tanzte.
Tanzte mit seinen ausgelatschten Schuhen,
seinem ausgefransten Hemd,
den ausgebeulten Hosen.
Graues, fast silbernes Haar.
Ganz weich hat der getanzt.
Springen konnte er wie kein anderer, hoch,
und aufgekommen wie ’ne Feder so leicht.
Getroffen hab’ ich ihn in einer Gefängniszelle in New Orleans.
Ich war ziemlich fertig damals.
Kaputt.
Unten.
Bitte !
Einmal noch.
Los.

Total class that will never be matched again in any lifetime on this planet,
R.I.P.sammy you are a legend forever.
This version is the best , no disrespect to the Nitty Gritty Dirt band that done the original .
Yet this song has nothing to do uith Bill Bojangles robinson .
you are totally right!
I agree with you,
this version y really the best!
+conor thomas The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band didn't write this song. Jerry Jeff Walker did and the Mr. Bojangles he wrote the song about was White.
DOH Homer .
Ive posted many posted this song was written about a white man .
What an absolute privilege and a joy to hear and watch this great man singing one of the greatest songs to grace our ears.
That awful Bruce Forsyth thinks he can sing as good as Sammy. What an embarrassing plonker he is. Sammy can never be upstaged. RIP
Sammy is Bruce Forsyth's greatest inspiration and he loves him so much...
