    MR. BOJANGLES
    (Jerry Jeff Walker)
I knew a man Bojangles and he'd danced for you
    In worn out shoes
Silver hair, a ragged shirt and baggy pants
He did the old soft shoe
    He jumped so high
    Jumped so high
    Then he'd lightly touched down
I met him in a cell in New Orleans I was
    Down and out
He looked to me to be the eyes of age
    As his spoke right out
    We talked of life
    Talked of life
He laughed and slapped his leg instead
He said his name Bojangles and he danced a lick
    Across the cell
He grabbed his pants for a better stance
    Then he jumped so high
    And he clicked his heels
    He let go a laugh
    Let go a laugh
Shook back his clothes all around
    Mr. Bojangles
    Mr. Bojangles
    Mr. Bojangles
    Dance
He danced for those in minstrel shows and county fairs
    Throughout the south
He spoke in tears of fifteen years
Of how his dog and him
    Had travelled about
But his dog up and died
    Up and died
After twenty years he still grieves
He said I dance now at every chance in honkytonks
    For drinks and tips
But most the time I spend behind these county bars
    Cause I drinks a bit
He shook his head and as he shook his head
I just had to ask him please - please
    Mr. Bojangles
    Mr. Bojangles
    Mr. Bojangles
    Dance
    Dance
    Please Dance

I fell in love with this song the very first time I heard it which was many years ago. Red Skelton did a skit on his show where he was dressed up in clown make up 🤡 and danced to this song. I have heard it many many times since then. One of my favorite versions of this song is played by David Bromberg. I totally relate to the line "his dog up & died, and after 20 years he still grieves". I lost my dear sweet Jenny back in March 2011, over 13 years ago & I still grieve for her everyday. 🐶💔😥🐾🙏🏻🌈

@@theonlyOldBlue growing up in the Midwest, one wouldn't think of a similar character to Bojangles. But I can say as a witness to the fact, I met what I always will believe to be Mr. Bojangles.
He was a curly headed African-American man that came into a small bar / tavern near the Livestock complex in Sioux City, IA . His clothes were as clean as he could've gotten them yet tattered and torn from the life he lived as a homeless man. He wore a bass drum on his back, cymbals between his knees, a wash board off of his right hip, a harmonica with the headgear , and played a Dobro steel bodied guitar that sounded amazing even when it was out of tune. He'd toss his hat on the floor and go into a dancing singing and playing like you wouldn't believe. I'm rambling but anyways , thank you for taking me back to a time when race was evident but not a problem, when men were still men , and women were the finest, and there wasn't alot of hatred amongst people.

Great version and I know this is irrelevant but mr bojangles was a white man who had 1 leg shorter than the other that as a child looked like he was dancing when he walked. After years of alcohol abuse he became a street performer and I met him in jail ...as told by Jerry Jeff Walker (writer of the song) also told during David Brombergs live version on YT
