    Nice video, again. The airbag issue is a pain. We had the same problem earlier in the year. I knew of the refurb route, but went to our dealer (whom we bought our Swift Escape off new, 5 years ago), who stated he would get a price, for a new unit, then provide us with a supplied & fitted cost. When he contacted us, he stated the new ECU was discounted for some reason, happy days - so we booked the van in. All was done nice & quickly, at a very reasonable cost. When we picked the van up, the service manager said they'd had a few of these fail in recent times. The common denominator appeared to be that most of the vans in question with this failure, had either been in storage, or not used in a while & not on charge regularly. In our case, when I thought about it, there was an occasion when the Swift Command system warned me the batteries were low - I thought I had plugged in the charger system a few days before, but I had not ! Maybe the cause ?

    • @BobEarnshawMoHo
      @BobEarnshawMoHo  Год назад

      Yes there is some problem caused by the voltage levels, either too low or high.

    Sorry about the trouble with airbag/lights on dashboard. I had something a bit similar on a Peugeot Boxer 2014, a few years ago. A light came on for a supposed handbrake fault and it was traced to a faulty engine management chip. When replacing and then reprogramming the item, they found that it was a Fiat management chip. I know that they are made in the same factory but even the technicians were very surprised. Your video stirs up my memories of Orkney, even more so since my lad works on Scottish Ferries now. Thank you, lovely stuff.

    Hi Bob
    This might fix your airbag warning.
    With the engine off, place your right foot on throttle and press all the way to the floor, then place your left foot on the brake pedal and press firmly as far as it will go. Now turn ignition on so the lights on the dash come on. DONT START THE ENGINE wait 15 seconds whilst both feet are pressed. Turn ignition off and lift both feet completely away from the pedals. Now you can start the engine normally.

    Hello Bob and Jenny many thanks for sharing and I hope you enjoy your time in Orkney. We travelled up there in June and luckily had absolutely brilliant weather, sunburnt in Orkney now that is a first for me 😂. The Scrabster ferry is by far the better route when travelling in your motorhome reversing on is not the best. I agree with an earlier comment that this air bag fault is very well known and Fiat should do a recall on this matter as it is a real safety concern. I guess the meanng of FIAT, "Fix It Again Tony" is correct, but alas again and again. Complain to Trading Standards that this part is not of merchantisable quality. Enjoy your travels and stay safe. ❤👍

I more think there is a problem with the Fiat electric system, dropping volts when you turn the key to start etc. shame we don’t know a Fiat tech that would spill the beans on what is wrong with them. Ps. One of the times my unit went I was happy driving along so definitely not low battery or high.

    Him Guy’s had exactly same problem, when in Denmark, 2 years ago, as with your’s both airbag and seat belt warning light came on. After spending nearly £900.00. Thought problem solved. Then came back on about week later. Brought new airbag part that fits near engine battery, seems common problem with Fiat’s since fitted new one, no problem.😊😊

  • @daveegg2467
    @daveegg2467 Год назад

    Hi Bob, Jenny. Another great vid as always. The airbag light again though😢.. We are on our second ecu in 5 months, 1st one sent away and repaired, second one was a new one. This is far too common. Fiat should be more involved and replace foc with an upgraded version. They are clearly too sensitive in some way. I was also told low battery voltage caused the issue, but the 2 onboard battery systems suggested 12. 5v? Fitted a new battery anyhow, but not convinced it needed one.

  • @drivingthefrontier

    Great video. Did you not know it wasn't a RORO before you booked? Scrabster is the alternative. Do you not travel with gas turned on? Can you not turn off the alert sounds, there is usually a volume setting in the menu. Is it the passenger airbag or the drivers? The Pentland can be tricky if the ramp is steep due to the tide, you were lucky you did not ground out the Thule. Happy travels

    • @BobEarnshawMoHo
      @BobEarnshawMoHo  Год назад +2

      I did manage to turn the beeping off with the mode button eventually. It doesn't say which air bag is faulty, just air bag fault. I took the bike rack off, thought I said that. I did know it was a RORO ferry, I thought it was a case of doing a U turn, that's why i was surprised. Yes I turned the gas off. We went via Scrabster last time, but we wanted the shorter crossing.

      Assuming you have a Fiat, Multiecuscan (Mes) will allow you to read the airbag fault code. It won't allow you to repair the airbag module but if you buy a new module from Fiat (the only safe option) MES will do the proxy alignment. This is what I did. Less the £300 for airbag module, MES is £50 (you need a Windoze PC). MES is useful, there is a free demo version. I've also used it to change my tank from 60 to 90 litres. P.S. MES will probably work on Pugs and Citroens.
