that's very inspiring, any time you can find the strength to push through adversity like you did. I've done 7 marathons, and only 2 or 3 of them have gone really well. Congrats!
Congrats, Harrison! Road marathons are tough. They get easier, but yeah, as you alluded to, they require a bit different training to feel like you are nailing it. The cool thing is that road specific training still helps quite a bit with trail. They can complement each other (I got much faster in my road marathons once I started running trails, interestingly - so it goes both ways). Anyway, I'll be in Houston in 2.5 weeks for Rocky Raccoon 100 - wondering if I'll get that Texas freeze going on or something else. TBH I'll take anything except torrential rain (because running 100 miles in mud sounds awful).
Thank you! I hadn’t thought of it that way but I guess the different terrains do benefit each other. I don’t think I’ll be a road runner on a regular basis but I’m happy I’ve expanded my horizons a bit. I hope your race goes well! I would want a ton of rain either hahaha
Good on ya. 4:00 is definitely doable. On my first, I had bad stomach problems (vomiting) and was very undertrained. I ran it in 4:50 or so. 6 , I've run 3:30 on a downhill and 3:40 on a lumpy course. 3rd one I got 3:58 I think. Great job and thanks for the report.
Thanks for the encouragement! Yea wow you cut a lot of time off. I think I can for sure do that. I've done sub 2 hour halfs..not the same but I believe I can reach the sub 4 marathon with training
@@harrisonalways Totally agreed. I bet with some marathon specific tempo runs and then a few long runs with progression or some marathon pace segments, you could get it there. Plus, you can always find a speedy downhill course and get some extra light super shoes for an extra lift. I've never done the super shoes, but my PR is on St. George (2600 feet of descent).
Congrats on your time! It was my first Marathon as well! It took me 5:21 hours lmao and I have been training rose running during the last sixt months. I basically cramped during the whole second half but manage to finish. You should be proud of your time you are only going to get better!
Thank you! Congrats to you! You should be proud as well. You got through it! I definitely plan on trying for a sub 4 hour in the future..I’ll have to obviously train a lot
Congrats on your your first road marathon!! They are a grind and every finish is one to be celebrated. Way to push through your stomach issues and make the most of it. I did Houston last year and loved it - they put on a great race!!
Well done you did really well out there. My old running bud Kenny Stewart won this one in 1989 in 2 hours 11 minutes 30 seconds I'm sure he was first British person to win it. I've just subscribed to your channel really impressed with you once again well done
@@harrisonalways your welcome. It's crazy when Kenny wanted a slow run he ran with me at my fastest 😂😂 I could never get under 3 hours managed to get 3 hour 2 minutes 😂😂 . Thanks for your reply much appreciated 👍👍
Congratulations. I was in Coral C like you were. It was freaking cold and I did not wear enough, sleeveless shirt and shorts. I had gloves but it did not help. My body never warm up throughout the marathon. I felt like I was running in a refrigerator the whole time. Had I dressed properly, I felt my finish time would be better. My running clothes were dry when I finished the run, no sweat at all due to the coldness, Brrr.... IMHO, the HEB free breakfast was not worth your time eating it. Just enjoy the free bananas, chocolate milk, and water.
Congrats on your Marathon! but as someone who has ran the myrtle beach marathon alot......i would prefer colder weather over what weather has seemed to be here everytime ive raced myrtle beach, 70 degrees 2019 90 percent humidity, 2022 60 degrees 90 percent humidity, and this past year 2023 70 degrees 90 percent humidity........lol im praying for colder weather at myrtle beach marathon this march, I dont run in heat good at all long distance.
Yup! im able keep my heart rate lower and pace faster longer cooler weather, but i need work on my aerobic zone 2 and zone 3 strength more for marathon and get faster in those zones to combat the weather elements race day
Marathons are so tough. I have done Marathons that were tougher than 100Ks on me mentally and physically. I think part of it is running on pavement. Great job by the way!
Yes!! I agree! I’ve done longer trail races that were easier mentally. I think it was the repetitive nature of it and road seems harder on the body. Thank you!
Thanks! Yeaaaaa it was a tough time for a minute there haha I think it was that I didn’t have access to my normal electrolytes but I didn’t think the alternative would be an issue..
Houston is like a box of chocolates…😂 come run it again, weather will be….different, I promise. There is something very special about the Houston Marathon and the crowds.

I call miles 14-19 (actually 13-20) the “grind” and that’s where I get all David Goggins on myself. Congrats on your first road marathon.
LOL I was actually listening to “grindin” by NF on repeat during that time period
Thanks!
Wind was out of the northwest during this marathon. Miles 13-18 were straight into the wind. This stretch was bad for everyone.

Have you tried other gels besides Gu? They always mess my stomach up. Neversecond and Torq work best for me, but I know everyone’s gut is different.
It was the electrolytes I used..I didn’t have my normal ones. I’ve used the same liquid Gu for almost all of my ultras and never had an issue 🫠
