Old car barely any features so I had to add reverse parking sensors, cruise control, and a new stereo system (speakers too).

Yes, it's a car, not a mobile phone...where are people getting so much disposable money from. Lot of people "upgrading" just coz their neighbour got a new one. The best way to be green is to use your "things" ( cars, bikes, electronics) to max possible extent. Decrease the demand, reduce consumption , see the prices go down, see the change in attitude of car dealers when demand goes down, and see how much you can save, by not upgrading every now and then, use that to explore yourself, your surroundings, donate a little.

Just before the pandemic, I had bought a spanking new Skoda Octavia L&K and post pandemic,i bought a new Ignis as a second car for running errands which i couldn’t use skoda for peacefully. After buying ignis, my mind started playing games wrt finances and i felt the urge to sell off the Octavia as I wasn’t using it much and the car was undergoing a lot of depreciation. So ultimately I landed up with only the Ignis in my garage which i would have never bought as a primary car. Im still using the ignis daily and m enjoying it a lot. I dont have to worry about parking it anywhere, about door dings, about insurance premium costs and other things things that we associate with expensive luxury cars. Still, I sometimes feel that I need a car equivalent to the Octavia or above it to satisfy my ego, however, the Ignis does all the tasks that an Octavia would, definitely except having those extra features obviously, but which would be hardly ever used. I realised that the cars we purchase today are usually more for status than for actual requirement.

I live in Dubai and have a small collection of cars at my disposal, mostly V6 and V8s ranging in age from 9-24 years old. My absolute favorite daily driver is a 2008 Lexus LS460, which I bought new in 2008 and is in excellent condition. It’s hard to give up on this car because it’s still a NA V8, super comfortable, and I have upgraded the stereo-phone integration with under $100 of Bluetooth adapters etc. I find a lot of new cars in terms of motorization, smoothness, longevity and user interface to be a step backwards from recent vehicles and modern classics. Even some of the newer designs are hideous (looking at you, BMW 7 Series). Very few brand new cars truly excite me. There is something satisfying about maintaining slightly older cars in top form and enhancing them slightly for tech and features.

Food for thought. Buy a small car for occasional city use and one off highway journeys. Use public transport otherwise. Saves a lot of hassle of not worrying about parking spots, scratches, chalaans, and the sheer tiredness. Buy a scooter instead and zip through if you're young. Learn from the Europeans. Push the government for better sustainable transportation infra

You haven't talked about peer pressure in the family. Just because everyone else is changing their cars , which is stupid thing to do in the 1st place, doesn't mean you should too. Buying a car is not an economically sensible thing to do. You pay 40-45% of the value of the car, in taxes to the Govt. To run the car, you pay another 60% tax on fuel. Add to that maintenance, insurance renewal and the fact that the value of the car goes to zero is an economical disaster.

Brother. With the Lords in power in GOI adding more and more ethanol into our petrol and still not reducing prices, we all know that ethanol burns all the rubber and plastic parts and tubes and hoses and to top it off, absorbs water too. And if you have a car that's ten years old or more, it makes sense to keep it and keep it maintained for the reliability. New cars are getting ever more fragile, never forget that. Not only do they have more technical issues but they are much more difficult and expensive to repair. An older car with more simple technology can last you a very long time if properly taken care of.
