  • Does ADAS really work? Today? Do sunroofs really make your car more premium? Some of the no longer optional features we get in our cars today, argues Kartikeya Singhee, work rather well in places where the weather, traffic and environment is not like it is here in India. Should you not have a choice to choose smarter options for ourselves then?

While my friend was buying a new SUV, I suggested him harrier, and another friend suggested creta. But he went with bolero neo. His point was, that car has ac, car is built to last, can go many places, fancy SUVs cannot. Moreover, he drives majorly in rural areas, broken roads. He may be driving on Yamuna expressway once or twice in a year, majority travel is in villages. The day I rode with him, I understood, how much of a clear idea he had on his requirements. That car went through every muddy, dusty, broken road like a charm, ac was cool, car was sounding like mini truck, but on such roads, it felt home. He asked me, where will the ADAS work on such roads, why would you take a dust bath by getting out of the sunroof, when you have the privilege to stay clean inside the cool car.

From participating in the solar decathlon in college, I've found that they're straight up detrimental for India and huge money and power has to go into air conditioning these buildings. Sunroofs are exactly the same. If I could opt out of them I would.

Very well said sir! Truly captivating stuff, you had all of my attention for the entirety of the video. One more thing i'd like to add is HID/LED white lights, most streets in most "other" worlds have streetlights, even massive 20 lane highways are lit up adequately and so using white lights on low beams do not hinder visibility, however using white lights on Indian roads is a sure ingredient for tragedy. White light doesn't cut through fog, rain or even other lights very well. Example: a shop just around a corner with white lights could easily hide an oncoming car's white lights with its own lights. Orange/yellow lights on the other hand will definately cut through the white lights from the building and thus letting everyone know that there is a vehicle on the other side of the corner. Another one is the horrible high powerd glare that blinds everyone at night. Lets face it, most Indians on roads have zero civic sense or consideration towards any one/anything, using low beams is like commiting sacrilege to them.

I would like to see high-beam-assist as a standard or maybe even a mandatory feature. The amount of times I get blinded by on coming cars with high beam is insane. Even after signalling the on coming car with my highbeam some won’t budge and force me to slow down or even stop when I can’t see anything but the light. A major safety concern. Brands and regulators should do something about this..

    1. You have to name it Bullseye.
    2. This video is the culmination what I expected when MotorInc started and you've bettered it by wrapping it in 7:27, Kudos.
    3. I have wondered and first hand experienced the issues with glass buildings. For anyone interested the glass buildings take in fresh air only once in X days(typically 7) and recirculate it over the entire week since it takes energy to cool the hot air around. Just stand within 2-3 feet of a glass panel on a sunny day to experience. Sunroof are the same.
I put the glass buildings, sunroofs specifically in the "aping the west" category. ADAS falls loosely in it though.

Some safety features are great but some equipment like leather heated seats, heated steering wheels, giant glass roofs, gimmicky ambient interior lighting and a bazillion driving modes are just a few of the features really not needed here. Oh and yes the screens are getting bigger and bigger. Having owned a couple of top spec cars I really have to remind myself to use of these features with no real reason. I force myself to drive on a cold night to use the heated seats for example...lol. Bottom line, if I simply want 5 relevant features I end up having to pay for 10 more irrelevant ones and not to forgot the higher cost of maintenance thereafter.

First of all, thank you for the great content!
To be very honest, only we are to be blamed for the way the market is today. Most of us value bling over function and safety. We have started treating our cars as gadgets, rather than machines which would transport us from one place to another safely, comfortably, and reliably (driving fun is subjective though). We believe in the spec sheet more than the actual feel of the car on the road. We show off our brochure!
We did not buy enough Fords, Fiats to keep them in the country. Cars which were fundamentally brilliant, safe, dynamically capable, but lacked the "fancy" features: fairy lights inside out (now some offer tubelights too), touch sensitive buttons, a hole in the roof. Yes, they had their flaws in terms of aftersales, but we did not give them a chance even when they tried hard to rectify themselves. That is why, in India, good cars do not sell.
Manufacturers take this opportunity to reserve basic features like a rear wash and wipe, auto dimming IRVM, only for the top trim. I remember a certain vehicle which offered a sunroof, but did not have a rear wash and wipe! I do not blame the manufacturer. They are here to do business, and they know which configuration would sell.

It is high time that car buyers get the option to customise their vehicles even before they get built on an assembly line. It would give the customers the flexibility to choose what they don't want in their cars, e.g sunroofs. On the flip side, it will also allow the customers to opt in for some good features which are only available in local car markets. Some good examples are factory fitted seat covers and noise insulation on doors.

Appreciate with the thought about practicality and showoff. Especially when you spoke about the sunroof and why exactly it was made. It would be really helpful if you could make a video or shorts on the actual reasons of few things which were implemented into the car as necessary rather than gimmick and contemporary design like manual key hole if in case the key battery drains out, rear defogger with wipers to heat up at cold weather, fog lights for actual illumination in foggy/cloudy weather below the bumper compared to now which is in headlight level and are LED not halogen or projector, magazine holders etc, just to name a few. As a car enthusiast and owner there are so many things which were implemented in the car in terms of necessary, technically, practically and precautions which has now turned into features, trims etc and few which have disappeared which sometimes feel a negative impact onto the customers by brands. How they handle curvy roads, sudden crossing of animals, changing the lanes, potholes while driving at 100 kmph matters most. Not the drag races on empty straight roads.

I see a lot of them wanting alot of features in their cars which they don't even use after a few months of getting the car.

Only one way around this is if the manufacturers offer a base variant and then give us options in the form of some default OR custom packages to personalize a car. Today, I do admit that even though a top end variant has all the bells and whistles, it does come with many extras which if excluded can make it better value. I still don't understand ADAS autonomous features OR sunroof OR panoramic sunroof for that matter when clearly majority of us don't know it's correct use. I'm sort of the person who wants certain features to ASSIST me in driving while keeping me safe and entertained in comfort with the car under my control. So, a manual gearbox, ventilated seats, blind spot monitoring, airbags, ABS, hill start assist, ESC, alloy wheels, cruise control, auto dimming IRVM, auto headlamps, rain sensing wipers, wired connectivity to the car's infotainment system, appropriate and a reliable engine (not the most powerful nor the most fuel efficient) plus adequate space for family and luggage. I'm all set BUT all I see today is forceful addition of a sunroof, connected and remote car features, excessive use of Chrome, wireless car connectivity, unreliable automatic, excessive power OR fuel efficiency, etc.

So true my friend. On similar lines, I had been wondering about touch screens on dash boards too. Some even go all the way in and offer all the buttons as touch instead of essential ones in analog.
I mean c’mon, just for turning on the AC I don’t want to take my eye off, focus on the screen area I need to click, move my finger towards and there I have the AC turned on .. quite possibly, in Heaven!
Car makers include features based on market demand, what people think they expect. And these people expectations stem from various sources without considering the local practicality. So they change has to be driven from both ways with the majority driven from the car makers.

Great content guys. You spoke about features which are rich in fancy but very less practical in usage. This can extend to the power of the vehicle that you choose as well. If some one goes for a higher powered vehicle (motor bike or car) and then uses it to the limit, then it makes sense. But majority of the purchases, specifically the younger generation just go for it to flaunt it. They hardly are able to enjoy the power under hood as they may be mostly driving it in clogged and congested urban set up. Do we really need so much power which will result in very high fuel consumption, when you actually dont need it? Are you helping the environment with that higher carbon foot print? Kudos to the team in bringing up more rational questions.

I get where you coming from and mostly agree on everything you said. I use mg astor with ADAS. apart from the best feature dynamic cruise control which is not usefully in city. I have been saved twice by emergency braking . would highlight two incident, on a highway when on a not so fully constructed express way a s presso suddenly moves into my lane and brakes because a bus entered onto the highway from a service lane at high speed. I reacted immediately but the applied the breaks 1 second sooner . which made a difference of life and death. my car stopped literally just infront of the s presso with a gap of less the half an inch. the other incident was in the city when a bike entered into the main road from one of the lanes and because of teh building and tree i had no chance to see it. again car braked and released the break as if it new just that much was enough otherwise the vehicle at the back would have crashed into us. just highlighting the two cuz , that made realize I will always buy a vehicle with ADAS and both front and back disc breaks .

The irony is that this way of putting fancy stuff in a car by brands will continue further by miles. And what surprises me as a consumer is that people consider them very seriously rather than asking whether the basics of a car are right i.e, drive feel, drive quality, cabin space, reliability, etc. For me all these ADAS, sun roof, etc looks so wierd in a country like India where things are not organised well. I feel personally brands should focus on features which increases the practicality rather than making gimmics and mass marketing.

Today Kartikeya woke up and chose violence! Talk about stirring the hornets nest and boy do these two do not fail to deliver. Everyone says ADAS and sunroofs is what will make your purchase better and Kartikeya is like,"no friggin' way!". I wholeheartedly agree with the sunroofs. So much so that I now share a pet-peeve of children sticking out of sunroofs with Shumi and shake my head every time I see one. And the ADAS being default on certain vehicles. It should be on offer as an add-on because that is how a lot of these technologies evolve and get refined. ABS is an example of that. It was rudimentary when first launched and is seamless now even on many small motorcycles.
Cheers to you for this video today. Would love to see more of these "calling out the nonsense" videos and I have genuinely never been as excited for an upcoming RUclips video as your impending aeroplane one. I swear kiger makes sense to me as it doesn't have a sunroof but has 4 star rating of safety, Big boot space with trunk organizer to keep it neat and clean while keeping your boot of car clean whilst keeping necessary objects like a vacuum cleaner for car, tire blower and a lot!! It has a lot of storage spaces to keep stuff and still then sit comfortably sit on the car that a hyundai can't provide not even creta for instance. Plus the running costs are like Rs 6-7 in city. I drive only in weekends and only then the steering controls are a breeze to use to control the infotainment system of the cars. I put boot lights as a part of accessory but it's fine. I mean for city purposes kiger suits me the best without a compromise in safety. I really don't need that performance as I stay in city for 99% of the time. Buy anything even mobile phones, cars, bullets as per your requirement and stay satisfied. Hyundai and Kia sucks to the core. By offering such obsolete features at a high price. Just can't wait to see bharat NCAP be a reality that should say that a car can be an Indian/Bharat Car only and only if they get the min of 4 star ratings and a proper engine refinement. That's even when the maruti suzuki cars will also be better for the population. Else jo dikthe hai woh bikthe hai!

I am in my early 40s and have spent all of my teenage years and almost all of my adulthood following up the auto market because it fascinates me. A car or a bike brings out the child in me, makes me feel young and enthusiastic. I have seen how the automobiles have evolved through the years and how it has changed the perception of an average buyer. From asking the basic questions about fuel economy to prioritizing safety, we have come a long way.
I totally agre with what Kartikeya is saying and strongly believe that as a buyer, we should have a say while spending our hard earnd money on what we need insted of what a manufacturer is asking for as a package.
As a buyer, we should be given some sort of customization by car manufacturers.

Here is my opposite opinion! Please remember that I have never used or driven the ADAS feature. But based on people's feedback, I'm so happy to have that feature on highways. In fact, to make it mandatory by govt.
    Here is my story...
My dad drove back in 2004 in a Maruti 800, and a speedy truck (uncontrolled by break) hit us from the back. Mother was sitting in the back, and we had to lose her after she had been suffering for 9 months. I feel all those suffering and losses are for nothing... if this ADAS is there in every vehicle 'on Highway'.
Another way to think is to welcome all safety features and put them under scrutiny, rather than just rejecting those, and anyone's suffering or losses are unnecessary.

      @motorinc  9 месяцев назад

Spot on. Have been telling my friends to stay away from sunroof for years. Its a totally unusable piece of junk.
One major point people miss out is that on bad roads, even minor potholed roads always close your windows and sunroof, the vibrations loosen and damage the fittings.
    1) they heat the car.
    2) a/c takes a toll.
    3) additional mechanism reduces headroom.
    4) aesthetically a feeling of too much of load over your head.
    5) more prone to damage and once damaged cost plus headache is huge.

When I was going for the Dominar 400, I was being sold the “touring version” equipped with what Bajaj calls “panniers” and knuckle guards and stuff. When I asked them to just give me the bike as a stock piece so I could add aftermarket panniers and knuckle guards, I was told that it wasn’t an option. Weird how illogical a brand’s sales channels can be, really.

Thanks a lot for telling the truth . I faced similar issue recently when I was buying a car for my father. He is a new driver and it was very difficult for me to convince him to go to automatic variant. Same thing happened while choosing variants. Now everyone wants features that are little to no use and cars are moving away from driver centric to being entertainment centric. The biggest Irony is White fog lamps. Most of the cars don't have the required safety features like BSM, lane assist, Automatic IRVM, camera, TPMS, seat height adjustment, Tilt and telescopic adjustment on steering, Automatic highbeam, etc. If they have, you have to go the most expensive variant. But stupidity like non usable roof rails, sunroofs, big screens, alexa integration, etc are available as addons from early variants. I bought a car in US, and they offer security features right from base variant or as an addon on any variant. Indian consumers need to change their mindset first and car manufacturers will respond accordingly.

This is a much-needed conversation to have in today's time as having more features in one's car has become the latest fad and people keep on complaining about how the electricals of their newly bought cars are misbehaving, I mean, what else do you expect, you are getting features available in luxury cars at a fraction of the price, Quality won't be as good as those present in luxury cars because of the use of inexpensive parts, I understand these are feel-good features but, at the same time, basic features like day-night orvm, fog lamps, rear window defogger are not offered as standard.
In the end, I would like to add that we as consumers should educate ourselves more on this front and demand the necessary features as standard as the manufacturers are simply meeting the demand of the customers, the more educated a customer is, the better his judgement will be and hence our manufacturers will churn out inexpensive sensible products with more focus on the necessary features rather than on the luxury features.

Pinpointed and value added thought. I worked on project where office building is of glass. After monsoon rooms required AC at 18 along with table fans. Useless concept for our country where temp is around 40. We are increasing pollution with such ideas. You correctly mentioned all the points. Thanks for bringing such value added points.
