    "Most fighters don't survive attacking the Primus." Babylon 5's starfuries not only survived,but destroyed a primus.

    • @digitalis2977
      @digitalis2977 2 года назад +25

      That's because the Starfury outclassed every other Younger Race fighter except the Nial (and even then, the edge of the Nial was due more to Minbari Physiology than true fighter supremacy, as they could pull higher Gs than any other Younger Race without risk of blackout or injury.)

    • @watcherzero5256
      @watcherzero5256 2 года назад +4

      @@digitalis2977 It wasnt that they could pull higher G's, it was that they were willing to pull them and pass out and let their autopilot complete the kill. Though it seems their real advantage was their fighters were just as hard to lock on to with sensors as their capital ships.

      @digitalis2977 2 года назад +11

      @@watcherzero5256 Actually, I believe you're confusing the Minbari with the Centauri, as a common Centauri tactic was just what you described. The Minbari, on the other hand, could pull roughly 3x higher G-Forces than a Human without blacking out.

    • @digitalis2977
      @digitalis2977 2 года назад +6

      @@ParagonRex Not sure what episode you watched.
      The Starfuries ravaged that Primus, and the only Fury it managed to hit was in the opening salvo when it was still flying in escort formation with the Narn Cruiser.
      Perhaps the Centauri Interceptors were solely devoted to incoming fire from the station, but even AFTER the upgrades Babylon 5 was no warship, and it could only hope to take one WITH its fighter compliment.
      Either way, I'd say the Starfuries were more than successful against the Primus.

    Main issue with the Centauri fleet (until the Centauri Wars of Aggression) was massive underinvestment, it was the second most powerful fleet in the galaxy once however most of their ships were a century or more old and outdated allowing the Narn to win their war of independence. The Primus while large was a lot weaker armed than the other major races primary battleships and slow and un-maneuverable.

    The Centarui are a classic example of the axiom ‘Pride goeth before a fall’. The Republic was once known as the ‘Lion of the Galaxy’ (which is odd since Lions are from Earth, and we didn’t encounter the Centauri until well after their fall from grace) and they were so powerful that even the Minbari chose not to directly challenge them, but as with all Empires, it grew too large and unwieldy and those in power grew increasingly more corrupt. In their arrogance they stopped pushing for technological advancement and allowed themselves to stagnate.
    The Primus is an excellent example of this. When new, it was a formidable warship with few rivals, but most of those still in service are centuries old, and despite having been continuously upgraded over the years, they are no longer a match for newer designs fielded by other races and have something of a reputation for having a ‘glass jaw’. This is evidenced by the fact that the Babylon 5 station, which despite its weapons refit is still far from being a warship, was able to destroy a Primus without too much effort. We also see a Narn G’Quan class Heavy Cruiser destroy a Primus in a 1 on 1 fight, and we know that the Narn are not as advanced as the Centauri.
    The Primus is essentially a ‘show the flag’ type vessel by the time of the show, used to project a sense of power and intimidate younger races, whilst most of the actual fighting is done by the Vorchan. I suspect that an Omega Class Destroyer would be able to go toe to toe with one and win, and the Warlock class Destroyer, with its twin Aegis class particle beams would likely make mincemeat of the Primus.

    • @podemosurss8316
      @podemosurss8316 2 года назад +2

      Probably the sentence "Lion of the Galaxy" is the translation onto English of the sentence, with the original sentence refering to an apex predator within Centaury Prime. Also, after the 2x10 retrofit B5 is said to be able to engage with a well-armew warship, and the Narn are using reverse-engineered Centauri tech, and they probably know the specs of the Primus well. I agree on the Vorchan doing most of the fighting.

    • @tkmaxximum9594
      @tkmaxximum9594 2 года назад +1

      @@podemosurss8316 B5 is my favourite sci-fi show, and it was very well written, but like most sci-fi it was never very consistent with what various ships and weapons were capable of, with this largely being dictated by the script. Some good examples of this are Earthforce Thundetbolts engaging and destroying Vorlon and Shadow fighters, which shouldn’t be possible, G’Quans going toe to toe with Primus class ships in one episode, stopping a Shadow Battlecrab dead with its particle lasers in another, but being dispatched in a few shots in almost every other episode, and my personal favourite, the Warlock class destroyer being suggested to be a true rival for the Sharlin Warcruiser, but then shown being destroyed by a single volley from a Vorchan in ‘The Lost Tails’
      Despite all the above, pretty much every appearance of the Primus Class Battlecruiser ended with it being destroyed fairly easily. We saw that Vorchans handled almost all the ship to ship combat during the Narn war, and that the Primus rolled in at the end to glass the Narn homeworld, so I think the ‘Glass Jaw’ label is fair.

      The Vorchan is around 2.5 times shorter, it seems, so from around 286 to 608 meters long. Depends on scale to Nial fighter too, when docked with one, in season 5.

    Most races build ships to match the Primus, heck it pretty much set the benchmark of capital ship design. They also try to match the Centauri fighters, but nobody in the league can match the Vorchan.
    In midweight ships the Centauri are kings. This allows them to range deep into enemy’s territory raiding and destroying at Will. Against bigger threats they can pick and choose their battles, picking off lone Capital ships or retreating if outmatched.

The RPG Babylon Project had a space combat system, based on Ground Zero Games: Full Thrust system, in its first, and only, supplement. It only a a few ships for the major races, and ironically the Centari were only armed with Pulse weapons, and in Babylon 5 War the Centari are one of the few races not to use Pulse Weapons.

    I was going to switch this video off when you started using the term "in the universe"!!! This shows a complete lack of understanding of space!!! Babylon 5 is set within the Milky Way galaxy. The scale of Centauri Imperial expansion occurred within our galaxy. To apply this to an entire universe is non sensical and shows utter ignorance!!!

    • @CountScarlioni
      @CountScarlioni 2 года назад

      Not even the Milky Way really. The whole scope of B5 takes place in a fairly small pizza slice of the Galaxy. What lies in the Milky Way beyond the jump gate network is basically unknown.

    • @brndnwilks
      @brndnwilks 2 года назад

      I try to give him the benefit of the doubt. Older sci-fi movies and shows tended to use Galaxy and Universe interchangeably, with the scales between the two not being all the common knowledge or because it sounded cool. That has filtered down to modern times, though becoming less and less common.

    Are you sure about the reliability of your sources?
    The White Star was 475.6 meter in length and the smallest known ship that could form it's own Jump Point. That length matches on screen appearances.
    Other data also does not seem to match in comparison to other ships and used technology.
    If your data is based on RPG's it might be a good idea to mention this in the title.

    • @dianavespid937
      @dianavespid937 2 года назад

      The thing is, the Liandra was made in the Human Minbari War and it was jump capable. I think JMS talks about this saying that Sheridan wasn’t aware of all the jump capable ships in the galaxy.

    • @grayscribe1342
      @grayscribe1342 2 года назад

      @@dianavespid937 True, but ships that are around as long as the Centauri Fleet? The Narn would have made sure to know the capabilities of every ship type. Just as anyone within reach of the Centauri would have. There would have been enough information to gather to figure that out.

    • @dianavespid937
      @dianavespid937 2 года назад

      Gray Scribe For the RPG lenghts I usually scale them up. Look at the G’Quan and the Primus, they are around 1/2.5 of their canon length. If you upsize Heavy Combat Vessels and Capital Ships, all of the jump capable ships are larger than the White Star. Kind of a convoluted retcon but it patches up that problem....until we encounter the Jumphawk Command Cruiser, of course. (Drazi have been in space for several hundred years, confirmed in the Hyach episode, so it isn’t THAT insane)

    • @dianavespid937
      @dianavespid937 2 года назад

      Also just a reminder, Babylon 5 Wars was old enough to be made before the scenes where the White Star got upsized to 475.6 meters and old enough to use the “200 meters Sharlin” screen of the first season.

    • @ParagonRex
      @ParagonRex 2 года назад +3

      Then you don't remember correctly....The Centauri at the time of B5 were ruled by a pacifist Emperor, but prior to that they stomped and ruled over a very large swath of the Galaxy. Even during B5, they were so respected and feared that Sheridan himself said that Earth would be no match for the Centauri in a war. It was why Earth was desperate for the Centauri to intercede in the Earth/Minbari war. Earth knew that only the Centauri had the power to turn the tide, but when the Centauri said no, Earth begged for Centauri weapons instead.

    • @CountScarlioni
      @CountScarlioni 2 года назад +1

      In the lore it notes that younger races were known to underestimate the Centauri due to the age of their ships and the over-engineered ornateness of the fleet. It could be a very grave mistake. We see in the show that even White Stars can get absolutely chewed up and spat out by a wolfpack of Vorchans.
      When we meet the Centauri before the Narn-Centauri war, they're undergoing a political reform, aimed at rehabilitating them as interstellar partners to the other races rather than feared conquerors. Their ships have lost none of their bite, but the navy has become risk averse and unwilling to take casualties (probably due to a lack of grit from their hereditary peer commanders). Over time the Centauri had become reluctant, even fearful to use their power.
      Of course, then comes the death of reformist Emperor Turhan, Londo's deal with the Shadows and the war with Narn which scuppers the Centauri path towards the light. That's when their ugly, warlike side returns.

    5:45 you might want to do proper research next time you make a video, this version of the Vorchan Attack Cruiser, is the one used in the entire B5 series and it's 608m long. I don't know where you have been getting your info, but maybe go the official sources released with the show next time. In case you were not aware, they released an official CD-ROM with all the technical information about the ships shown in the show.
    Babylon 5 wars is only a licenced product and not official cannon. They created many things that were not from JMS and did not exist in his lore because they needed the models for their war game.
