We have to bear in mind that G'Kar is an eccentric person and one of high status in the Narn culture, so he is perhaps not the complete picture of the typical Narn.

The thing I remember most from B5 when it aired and JMS would actually hold discussions with the fans was that Narn ships were always far more 'advanced' looking than they actually were. None of the Narn ships had artificial gravity, even the largest cruisers, so people were always strapped in. The ships were slow because their ship engines were inefficient and the weapons were limited because the power systems couldn't handle the loads.

Artificial gravity is more of a choice than a technological status. Earth used centrifuges despite being high tech in all other aspects, while ships like the Brakhiri and Sunhawks also do not use artificial gravity.

artificial gravity is a point of tech status centrifuges are the most primitive level of AG. It is massive and clunky and an obvious targey for attack.
The Mimbari can generate it with a device that Delenn had on her finger. Enough stress Gkar during the pilot. Imagine using that tech in combat.
Every species in B5 universe had homeworlds with gravity. Thats what the crews are more comfortable with.
Mimbari and Centauri are the only ones who have it.
Having no AG means crews need more training to compensate, medical treatment to combat issues arising from no gravity and more R and R between long voyages.

    • @DavidKnowles0
      @DavidKnowles0 Год назад +1

@@Meatisfood I think the lore is that the Earth was pretty close to producing it and the next generation of ships was design to have AG when it was perfected. Sheridan and Delenn gift meant earth didn't need to expend resources perfecting the technology.
I'm guessing the Narns were thinking along similar lines as earth. Build the ships suitable for gravity and retrofit later on.
People always forget how long even today military ships stay in service, carriers easily have a 50 years life expectancy. Other smaller ships 30 years plus.

Recall that the Centauri perfected the Roman style bureaucracy. To the point that it didn't even need leadership to run - often even more efficiently without leadership than with. Their military was no different. Thus, there were no "war heroes" in the Centauri military - just millions of cogs in a very big, very efficient machine. Fun fact on the "T'Loth-class" (or "Narn Heavy Cruiser" as its called in the show) because the CGI artists were on a tight schedule they took a Star Destroyer clone they had already created as generic art assets for their NewTek 3d rendering software, flipped it on its side and mirrored it and stuck them together with a generic low poly bridging section. With the new reimagined series on the way we will likely get to see this war again and perhaps JMS will portray it in more detail, we will get to really see tactically where they both are. If you saw the opening of the Lost Tales even though Earth's Warlocks took out some Vorchans with ease , some Warlocks were destroyed or damaged as well.
The Narn like the Centauri were considered a dying race. Their hate led them to ruin, they focused on revenge instead on actually growing as a people this is something G'Kar realized. I'd hazard a guess that an encounter with a Minbari/Drakh-level foe would have the same problem - if the G'Quans (G'Quanur? eh, whatever) could actually be brought to bear they could slice most things to pieces, but they'd just get swarmed and torn to shreds by those nasty, nasty fighters (e.g. Nial-class) before they could do their jobs.

B5 was a fantastic example of storytelling through mechanics and design. Case in point: the Centauri were a more advanced race with better quality ships that had artificial gravity and weapons but were decadent and individually weak. Meanwhile the Narn weren't as advanced with ships that were slower and didn't have artificial gravity but were better armored and fought with a untied cause. Meanwhile, the humans occupied a nice middle ground, better armored but not as advanced as the Centauri while being faster but not as hard hitting as the Narn.

They also are slow and lack maneuvering capabilities. Granted some of that might be offset by armor, but its been proven time and again that a pair of more maneuverable vorchan cruisers can rip a g’quan to shreds.
To me it feels like the narns sacrifice everything for that opening knock out blow. They jump into a system, immediately lay down enough fire in the opening salvo to end the fight. If that doesn’t work then they tend to lose.

6:00 Yeah you have to take any information from B5 Wars with a grain of salt. They changes a lot of canon information just to fit their tabletop wargame. The designs they added are not considered canon by most people either so that 200m jump capable ship would no really exist in universe.
I notice you didn't show the "TH´NOR CLASS CRUISER" that the "T´LOTH CLASS ASSAULT CRUISER" was built using. Each of those two parts on the side was a ship in it's own right and the mainstay of the early Narn fleet. Being a practical race they figured, why not take a ship that works, add two together and make something much stronger. I always loved that part of their lore.

@@Ishlacorrin Well JMS said that he used the B5 Wars ship guide as the definate reference guide for ships. However he also said that he didnt let technical specs get in the way of a good story ie fighters could move as far and as fast as the episode required. When you say multiple canon sources conflict can you explain which ones? The only cannon material is B5 wars the scripts the tv series including the TV movies and some of the novels though definately not all (ie the ones JMS and his wife (?) wrote. @@danielclark6638 There was a canon CD released with the show that had all the ship specs from the show in it. It was rather detailed and was called 'The complete Babylon 5 Companion' or something similar. Most of our technical information over the years came from that, the show and some novels. So between that and the show both saying that no ship below 1km in size could open jump points till the Whitestar and B5Wars saying otherwise, we have 3 difference sources conflicting at least.

I should also point out that the Bin'Tak is an odd design lore wise. It was built before the Narn-Centauri war, but only just. Only two of the eight built survived the war in bad shape. They were refitted AFTER the ISA was formed and thus incorporated a lot of newer tech. The newer version has gravimetric drives and 3/5 Narn gravity on board. It's also much more heavily armed than the version shown in this video.
Weapons on the newer and more modern versions are as follows "2 Ultra-Heavy Particle Lasers, 12 Heavy Particle Lasers, 2 Energy Mine Launcher, 60 Plasma Pulse Cannons (point defence)" Those two main guns are said to each have the same yield as the Earth G.O.D. defence grid platforms. Thus each could take out the entire eastern seaboard of the USA in one shot. The 12 particle lasers are the same type as the main guns on G-Quan class, though it's likely those have improved since they joined the ISA as well.

The first Centauri invasion was a terrible scar on the psyche of the once peaceful and agrarian Narn race. The technology they acquired from the Centauri enabled them to jump to the stars as a strong and determined force. Ironically, the second Centauri invasion may have saved the Narn... It seems like the Narn have almost completely built their economy around their military and ship construction. And that's the reason why they were able to build such a large space fleet in a short time span. However, the Narn sacrificed other parts of their society and economy to do it. The Narn went "all in" on Military construction.
Meanwhile the other races have a more robust and diverse economies. The Centauri, the Earth Force, etc all have adaptable economies. Not everything is dedicated to military construction. So there is room in reserve if they need to adapt.
Meanwhile The Narn military may seem fierce, but they are extremely weak in other areas of their society. For example, I would say their agriculture, and medical technology is probably severely lacking compared to other races. And if their military is defeated, they don't have much else economically to rely on.
