Having this social safety net guaranteed forever is a great thing. Keeping payment rates up to comfortable liveable levels will be an important goal. Protecting these funds from other miscellaneous political groups will continue to be a challenge. If Americans move toward caring for their demented seniors as has been done in other civilized countries, we must plan for an additional financial and professional burden in coming years. It's not guaranteed forever. It's not even guaranteed much beyond the end of the year. Social programs are under attack from more angles the ever before. If Trump is reelected, every cent we have put in. Will go into the pockets of Trump; large corporations, and the 1%. If any Republican wins it the Presidency the result will be much the same. And even if we see a blue tsunami come November. Project 2025 is waiting in the wings to take over no matter what.

Senator, regarding social security solvency, I’ve been saying for years that we need to significantly raise or even remove the cap on social security tax on income. Here’s how I look at it. If you own a home, you pay a specific % of real estate tax based on the value of your home. If tax was 1% and your home is worth 500,000 you would pay $5000. If your home is worth 5,000,000 you would pay 50,000. There is no ‘cap’ that says once you pay $5,000 you don’t have to pay more even if your home is worth 500 million $. It doesn’t matter if you have a family of 10 or you live alone. Why doesn’t social security tax work the same way? No, there’s a cap. So the lower and middle class bears the burden of taxes, while the rich pay nothing past the current cap. Makes no sense! And…Increasing the age of claiming benefits will be a disaster for our economy when todays youth turns 60 and start having health issues keeping them from working. Consider also that company’s don’t give pensions for these youngsters and 401k plans are a joke. So by the time our youngsters age, we will have a perfect storm setting up a generation for poverty.

It has the amount they paid you, plus the money they took out for any of your premiums for any benefits you have. That amount goes on my 1040. I assume you have a similar form. And in my case I also have to declare any funds I take out of my retirement account. I know I am really lucky to have a retirement account. Most people aren't so fortunate.

I can’t tell you how many young folks have told me about the doubt they have about the chances they have to get SSI benefits. They feel bad about, real bad.
As a matter of fact there are those who hold older folk like myself at fault, creating a rift. Maybe this is is wanted….?

Please tell them that I have heard that Social Security benefits would never come my way when I retired for about the last 40 years! I collected my earned retirement benefits for 10 of those years. This is an earned benefits program, put in place after the terrible years of the depression in the early 1900’s. It is meant to supplement the elderly in retirement through a mandatory contribution program; that’s why it’s called an entitlement.
      Don’t mess with it!!
      Don’t buy the bunk!!

It’s not SSI‼️ it’s SS= “Social Security”. SSI is for younger ppl who can’t work ever or ever again. Like ppl with muscular dystrophy or an incapacitating injury.

The Senate and the House should not be allowed to use Social Security for anything other than to pay the people for what they and their employers have paid into with the reasonable expectation that the money will be there when they need it. The question of solvency is because congress has been helping themselves to the reserve. And never forget -- we pay for Medicare from our SSI and, if you elect to have an "advantage" plan, you pay for that as well.

Let me think deduction Medicare by IRS not going to my VA. So🎉cial security deduction for Medicare please send them to the VA instead of a med service I don't use. You have an (med) insurance called Medicare. I have been using VA service because 1999 is when I registered for VA. Even though blue cross blue shield takes a cut of my household of four, 20k a year. It is so nice to make sure I pay more than $75 dollars in taxes Trump years.

Since Social Security is a self funding program, there is always some funds in trust. However, this program has been dipped into by other entities other than its regular funding. Perhaps this raiding can stop?? Medicare basically the same, though only partially self funded. Again, those who raid these 2 programs for other means than their intended beneficiaries, must stop. These programs wouldn't be in such critical status if greed went elsewhere.

Playing word games with social security is just wrong.
Why does social security have to be fully funded? The defense budget money is manufactured out of thin air every year. In fact billions of dollars worth of weapons that only kill and destroy are given to other nations without concern for the debt or human consequences.

Here’s an idea for you… why doesn’t the Congress just return the 2.9 trillion dollars they borrowed from the Social Security Security Fund?!?!?! That would get it to solvency.

Tax the rich 1% of the population whose wealth increased 400% in just the last two years, as the 99% actually do the work it takes. Tax the rich! Feed the poor.
