"I want it on record that every fucking time i googled Nier automata cover I'd get links to japanese love pillows with 2B on them"
~Yahtzee
It's all dakimakuras
what the fuck
But 'tis not troo! I just googled eet.
What, you didn't think Google kept track of your search history?
Google: You're thinking about how much you want to ****** 2B, aren't you?
HAHAHAA I laughed my ass off at that part. The comment in the vid was even funnier. Someone said along the lines of " I think by this point in the game we all wanted to fuck 2B"
2B- "To be or not to be", Hamlet, Existentialism
9S- ''Ninus' Tomb", Midsummer Night's Dream, Dies Over and Over and Over
A2- "Et Tu, Brute?", Julius Caesar, Betrays the Other Androids
Jeezus christ...
Thanks!
Okay. I only picked up on 2B myself. That’s actually kinda cool.
That "A2" one seems like a bit of a stretch compared to the other ones.
2B and A2 were the ones I immediately got, but 9S I didn't get. Cheers!
Holy crap, that's a great point! Thank you for sharing this!

My my, Yahtzee, identifying with the natives already?
late to the party, but indeed.
*Cultural Appropriation intensifies*
Pardon my American, but is "natives" meant to refer to us? If so, it seems a bit rude considering how we treated the real Native people
@@fiaTheFae Chill your culturally sensitive butthole - they used the word native to refer to native citizens/residents. There are different uses for the word native you know - it isn't just used to refer to "Native Americans". Yahtzee moved to the US in 2016 - they are joking about his use of the word 'we' which would insinuate that he identifies as an 'American', thus the use of the word 'natives' as Yahtzee is not a native U.S. citizen. Oh and also, being part American Indian myself, I don't find it rude at all. But you know - that's just me.
@@macmcskullface1004 It feels like you're making a bigger deal out of my bigger deal. I was simply quelling his 'mild concern' by explaining why it was entirely unnecessary and how OP's normal use of the word 'natives' was not rude or insensitive

0:40 "it TOO was a sequel to Drakengard!" **displays the only Drakengard game that Yoko Taro didn't make and isn't canon**
Dude is so full of shit lol they never said it was a sequel, it's an alternate universe
Josh Becton It is a sequel to drakengard, the ending where they go to earth and it wipes out humanity. Pretty simple to look into before you start accusing people of being full of shit
that had to have been on purpose.
@@jbwinning2011 it's a sequel to ending e of drakengaurd.
The only worthwhile thing about 2 is Caim and that scene where he bisects an entire platoon of soldiers with the biggest grin on his face while Manah shits her pants thoroughly.
But didn't Planet of the Apes wait until the end of the movie to show that it was Earth all along? The very first shot of the player character in Nier is him sulking in an abandoned Blockbuster video outlet.
Yeah got the big twist completely wrong, the real twist was the Gestalt/Replicant project.
Blockbuster? So it takes place in 2010? xD
Considering that opening doesn't get an explanation, it's easy to assume that those events are going to happen later, or that it the main game is set in an alternate dimension that eventually goes to Earth. Also, Nier being set on Earth was never a plot point, the state of humanity was.
Mordalon
It does get an explanation doe.
:/
Right after that scene in the video store the game tells you its been like a thousand years. Nier being set on earth is important because of humans and how they react to things.

Literally the first reviewer i've seen pronouncing "automata" correctly.
Let me guess, everyone else is saying "auto-may-ta?"
There's a different way to pronounce it?
Otto-mayta, otto-mah-ta, otto-matta, ott-tom-uh-tuh...
The official japanese pronunciation would be "oh-toe-mah-tuh"
I use "aw-toe-mah-tuh" myself.
It really doesn't matter. The word is soooo old no one uses it anymore except in this game and as the old plural for "automaton" or something.
Random Jim Sterling refers to the game as Nier: A-tomahtuh. (Near: A Tomato)
+Random You could spell it "oh-toe-mutter" or you could spell it "auto-martyr".
This looks alright, but I'll hold out for Nier 3: He's an Egg Now
Nier 3: We somehow go back to fucking kingdoms and knights, but everyone's still a robot.
Nier 4: Actually Just Drakengard Again
Nier 4: He's a Squid Now

Ho boi, angry fanboy alert!
the nuking japan more than twice bout sums it up.
I'm honestly more mad that you used Drakengard 2's cover instead of the original's than anything else. The original Drakengard was grey sludge with a weird, fucked up story and a joke ending that led to Nier, and Drakengard 2 was grey sludge with... well, somewhat okay combat and a plot with about as much taste and density as balsa wood.
Pay proper respects to playable grey sludge, damn it.
+Crafty Catgirl Well at the very least he didn't use Drakengard 3's cover. That game was just ass

I find it hard to believe anyone could fight the last boss of Nier: Automata and still that it "went nowhere" philosophically.
Maybe I was just an emotional wreck by that point, but it was one of the only actually cathartic moments I've ever felt from playing a video game.

MyName AChef I know, Leon cleared that up for me. I thought he could've meant the superboss, which I happened to do after ending E.
You need to play better games :D
i don't get how he can say this game does nothing with its philosophical concepts but he praised Bioshock Infinite which literally did nothing but just show you some stuff which looks "deep" on a surface level then just moved on expecting us to be blown away
Personally, I've found that critics who absolutely HATE _BioShock: Infinite_ are also the ones who give *David Cage* games 10/10.
And the fanboys are just angry it's not the exact same game as the original _BioShock_ (which had worse gameplay).
Because David Cage games focus on story and eliminate gameplay.
Infinite has hole filled story and mediocre gameplay
Alvious focus on story? those games are so full of plot holes and cliches they make transformers look deep
I dont like Bioshock 1, Infinite or David Cage. Dont generalize. Some people just dont think its a good game
Well, he does praise the second half of the story as emotional, so he must have realize by now that the character development doesn't start until later in the game.
The game doesn't just leave it's ideas unresolved. Ending E uses the idea of people helping each other and sacrificing despite their distances and differences to coincide with the notion that the androids and the machines both sought to be like humans, with their feelings and fears, and they had a lot in common.
Mordalon
Ending E is more so just Nihilism vs the Ultimate hope. That even though there is a pretty big chance 2B, 9S, and A2 will all just die again, there is also a small chance that they won't.
kyotheman69
You didn't have to if you didn't want to. The great part is you still did.

This was funny, and I get the intent is to get a laugh so it's all good. But I hope no one uses this review as a basis for a purchase decision for this game, because it really couldn't have been more incorrect. In any aspect.
Skill Up You are a wise man
I disagree, he was right on the world being shit and combat being shit. I like the game, but travelling and destroying robots was incredibly boring.
Ohhh man. You must be new around here. Yahtzee is very careful with his praise, I would say maybe 1 in 10 review actually have anything positive to say about the game. As a long time Yahtzee viewer the message I got was "Buy it, you won't be disappointed".
You're allowed to like something despite its flaws. Just because YOU really like the game doesn't mean it has its flaws. The combat is pretty bland after a while and the open-world, while beautiful, is rather empty for what it is. Not to mention how the so-called "philosophical story'' completely misrepresents multiple classic philosophical concepts.
The open world being boring is sort of the point though. Like No More Heroes, it reflects how the central conflict itself is actually rather empty once you boil it down. That's why the game gives you the ability to warp between save points
If I'm a sequel in the game of life, then my character needs a patch updating his design and his personality.
Sorry, we only got expensive DLCs.
Allegory for my entire life.
Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade Well you could buy the premium pass...but that does come with you signing away your soul.
Damn it, I already sold it so I could buy more crack
Character and personality comes from hardships. Anyone can be happy if they have their health, job, and friends.
I'm late, but personally, some things that entertained me very deeply were trying to peek up 2B's skirt for the achievement, riding moose nowhere, literally blowing 9S' pants off and finding all of the amusing ways I could lose the game, like blowing up while in the homebase.
Or eating the fish that Jackass gave you. The game did warn you.
Too Be? more like Boo te
well her reddit page is "2Booty"
Yhatzee didn't do ending E
This is the only game, only piece of media really where you get to prove the thesis of the writer wrong within it. He's other points about game play I don't understand because perspective and mode changes often enough, and when you're 9S you can hack enemies, take over them and use them to attack other enemies, and each one has a different move set. Game world I can understand, coming off of Doom or some other big budget game then the visuals are luck luster, but they are stylish. Ironically the Director stated that he liked making games that are weird and likeable for reasons you can't really put your finger on.
Some aspects of it fell flat but if you're down here at the bottom of the comments looking for a second opinion then you're probably the kind of person who'd enjoy it.
How are you proving the thesis of the writer wrong? I'm genuinely curious, I might have missed something.
Taro has inherently negative things to say about humanity. The sacrifice at the end of path E is an opportunity to prove these things wrong. I don't really want to say more than that though, Path E should be experienced with no further information.
I also think that copying your data makes the act of helping someone meaningless, but that's just me.
"There is no victory without sacrifice"
Well those bots bucked the system too, so why can't I?
Any victory without sacrifice is meaningless.
Why is any victory without sacrifice meaningless? When does the game ever imply that?
What if 9S' name is a reference to the old phrase "To the Nines" (2B 9S) meaning both "no expenses were spared" and in more modern contexts "dressed in an overly formal manner" since the androids are clearly quite an expensive project and despite technically not needing clothes at all besides maybe combat armor their current attire wouldn't look out of place at a fancy dinner party. So long as they took the blindfolds off and kept their swords under lock.
have you seen the YoRHa captain. She is wielding 4 Katanas, A buster blade, A spear and a pair of Giant Black gauntlets(Impact Bracers) and is wearing the equivalent of a skin tight armored wetsuit. She would be very out of place.
Clearly you go to the wrong kind of dinner parties! The boring kind!
Or you could mark this one off as Japan being Japan. Why the hell would you fight robots with a sword? Why make them look human at all instead of just terminators or something with human emotions? Thomas Was Alone told a whole story with colored blocks.
Actually that phrase has more meaning to the danger he poses and the real reason 2b is paired with him. Not to be overly spoiler.... he's TOO advanced. Which if you take dress in overly formal as also meaning to munch for it's own benefit, that meaning fits.
M16A41000 9S actually sucks with a sword... unlike Yahtzee said, he's not a combat model, so he's not great at it. he searches, analyzes and hacks.
So while 2B may sit there for 10 minutes, ineffectually beating on a gold-plated, transforming, bullet hell tank, 9S can blow it apart from the inside with only a few rounds of hacking... takes maybe like 2 minutes, tops.

4:33 A female robot with thigh-high boots. That's what you liked.
Don't forget the absolutely magnificent bum.
Hunting for all endings is the real sidequest in Nier.
The 'stale' and 'easy' combat is easily fixed by just playing on hard or very hard
healing chips become useless, enemies actually hurt when they hit and you have to start paying attention to things like combos, gap closers, stagger on weapons, reach, etc
I like the way Demo put it in his Drakengard 3 video: "But, I'm recommending it. Why? Because quite frankly, in all of my gaming experience, I've never seen a game give less of a shit. I've never played a game that didn't care about leaving its plot contradictions and story inconsistencies entirely unexplained until after you collect every weapon in the game and finish its 3 alternate branches"
Ever wonder why apple skipped from 8 to X? Because 9s was already an android product.
That last joke hit me harder than it would've hit Kokura.
God dammit Yahata this is why we have nice things.

I’m pretty sure 9S is from the latin “non esse” which means something like “not to be” or “non existence” in Latin:
interestingly, all the playable androids names are types of pencil (2B), pen (9S) and paper (A2)
Yahtzee: "now you have a gun". Bro, you said you played OG Nier but you don't know that the flying book over Nier's shoulder shoot projectiles, effectively making it a "gun". This game doesn't deviate far from that core mechanic (which is good)

4:06 "Where the important climatic stuff happ--" goddang it, Yahtzee... I freakin' love it.
I honestly never made the connection with 2B's name until another reviewer pointed it out. Also, The game has an unbelievable level of difficulty customization. Sure you CAN make it easy by equipping yourself with all of the defensive chips so you practically never die, but then you're avoiding all of the crazier chips. Just because you CAN trivialize combat doesn't make the combat bad, it just means you chose to make it easy.
Seriously, learning how to utilise taunts and counter attacks to do massive amounts of damage was one of my more satisfying game experiences.
Normal nowadays is Easy. It has to be played on Hard.
Also play with the network off. Reviving players breaks boss battles.
Learn to use the extra pods. Melee shield means 5 seconds of hacking with impunity.
FFS you can put melee shield on THREE pods, and cycle between them...
Also, gold isn´t that hard to get, so you can always use defense and attack boost.
So, L2P issue.
Bullshit, it's a game. You're going to pick the things that make you stronger because that's how games work, outside of quirky online challenges. When people talk about a game difficulty, they're talking about playing it like a normal person, not artificially making it more difficult by imposing your own arbitrary limitations on what items you can and can't use. And honestly even when the game gets "difficult" it's mostly just a slog. It's easy to dodge, it's just going to take you ages to whittle down the enemy life bars.
Randy Butternubs someone could be a genius and just uneducated.
"That is why we drew the line at nuking Japan twice. " this line is even funnier when you know the full lore of Nier where they definitely did not draw the line at twice.
I actually loved pretty much all the side quests and was super invested in the characters myself.
Congrats your taste is shit

rustybender That never stopped him before. Just check all the videos made during the summer release schedule. That's usually when no new games arrive and Yahtz draws straws on which game from more than a year back he'll review to keep his utilities on.

Can't wait for Nier 3: Drakengard 5: Ikaruga 2: He's An Egg Now

Nah, Yoko Taro is definitely the bullet hell guy. Square Enix is the action rpg guy.
@@Toksyuryel

The only thing about the combat I didn't like was the camera somehow expecting you to keep track of your position among a group of enemies and bullets with a companion who looks near identical with a camera angle more awkward than a spotty teen talking to a girl. Other than, I quite enjoyed it
Oh god, that joke at the end... So fucked up...
I love it.
you got hocked into the story because of the way 2B and 9S stories telling were told. The first you get to know the general world, the second you find out the secrets and details of each encountered. Once you are fully aware of what's going on, A2 story gives you the main plot line based on 2B and 9S stories.

I just finished this game last night. After struggling with numerous reviews of N:A I just want to say THANK YOU! There was a strange disconnect with me and this game. What he means is the experience touched him more than any game he's play beforehand.
I'd never had a root canal before my first one, but I sure as shit wouldn't recommend one after having experienced it.
Combat was bad? it's the same combat as in Bayonetta. Turn the difficulty to hard and lets see how those healing items will work out :)
Anime Oz yes my run on hard with no autochips was a true test and an extremely fun one at that
Anime Oz THB man hard feels kinda bullshit at times maybe it's because I never played a Platinum game but getting one shot by even basic enemy isn't fun I'd be fine with that if not for the game's death system which tries to be like dark souls but just doesn't work for this game
Play it on medium for a bit. You will get the hang of it and then hard mode becomes fun!!
Anime Oz I only wish you could save during the first part of the game. This was the first time that I used a controller in literal years since mouse and keyboard didn't work so well and I kept dying so I had the priviledge of watching the cutscenes over and over again until I finally decided to put the game on easy until saving became possible.
Anime Oz he didn't like the combat in Bayonetta either
9S: "Where are my pubes?"

"Nier, far, wherever you are"

I might be forgetting the word but I'm pretty sure that "Auteur" is the word for what makes Nier interesting.
It was created by an absolute nutcase that manages to make something highly strange and perhaps less clever than it thinks it is, but does so in such a way that you forget about its inadequacies because it just kinda works.
granted I never played Nier.
Nier: Automata is arguably the best game to come out this year, and would easily be if it weren't for Zelda. Still, Zelda will never play with the medium like Nier does.
Yoko Taro is a name to watch out for, guys. This game is a fucking masterpiece.
Not really. There are better games that do the exact same thing that the first Nier tried to do but better. Bravely Default is one of them, for example.
bravely is too easy..
So Bravely default has 10 different genres in the game, endings which change the whole game and a story which is just as complicated as metal gear solid?
The endings do not change. Nier Automata's 'multiple endings' are laughable because they are not multiple endings. Nier, Drakengard 1, 3 and even the dreaded drakengard 2 had multiple endings.
This game only has one ending pushing right into another, 2 of which actually repeat because you play as a different character but during the same time just his point of view, and a shit ton of joke endings that don't really add anything other than to troll you.
Quite frankly, Nier Automata story wise is the weakest out of the entire series. He watered it down for the mass audience. That or maybe hes getting bored of his own franchises.
there are only two differing endings and a third 'maybe' ending, or a what if.
"breaking the gameplay like the heart of a little dog when it discovers you're not holding a treat" 😂😂 He makes even animal cruelty sound hilarious.
0:43 is actually a sequel to Drakengard 1, not 2
yahtzee jokes but yoko taro did say he wants to make a shooter but sqaure won't let him. which is why his games have so many shooter elements in them.
I was waiting for the to be or not to be joke, I made that joke the instant I found out what her name was.
It's at the end of 9S's story - the ending is called "Or not 2[B]"
I'm a construction draftsman, so for me it was the pencils.
Considering it's
just a codename, and what her actual designation and role is
, the pun makes sense in-world.
I always thought his name was 9S as a play on NES, since his hacking abilities involve a dual stick shooter arcade game with chiptunes music.
Japan doesn't have NES they have Famicom.
I know you made this comment 2 years ago, but it's never too late to be a pedantic ass.
I accept and embrace weirdness every time in my games. Many companies are playing safety now days, and I'm glad to see good old Yoko Taro back in town with his extravagant thought absurdly strange games. I have a soft stop for that.
That last joke is simultaneously one of the funniest things I've ever hear you say, and the only thing that has ever made me worry for your job! Good reviews.
My favorite part was buying the achievements I didn’t want to grind out.
Personally, I died at "Nine hundred million gunshot wounds." XD
The first chunk of the review just sounds like yahtzee's a little butthurt about not knowing nier was a drakenguard spinoff
Drakengard kinda sucks, not surprised alot of people dont know about it.
nier automata is basically the best think to come out of either series imo
snowboundmage this c9mment just sounds like someone's a lil butt hurt her didn't praise it to high heavens
Drakengard may be kinda terrible, but The Dark Id's Let's Play of it is one of the most brilliant things I've ever read.
It's amazing that he has such a hard time wrapping his head around the fact that two franchises can be loosely connected without being direct sequels to eachother.
While I agree that the game is more prompt than statement in regards to its philosophical themes and implications, I don't agree that this is a bad thing. At the very least, the game made me think about such things long after I had finished, which is much more than I can say about many other games that attempted to make concrete statements.
Everyone always talk about how this game made them rethink life whereas i just thought the whole thing was fun
well it can do both at the same time
i was expecting the pencil joke, and i am not disappointed at all.
you gotta play it on hard or harder for it to shine, I experienced
For it to shine, Or for you to cry?
Blue★ Well, if you cry enough on your screen it will eventually shine :P
Thinking of purchasing this soon, should I play it on hard for the 1st play through?
Like Rise of the TR or UC4, both challenging games on hard but too easy on normal.
Any feedback from players who have completed this will be appreciated!
Jammyfish the prologue is the hardest part. since 1 mistake has you doing the enire thing. Btw the prologue is the demo with an extra 5 min in the beginning
Jammyfish Definitely play it on Normal for the Tutorial to get a hang of the gameplay since the tutorial doesnt have any save points. After you feel comfortable with the way this game handles, turn it to hard, you can do it any time you want in this game :)
"I want it on record that every fucking time I Googled 'Nier Automata Cover' I'd get links to Japanese love pillows with 2B on them"
Gotta love when he nonchalantly drops spoilers
And here I thought 9S was the future iPhone model.
Give it time...
There are too many spoilers toward the end of this video without much critical reason for it. I wouldn't recommend this video for anyone thinking about playing the game.
Marklar3 Thanks mate, I shall steer clear for now then.
Marklar3 these videos are generally not for people who haven't played the games.
I haven't played it nor have I even finished the trailer so far and I'd pretty much known everything he said already anyways. the cliché existentialism combined with robot-vibes isn't really subtle here :D
the ton of unnecessary fanservice (boobwindow? high heels? combusting makes her _skirt_ disappear? ...really?) doesn't really speak for profoundly intellectual, original ideas either (of course there might have been clues to the plot that I missed because I didn't recognize them, but in that case other people who haven't played it yet are likely to do the same, I'd wager)
+StllBreathnBut_Y I'd say 99% of his videos are for both people who haven't played them yet and those who did. it certainly helped me steer clear from quite a few, since I learned that when I did play them I agreed with pretty much
everything he says :D
GryphonSkull it wasn't exactly fan service, the dev was asked why he did it (albeit specifically about high heels) and said “The biggest reason is that I just really like girls.” Basically he actually just did it for himself
This isn't a review, it's a comedy bit.
'Want a chewit' had me laughing hysterically on the train. Brilliant.
Man this game is actually a masterpiece in terms of its storytelling and themes that come together. Really disappointed Yahtzee critiqued its themes with that unbearable smug smirky "akshually it's not that deep for MY big brain" attitude.
Video games don't do themes well. When one comes along that does, like Automata or Outer Wilds we need to shout this shit from the rooftops, not throw it down with a smug, emotionally vacant, "didn't mean anything to me" attitude. This is how we end up with endless sequels, droll by the numbers plots about saving the world, with an intellectual question not raised from start to finish
Preach, my friend.
I dont even play videogames, but I watch this shit.
Nier: Automata is the new benchmark for videogame storytelling for me
Im pretty sure that the reason they dump existential thematic elements is not to come up with a solution to those fundamentally flawed issues, but to instead have you reflect on it and see what you think. wouldve been cool if there was a questionnaire or something at the end of the third playthrough and your answers determine the outcome of the fourth or something. In the beginning I thought there would end up being a morality system, but unfortunately I was wrong.
huh? did you enjoy it or did you not enjoy it? lol
have you feel "THE WEIGHT OF THE WORLD" yet?
"We?"
Last time I checked it wasn't the Aussies who decided how many death balls got slung.
Great video, joke was still very funny
2B - To Be
9S - Nein Ist - Is Not
A2 - Et Tu
2E - Banjo-Tooie?
Shouldn't it be "Ist nicht"? I don't think "Nein ist" is the correct grammar.
Well... it has to fit with the naming scheme and it is a Japanese game, don't think German grammar was the most important part to consider.
Geoff G Et tu would mean “And you” in Latin. “To be is not and you”?
Yeah, that's not how german works.
Anyone who's gotten Endings C and D of Nier would already know about the humans in Automata.
"Loading my mouth with Pokey" XD XD XD
9S = Nihilist? In a game with hints of existentialism it would make sense to reference a somewhat similar philosophy.
Per the wiki: 9S's name is a Latin pun: "non esse" is "not to be," the opposite of 2B's "to be." It could also be read as the German "nein es" ("no id") referring to Freud's theory of id, ego and superego, though this is not proper German grammar.
I had fun walking into that robot orgy in the beginning. I couldn't stop laughing
"near far wherever you are" i came.
The action RPG-guy probably is someone at square enix who actually wants to sell the game, and the bullet hell shooter-guy is Yoko Taro making it anyway.
Am I the only one who didn't know why she was named 2B until now?!?!
I blame the ass, it took away my senses.
I actually really liked some of the side quests. The android killer, the memory wipe couple, oh god speedstar! Heck even the NEET robot was pretty funny. And several of them hint at and touch on 2b and 9s relationship and the various themes of existentialism. Nier automata isn't super deep, but it executes on theme consistently, at time subtly, and well. Every character, civilization, and side quest is someone s answer to the search for meaning, and the problems inherent in adhering to any single answer. At the end, the message is simple: Life can be difficult and messy and there are no absolute answers. So sometimes it's worth just doing a thing, even if it takes sacrifice, even if you'll never be acknowledged or even know if it mattered. Because it might help someone somewhere sometime. And that's enough of a reason to keep going as anything else.
